Moxibustion -aka Moxa

Something that I'm hearing more and more about now...anyone have any experience with it?

Theory

The actions of cupping and moxibustion are explained by theory from acupuncture and Chinese medicine. Specifically, health and illness are manifestations of the circulation of chi (vital energy or life energy) through the person. These techniques are used to influence the circulation of chi, or to alter its subtle qualities, in order to relieve symptoms in the body.

Heat is believed to be a potent force for influencing the flow or qualities of chi through the body.

Historically one theory of action of moxibustion is that the local tissue damage (extended cellular damage by the intense heat of moxibustion) initiates a non-specific healing reaction that can have effects throughout the body, stimulated by production of immunological mediators and neurotransmitters.

It has been proposed that moxibustion elevates immune responses and stimulates the circulation of white blood cells in the body (2).

Moxa may have antiseptic and analgesic effects, by virtue of one of its components (borneol) which is commonly used in topical therapies for its.

Moxibustion may improve circulation and enhance localized drug uptake in areas of the body being targeted by therapeutic drugs (3).


More tame/relaxing -

I've experienced Moxa (otherwise known as Moxibustion) treatments in conjunction with acupuncture by a professional, but until now, I didn't know it was something you could do yourself. Moxa is made of mugwort herb that's formed into a little stick; it's placed along acupuncture points and then lit on fire like a cigar to warm those points and improve circulation.

Actually, while I find the burning smell of Moxa to be fairly pleasant (very woody smell, but not too obnoxious), it is a little disconcerting to see smoke rising from my wrists. And it gets hotter as it burns down closer to my skin, and if the acupuncturist has stepped out of the room when it's amost done, I start to panic.

So, it's funny to hear about a new kind of Moxa for a younger generation - it's made for relaxation. It comes in different fragrances for those who don't like the traditional burning mugwort smell. Of course, if you're doing it yourself, you can't place them on both wrists at the same time. Supposedly, these "beginner" Moxa sticks won't burn too close to your skin.

its using the term cupping, referring to suction of the skin rite?
it makes you feel better with suction?
i know for a fact that suction makes me feel better.
my chi is happy after a good bit of suction anyday.

the three years i lived in korea, i dated a girl whose mom was an accupuncturist, and other weird things. the accupuncture, was odd, but the suction shit they did with the glass jars and other things, yeah, it just made you look goofy for short periods of time.
