View Full Version : breaks in the northeast...

i got the quote from the bang/whistle thread. it just got me thinking about how little parties around you all, and north especially cater to breaks fans.
and i just want to vent some more.
and we want to see "The Return of Boo" this year for real, come on Local 13
why, so they can book the same damn house/techno/dnb/hardcore/trance lineup that every party north of dc does?
you know the thing that baffles me?
people move 3000 miles away to get decent breaks lineups, and it still doesnt show others that they should have just been booking decent breaks all along.
i know i personally would not have thought about moving if the mid/north east wasnt complete crap (for the most part, other than a select few) for breaks.
so yeah, get ready for your adam x, and your pleasurehead, and your icey, and your blah- blah-stuck-in-a-timewarp-rave-lineup-blah

I think you could also chalk it up to the backwardsness of the northeast rave scene. People seem rarely able to get excited about something new or unique or innovative or interesting; which is IMO where breaks leads the pack. There's no surprise to me that even where breaks are prominent here (DC, VA, and Bmore), the sound relies heavily on sounding like DNB or upon mimicking electro. I have nothing against these influences, and often like a variety, but I think it shows that folks are stuck in those modes around here. There's no risk taking in bookings. There's no developing and exposing new artists. (with complete respect and exception of Essential Breaks and 5 Spot).

Everyone go to www.bijoubreaks.com, events section, and count how many breaks parties are happening this month in SF or LA or in between.
I mean, Freaky Chakra played two weeks ago. I used to love their shit, and have NEVER seen them around here. Legends. Atomic Hooligan at Mighty. Jnr Hacksaw and Phat Conductor in SF. June 1st was Bassnectar, Cut Chemist, Glitch Mob, An-tan-ae, and tons more. JEEBUS.
Now look at events over here. Northeast.
Icey, Feeland, um...that's about it.

shit, SF kills it for everything, from DnB to Techno as well. And random parties, street festivals, shit to get in to when you don't feel like drinking, shit loads of fun ass dive bars, etc...
and it's not that the scenes here are bigger, it's that they have variety...i STILL haven't seen the same headliner ONCE since i've been out here.

I agree Josh, but DC (can't speak for b-more) has a huge venue issue...club owners are not going to take a chance on a experimental or "new" sound for a breaks DJ when they are guaranteed money by booking the same shit month in and month out.
Trust me, I would love to book all the DJs Ian has mentioned but I have 350 person max venue and $2,000.00 booking limit so that pretty much negates 75% of bookings out there.
Plus, if I ever try to charge $10 for an event all the bamas out there will bitch and complain (sorry, /rant on bamas). I'd feel like a tard if I booked a Mass Transit for Meat Katie or whomever and we only had 80-90 people there.
For me personally, I would love to book James Lauer or Timothy Heit but a. most people have never heard of them b. I'm tired of losing money. [both are prog DJs, don't worry about it :)]

In fact, there's about 10 times more work available in the Bay area for what I do (event managment, brand promotion, concert prodution etc...) Looking on Craigslist is enlightening really. The list is long and diverse: Meyer sound, Swank audio, Classic party rentals...

My job actually has an office out in SF already, so at the very least I know it'll be pretty easy to transfer out there and still have a job!

No doubt that these are issues everywhere. 10 bucks is not alot if the production is good and the music kicks ass. I hate it when I have to pay alot and it's for nothing! ha. The key to this area is in finding venues that are NOT clubs. People flock in groves when there is an alternative to expensive bar tabs, asshole security, and early closing times.

Apparently Krystle may get worker's comp for her hands, so we'll have some extra money. She'll be able to quit her job and finish her degree, and then we'll be in moving mode once we have the money. I'd absolutely *love* to live in an area where booking 2nd and 3rd tier headliners is less of a gamble, there's a stronger viral market, and you don't have to be the one booking an act for them to come through. The graphic arts schools out in San Fran and Pasadena seem to be pretty awesome as well, so Krystle is gung ho about it. Ian, I may be hitting you up for guest lists sooner than you think.

out here there are bar tending services that have their own liquor license and can supply it for your event. I know they allow roaming licenses in DC, VA and MD, so there has to be services that allow it.
There are a shit ton of public and private use venues that aren't being utilized...in D.C., all anyone is looking at is the clubs that are opening and catering to a dance music crowd and i damn well know there are other places to hold shit.
One other thing i noticed out here is that promoters hit the college campuses hard, they also hit downtown spots during the day, night clubs that don't cater to their music and the like...they don't waste time promoting to people who already know what the fuck is up :)

I was/am a Network Engineer and unless I wanted to work in San Jose at Cisco or pretend that I was from India or Pakistan - I wasn't getting a job that paid well.
