View Full Version : WTF is wrong with my face??

Ok, so I've never had acne before, not even when I was a teenager. Now my face is being covered by giant ugly gross zits. What the hell can I do?

Might be a hormone change causing it, I would take into account the BC you're on (if you're on one), that can be known to cause acne.

I've never had acne myself, but I would imagine acne specific products and treatments would be your answer

Your face is wrong with your face OOOH!

Yeah sorry anyways. I've actually had clear skin most of my life but have recently started getting zits again. I've attributed it to my stopping birth control for the first time in a couple years. I've just been stepping up my skin care routine and it seems to have balanced it out somewhat.

Have you switched makeup brands lately? Using old stuff? Chemical change in the product you use to clean your skin? Drinking enough water? Putting your palm/fingers on your face a lot? Have a clean pillow-case? Change your BC?

I read at some point BP (benzoyl peroxide) was much worse for your face than alcohol products. Good ol' Seabreeze is great for excess oil.

Don't pick at it! All the causes for acne have been mentioned but until you figure it out DO NOT pick at your face. Dermatologists have told me this my whole life and I didn't listen until it was too late. My face is pretty badly scarred in a lot of places.

I would try washing your hands often and not trying to do too much all at once to your face. Just start a regimen and stick with it, and try not to touch your face.

this just recently started happening to me too...i used to only get one once a month (when it was that time) and now they pop up and attack mainly my chin...i've tried all sorts of stuff and nothing worked...finally i broke down and ordered proactive...i didn't think my acne is bad enough to order proactive but i hated the way my chin was looking... i've only had 1 zit in a month since i started proactive and it came and went in 1 day...

Food is not always the cause of acne for most people. For most women hormones are the cause of acne. I never eat fast food, all my food is fresh/mostly organic and I drink tons of water but I still have acne.

However the week before my period I start to break out a bit (like right now. ugh)

My Uncle is a dermatologist, and he has told me that a poor diet has very little to do with acne, because it is namely caused by hormones, and eating all the twinkies in the world won't throw off balanced hormones.

In his medical opinion: Smoking affects your skin. Cigarettes or otherwise. Not being properly hydrated will damage your skin's ability to repair itself. Putting dirt/bacteria on your face (from fingers, palms, pillowcases, makeup, etc) will feed bacteria under your skin, making acne worse. Stress can play a huge factor, especially when made worse by PMS. Certain types of birth control can make or break acne.

I have dealt with it since the age of 12. My methods for keeping it tame/getting rid of it:

Quality birth control: I use Yaz. It is flippin' awesome.
Proactiv: Pricey. It will make your acne go away within 2-4 weeks. But once you stop using it, your acne will come back with a raging vengeance.
Daily wash regimen: You have to try different stuff, because everyone's chemistry is different. I have had good results with Garnier Nutritionist, Aveeno and St. Ives. And I can give you all kinds of different suggestions on combos and routines if you need them.
Vitamins: Supplements for Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc can benefit your pores, also Vitamins A-D. I take OneADay along with some supplements to keep my immune system up.
Clean Makeup: Even if you only wear it once a week, you can have a delicate skin balance or sensitive skin, so only wear water-based foundations, and don't wear anything containing oil. Look for labels that say 'Non-comedogenic'.

Any other questions/concerns, just PM me. Unfortunately I am a self-made master of dealing with bad skin. Thanks Mom and Dad.

Dude, I've recently had more breakouts than normal too. WTF?

My diet is pretty good, I'm trying to exercise as much as I can...yeah. Still there. I need to get back on BC, I've been off it for about 5 months now and I've noticed that my skin was clearer when I was on it.

Another thing I noticed (for me) that caused breakouts was using cheap makeup. I can't do it. It's expensive stuff all the way or nothing.

Sigh. I never had skin problems when I was going through puberty, why now? Nofe air, I say. :angryasian:

Aw, really? :sok: Maybe you weren't on a good dosage? I had mine tweaked before it really did the trick.

I can honestly say, though.. I have been on at least 5 different pills in the past year and Yaz is the only one that cleared my skin, controlled my mood swings and made my Flo visits a whisper of what they once were.

Plus, my dosage is so low, I only have to see Flo 4 times a year. :woot:

I was the same way. I was the bitch that had perfect skin in HS that everyone was bitter about.

Then college hit and my skin decided it was time for a revolution!

I've been on the generic of Ortho-Tri, and it really did wonders with regulating my hormones and really cut down on skin issues. The combo of drinking more water, cutting out caffiene and maintaining a steady BC routine have all helped with getting it better. You can actually tell when I slack with one of them.

That has everything to do with it.

There are some really simple fundamentals for keeping a complexion as clear as your genetics will allow for**:
* Get plenty of sleep, and get it at the right time
* Drink a LOT of water
* Eat a nutritious, balanced diet. You are what you eat. If you eat shit, eventually you will look and feel like it, too.
* Wash/change your pillowcases frequently, as well as whatever towel you use to dry your face after washing it
* Exercise
* DO NOT PICK at your face or TOUCH it any more than is absolutely necessary
* Don't over-cleanse; use a gentle cleanser and a moisturizer that fits your skin 'type', but don't use any overly-harsh scrubs, especially when your skin is broken out

**If you're doing all of the above things, and your skin is still fucked up after a solid month or two, go see a dermatologist

dont know if anyone has mentioned Zeno, but it is awesome. i recently bought it because i started breaking out with my pregnancy, but dont want to put any chemicals on my skin. my sister has been using this for as while and also swears by it.

http://www.myzeno.com/

Zeno is a hand-held battery-operated device designed with a tip that heats to a pre-set temperature. The biocompatible tip is designed for direct contact with a blemish on the skin. Once in contact with a blemish, the tip will transfer heat into the follicle. An internal PID controller chip continually modulates the temperature to a fixed range even under different skin and circulation conditions by adjusting the flow of energy to match precisely the heat absorption of the individual user. Zeno’s microprocessor adapts not only to your individual skin type but also to the heat absorption characteristics of the location of the pimple. Your Zeno adapts to you! An integral digital timer controls the treatment time. The level of heat does not cause skin damage.

