Press Reviews
DJ (Review – Oct. 07):
Zippy electronic sideswipes and a graded ‘Driving Me Crazy’ vocal sample that becomes louder as it progresses feature early on, while the big electroid bassline that comes in after the first drop nags away at your subconscious. It’s a formula that Dopamine builds on with the remix. A squiggly acid 303 build up provides a rush to the drop and then pretty little fills and gurgles carry to the close. 4/5
Mixmag (Review Dec. 07):
Sinister’s latest Protégée, northerner Sam Hell is a fine example of the nu generation of artists who draw in the best elements of various genres and make it their own. Subtle breaky hi hats underneath a phat round kick get you stuck into the groove immediately, accompanied with a bassline so confident and solid proving less can mean more. On the flip, Dopamine takes it to a deeper level but still keeps the chunkness flowing with a dangerous sub bass.
Rant Magazine:
Here’s one for the Friday night insomniacs.
They’ll find it at four in the morning, dropped through the speakers and into the air like a big, thumping tech house juggernaut; upon hearing it the perfect excuse will be created to stay dancing ‘till the sun starts to rise.
Bone Snow starts playfully, warms itself up, giving us a cheeky glimpse of what’s to come. When it peaks for the first time, everything comes pouring out and breaks into powerful forward motion. Once it gets going, it rolls for an unstoppable seven minutes of bouncing and boastful techno. A feast of repetition in warm, squirty bass, a surreal vocal loop and swirls of synth and electronics. Sam Hell gets it just right, a clean, intense sound that ends up throbbing so loud it rumbles all over the dance floor, just when everybody thought they couldn’t go for any longer. The single is backed by a Dopamine remix, a stripped back, minimal journey that’ll leave anyone within five feet feeling itchy, restless and ready to go past dawn and into the beyond.
This is one for the crate diggers. They’ll find it during an afternoon spent trawling through the new releases and take it home, wrapped up like a closely guarded secret. Because this record bristles and throbs. It gets under the skin and warps the mind a little. Just how we all like it.
ian's note: Sam Hell in 07. in 08 too. This dude seriously is awesome.
