View Full Version : DC Salons - Non-Traditional hair coloring?

So if someone that lived in the district (and needed for the place to be local and metro accessible) was seeking a decent Salon that can handle doing a dye job that involved cupcake pink...where would one go?

Preferably a place that won't violate the wallet in ridiculous ways but at the same time, won't fuck up the coloring.

A, uhh, friends wants to know.

Don't go to Bang at Gallery Place, Katie went there on Saturday and they didn't even get close to what she wanted.

They didn't fuck her shit up, they just didn't do much while charging her as if they did.

I was just going to suggest Bang but not based off personal experience. Seems like a lot of other bzzbrdr's go there and like it.

There are 2 Bang locations, one @ Gallery Place and one on U Street, -literally- across the street from my apartment...that's the main reason I go there. I've heard some people classify Bang as "hit or miss," but the guy who cuts my hair does a good job & he's cool to jive with as well.

As far as recommendations on their hair coloring, I have no personal frame of reference; haven't heard anything one way or the other from anyone else, either.

Dang it.

What's their pricing like at least?

badkitty3804
2007-11-05, 11:23 AM
NM. Found their site.

Do you have to specially request that they stock funky colors, or do they already carry it? I think that's the tricky thing at this point...would the pink dye need to be purchased in advance?

maynard
2007-11-05, 11:25 AM
I'm not sure...I'd call ahead though. And I pay $33.

edit: (ah, just saw you found pricing)

I'm actually emailing them now.

I live biking distance from the U-Street location, so that would be the one to hit. And on their website, they have a few that apparently specialize in funky coloring...

All the staff have pretty unique hairstyles. They have a few punk rock-ish stylists that would probably be up your alley as far as 'different' hair colors go.

Just don't kill me if it doesn't go as you hope.

Maybe.

She went there and wanted to be a blonde but the guy apparently told her A) "is his your natural hair color? well it's *mousey*." and that B) he didn't want to do anything "too dramatic" in terms of coloring.

first off, who the fuck does this guy think he is saying what he will do and won't do when she's paying almost $200 for a hair cut and coloring, if she wants to be a blonde then he should get it fucking done.

second, what the fuck does "mousey" mean? apparently the way he said it made Katie feel it was in a negative context and she wasn't too pleased.

it could have been a one time thing on Bang's part, but as far as the future goes, i know she plans on never going back.

Any time a client requested funky colors, we would either tell them to go pick out their color from a beauty-supply store, or we would send someone to go buy it from the beauty supply across the way for them. That would incur a seperate charge, though.

I suggest finding a Sally's or Davidson's and picking out the color beforehand to take with you for your appointment. Just be sure to mention the funky color when making the appointment. Some stylists are better at it than others.

Mousey is a nice way of saying 'homely blonde', which means it doesn't shine or reflect much light, and it doesn't have any varying tones. It's just a flat, dish-water kind of color. It's not an insult, per se. But I think he was trying to say she had a boring natural color. Which can be taken as offensive depending on the tone of voice and context and etc.

So yeah. I would've given him the 'Z for Zorro' snapping action and walked out.

In the email to Bang, I sent them the link of the color that I wanted actually.

Just need to know if it needs to be pre-ordered or not.

Hair stylists tend to be pretty damn blunt about stuff. I've had a lot of situations where they were just saying it like it is, and it kind of came across as an insult. That's why it's good to find a regular stylist, build a bit of a relationship with them and they're not as likely to catch you off guard with comments like that.

What is her natural color? I can only see him not wanting to go *too* dramatic if it was a brunette shade, which can result in brassy color and orangey tones if you jump too fast between shades, or at least massive damage from over-processing in one sitting...

DO NOT GO TO BANG ON U STREET.

I tried them once a couple years ago and they were fucking terrible. Not only did my haircut suck, but they were really cold and acted like I was inconveniencing them and rushed me through the whole thing. They were awful.

GO TO HUGO

Hugo is the shit. I just went to them last month and got the best color job and cut I have had in a few years... maybe more.... or even ever.

Hugo is the shit with hair color. They are in Kensington, so I'm not sure how metro accessible that is... it would be worth getting a ride from someone or grabbing a cab from the metro if you want your hair color done right though.

Rawk.

I've seen some of your coloring, so I know you've got taste with funky stuff. Plus since you drop as much as you do on having straight hair, I KNOW you take your hair serious.

If they get that kind of recommendation, I'd hop on the train and either walk, bike or cab to the shop. Wouldn't be an issue with going through more effort. Any stylist specifically?

and yea... mousy can mean a dull brown color too. My natural hair color is a bit mousy, that is why I have it colored a richer brunette that is a lot more shiny.

I'm not sure why he wouldn't take her to blonde unless she has some pre-existing chemical damage. If there is any damage to her hair, the process of going blonde can be dangerous as it can make hair break and fall out.

Tell her to go to hugo.

When I went, a guy named Gustaf (sp?) did mine. He was very fabulous and friendly. I know a lot of people go to Hugo and go to various stylists (Lauren (cleophite), Inna K, and some others that I'm blanking on at the moment). They definitely seem to specialize in funky hair colors and cuts, but they can do good subtle stuff too.

So I think you would be good with anyone you went to there.

Cliff, tell Katie to try this place next time:

http://www.mancinideparis.com/main.html

They're similarly priced to Bang but I've had an excellent experience with them so far. I was in the McLean location but the people there were really friendly, warm even, and the stylist I worked with knew exactly what I was asking for. She's the first person I've worked with up here that actually cut my hair correctly.

I have no idea how the people are at the Arlington location but from what I understand the chain owner works there and he's supposed to do great things.

Her hair was untouched by any chems for over a few years now, as far as dying goes and all that jazz.

Dez (childofthebeat on this board) has recommended urban style lab in Dupont, and the reviews I've read on yelp were all positive... but if that place doesn't work out then i'll suggest to her that she needs to make the trek up to Wheaton.

Umm. It will be *hidden* during the work day.

I've hit a wall with being annoyed about not doing something because of having to look professional 8-5pm/M-F, so I'm taking a slightly different approach to things.

you should just get a wig to wear to work.

I wish I was able to dye my hair fun colors :-( but its either straight or fun colors and I can't have both. :-/ no bleach allowed in my hair.

badkitty3804

I've never been able to do it.

When I was younger, I had cherry red dye to do it, but my mom cut that off as I was prepping, and I had threats of getting my rear kicked if I ever touched it with colored dye. And pretty much right out of my parent's being able to dictate what I could or couldn't do with my hair, I was in the realm of working and not being able to go crazy.
