Can someone please tell me how to lose my extra weight that I have gained over the past year. I would like to tone up my body and hopefully get a flatter tummy, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm on the southbeach diet, and I jog .....any suggestions?
If anyone serious out there can help me, I would like to know the proper foods and fitness to do..
Thanks!!!
weight training! And, really, any variation on the Atkins formula that is dedicated to controlling carb intake is ridiculously laughable and must be avoided at all costs, especially if you are male. Males _NEED_ some carbohydrates to convert lipids to energy. Best advice is to monitor your caloric intake, fat intake, protein and limit your carbs to complex ones like whole wheats, etc. Almost anything white is bad for you (sugar, bleached flours, refined anything, pastas, white rice) with obvious exceptions like tofu and fish, etc. Pre-prepared meals should also be avoided like the plague.
Just jogging is an inefficient weight loss method as well as an unnecessarily time consuming one. If you can't get to the gym, so body weight exercises like push ups, sit ups, pull ups, dips, squats (lots of squats), lunges, etc. This will give you a more thorough workout. Intensity is far more important than quantity of your workout. You can get more benefit from 20 minutes of hard weight training than an hour of running @ 6MPH on a treadmill...
Anyone that's been following my training progress will be tired of hearing me beat this same drum again, but, seriously: www.crossfit.com

I prefer the binge and purge method myself.
All of the pretty people taste food twice.
(joooooking.)
If you're serious, you need to determine your goals as well as your 'food weaknesses'. Your personality type will show how you need to attack the whole situation. What's your lifestyle like? Diseases such a diabetes or other health factors? How did you put on the weight?
Etc. etc.
Weight loss isn't as simple as setting goals of eating right (which is easier said than done) and exercising.

P.S - as far as your food intake goes, you should NEVER start any form of ddiet that you can't see yourself keeping permanently. All diets fail eventually, lifestyle changes are what keep you healthy.
I suggest kicking the southbeach diet and start focusing in on a real structured overall diet that maintains health, not just weight loss.

not eating up to four hours before you go to bed is helpful as well, no matter what diet you are on, if you can stop the food at night it helps burn more before you sleep

http://www.myfooddiary.com is actually a site that helps you track your food intake, water consumption, exercise, etc. This way, when you eat that 4 million calorie cheese steak, you see visually how that will affect your progress before you see it visually on your belly. Also, you can see how much excercise you need to do to reverse the effects.

I disagree that the South Beach diet is as bad as Atkins. The SB diet is designed to re-train your body to want to eat only the proper amount, and good kind of carbs. Hence, the no carb part is only the first two weeks. Once you rid your body of the addiction to over processed starch's, it weens you back on whole grains, and healthy carbs. I did it for my wedding a couple years ago and lost over 20lbs. The only reason I put it back on was I stopped exercising and started eating REALLY bad. I never felt starved or unhealthy while I was doing it.

That is unless you're talking about some sort of diet with a short term goal right? I'm thinking about the detox diet you tried. I've still been throwing the idea of trying it back and forth in my head to use it as some sort of jumping off point with a healthier diet. Would you still recommend it?

Yeah I saw one of those books about it in the grocery store. I picked it up and flipped to the back and saw a couple of good recipes so I took it home (I had no freakin idea what alli was). I got home and started reading it and man...that's hilarious.
A terrible trick to play on someone would be to get them to take one of those pills and then feed them a really high fat dinner. The book pretty much says that if you keep your fat consumption below like 15 grams you'll be less likely to have the olean butt esplosions.

But that's the thing all these diet fads are just that, they will temporally have you lose the weight but eventually you put it back on. To maintain the weight you want you simply have to do an overhaul of your eating habits and choose the right foods daily.

 digestive system works 24-7. and if you can get into the habit of eating tough to process junk before you go to sleep (celery, other high fiber stuff, etc.) , you'll give your digestive system a workout for the night that will actually allow you to burn fat as you sleep...

