the internet was invented to freak out pregnant women. everything is trying to kill your baby.
i stopped using all of my awesome Chick-Shat recommended products because they were not all natural.
sigh.
plenty of babies are weird and ugly. luckily, neither of my nephews were, so I didn't have to sit there and pretend they weren't hideous.

i watched some special on TLC when i was pregnant. it was about a little boy that was born a torso. no arms or legs. he rolled around everywhere. i was plagued with nightmares until i saw on the ultrasound that it had arms legs fingers and toes.
i also had nightmares about bathing the baby. in my dreams i would be giving the little baby a bath and then when i went to take it out, the baby would slip out of my hands and fall and bounce all over the floor.
for six months i bathed tori with those bath glove things so i wouldnt drop her.

ooh one thing i can contribute!
in my biochem classes, i learned that cortisol (the stress hormone) is an inhibitor of oxytocin (the "lovy" hormone, which also induces labor). so one of the most important things in having a smooth and as pain-free-as-possible labor is to be relaxed! getting stressed out and anxious prevents your body from producing the oxytocin naturally, and then the impatient obstetricians will give you pitocin intravenously, which will cause the levels to surge very quickly, which leads to massive contractions which are very painful.
what can you do to increase your oxytocin levels?
have sex
look at cuteoverload.com
hug and cuddle
think of generally heartwarming (not sad) things
make sure your SO is there and is being sweet and supportive
and above all...
don't panic!
anything that makes you go "awwwww" means you are producing oxytocin naturally, which will help prevent the need for artificial inducement.

http://www.holisticmoms.org/
I baby-sat for a woman that was a holistic healer. She was kind of awesome and kind of crazy at the same time. I started to lose a lot of weight (like 30 pounds and I was 135 to begin with) when I was working for her, so she did some muscle testing and gave me about 25 pills to take with every meal and told me not to eat milk or wheat for 3 weeks. Sure enough it cured me. I double checked with my endo doctor before I did it and she said there would be no harm and she's heard of stranger things working. I am a true believer in that stuff.
Also another side note, my roommate's mom was chair of le leche league for a long time. They're kind of nazi-ish about breast feading, which is obviously what's best, but did you know that when they were inventing formula they tested it on babies from third world countries and a lot of babies died before they got it right. I totally understand if you can't produce milk or you baby is allergic to your milk and you have to use formula, but from just an ethical standpoint I would not use formula.

thing is, they actually like that shit better until theyre of school age...then its just get the stuff everyone else has...just to have it.
seriously, the *only* toy my child liked and played with on a regular basis when she was little (2-4) was this little mermaid doll. everything else, the box it came in served her with wayyy more entertainment value.

epidural or natural?
:D
With Skylar I went as long as I could without an epidural.. I think I went like six or seven hours before I caved. Of course, they also induced me, so my labor started out a bit slow, and they had to bump me full of pitocin to get me going..
Claire, my water broke naturally, but they started the pitocin after five hours of hardly any contractions. As soon as I felt discomfort, I got the epidural.
There are severe complications that can occur with them. But all in all, I think it helped my labor for the most part - because you're finally not feeling the pain, and can relax and allow thing to progress.
I also contribute both my labors only being 10 hours long, to the fact that I had epidurals with both of them. Unlike many people who I've known to go without, and have to go through 18, 24, 36 hour labors.
If you can be a trooper and get through it without the drugs, I say go for it. More power to you. But anyone who makes someone feel bad about wanting to ease their own pain through labor is full of shit, and probably never had a kid. Because aside from maybe getting hit by a car, shot, etc., labor WILL be the MOST painful thing any woman will ever go through.

Hmmm..with my first one after I was induced they waited for me to dilate to 4cm...only problem is I went from 1cm to 6 then 8 then fully dilated within a matter of minutes.
With this one I don't know what I want to do-I HATE needles but the midwife said I should call to have it ready 'just in case'....I can't even think about that right now. :ponder:

I am a natural mom. Do the natural products, no chemicals in the house or in our bodies, eat vegan/vegetarian. It works for us and my kids are damn healthy. Anyone going to the Green Festival this weekend? Should be some great resources there.
LLL is a great support if you are unsure about breastfeeding. Breastfeeding can be challenging with your first one, especially if you aren't surrounded by people who support it. Plus often if you have a hospital birth and the nurses/doctors aren't 100% pro-nursing, they can pressure you to feed the baby formula until your milk comes in. Which of course, then affects when your milk comes in. Baby doesn't suck, milk takes longer to come.
I did both births naturally. My son, I was in labour for about two days. Active labour for a few hours. My daughter, well I slept through most of her labour and woke up, we tried to make it to the hospital and she was born in the car LOL We are having a homebirth with this baby (the other two we were overseas military and couldn't) and I am excited about not having to leave the house! The risks of an epidural aren't worth it to me. I like being able to run around a minute after birthing the placenta.
The best thing I can suggest is exercise! It really helps with labour and recovery. I think that was why my labour was so fast with my daugher. I was running several miles a day while pregnant with her. And she was big, almost ten pounds.

Keeping active definitely helps with quick deliveries. It also helps you not to tear so much, because you're in shape to push.
I rode my horses for the first 5 months of both pregnancies. By then I had started to get too big and a bit unbalanced, so I stopped. But even after I stopped riding, I still worked routinely at the barn cleaning stalls, and working my horses on the ground.
I even rode the day after I was supposed to be due with Skylar - all I did was walk my mare around the ring. I know several friends who've done it to help trigger labor. It didn't work for me so well though. I just had minor contractions that never really helped start anything. I was induced the next weekend because I was sick the whole nine months with Skylar, and could hardly ever keep any food down, causing me to have low blood pressure.

It could be that you're dehydrated too.
I had a serious problem with swelling...but that was because I never drank any damn water(hence dehydration)mostly because the taste would send me into a barfing fit. Drink lots of water and if the taste gets to you, try lemon with it.
As far as advice goes, there is going to be a ton of people/books/shows offering you advice. Listen, but take everything with a grain of salt. Ultimately, you'll find your way with or without 'pregnancy' advice. It comes to you more naturally then you know.
And if someone offers help TAKE IT! Believe me, I was the 'i can do it all' mom at first. Even if it's someone offering to spiffy your place up...every little bit helps.

the best part of having kids (from what I've seen from my girlfriend's little boys) is that you can dress them in little nikes and camo gear and get pictures of them leafing through daddy's jungle records. Pictures of little kids in adult clothes mimicking adult things take the cake.
