I was just looking at maybe adding some kind of dietary thing to my diet, just to kick start some weight loss. I know these aren't long term solutions by any stretch, but I was wondering if anyone has had success with this or if they have any other ideas?
I've always had really good success with Slim Fast. It's really hard for me to follow any sort of diet plan because there are a bunch of foods I don't eat. You get to eat a lot of food other than the shakes and they actually leave me feeling pretty full. Both times I've used Slim Fast I was able to lose about 30 lbs, and generally keep it off for 1-2 years before I start gaining again. And of course gaining it back is due to me having the worst diet on earth, and the activity level of a sloth.

yeah see I want to drop about 20, but I don't want to crash diet or do anything unhealthy. I haven't heard of anything bad about slimfast. After I lose the weight I want to continue working out and (trying) to eat as healthily as I can. I have always had a fairly healthy diet but the last few years I kinda gave myself permission to eat whatever I wanted and so it's been extra cream cheese on my bagels, whole milk, loads of butter w/ my lobster or crab legs. etc.
As long as you keep track of what you are eating other than Slim-Fast and make sure its balanced, it's fairly healthy. They used to be really high in sugar but a few years ago they changed all their formulas to have much less.

I like slim fast just because its so easy to have your meals on the go - a lot of times I wont have time to eat so ill just grab a shake at a 711 or something and drink it onmy way to work or something
the only thing that doesnt work so much with me is that I usually get hungry just a couple hours later - the formula is supposed to supress hunger for 4 hours or something
but yeah, give it a try, thats the only way how youll know how it effects you - good luck with the weight loss!

I just checked out the nutritional info on slimfast and its not anthing you couldnt achieve by making shakes/smoothies yourself.
I have 2 pitchers of smoothies/shakes in the fridge-one fruit based, and the other peanut butter and bananna based- both with whey protein and creatine.
Now our diet needs are definately not the same, but I imagine with a good multivitamin, some cheap whey powder, some skim milk, and fresh fruit you could get the same or more nutriets and vitamins you would find in Slim Fast for much cheaper. And it probably would taste a lot better.

definitely. i used to drink that stuff for breakfast when i was into long distance running. i'd throw in some protein power and i was good to go.
....now i can barely get myself to buy mcdonald's for breakfast :sadblue:

those shakes are pretty good. I like to add a few scoops of ice cream, some chocolate syrup, sprinkles, a little powdered sugar, and some Baileys Irish Cream. about 3 of those, and I'm good to go!
(for some reason I'm not loosing weight, though? :ponder:)

i did slim fast a few times back when i was younger and trying to get into running shape. they are good for quick meal replacements, but really they aren't much more then reinforced skim milk. if all you are looking to do is short term drop in weight, then go for it, but to be honest, as soon as you go back off slimfast, you put the weight back on.
its a very temporary solution, i found. what might be better for you, if you have some time, go get a whey or soy protien mix at GNC or somewhere, usually around 110 to 130 calories, 20 to 24 grams of protien. use skim milk with it which adds another 8 or so grams of protien, and you would be good to go.
Honestly I think it'd be more beneficial to anyone who wants to drop in weight to monitor the calories they are taking in. Slimfast helps you do this because they set you up with a plan that helps you control what you are taking in.
Honestly the same goes for someone trying to GAIN weight. I count my calories everytime I eat to make sure I'm loading in my 225g of protein and 300g of carbs.

Yeah, but a big help in dieting is being able to be out and just pick up something to go, or not stress about getting ingredients for home.
I'm a fan of slimfast. I never get tired of their chocolate shakes. It's not the best hunger control, even the cans that say so, but just snack on healthy things between meals / cans.

you like peeing out all that unused protein?

its not unused if you are in an active weight lifting program. you are actually supposed to be putting in, optimum levels mind you, 1.5 times your weight in grams of protien per day

I used to drink the old school slimfast shakes - I'm not crazy about the new formulas, but I wasn't drinking them to lose weight - I was drinking them because I had no appetite on my medicine when I first started it & I found drinking a shake easier to stomach than trying to eat solid foods. I would notice that I would get hungry again in a couple hours - but I found that increasing my water intake helped with that
I currently drink the Boost shakes & think they have more flavor than Slimfast, but I have no idea how they compare for those trying to lose weight.

