Why does the back have to be so god damn fragile?? Seriously. I'm down for the count now and probably going to be missing another week (or two) in the gym due to an injury.

well this is the 2nd back injury i've had in the last 4-5 weeks. really pissing me off. the first one was a pulled trap muscle. this one is a strained muscle and a pinched nerve at the base of my spine. there's a shit ton of swelling and a little bit of bruising on the actual bone. ice = good tho. oh so good.

i'm using good form. just seems like the muscles are getting irritated despite that i warm up for 20 mins before every workout. oddly enough i feel like i'm actually stronger once i come back from an injury.... unless it's tendonitis

Do some Supermans!

I had a lot of back problems in High School, then I started wrestling. Strengthening my back solved most of my issues.

have you done anything to target that specific area while lifting? i do a full day for upper and lower back, and for the first month or so, concentrated on the lower back, which i always had problems with.

one of the many that helped me was the back extension, the one where you lock your feet in while leaning forward, with the bar around your waist. then you bend at the middle til your head just about touches the ground, then back up? that one is great, start out doing that one, slowly, and with no weight.

im at the point now where i do those twice a week and hold a 50 pound dumbell to my chest. those, plus deadlifts, squats, low rows, a ton of other things, have strengthened my lower back, my core, and my abs. all of which can help reduce and kill lower back pain

see that's just the thing... i'm so worried about over-fatiguing my back muscles too that i don't really do as many excercises. i know deadlifts are primarily a leg exercise but the movement works my lower back as well which is use strictly as my lowerback exercise for the entire week. maybe it would do me some good to add the lower back extensions or whatever they are called into my workout... again, i'm concerned with overkilling the muslces because i'm on my feet all day and often hunched over at work

yeah, i fully understand that, because thats how i started out. always having back problems, twice seriously had me layed out. but if you start out slow, light weight, and work your way up with good solid reps, you dont have much to worry about. there are a few machines that are for back extensions, and then, like me, you can just use a bench to bend over and come back.

the key is low low weight, lots of slow slow reps. you rush it you will get hurt, but on the same note, you dont work that area, you will just stay sore and more easioly hurt.

based on what has happened i think i'm going to give a break on using barbells for a bit and grade myself to dumbells. i feel like this is my best option so that i can use low enough weight but still do the exercises as well as keep away from the injuries that result from using a bar... im thinking 6-8 weeks on this program should help me get up to speed. i'm sick of setbacks though for real and i reaeaaaaally need to learn to be more patient.

it just sucks when you know you used to look one way and you'd give just about anything to have that back. i'm sure there's plenty of people on here that know the feeling.

well, as i am seeing, and as i have seen, it all takes time man, earning it the right way makes it all that more likely to stick around. if you dig what i mean. shit just takes time. take it slow or you are going to hurt yourself.

Try just laying on your belly with your legs and arms outstretched (like superman flying) then lift your legs and arms up at the same time about 6-8" off the ground, squeeze at the top, then back down.

no weight needed and its great for strengthening your back

Not always true. Genetic difficulties make some things nearly impossible.

We used to do a ton of them in track. Volleyball, too. I like them and still do them to try to balance out working my abs.

Actually I do feel that being tall makes shit a bit harder but unless I've been diagnosed with some problem that can only be used as an exuse for failure as opposed to a root cause.