Specifically, Zeno stimulates a heat-shock response in p. acnes, the bacteria causing at least 90% of all acne blemishes. Heat shock proteins, activated by bacterial cells under heat stress, cause the self-destruction of p. acnes within the lesion, reducing inflammation and allowing the skin to return to a healthy state.

Hmm...

From what I've read about the home-versions of laser and heat treatments, they aren't technically strong enough to do the job...maybe that product is an exception though  or maybe a placebo effect

Is it 'spensive?

all the reviews i read for zeno are really good. google "zeno reviews" and you will see what i mean.

It was kinda expensive, about $150-$200, but i think it is worth it.

i get pimples that are super deep and normally take a week to dissapear, after 2, 2.5 min, zeno treatments, they are gone (one in the AM, one before bed and they are gone the next day.)

the annoying thing is that you have to replace the tip, but there is a way around that. (everything is hackable)

i call them "vagina pimples" cuz i normally get them right before my period and they seem to be rooted somewhere in my vagina and flare up at my chin.

if you order through their website they do offer a 30-day money back guarantee. they are also sold at Target and Sephora, both of which have decent return policies.

Exactly, except that they last as long as they want on me, and show up wherever. But they're definitely hormonal.

I usually only get spots on my chin when I'm a dumbass and put my hands on my face too much, or rest my chin on my hand a lot.

If I decide on that thing, perhaps it will go on my Christmas list. Well, and I'll get it for myself because I would be too disgusted to be like "oh hey, will you buy me a pimple zapper?"

i used to do horrible things to my pimples like that.

a couple of times i would get so sick of them that i would heat up a needle and stick it in. really gross i know. but when they are so deep, they are really hard to deal with and honestly, start to hurt after a while.

i guess those times i just gave up and figured i would rather have a huge face-wound then a huge glowing red pimple. WhyTF do they have to be so shiny? its like rudolph's nose guiding santa through the night.

It TOTALLY is because of hormones.

I, too, never ever ever had a prob as a teen but in mid-20's everything went haywire.

Maturing hormones, preparing for pregnancy/maturation, and becoming pregnant - any kind of increase in estrogen is a huge, significant cause of adult acne.

It's NOT makeup, the air, what you're eating. It's hormones. Try ProActive or something similar. Perhaps changing your BC MAY help.

* Wash/change your pillowcases frequently, as well as whatever towel you use to dry your face after washing it
* Exercise

It's a neat little gadget. I think my acne is a little more severe than it is recommended for. I've used it about 10 times so far and it hasn't really prevented the blemish from coming in.

It really only treats the symptom and not the disease. I was just hoping to help reduce the scarring I seem to be experiencing more lately.

General rule of thumb with skin or skin related infections, if it's dry keep it moist, if it's moist keep it dry.

Try some Neosporin rather than moisturizer because of the possible fragrances and other BS in moisturizers these days. I would just do it at night time for a week or so and see what happens. It could be allergy related or contact dermatitis so yeah.. neosporin would be my best guess as a quick fix.

I've been making a definite effort to keep it moisturized. I just looked in my flickr album to see if there were any close-ups that show it, but there aren't. It's not very noticeable, but I still want to get rid of it. Just hoping to avoid a f'ing trip to a dermatologist. :sadblue:

My face has been breaking out here and there lately. I think part of it has to do with my job, because I'm around a lot of things that are new, as far as chemicals and stuff go. Also, you sometimes run into a dog or cat that has oily skin, and when you're getting all up close and personal with them, you really can't help but come in contact with it.

Otherwise, my skin has always been fairly clear.

But I also agree that eating healthy and drinking more water helps a lot.

I don't have a big zit problem other than a random one here an there. I DEF have noticed that when I switch makeup/face lotions more will appear.

Oil of Olay is BAD NEWS for me. I've notcied more showing up since using it.

In the winter I've noticed dry, red blotchy spots on my neck and chest sometimes. Not on my face thankfully. I'll throw some cocoa butter on it and it'll kinda go away. I only get this in the winter so I'm hoping it's just the need to lube up or something. Cold weather and my skin do not mix well.

:sadblue:

i haven't read this thread in it's entirety but i can totally relate to this issue. i also have been breaking out terribly for the last year or so. i never really had this problem as a teenager either (only one or two during that time of the month). Now i break out all the time and usually have at least one active zit on my face at all times. i don't wear a lot of make-up (powder, mascara, lipgloss), and only foundation on very special occasions. i have always used the same brand of make-up as well, so i don't think it's make-up related. i don't take bc pills, so it can't be that either. i was thinking age/hormone changes. i was talking to my mother about this and she says that all women go through this, usually when they are in their 30's. it's very embarrassing, i know! and as far as scarring goes, i have picked at them and now they've left scars, so if u can help it, don't pick. lately, i've been using an oil free facial cleanser, acne cream, a light oil-free facial moisturizer, and have been trying not to wear powder every day. also i have terrible acne on my back, which i have always had. does anyone else have this problem and if so, what have you done for it?

This may not be the most realistic solution, but have you tried not wearing any makeup on your face for a week or two?

I'm so lucky that my skin is fair enough that I don't really need foundation to even my tone out - I can't imagine how unhappy my skin would be with me if I had to wear it for almost every waking moment. I know you've mentioned having sensitive skin before, too... maybe try not wearing anything on the next vacation you take? I dunno, I guess that's not a very realisitic idea...
