Well "best" is a very subjective term. It depends what you are looking to get out of it.

I can tell you a few that I couldnt live without:

Trilogy by Spectrasonics.- This is it when it comes to a bass synth. It is a sample based VST that is used heavily in the EDM community.

(this isnt a synth) but Battery 2 by NI- hands down my favorite sampler to use for drums. (not just drums either, you can use it for any samples you want to plug into it)

I also am a big fan of: the entire Native Instruments line (Electrik Piano is one I use a lot), Lounge Lizard, Broomstick Bass, FM7, B4, Arturia's: Moog Modular, MiniMoog, ARP2600, CS80.

And:
G-Force's MiniMoosta, G-Media's Oddity and Oscar, The Korg Legacy Collection, Linplug's Saxlab, Novations VStation and Bass Station.

lol- hope that helps, or at least gives you some ideas

trilogy isnt a synth. its a rompler. huge difference since its basically sampled synths with some extra controls. i dont use it personally cause it makes u sound like everybody else and doesnt push u to learn how to make your own bass. you can just sample bass from your fav song and load it in, same principle almost. im kinda anti-trilogy to be honest but thats another discussion :)
but to each their own.

the best vsti is the "hit maker" vsti. u push a button and boom a hit comes out. it rules.
nah but seriously, the overall best weapon for me is Z3ta+ because it kicks ass at making anything. bass, pads, synths, stabs, you name it, it can do it and do it better than most synths. it just has so much punch and presence. deep as fuck lows and sharp highs. but its not the easiest to program. an easy but versatile synth thats easy as hell to learn is albino.

You are right about Trilogy, it is very over used. We mainly use hardware for basslines (our Moog Voyager or the Korg), but he asked about good VSTs.

Def give the Arturia line a whirl if you havent. Some pretty cool, good sounding synths.

for overall sound control and flexibility:

absynth

sampler:

kontakt(incredibly advanced, even allows you to automate midi functions via the writing of scripts)

out of the box, simple to use vsti:

z3ta+(patches available for it are amazing.)

Native Instruments rules. Kontakt I like a lot, I have Absynth but dont use it much. Still- the whole NI line is dope. I like Intakt a lot- sort of like Phatmatik but a lot better, its great for chopping up vocals and assigning them to keys to play on your MIDI keyboard.

I have not dug into Z3ta+, we have it but I havent played with it. Might do that this weekend.

arturia stuff is over-rated.

g-force stuff is good.

things that i paid for and use: korg legacy (analog and digital), fm8, battery 3, reaktor 5. i do not recommend reaktor 5 though--too complex.

cube is also great but rather expensive. kraftwerk use it.

also, if you buy cubase you get loads of vst and vsti. and it's yamaha so it should sound good. i hate cubase though.

The stock Cubase VSTs are pretty crappy sounding in my opinion. We never got any use out of them.

yea the only good program supplied plug ins are in logic...when I was using logic several years ago, I used the shit out of the es1 & 2.

Im with matt on enjoying hardware for a lot of sounds,

but here is my list of my fav software
-Atmosphere - Unbeleviable pads, and a lot of other sounds
-Absynth - great right out of the box, even better when you know how to tweek its hard ass interfaces
-Battery - use it for drums constantly
-Reaktor - unlimited uses...It may take you a few months to wrap your head around...and the Electronic Instruments add-ons fucking rule.
-Ultrafocus - awesome awesome awesome
-Trilogy - love it as a starting point for basslines (run it through lots of effects, and boom....new bassline
-Kontakt - the only soft sampler I use
-the Arturia stuff (cs80, minimoog [for those of us who cant afford the real one yet],arp2600, etc)
-camel soft cameleon 5000 - bad ass 4way blending...
-any Rob Papen stuff....

thats some of my favorite sounding softwarre stuff...

Out of curiosity sake, why do you hate Cubase?

I'm well versed in Pro Tools, SX3 & to a lesser extent, Abelton & have been picking up on Logic a lot as of late. SX3 and Logic seem to be the most powerful of the bunch but SX3 is FAR more intuitive & user friendly when in comparison to Logic.

As to the thread, my personal feelings seem to be pre-echoed by everyone else here. Invest in NI Komplete.

I like this one as well. Its fun morphing instruments into new sounds. Also the Super Camel Phat we use constantly.

We also have the NI Elertonik Instruments. Man those things are wild.

Im with you on Battery. Couldnt imagine making beats without it.

I only use cubase now...I was a logic user up untill 2004 (although it was the last version of Logic for PC.) but now I use cubase....Its audio editing is far superior to that of logic. I was just saying that logic has the bomb embedded plug-ins...they sound great, whereas cuebase's embedded plugins for the most part suck balls...especially their FX plug-ins. I do miss being able to sidechain effects just by pulling a drop down menu in the plugin shell...I still cant figure out how to duck my compressors in cubase via sidechaining...and I used to do it on almost every track I wrote in logic.

and yes, I couldn't agree more with investing in NI Komplete....

Seems we have the same taste in gear, both musical and firearms.

(I have the Glock 35 Practical/Tactical .40 that is as custom as it gets. Buried Bo-Mar sights, hand fit Barsto Barrel, Brass mag well with a custom nickel finish, custom Skate tape grips, .357 sig conversion barrel, as well as the standard mods like lighter trigger bar, polished interior parts, extended mag release, etc.)

Mine is setup for competition. It is the longer slide model from Glock with the extended barrel and sight line. The Bo-Mars are target sights. I also had a fully custom Glock 9mm that was for the nightstand with night sights and such but I gave it to Bioteknik cuz his sister gave me a rimjob and I felt bad.

Ill take some pics of my custom guns and send them to ya. Going to the range this sunday so Ill break out the camera.

Mainly I go to Blue Ridge out by Dulles (blueridgearsenal.com) but I am a member of the Isaac Walton league in MD (poolesville) and they have rifle ranges as well as shotgun and handgun.

Your right, the packaged vst's are lacking, but that's the case with ProTools too. I've never really paid attention to the stock unless that's all I have available at that time, and with a little bit of patientce I can still achive my goal. Anyway, I'm not sure what you mean by side chaining in Logic, but maybe you have not explored enough?

This may be old hat to you guys already, I really don't know.
In the far left tool bar, there is an icon for "inserts" with a dropdown to place all of your plugins. Also on the main bar under "devices" there is an option for VST Connections to patch via bus, and another helpful tool in there called VST instruments which brings up a floating window with all of instruments you currently have running, you can use it to turn them on and off and pop them back up when you need them.

Final rant: It's always a good idea to work in busses. Creat a bus for, lets say; all of your drums so they filter into a single channel. your vocals, your synths, whatever, So not only do you have control over each indivual sound, you also have them bundled. It really helps in managment and is especially helpfull in the final mix down stages, patching, eq'ing, compressing and mastering.