Wrong, I used to be a personal trainer, it's really simple. You take your weight, for instance I weigh 199lbs right now * 12 = 2,388 give or take a few calories is my daily intake.
To lose weight at a healthy pace, e.g 1 to 2 pounds a week, I need to burn about 4,000 calories, so that means my daily intake needs to become 1,816 calories. While it's better to eat most of the carbs you'll take in during the beginning of the day for energy, it doesn't matter if you eat a good portion of those calories at night. Your metabolism will burn them regardless or store the ones not needed away.
So if I eat 1816 today and continue to do that I will lose a pound in 7 days regardless if I ate most of those at night.
Oh and the only thing that goes into hiberation is you at night lol.

eating earlier in the day and avoiding late night snacking is helpful in your weight loss goal because it keeps your eating on a schedule and avoid anytime snacking, especially later at night when to tend eat food higher in sugar and fats because being tired can actually cause your body to crave those types of foods

yes, it boosts your metabolism. everything likes a schedule, kids, pets, your body, we all work better with one. regular exercise and eating schedule trains your body. if you eat 3 large meals a day, you are giving body huge chunks of calories to burn but if you eat small meals you are helping your body to burn calories at a more steady pace

The exact time between meals is actually a huge debate. The whole question of cortisol comes up and a lot of people theorize that you have to eat every 4 hours to prevent cortisol from being over-produced.
And in general with this thread, there's always going to be differences since Health is a HUGE and widely changing science (with a hint of psychology mixed in). No one is every going to be 100% right due to the fact that new things are always being discovered just when we think we understand the human body and the fact that people differ so much that everyone has very different diet and exercise needs.

everyone has to find what works or them.
it's like eggs...first they are good for you, then they are bad, then are good, then they are bad
every body is so unique, it is up to the individual to find their ideal exercise and meal routine

This is what I do to personally stay on track. I know I work every day and my job has restrurants, ice cream shops right in it. I wake up early enough to have a full breakfast (this can be done if you just go to bed on time).
I have a healthy breakfast, usually consisting of oatmeal, an omelet using egg whites, low fat cheese and lean turkey, glass of OJ. I pack my lunches at night which are usually dinner I cooked. I make dinner for 2 (to eat that night and to pack away for the next day) that way I am not tempted to spend money during lunch and eat out which can rack on the calories.
I have two snacks in between big meals, when I grocery shop I do it by meals, breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks. I substitute bad things for the good, brown rice for white, yoguart and fruit bars instead of ice cream etc. No soda, water, gatorade, tea and coffee with splenda no sugar.
little things like this add up to weight loss and maintaining it for myself, may not work for you.

Yep, here's a short list of my substitutes:
Butter used to cook with - pam or smart choice
Sugar - splenda
White rice - brown rice
Sweet cravings - yoguart, fruit bars, blueberries, strawberries, or and a lot of people don't think about this, brush your teeth! If you are craving sweets brush your teeth, the change in the taste inside your mouth will help quiet that craving.
meats - chicken breast, fish, shrimp, steak - not filet mignon = fattening
Veggies - steamed
whole wheat bread
lean lunch meats, turkey mostly
hamburger = ground turkey
Soda = water, gatorade, tea, coffee
chips = tortillas with salsa

you shouldnt have to follow anything with a trademarked name.
Just drink lots of water, switch up your cardio every once in a while so you don't plateau, consume lots of fruits and veggies and dont inhale a lot of carbs (fruit, rice, sugar (esp), breads and potatoes) and you should be golden.
refined sugar is evil.
Allow yourself to 'cheat' occasionally so you dont crave the bad things and gorge on them. like pop tarts and cheeseburger quesadillas n shit.

That's the thing, you NEED carbs lol , especially men. I think a lot of people would be better off if they took a really GOOD look at their grocery list, then said ok, this this and this isn't healthy, so what is a good substitute that doesn't taste like cardboard but is healthy for me.

