I really wish Florida was like Cali and fall slam fuck off the map.

There's a few producers out there. alot of them are new but the rest of the music coming out of there is redundant and boring.

yup the cans open. lets go

Okay, I will admit, a lot of the breaks coming out of Florida these days aren't that good, with the exception of Icey, Fixx and Afterdark, and the Kaleidoscope gang. But, IMO, it is because of Florida that breaks exploded in the U.S.

No it really is. Shit has sucked in FL for years now. I used to like the FL stuff the most too, it's a shame.

There are still some good producers yeah, but they are all underground.

FL breaks used to be fun and get all different sorts of people dancing and bouncing around. Not so much these days.

I lived in south Fla back in 93-95 and absolutely loved the breaks then. In the past few years I haven't even thought of Fla and breaks together....disappointing considering the way it was.

Breakbeats are like head. Even when it's bad it's usually still good.

That being said, I don't call the girls back who suck at giving head. And I won't be buying any Florida breaks any time soon.

And yes, even though Icey can sometimes disappoint when it comes to mixes, his production, IMO, has always been on point.

I have a better question for this thread.....

What defines Florida breaks for you?

Florida breaks now or circa 1998? I think there is a distinct difference.

Well, since we live in the "now", lets go with that.

I honestly can not stand the breaks that I hear played in DC....I HATE them and I much rather hear something darker, evil, with sirens. But, not ravey, I can't stand fast paced trance-rave-breaks.

When I think Florida breaks from the mid 90's to early 00's, I think funkier breaks with samples from 80's pop, funk and hip hop. Currently I think FL Breaks share more in common with nu skool breaks, though when I was last in Florida heads I talked to down there kept calling the music they were producing electro breaks. I'm not sure why however, because there seemed to be a lack of electro characteristics to the tunes I heard, although I also saw electro bass being billed on the same flyer for parties down there.

I've heard some good breaks come through Baltimore/DC in the past couple years. The Breakfastaz have been through a couple times. Greg J and Myagi have been through. 30Hz have been through. Krafty Kuts, Rogue Element. Deekline, Lee Coombs.

When I lived in Florida for a year I foudn that a lot of people called breaks, "hardcore".

IE, I went to club 5 in Five points J-ville and everyone was screaming hardcore tonight!!! Jackal and Hyde were playing. Now, they are a prime example of what i would call Florida breaks, live of course. Because, when I think of Florida breaks, i think hard, dirty, evil beats. Some sirens and excellent build ups.

Not the electro crap that is destroying the sceen today...electro breaks this, electro that, leave the fucking 80's in the 80's.

breaks aren't my forte, but they are far from intolerable. but i must say that florida breaks are the cheese. not only that, but the cheese whiz even. florida breaks were the jam like 7 or 8 years ago. but now they are just sad.

edit: i agree on the myagi tip. i would be out to see that show.

youre a great critiquer (if thats a word)

now its my turn. may i please listen to your mix.

and the fundamental sessions was my going on my uk techy breaks only breaks trip that i quickly aborted because i wasnt even feeling it

but the sour diesel will have you shaking your ass like a gogo dancer. :booty:

and btw what kind of music do you spin?

I don't have a mix....why bother with the way the edm scene is going. I'm glad you got away from those kind of breaks...they are very bland. I can't stand tracks witha build up that only lets you down when it drops. I spin tech step. Renagade hardware is one of my fav. lables. But not the only one.

Also, a little bit of breaks for fun (afterdark, etc...) and tribal house.

I love percussion if you can't tell. I'm starting your new mix up right now.

Oh, and it's critic.

Ok. first and formost, excellent mix. The first 20 minutes kept me hanging in with groove-dirty beats. It gets a lot funkier from there on in. All vocals are cool and laid-back, very easy on the ear. Then 20min-50min mark was just incredible with an excellent track selektion. I was sad to hear it end, I want more! I will be burning this to disc for sure to listen to it in my car. It is surely worthy of the solobarics and MB quarts
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vinylorbit/ATT38339.jpg

The entire mix is bass heavy and doesn't let up. Every drop leaves me satisfied and wanting more. Basically, it's eveything I think breaks should be. Kudos.

it's quite possible you just don't grasp the concept of "uk techy breaks"

it's ok tho, you also don't think jackal and hyde are electro.

