Calories Don't Count At Fast-Food Outlets

By JIM MURPHY
A DOW JONES NEWSWIRES COLUMN

NEW YORK -- The New York State Restaurant Association has gone to court to challenge a New York City ordinance that would mandate the posting of calorie counts right next to the listing of menu items in fast-food outlets.

The way the ordinance is written, it would apply only to fast-food outlets because it targets restaurants "with standard portion sizes, and which already disclose nutritional information voluntarily," the Associated Press reported. Owing to the court challenge, the effective date of the new ordinance has been moved to Oct. 1 from July 1.

The restaurant trade group is wasting its time fighting an ordinance that will be as effective in reining in fast-food pigouts as the death warnings on the side of a pack of cigarettes. There is nothing that can be put on the side of a pack of cigarettes, no matter how gruesome, that would keep nicotine addicts from procuring their fixes.

Placing "580 calories' beside the menu listing of a Greaseburger would not for a moment depress Greaseburger sales. Greaseburger eaters already know that Greaseburgers aren't tofu, and they don't care.

In response to the new ordinance, some fast-food chains, including Wendy's, White Castle and Quiznos, have already eliminated the nutritional information that they did provide, according to the Associated Press.

My favorite official-spokesperson response was: "Our customers are smart and we believe they're capable of making sound decisions for themselves and their families based on our choice and variety and the wealth of nutrition information that we are already providing in so many ways," McDonald's spokeswoman Lisa Howard told the AP.

Actually, smart fast-food customers could eat better and for a lot less money by dining at home.

This law should mandate that along with your total cost for fast food, you also receive a total calorie count and how long it will take for you to work off what you eat.

I'm having

hormone / antibiodic free range chicken salad with a bit of grass / grain fed organic chicken eggs mixed in with all natural mayo, on a whole grain organic wheat bread with organic spinach lettuce. mmmmm, tastes like dirt. I made the chicken using organic, unsalted butter with herbs and eggs boiled in water blessed by the fucking pope. or something.

I want some god damn Chicken McNuggets.

Also, I just IM'd this to Ben:

natashaamee: I just realized that when I made my chicken salad with egg
natashaamee: it's still really all chicken
natashaamee: adult chicken and baby chicken.
natashaamee: ew.

I'm saying there's no scientific evidence to support it... there is, however, a preponderance of evidence that points to the fact that staying at a consistent weight (almost any weight) is _MUCH_ more healthy than yo-yo'ing...

 I may be crazy I dunnofirst, thanks for killing any hope of a hard on that I might have had for the next week... second, what's widely viewed to be common sense is often flavored by common myth. we are raised to believe that fat is unhealthy, even though the scientific evidence to support the conjecture doesn't actually exist... this is an all too common occurrence and stretches well beyond the area of fitness. Granted, being 400lb has a variety of risks involved that will certainly impact good health and longevity, but being 40lb overweight? no one can really say for sure...

Of course I probably haven't had chipotle in like a year or so.. they're just too damn big. and as I've always said, I like Baja Fresh better, you can't beat it enchilado style (which adds 1100 calories to the burrito)

first, thanks for killing any hope of a hard on that I might have had for the next week... second, what's widely viewed to be common sense is often flavored by common myth. we are raised to believe that fat is unhealthy, even though the scientific evidence to support the conjecture doesn't actually exist... this is an all too common occurrence and stretches well beyond the area of fitness. Granted, being 400lb has a variety of risks involved that will certainly impact good health and longevity, but being 40lb overweight? no one can really say for sure...

Ah, now what you're saying makes more sense, lol. As in, the 40lb 'overweight' person by whatever national standard says they're overweight vs. the 'normal weight' person by the same standards who both don't exercise, etc., then yeah, probably not that much of a difference.

