That was the real NuSkool, and I loved it. No that we have the big return of funky break travesty, I can't call myself a breakbeat enthusiast anymore.....

The Y2k series (the original one) on Distinctive rocked too.

Where Did the good guys go? Waveform, Kevin Beber, T-Power, Subponic, McMillan&Tab, Tsunamy One........why did B.L.I.M., Freq Nasty, Koma&Bones, etc. pp. became so lame?

I dunno - that mix was sick for it's time (my PERSONAL favorite track on there is Leuroj "Isakora"), but nuskool has branched in many different ways - some still leaning in that direction. You just have to know what names/labels to look for. Quite frankly, a lot of what you mentioned goes over fairly well out here on the West Coast. I like that there's variety now tho - back when Tectonics came out, it was all that early Botchit & TCR stuff, and now you can get funky, techy, tribally, bassline, proggy, ragga, etc. etc. all under the same general genre. It gives you the ability to take a set somewhere rather than plod along on the same vibe throughout a mix.

On a final note (can anyone tell how high I am?) : The best thing about THAT mix :werd: , is it goes well with strapping on your headphones, blazing one, sipping some coffee and jammin' out.

None is doing this deepere tunes anymore. TCR has become a travesty, Botchit as well. Even Aquasky sound like JumpUp these days. Dylan Rhymes produces a strange mixture of ElectroClash and Disco and by far worst: Marine Parade sucks big time.

No one is programming proper Beats anymore. Most of the tunes are so close to a 4/4 Kickdrum that you can hardly notice the difference.

Where is the spirit of HipHop Phenomenon, Nothing Left, Snakeblood, Shureshot, Digital Warning, Underglas, Cuba, Metisse......? Now everything sounds either like Techno with a breakbeat, House with a breakbeat or bad D&B with a slower breakbeat. It became more sucsessful and instantly they sold out.

But, if the kind of music I like is still out there, so please tell me where I can find it. Perhhaps I'm just ignorant.....

Tectonics was no doubt Freeland's peak. I am not a big fan of the rock & breaks fusion shit.

Well - half those tracks you mentioned are different styles anyway. But you're more or less talking about straight up nuskool, and there is plenty of it out there.

The latest TCR stuff has offered both nuskool & some "tech-funk" (which is the more 4 on the floor sounding shit). Lot 49 label has also releases some breaktastic goodies (again tho w/ tech-funk on the flipsides). The Lable En:vision has some nasty nuskool out, etc. etc. You just have to dig for the sound/style you want. Botchit is a dinosaur these days, as is the majority of Marine Parade's releases. Distinctive went all pussy, and there were no other big labels at that time period churning out nuskool.

People like Danny MCmillan (McMillan & Tab) are still going strong though, and while Mr. Freeland might be too involved with his pseudo rocking, a lot of other names are still in the game.

I like some of the older stuff too...but seriously, you want nuskool to be like Florida breaks and not change for 15 years? That's fucking BORING. Expand your mind - there's some sick stuff out there....

No, I want NuSkool to stay Nu and not becoming a house and techno travesty. En:Vision started out good, but became really lame. Listen to the label compilation, - 9 out of 10 tracks are boring, trancy or both. Lot 49.....well, I know all the stuff on the label and honestly it's techy, but most of the time so techy, that you can hardly make the distinction between techno and breaks. Koma&Bones' "get Down" e.g. is a techno tune. The Breakfastaz remix e.g. is a standard bassline track - modulation bass, hard Snares and metallic shakers. The last Elite Force workout onn the label sucked big time as did the PMT remix (PMT used to bee cutting edge). The only decent breaks track was done by Metric.......And to be clear: I think Lot 49 put's excellent music. For me it just isn't breakbeat anymore. TCR for me went frome a "sure shot even without listening" to "not even worth listening anymore". A label that put out some really great tunes in the past, topped by excellent albums of Subphonic and Waveform, totally sold out. I once interviewed Rennie Pilgrem for a German breaks mag, and at that time he said that NuSkool was kind of stupid, heady music. Those statements from a guy who really got NuSkool going together with Marine Parade......

Well, I know my breakbeats, and I still think that, despite being well produced and definitely working dancefloors, NuSkool has lost all it's edge and innovative drive. It's good dance music, but nothing that makes a permanent impression. The old stuff definitely did!

Gonna have to solidly disagree on that. Nuskool moved on from the one trick pony sound it initially was. Now you have "flavors of". YOU may not like what you're hearing, but that can only be attributed to not looking hard enough for the kind of stuff you want.

As far as nuskool becoming a "house and techno travesty" - well, that's just a matter of opinion. A lot of us folks out here in EDM land like the fusion movement that's been happening. I personally think that 95% of techno sucks ass - but fused w/ breaks, now it 's appealing to me. And house & breaks go together like peanut butter & jelly, so I can't see the problem there.

As far as nuskool no longer being "innovative". You can't really recreate the wheel can you? You can just improve on it. Take it in new directions. But once it's made, it's made. So nuskool isn't what it was back in '99 - GOOD! If it stayed the same way, I'd be playing something else by now. But I'll tell ya what - I have a good crates worth of that old, played to death nuskool shit - so if you're waxing that nostalgic, and really need to feed the addiction - buy it off me so I can get some new vinyl, lol.

Oh yes, I'm looking hard enough. And I didn't say that I don't find records I like. But the records I like are mostly labeled Electro nowerdays or records by folks like EVAC, Tipper and Si Begg. IMO they are innovative, expand what used to be NuSkool and bring in new flavours. So I still get my records. And b.t.w. I'm not nostalgic and just keep on complaining. I produce and put out music I like through my label. That's the opposit of living in the past, I guess.

Perhaps our different perception comes from different musical backgrounds. Being German, I first got introduced to EBM and then to Techno. Techno still is heart and sould of musical taste. Breaks came later and only when they had an atmosphere I could relate to. This atmosphere hard to find in productions that carry the label breaks today.

Because I'm a techno fan, I don't have to listen to techy breaks. There's so much good techno out there, that I don't have to substitute it with a bad approximation. The same statement is valid for House, too. I liked NuSkool, because it was unmistakably a Genre of it's own. Like D&B for example - allways high profile.

Now breaks are just good dance music, but they are not special anymore.