I'm a little suprised that this hasn't come up yet... How much & how often do you jog? You may not be getting enough exercise to make a difference and just increasing the intensity a little could do the trick - but that depends on what you define as "jog" how often you go and how long/far you go each time. (ie - I know people who consider a moderate walk as "jogging")

As suggest numerous times before in this forum, intake less calories than you burn. To find out how, calculate your BMR - http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/
From there, calculate your daily caloric needs:
http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/
Then divide that number by how many meals you eat per day (should be 5 to 6) and go!
And remember to eat clean, healthy foods. I also suggest at least a 40%/30%/30% mix of Protein/Carbohydrates/Fats respectively.
Protein is very important in your first meal of the day (although I'm guilty of violating that one), and Post workout (some say pre-workout as well).

Some people need a diet to get started, as something to follow or for food ideas besides what they usually eat that got them into trouble in the first place.
"Some People" being the key part. But for the general public, it's just a distraction from what really needs to be done.
Women are at a higher risk of failing in maintaining health goals because we're more likely to go 100% from the beginning when it should be more of a transition in our lives. Think about it, how many women to you know that say "omg, I'm starting my diet tomorrow" and go from eating like crap to eating a tiny breakfast, salad and piece of chicken all day long? Destined to fail. Now if you slowly transition into something by replacing the crap slowly with healthly food, why bother with taking the stop of a diet that is eventually going to be ending one way or another?
It's the equivalent of going from being a couch potato to running a 20k marathon overnight. It's just not going to work out, you're either quit because it's too much or you will physically not be able to cope.

clean food = complex carbohydrates (no refined shit, white bread, etc), whole grains, skip sugars, skip alcohol, skip hydrogenated oils, skip fructrose syrups, etc.
BTW - Trader Joes has some FREAKING AWESOME Meats/Poultry/Fish that come in individual servings ready for the oven. Last weekend I bought several things:
Chicken Breast w/ cranberry almond stuffing - 350cal per serving
Chicken Cordon Bleu chicken breast - ~300 cal
Pacific Flounder w/ Crab Meat stuffing (it was just so-so) - 310cal
Stuffed Salmon Belle Mer (fucking awesome!!!) - 340cal
AND most of the stuff is made from unprocessed foods, is low in sodium other random chemicals...shit is damn tasty too.

Listen to this man.
I used to buy into the really common belief that high weight circuit work would lead to big bulky man muscles on me, so I always did high rep/low weight work. Since I switched my sets up, I've seen MUCH more from my workouts.

As in, if there are 3 servings of gatoraide in each bottle you'd have to multiply those numbers by 3 if you had a whole serving. Is a bottle of mountaindew one serving or 3?

I don't do diets anymore. All they make me want to do is eat what I'm telling myself I shouldn't be eating. And I eat relatively healthy to begin with.
I've just been cutting all my meals in half, except for dinner. Smaller dinners just make me feel like I'm starving in the morning, and I'll eat more at breakfast.
Breakfast is like half a bagel and some fruit.
Snacks lately have been bagel chips and hummus.
Lunch is like soup or some pasta.. sometimes a sandwich.
Dinner is usually some sort of meat with veggies, and probably something like rice.
I always weigh myself after a night of lots of activity [like going to a club or something], because I pretty much have little to no water weight.. because I tend to forget to drink water, etc., and dance just about the entire night. I weigh myself first thing in the morning, and I know what my actual weight is.. as opposed to weighing myself throughout the week, and getting pissed because I'm seeing my weight plus the water weight I'm carrying around.
Weight loss has been lacking lately tho. With all the traveling I've been doing this month, all I've had time to focus on is cleaning our place, getting all plans finalized, and then getting in the car and driving.
Next month I'll get back on track with going to the gym and riding again. June's been mad crazy for me.

per SERVING
170 is one can, and one small bottle of gatorade has 2.5 servings in it, so it's more like 100 calories if you matched them up.
so yeah, they are both shite.

There are plenty of healthy places you can stop that take just as much time - subway for example, and they even have more healthy sides. And fast food places nowadays have healthy options on the menu so that they don't lose the entire health conscious community from walking in, assuming of course that you have the willpower to see the crappy food and still choose healthy.
Not a valid reason for being unhealthy. :nono:

Well it was 2 years ago and still has grains as the largest group, but considering that the guy created the diet in the 80's I believe, it is a good comparison. He thought up the diet through lots of research on how certain food raises blood sugar because the USDA reccomendations of a high carb/low fat diet just weren't working for people in the long term.
white bread raises your blood sugar just as fast, if not faster than a candy bar.

