Three or more drinks a day, whether beer, wine or spirits, boost a woman's risk of breast cancer as much as smoking a pack of cigarettes, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.
The relationship between alcohol and breast cancer is known but there has been little data on whether the choice of drink made a difference, they told a European Cancer Conference.
In what the researchers said was one of the largest studies to investigate links between breast cancer and alcohol -- found that alcohol itself and the amount a person consumed were key rather than the type of drink.
"Studies have consistently linked drinking alcohol to an increased risk of female breast cancer, but until now there has been little data, most of it conflicting, about an independent role played by the choice of beverage type," Arthur Klatsky of Kaiser Permanente in California and one of the researchers said.
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer killer of women, after lung cancer. It will be diagnosed in 1.2 million people globally this year and will kill 500,000.
Other studies have shown that light- to moderate alcohol use can protect against heart attacks, though Klatsky said other mechanisms were probably at work.
The heart protection likely comes from alcohol-induced "good" cholesterol, reduced blood clotting and decreased diabetes risk. But for breast cancer, the ethyl alcohol found in all booze likely ups the risk, the researchers said.
The researchers looked at the drinking habits of more than 70,000 women from a variety of ethnic backgrounds who supplied information during health examinations between 1978 and 1985. By 2004, nearly 3,000 of the women were diagnosed with breast cancer.
Among women who drank, the team examined a preference for a type of alcohol and how much of each drink people consumed. They also compared the total amount consumed and compared it to women who drank less than one drink a day.
Women who drank between one and two alcoholic drinks per day increased their risk of breast cancer by 10 percent compared with people who consumed less than one drink each day, the study found. The risk of breast cancer jumped by 30 percent in women who drank more than three drinks a day.
The results were also similar in different age and ethnic groups, the researchers said.

Thanks to family history, I'm at extremely high risk for Cervical Cancer, Breasticle Cancer and Diabeeeetus.
Pretty much all lifestyles are going to impacted somehow. If it's not alcohol that raises our chances, it's the food we eat and the packaging it comes in. If it's not that, it's the area we live in. If it's not that, it's our electronics. If it's not that, it by the Cancer fairy, which sneaks in through your window and night and takes a big chunk of your brain and leaves a nice bunching of malignant cells in it's place.
So to this, I'll take my 10% increased risk and enjoy my Guinness.

are they making these conclusions solely based on how much each person drank alcohol and who got cancer? it seems like there are alot more factors involved. alot of times people who drink less, also care more about their health, eat healthier foods, and have an overall healthier lifestyle. meh, i never trust stats.

Study links antibiotics and breast cancer
Monday, February 16, 2004 Posted: 8:44 PM EST (0144 GMT)
CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A study suggests antibiotics might increase the risk of developing breast cancer, but researchers said the data should not stop women from taking the medication.
Women who took the most antibiotics -- who had more than 25 prescriptions, or who took the drugs for at least 501 days -- faced double the risk of developing breast cancer over an average of about 17 years, compared with women who didn't use the drugs, the study showed.

Shampoo Ingredient Kills Rats' Brain Cells
By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter
MONDAY, Dec. 6 (HealthDayNews) -- Experiments with the brain cells of rats show that contact with an ingredient found in shampoos, hand lotions and paint causes neurons to die.
The chemical, methylisothiazolinone (MIT), belongs to a class of compounds called biocides. These are used in the manufacture of many common household products and industrial water cooling systems to prevent bacteria from developing.

BEIJING, April 22 -- Researchers have found that heavy consumers of processed meats are nearly 70 percent more likely to develop cancer of the pancreas.
The researchers found that heavy consumers of processed meats -- 40 grams a day or more -- were nearly 70 percent more likely to develop cancer of the pancreas than study participants with the lowest intake.
A large multiethnic study unveils that a diet containing lots of processed meats, like hot dogs and sausages, raises the risk of pancreatic cancer.

Breast cancer risk for left-handed
By Jacqueline Maley Medical Reporter
September 27, 2005
Left-handed women are more than twice as likely to develop pre-menopausal breast cancer, according to a study of more than 12,000 women that has experts puzzled.
"Although the underlying mechanisms remain elusive, our results support the hypothesis that left-handedness is related to increased risk of breast cancer," said the study's authors.

They just keep coming:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070927/hl_nm/cancer_divorce_dc
The risk of divorce increases if one partner suffers from testicular or cervical cancer, but other types have no effect on whether a couple stays together, Norwegian researchers said on Thursday.
With most forms of cancer, the healthy spouse was likely to support his or her partner through the illness, according to the study presented at the European Cancer Conference in Barcelona.
The research compared divorce rates of 215,000 cancer survivors with those among couples free of cancer over a 17-year period.
However, testicular and cervical cancer seemed to lead to a higher chance of marriages breaking up, the study found.
Women with cervical cancer had nearly a 70 percent greater risk of divorce at the age of 20, a level that fell to 19 percent at 60. For testicular cancer, the divorce risk was 34 percent at 20 and 16 percent at 60, it said.
The reason could be because both diseases affect intimacy and result in decreased sexual activity, said Astri Syse of the Norwegian Cancer Registry, who led the study.
The virus that caused cervical cancer was often transmitted by sexual contact and could raise suspicions of infidelity. Age was another possible factor, because both cancers tended to hit people when they were younger and had not yet forged strong bonds, Syse said.
"Sexual problems or a weakening of the emotional rewards from the union are particularly devastating early in a relationship and ... an increased care load is most difficult to accept at an age when illness is most unexpected," she said.
The study found divorce was least likely when the cancer had spread or for types of cancer that had a poor prognosis.
This could be because leaving a sick spouse was seen as socially unacceptable or because an expected death would obviate the need for a divorce, Syse said.
