Opinion, What is better for a DJ?

So I've had this argument with friends over and over and over again. Which is 'better for a DJ?".

Focusing on one specific genre, and becoming masterful at it.

    Or

Learning and becoming great at one Genre, but learning others at the same time. The "A jack of all trades, but a master of none" idea comes in here.

So, is it better to be a master of one, or have the range in music selection and the large opening in possibilities for your set?

(and by genre, I mean EDM and Non-EDM.)

    If this makes any sense.

I just know a lot of DJ's that Spin something and don't even think about other genres (when they spin and even in thier general music listening).

Then I know a lot of DJ's that are complete audiophiles and incorporate all kinds of music in their sets and in their normal listening.

I think you should get good at djing in general. Most stick with one genre to start off. Some move on to other things, others stay where they are at. I, for example, have been spinning dnb for 3.5 years and am just now taking a real liking to breakbeats... you will probably see me doing a set or two in the clubs in the not so distant future.

as far as how I voted? keep em guessing, it seems to get a rise out of the audience.

    Nice....

I mainly spin DnB... but I collect ALL sorts of records.... I've always bought house every now & then... and recently in the past year techno, due to my firends Jamie & Bryan constantly playing the good shit for me... I play almost everything at home... eventually I'll have enough for a good diverse set.... but I'm still stickin' to DnB when i play out until i get more records.....

I started out with what i liked first off: trance. that moved me into progressive, some house, and eventually breaks, and even a small amount of techno. in the end, i buy what i like and play what i like, and dont worry too much about the label other people give it. true, i dont own any DnB even though i like it, i have a style to stick to, but i definitely dont limit myself to just one major genre. no one should.

I pretty well play breaks, and that's it... But I think it's important to listen and be influenced by things outside of "your genre". I listen to all kinds of things, not even just music for inspiration.
I have a couple of old tracks that I'm just waiting for the right moment to drop, and they aren't EDM.
It's kind of a fine line, because whatever you play, it should be danceable when you're in the club, because that's what people are there for, and that's what they want to hear....

But I've heard some old pop/rap tracks dropped, and it worked great.

THIS is something that I don't usually like. I'm all about remixes, I like that, it gets people back to ground-zero sometimes. i spin a lot of clubs to crowds that are into popular stuff, and dont know EDM like most of us do, so remixes are great.

but non-edm? what is it with that stuff today? even deep dish will throw a straight-up white stripes track in. no beatmatch. no reason. just rock and roll in the middle of dance music. i hate it! i came here electronic dance music, not rock. my dancefloor and my mosh pit are two very different entities...

I don't think that it should be flat out 'dropped [rock song here] with no beat matching or whatever]...But remix's of non EDM genres.

    I make no sense, sorry.

For example...Cortex has a remix of eye of the tiger or a remix of the song "I'm so crazy" (Par-T-One)...These aren't ORIGINALLY EDM tracks..just remixes.

I make no sense sometimes..don't mind me.

man I love a good remix but I heard this breakbeat Zep remix that Chris Shaw drooped on destroyer.net and damn near threw my shoe at the computer. Remixes are cool but man I couldnt stand that one! Of course I mean nothing against Chris it was just a track I couldnt stand.
    Good Times!

They are the height of cheese, but it's awesome cuz it's something new, you can groove on it, but it also let's you reminisce... The time I dropped 'Blinded By The Light' remember? Everybody in the place was singing along. It was pretty cool.