Obviously when exercise/diet are brought in, the person who does those vs. the person who doesn't is obviously going to be healthier and on a broad scale have a better chance of living longer barring freak accidents...but yeah, being 'overweight' has no bearing, there are professional strongmen who aren't lean, are 360lbs and look chubby, but they're in better cardiovascular shape, have stronger tendons/bones/ligaments/muscles, and are healthier than the same guy their height who's 'normal weight' with a six pack.

but you know insurance actuarial tables will only use calculated BMI and pre-suppose that someone 40lb underweight is more healthy than someone 40lb overweight when, clearly, there's no way that's true...

BMI is a fucking fallacy that seriously needs to die... it wasn't even created to measure body fat or level of fitness in the first place... I am morbidly obese based on the BMI thing and while I know I am somewhat overweight, I don't think I'm unhealthy...

I am solidly in the modbidly obese catagory... it makes me sad. Especially when two doctors at the office I attend have told me I'd be a perfect selection for Gastric Bypass Surgery.

I mean, damn. I know I'm a fatty, but I don't think I am at the level yet where I'd need to take such drastic action. I feel like the standards aren't realistic.

Plus my cholesteral levels are fine and my blood pressure is great. Meh.

It is fucking stupid, it helps nothing and measures nothing really. I was going to ask my doctor why the medical community keeps going with it, but then again my doctor told me deadlifts were bad for me and that squats stunted my growth. Right. My doctor, also, is fat and out of shape.

Plus my cholesteral levels are fine and my blood pressure is great. Meh.I think it's mostly because of the fact that it isn't actually a standard... When Adolphe Quetelet came up with BMI (in the 1850's, I might add) it was intended to be an instrument of social policy to combat starvation among the poor, not a way to determine who was statistically a fat ass and who wasn't... chin up, gerla...

yeah... that advice is for people that don't actually do enough working out to warrant the protein intake... for them, the unused proteins are shot thru the kidneys and can cause harm to them over time... I think the problem with people trying to apply maxims is that no singular aspect of the human body is universal. What works for some, won't work for others... the moral to the story is find your formula and regiment it...

Well I think there are medical studies out there that show you don't need nearly that much protein in order to build muscle.

One chicken breast has about 50g of protein, same with a pork chop..

only thing is remember to drink plenty of water, or you'll have a buildup of nitrogenous waste in your joints.

you can easily get 150-200 g of protein from a regular diet..

(recommended amounts for a 200lb man)

if you're getting a ton of protein (200-250+) and not exercising, it's a waste and turns into something non-awesome (can't remember what, there's some process though)

Bioteknik

nope, an average person only needs 100g of protein in a day..

I got the 150-200 amount from a body building article.

Phil posted a study a while back in some vegetarian thread that was discussing how too much protein in your diet can leach the calcium away from your bones.

here's an interesting read on protein intake

ramz

but all forms of protein are not created equal though, so I would think it's tough to say that you should only have Xg of protein unless you equalize the sources...

Bioteknik
2007-06-22, 05:11 PM
I'm not saying you should only eat x amount.. it's just that it may not be necessary to supplement your protein intake when you eat a well-balanced diet.

EEK. about calories... i figured that a Panera sandwich would be better than a quarter pounder.... WRONG. it looks better, yes... and i figured the turkey, cheese, whatever would be healthier... but the calorie count is THROUGH THE ROOF! i think it's due to the bread... but oh my god... i was really surprised...

Mickey D's Chicken Bacon Ranch (without the ranch) is only 250 calories though... which is pretty damn good.

gotchas of eating out:

- white stuff (sugar, white bread, potatoes, mayo, pasta, white rice)
- oils
- ground beef

just remember that most restaurants aren't designed to serve niche health nuts; they are in business to make as much profit as possible which means using the cheapest ingredients they can legally obtain and pass on to you. That means most of the stuff you can get out is gonna be high in fat and fillers.

easy things like subbing a sandwich wrap for a normal sandwich can save you hundreds of calories.

Yeah, the panera thing may have kicked your ass calorie wise, but I'll bet you did okay fat-wise... also, you won't have that sickening feeling of having fried, fatty food in your gut for the next 6 hours... ugh...