Increase the amount of meals you eat. If you eat 6 meals a day, trust me, you wont ever be hungry. The key is to never get that hungry feeling, but never get a full feeling either. Calculate your BMR/daily caloric needs, subtract 500 (if trying to lose weight), and divide by how many meals per day (5 or 6). If you eat those many calories every 3 hours 6 times a day, you will never feel hungry or full.

Plan ahead... there's no excuse to eat fast food ;-)
When I'm on the go, and I don't have time to make myself a meal, that's when I typically just have a protein shake.
This is by far the best protein shake I've ever had, and it's affordable. 10 lbs for $55 or something from Optimum Nutrition:
http://www.supplementcentral.com/products/optimum_nutrition/optimum_nutrition_100_whey_protein_gold_standard_10lb_bag
When you first start it, a real good mixture is 8oz of Milk to two scoops of protein mix. The milk has protein too so that adds up to about 56g of protein and ~ 350 calories.
As I've gotten used to it, and I've tried to cut milk from the diet, I do 8 oz of water & 3 scoops of protein mix which totals 72g of protein and 360 calories.

Honestly, for guys 3600 isn't that high. My training partner for instance takes in about ~5100cals a day and it still takes him a while to grow. Another guy I've trained with takes in around 3500 to lose weight/lean down before competitions. Other friends I have only need 2300 to gain weight. Everyone's maintenance level varies.
I'm not big, I'm 5'10"ish and 190, but as far as my maintenance caloric intake goes, I maintain weight at around 3200 calories a day. I can get away with lots of carbs because I'm very active (road biking + farmers walks weekly) and I basically bumped up the maintenance level to slowly try and bulk. I'm also still young and can get away with the high carbs too, just because my body is as active as it'll ever get.
Man do I miss buffalo wings :(
Damn that's a lot of calories! You must be huge. Right now I'm doing 1800-2400 per day. Are you bulking?
I was 5'10" 140 a year ago so I've definitely made some progress, but in my head I'm still a skinny punk brat. So nah, I don't think I'm huge at all. I could post a progress pic or two but I'd need to track em down (at work now). I wish I could take in 2400 a day and grow, eating all the time like this gets rough certain days :raven:
Not if he's super active and used to eat a LOT more than that. I think.
Yeah, last summer I ate about 4500 a day, lots of junk too...did the trick for gaining weight but I got a bit chubby, had to stop around 180 and diet down to 170 for several months until I started dieting the right way again to slowly put on LBM.

I forgot to add that the reason I posted that diet up as an example is that the threadstarter said they wanted to flatten their tummy, etc...losing weight won't necessarily do that, but reducing bodyfat will, and the way to do that is via a clean diet. The diet is also a good example of foods to take in...you could cut it in half or remove the things like PB and whey shakes and it'd easily reduce to a 2000/day diet

when using www.peapod.com, not only does it just kick ass because you don't have to go to the grocery store, it helps you from impulse buying because you take the time to create your grocery list without the temptation of food around you.
Plus, with that said list you can count the calories for meals, etc and know exactly what you are eating. /free tip

NEVER go to the market hungry.
omg. some of the weird ass food combos you end up with...lol.
I did it once a while ago and came home with likw tofu, huge jar of deli pickles, chocolate milk and popsicles. Then had the worst time figuring out what to make for dinner.

just got two of those last night, two ten pound hard balls like that to add to my collection of medicine balls. those things, the hard rubber ones, i got two so i could do pushups on them, and for one arm throws. best thing you can do, those pushups, works the hell out of your stabalizer muscles as the balls are trying to roll every which way while you do your pushups, and you go down between them

Holy crap they're expensive.
I really like the Nike ones though, the grip and textured surface is awesome.

neat link I found from harvard school of public health
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/fats.html
which is basically validating a large portion of the 'plan' called the south beach diet, only 20 years afterwards.

That basically is considering your body uses just about that amount to have your organs function :wtf:
