BUKEM IN SESSION TOUR

http://www.upfrontdc.com/5dnb/bukeminsession.jpg
LTJ BUKEM & MC CONRAD [ Good Looking Records ] - UK

Once again it is the return of the LTJ Bukem's Progression Sessions USA tour presented by Good Looking Records. As usual the head nodding bass will reach all corners of the US on a tour stretching from New York to LA to Seattle to provide a sound experience rarely heard and experienced. The tour line up offers sets from LTJ BUKEM with his distinguished sound that has placed him as a leading light in the Drum and Bass scene as a DJ, producer and founder of the pioneering Good Looking Records label. Along with the unmistakable vocals of MC CONRAD. Each year he adds a new and untouchable dimension to MCing and now his melodic harmonies that were created on his Logical Progression exploits have made it to the dance floor. If you have ever witnessed a Progression Sessions night you will know the high standard of music to expect and these tours are not something you can afford to miss.

BOBBY JAE [ Upfront | 5DNB ] - DC

Mastering the sounds of DC drum and bass, Bobby Jae never fails with his impeccable mixing and top-notch selection. Be sure to check out Bobby Jae's new highly anticipated mix, Upfront Drum n' Bass. This follow up to his URB Mix It Best classic, Perpetual Motion, is a veritable showcase of the liquid, funky sounds that many artists on the Upfront Industries roster are currently cultivating.

LOCKS of INTELLECT [ Contact Records ] - DC

Already collecting many genres of music for years– including house, breakbeats, and jungle– Locks of Intellect decided to make his mark in the Washington, DC area. He began DJing drum&bass in 1996, playing the many sub-genres of drum& bass through the years. Locks of Intellect more recently delves into the deepest realms of soulful drum&bass, taking you on a smooth rollercoaster ride of groove. It is obvious why Locks of Intellect has been on the forefront of the DC drum&bass movement for nearly a decade. Look out for future collaborations in production with his long-time DNB comrade Luis, as well as solo projects by Locks.

CAKES [ Sudden Depth Audio ] - DC

Originally inspired by LTJ Bukem's Logical Progression campaign in 1996, Cakes has long been a dedicated follower of deep drum and bass. He's been eagerly building a his vinyl collection ever since and makes it a point to always sneak in a surprise or two from his deep pool of records. Whether he's playing the old or the new you can always expect a blend of funk, soul and mysticism to come through in the mix.

cakes! upfront couldn't have picked a better DJ to compliment the sounds of LTJ. the man makes love to GLR promos. his pants just got tighter.

nice one on booking quixotic! he graduated the year before me (i think?) from centreville HS, and we used to go check him and his former crew put on showcases at the school "talent shows". used to rock the hell out of one of his mixtapes way back when.

check out his 1st place performance from the 2004 LA DMC comp:

:hifive:

I don't really consider myself a master of anything but sarcasm, but it was a welcome surprise to be asked to play this night. Respect to Bobby for the opportunity.

I plan on repping mid/late 90's stuff assuming I'm covering the "let's begin drinking" shift. It'll be in the vein of my EXBC set from a couple of weeks ago but more focused on Good Looking affiliated tings.

Mental note: I owe Ransom two drinks if he makes it out.

It was as busy as a Friday or Saturday night there. Whatever Upfront did to promote that night, they should keep it up.

it's funny you say that. Kelly and I were talking about how we hardly saw anything about the event.

Great night though. i stayed MUCH later than I had told myself I would and am going on 2 hours of sleep. WHOOPS!!

and fantabulous to meet miss emily!! you're a sweetheart!

It was mad-packed last night. Best turn out for a wednesday ever. I thought that LTJ was no better than some of our local heros tho. don't hate, but he just didn't do anything special. That said, i like my DNB darker and faster.
The roof went off!

I really wanted to come out to this. Between playing at Beyond then Rock n Roll Hotel right after, there was no way, but I want everyone to know how much I talked about missing Bukem while playing all night ;)

Hope everyone had a blast!

Didn't hear much of what was going on upstairs because the music downstairs was f*cking amazing! I have seen LTJ 4 or 5 times now, arguably one of his best sets I've heard him play. The crowd was great, tons of people there for a Wednesday and everyone seemed to be really getting into it.

On a side note, some chick was fucking around on the dance floor, threw a drink at someone which in her drunken state, ended up on MY face. Now if this person is on the buzzboard, and you see me out again, please just let me know your going to do that so I can at least give you a reason to throw a drink in my face, mmmkay?

what a night. club five was rammed till closing time. thanks to cakes, locks for great opening sets. bukem was amazing as usual. kickballers did a great job of keeping the rooftop jumping. big up to ken and crew for all the promotional hard work.

Bukem is a pretty universal draw. It seems like no matter what other styles of dance music people like (unless they only like hard dnb) they like Bukem.

So, I was not at all surprised at the turnout last night.

That said, I actually enjoyed Cakes set the most out of the night, I still think that was the best sound and era DnB has ever had (that late 90's-01 atmospheric sound) and it was nice to hear so many tunes I love but hadn't listened to in a while drop on a big system. Hearing that one Big Bud tune drop on Five's bass cabinets was worth $15 alone.

As far as Quixotic goes, I'm not positive I heard him, but whoever I did hear on the roof didn't really impress me. Yeah, there was tight scratching and some tricks, but when it came time to put 2 records together smoothly it just wasn't happening. On top of that, I wasn't feeling the set progression and record choice... A-Ha's Take On Me into a half time krunk song? Right after the first chorus? Nah. Totally killed the energy.

Thanks to Bobby and Ken for hosting. You all have no idea how much fun it was to play those old tunes LOUD. A special side thanks to Five for peaking the system early to get the sound right. I just wish I could have seen the dancefloor, especially when I cleared it with a Q-Project tune (who would ever think that). It was great to have Phill, Big Tunes Bryan, Mr. Sage and Agent Moonshine out early for my set. Thanks for the support to everyone else that was an early bird too. There really WAS a DJ playing, LOL.

Oh and if you were with that bachelorette party on the rooftop I'm sorry I wrote "deep throat = crucial" on your marriage advice t-shirt. Wait, no I'm not.

Conrad was on FIRE last night.

I played State of Mind as my third track I think. That's when they cranked the system up loud. I'm pretty sure that's the Bud tune he was talking about. I don't think I played any other Bud tracks. The last one I played was Car Crash (frantic amen and stand up bass line) you might be thinking of that if it was later in the set.

Yeah, that one, State of Mind. I had to go look at the record sleeve on discogs to figure out which track I was talking about, I'm terrible with the names of things. All I know is it's that one tune on Good Looking in the red sleeve that goes "woah oh... woah ohhhh... yeah yeah... yeah yeah..." in the breakdown, and then drops with that rolling bassline and soulful vocals.

Quixotic was the man! Mixing it up like every 30 seconds and bleeding any genres. I enjoyed his set more than any other last night.

Oh, no! I have a test tomorrow! Man, I missed them the last time they came through the Corridor! I am so, seriously disappointed I won't be seeing them.

Darn you, college!

I had two papers due and a test in the afternoon but I still went out.

Bukem's set was amazing as always!