Not the electro crap that is destroying the sceen today...electro breaks this, electro that, leave the fucking 80's in the 80's.

and it has been a long time. how the eff are you? =)

I really wish Florida was like Cali and fall slam fuck off the map.

There's a few producers out there. alot of them are new but the rest of the music coming out of there is redundant and boring.

yup the cans open. lets go

I grew up in Florida. I left in '04. Most people in Florida who spin breaks spin electro breaks from the UK and Germany and some none cheezy Florida breaks. The best Florida breaks were from '94-'00. Florida DJ's know about the cheese that only an 18 yr old newbie would like. Tree, Just funkin, Fragile, Hallucination, Fresh...etc are some good labels

'95-'97 in Barcelona, absorbed Gabber/Scouse House, German Trance
'97-'04 in Ft lauderdale, absorbed Hard/House Trance, Prog/Tech House and Electro breaks, I HATED slow Tribal and straight House.
04'-08 absorbed the hated to an extent.

Sharaz IS a great DJ. He does put out good productions but he also has other hobbies and interests as well as DJing. He has his own real estate company out in FL as well as being an avid pilot.

For the record he's had some #1 billboard chart tracks (the song with Everything But the Girl & another with Afrika Bambatta)

His last CD (Rust) is solid with alot of good tunes that I would still play out today, if I played that sort of breaks anymore, plus he's a really nice guy. I'd prefer to see Sharaz spin over Icey any day.

He has put out good tracks recently. Mostly re-edits of some of his older catalogue.

Yea, Sharaz is the fucking shit. I would have to agree about seeing him over Icey. Don't get me wrong, Icey is still my favorite DJ, but I've seen him so many times now, I kind of know what to expect.

Sharaz on the other hand, I've only seen him once, and that was back in 02, so it would be a real treat to see him again.

Yeah i think all that shit Agent K, J Break, and dj Trashy puts out is cheesy. I dont know what other word explains it to be honest. At least Dj Mondo from Tampa didnt go that route or id have to go back down there and rip him a new one. I used to hate when those cheesy breaks producers used to come to the Amp in Ybor City. They would broadcast live every fri on 93.3 and id only listen to Mondo's set and then turn it off before the Headliner cheeseballs went on. I hope i dont offend dj Bella when i talk about Agent K like that, its just my opinon. Put props to all of those guys who put out massive amounts of tracks.

Breakbeats are like head. Even when it's bad it's usually still good.

That being said, I don't call the girls back who suck at giving head. And I won't be buying any Florida breaks any time soon.

Amen. Florida breaks are a lot like head. They suck dick.

this issue there is sharaz just isnt current anymore.. back in the day i would have to agree with you. but as i have seen posted, most of his material are re-edits..

icey on the other hand is still pushing the sound into different sub-genres. some good, some iffy..

you are 100% unbookable if you try and stick to a solid funky break set.. the 4/4 infusion as well as choppy beats and electro stabs is a must.

for that, i still hold icey high since he is still active in pursuing it..

times are changin.. but even as all these sub genres come and go.. the classic funk will never die.

if the USA stores would stop letting every blender mashup online for sale, maybe some younger producers would take more pride in their work.

also, if promoters stopped booking the same 5 djs over and over, more locals across the land would have more drive and incentive.

currently, there just isnt much payoff in really digging into building the domestic scene back.

its no suprise there are only about 3 domestic labels still pressing, and yes... the are all from florida.

until somebody steps up and does something else, thats how it will be..

i rather be from florida and active, then sitting on my ass bitching and not be.

so... find me something better.., shit.. i'll even press it for them.

thats because funky breaks leave you where they found you, same spot same mood, waiting on the next dj

i rather be from florida and active, then sitting on my ass bitching and not be.

what exactly is active? please elaborate on this one.

also, if promoters stopped booking the same 5 djs over and over, more locals across the land would have more drive and incentive.

thats pretty much anywhere. locals are locals, you know how that goes. and even though Florida is a big state, you are still a local there, no matter how much you do. Icey, Baby Anne, Mondo, Fixx, yhe both of you, Infiniti, Sharaz, I mean i could really go on for a while, but thats just the scene, no matter where you go.
