Lipsticks tested by a U.S. consumer rights group found that more than half contained lead and some popular brands including Cover Girl, L'Oreal and Christian Dior had more lead than others, the group said on Thursday.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics said tests on 33 brand-name red lipsticks by the Bodycote Testing Group in Santa Fe Spring, California, found that 61 percent had detectable lead levels of 0.03 to 0.65 parts per million (ppm).

Lipstick, like candy, is ingested. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a coalition of public health, environmental and women's groups, said the FDA has not set a limit for lead in lipstick.

One-third of the lipsticks tested contained an amount of lead that exceeded the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's 0.1 ppm limit for lead in candy -- a standard established to protect children from ingesting lead, the group said. Thirty-nine percent of the lipsticks tested had no discernible lead, it said.

"It's critical that manufacturers reformulate their product," said Stacy Malkan, a co-founder of the coalition. "It's possible to make lipsticks without lead, and all companies should be doing that."

Lead can cause learning, language and behavioral problems such as reduced school performance and increased aggression. Pregnant women and young children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure, the group said in its statement. Lead has also been linked to infertility and miscarriage, it said.

Procter & Gamble Co's makes Cover Girl brand and France's L'Oreal is one of the largest cosmetic companies in the world.

Over the last three months, more than 20 million toys made in China have been recalled, mostly due to the use of lead paint.

The coalition said that some less expensive brands it had tested, such as Revlon, had no detectable levels of lead, while the more expensive Dior Addict brand had higher levels than some other brands.

The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association trade group said in a statement that lead was a naturally occurring element that was not intentionally added to cosmetics.

The FDA has "set strict limits for lead levels allowed in the colors used in lipsticks, and actually analyze most of these to ensure they are followed," the association's statement said. "The products identified in the (CSC) report meet these standards."

L'Oreal's U.S. arm said its products are reviewed and tested by a safety team that includes toxicologists, pharmacists and doctors.

"All the brands of the L'Oreal Group are in full compliance with FDA regulations" as well as safety requirements in international markets, L'Oreal USA said in a statement.

P&G said in a statement that the quantity of lead a consumer might be exposed to from its lip product "is hundreds of times less than the amount that she would get from eating, breathing and drinking water."

"Lead builds up in the body over time and lead-containing lipstick applied several times a day, every day, can add up to significant exposure levels. The latest studies show there is no safe level of lead exposure," said Dr. Mark Mitchell, president of the Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice.

Glorious!

I don't remember exactly what the figure was, but the average woman apparently ingests a few pounds of lipstick in a lifetime.

I remember the first time I wore lipstick... my mother told me I looked like a parrot floozie... I sorta never really wore it again. I mean, I'll wear it once or twice a year maybe.. but I ADORE Liz's selection of lip gloss.

Sparkle! (and Science!)

That reminds me we still haven't managed to all be at the same party at once so we can squirt lipgloss all over each other (i.e., swap glosses).

Fuck it.

Given the way I roll, if it's the make up and beauty products that do me in first...rock the funk on.

I personally have bets for something ridiculous taking me out first, like getting a stiletto heel stuck in a storm drain while crossing the street and getting taken out by a Segway.

Helluva way to go out!

Any chance that these products are made in China or is it just Proctor & Gamble's recipe to put lead in their lipsticks?

I haven't worn red lipstick since New Years. It's so hard finding a decent one that it's almost not worth it. *ALMOST*

Nars makes a great red gloss/stain.

I have not yet worn it in public. It's the type where if you smear it by accident, it stains wherever it touches. YAY. But the color is beautiful.

I am the same way with the dark circles. You are Italian, yes?

And the lip thing...yeah. Let's just say I play up my eyes and keep it minimal with the lips for a reason. The klutz-factor is high with this one. Pretty and sheer shades of clear, pinks, nudes, bronzes/golds, and the like are my fav. And a whole lot of lip balm.

All of the women on my Italian side have dark circles, which of course is only accented by high cheekbones and a generally...structured (?) face. THUPER!

I've always stalked the stains, but haven't had the balls to try it just yet.

Revlon makes one called "Just Bitten", and they have it in a shade of red that seems like it would be hot. And it's cheaper than stains at Sephora, so it would be a good 'lets see how these stain thingers work out for me...". Maybe I'll pick up a tube on the walk home.

I think my lips may just be really sensitive but I know that Emma, Chrissi, Alexis and Desi saw what happened that day at ULTA. I've found another product that gave me an allergic reaction and it does not have lip plumping elements in it. It's called Stainiac:

http://a1377.g.akamai.net/7/1377/8278/20050418223541/www.sephora.com/assets/dyn/product/P104014/P104014_hero.jpg

Stainiac
The perfect pop of color for your cheeks and lips, Stainiac hint of tint is perfect for all skin tones. Simply dab a touch onto your cheeks for a sheer wash of color or layer for added intensity. And the best part? Stainiac is formulated to give you more time before the stain sets, so it won't streak.

I tried it last weekend and nothing immediate happened, but the next day my lips were burning really badly. Very weird.

Do not buy.

Worth reposting.

I try to avoid lip plumpers.

I found out by accident a few years back that I'm extremely sensitive to peppermint, and a lot of lip plumpers/bee stings use that as an active ingredient.

I just want red lipstick that'll hang around past the first few drinks. :sadpanda:

Try MAC pro longwear lipcolor. I bought some new cosmetics a few weeks ago and I tested that. It really stays on. I tested some on my hand and I had to scrub pretty hard to wash it off a few hours later.

The FDA has "set strict limits for lead levels allowed in the colors used in lipsticks, and actually analyze most of these to ensure they are followed," the association's statement said. "The products identified in the (CSC) report meet these standards."

"All the brands of the L'Oreal Group are in full compliance with FDA regulations" as well as safety requirements in international markets, L'Oreal USA said in a statement.

FDA has set regulatory standards of what can be included in cosmetics & has done extensive testing on what levels are safe for injestion and then usually sets the maximum level lower than that. I'm not saying that it should automatically be assumed that these levels are safe, but extensive testing has been done for what safe levels are, the numbers aren't arbitrary.

This article is also misleading in that it's trying to say that lipstick, intended for external use by adults, is dangerous because it has higher levels than toys intended for children, with the expectation they might end up in the child's mouth... They're comparing two different populations and two different, potential methods of introducing lead into the system. People shouldn't be alarmed that an external product has something at a higher level than candy... Yes, inevitably you will injest lipstick, but not in the same amounts as you would candy.