1.5g x 150 lbs. = 225. it's crazy, i know... and as far as i'm concerned it's not easy meeting that mark. but it's essential in getting anywhere... and i'm definitely lifting daily but i think i realistically only hit about 200g of protein.

I take in 200-260 grams of protein a day- and lift every day now.

I drink a slim fast or two a day.. simply for convenience. I'm usually on the run in the morning, I don't have time for breakfast, so I drink one during my drive into work. Two times a week I have class and they typically only give us one or two 10 minute breaks during a three to four hour session.. I'll down a slim fast on one of the breaks. They serve their purpose for me.. quick vitamins, minerals, and protein.
I think they are a good idea for people that have trouble with their diet. Part of the problem with some people that are overweight, is that not only are they eating the wrong foods, they aren't getting nutrients.. getting the nutrients.. whether it be from slimfast.. meal replacement.. etc, will help the dieting process in itself. Of course there's no substitute for managing what you eat and exercising regularly, but I think the slimfast can help.
If youre going to go the slimfast route.. definitely get the reduced sugar variety.

If that's the main benefit, why not drink something like Ensure?

Ensure is more expensive and has more sugar in it.

They make protein shakes for women that attend to our nutritional needs (possibly a little more) and are a lot more filling than Slim-fast shakes...and will probably cost less in the long run too. :byebye:

We're talking about you though haha
I was under the impression that 1 g/lb was plenty to build muscle considering .5g/kg is maintenance.
There have been several studies in medical journals that show that much more than that just goes down the drain.

Slimfast is really good...Its more like an laxative so much, I think thats why some people get hungry right afterwards, b/c you go to the bathroom right after you drink it, and your source of nutriention that you rely on is it in that drink....But it helped me alot...I am going to get on it after this baby is born, I need to lose some weight too...

yeah, thats my issue. 1.5 x 252 = 378 grams. thats a bit much, simply in amounts of foods and shakes i would have to take in. i am around 200 to 250 grams or so a day right now.

he he he :corny: but seriously i've always found that better food choices, exercise and water intake are great ways to lose weight and keep it off. oh, and multi-vitamins too. i never believed in the shakes b/c i never thought they'd fill me up or satisfy my hunger. but that's just me. good luck to you!

ive actually started a diet that includes a shake once a day.
breyers were 2 for 1 at the food lion by my house.
and actually, ive lost a little belly, but i think thats more activity then diet.
2rip, i admire your dedication, all that food has got to be expensive.

this is why i make my own. i use vanilla Isopure Protien shakes right now, 50 grams of protien per shake, 1 gram of fat, 215 calories. i make it with skim milk, in a blender, and usually add chunks of watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, or other fruits to it. or a tablesppon of a low fat peanut butter. those taste great (tony the tiger) and they are great for you. only takes a few seconds to make in the morning too

my former post was a joke but i think i might look into protien shakes as an alternative to the ever so absent breakfast and lunch i seem to ignore almost every day. the problem with me is i dont eat in the mornings then get hunger pangs around after lunch then i just give in and go buy crappy fast food to kill the hunger until dinner.

From what I have heard 1 g/lb is a good target for muscle building. So yeah- if I weigh 250 lbs then 200-260 is the right amount for me.
And more than that?? Jesus I think it is pretty fucking hard to just get 200 grams of protein in me a day, I cant imagine trying for 300+.

aren't boost and ensure for healthy (nutritious) "meal replacement" but not necessarily for losing weight? it was my understanding that boost was to help you gain weight...
i like slimfast, but i could never lose weight on them. it was just more of a way to get a healthy snack if i was skipping a meal.
when i was on the atkins diet, the atkins shakes are really good. and if you are generally doing a low carb diet, they are much more helpful in losing weight.
the only diet that has ever worked for me was atkins.

 Like I said - I don't use them for diet aid - my ADD medicine is an appetite suppresent, and if I want to "eat" anything during the day, I usually just go for a shake. They're easy for me to get down, make sure I get most of the nutrients I need & keep me going - I've never had to do any of them for the sake of losing weight.
