Mike Grimes and Pete Emes are those dudes known as Smalltown DJs. Based in Calgary, AB - they currently (since 1999) run a weekly known as Hai Karate. Hai Karate and the Smalltown DJs were born out of the ashes of old style block parties, punk rock shows at community halls and the early nineties rave scene. Hanging with these dudes on any given night you will hear funk, pop, dancehall, rock, hip hop, house, breaks, club and bmore. No pretension allowed, only party and dance. The duo has released several mix cds and vinyl 12"s over the past few years - garnering attention and accolades from the far reaches of the globe. They were featured on national television in April 2006 - on Much Music's Going Coastal. Circa Footwear has been sponsoring Smalltown's endeavours since 2000, helping to make sure they always look good. The Hai Karate Allstar remix Eps are being released in 2006 to celebrate the night's sixth anniversary.Over the past six years the Smalltown Djs have hosted and played alongside such artsits as Afrika Bambaataa, Lateef, Lyrics Born, Dj Assault, Jeru the Damaja, Tommie Sunshine, Chromeo, Mike Relm, Cosmo Baker and Dj Ayres ATrak, Low Budget, Diplo, James Lavelle, Kool Keith, Z-trip and Dj Radar, Fort Knox Five, and Maseo from De la Soul among many others. Matt and the DNB dudes upstairs were the only salvation last night. Dave Nada and the guy after him played nothing but hip-hop. Even my girl who likes hip hop was like, mix it up a bit more. It seemed like they were catering to the drunken, grind any girl crowd that I can't stand. I left about 1am because I couldn't take any more of that crap. DNB upstairs would have saved me if they were allowed to turn up the tunes to a decent volume, and if it wasn't packed with mid-townie smokers.

I had a fucking blast last night. I barely get to make it out to parties Im not djing at these days but man, I am really glad I came out last night. The music was lots of fun...altho I could only probably listen to those guys once a year. I swear I heard Daft Punk and Kanye West's new track and Prince "kiss" 3 times each lol. Other than that the vibe was INSANE. Harry had me fucking jamming to ol skool on the roof (sorry I missed your set Mikey). Eric and Binger were the designated drunk asses for the night- hope you boys got home safe.

Sorry you didnt have a good night ricke...but you realize thats the kind of music those guys play right? And the volume on the roof is something we have had to deal with for a few months now at FIVE- its either lower volume or no volume due to many recent noise complaints.

Glad you and everyone else that was coming up to me during the set enjoyed it. I went more for dancefloor stuff instead of the techy stuff, and really liked the feel of it. Looks like I might be playing the main room of Five in January for an old school night, so I'll probably play similar tunes albeit louder than I could on the roof.

And that volume limiting of the roof I didn't know about until I was playing :(
