Heh, motivation's gotta come from within, I don't know. Certainly the more you keep progressing, the more enthusiastic you're going to be about training. I used to be tiny, out of shape, and get my ass kicked. I changed that.

Gyms are not as bad as you describe, and regardless when you go to the gym you shouldn't be focusing on what other people are doing or how they look. Just check the ego at the door, come in with enthusiasm and some headphones to tune everything else out and go at it 110%. You obviously say you want to look better...no easy way to get there. All that ab shocking tv-infomercial ab chair/ball 5 minute abs blah blah shit won't do it, exercising hard and cleaning up your diet will.

In the end you gotta decide whether you want to make something out of it and maybe be a little tougher on yourself. Or just ignore it and join the New Years resolution crowd that shows up in the gym every January and clears out by March.

I don't mean to come across as harsh with the response, but it's hard to pat someone on the back when they want to really start working hard at fitness...just find some enjoyment in it and go at it! I promise the more you start seeing results the more you'll be hooked :) Get yourself set up with a good routine, find a buddy to go to the gym with, and clean up the diet...things will start changing.

Change your scenery. I used to hate running now that I live by the beach, it's become one of my favorite activities. Workout around your house. Be disciplined and remember that it takes 3 weeks to start or stop a habit. Don't g et discouraged when you don't see immediate results. Be disciplined. Try full body workout activities, such as kick boxing and martial arts. And don't be such a prick when you don't get what you want.

i put in the earphones, turn them whayyy the hell up and think about sex. It gets me through most workouts. :D

ps if you see me at the gym....just walk away.
:D

Thank god I have a boyfriend [that can keep up with me], because I HATE working out. Never plan on making it a habit either, because sex is a big key in keeping relationships healthy. I just need someone that will agree to "work out" with me for the rest of my life. *pokes Charlie*

Edit: How the hell did this post end up placed before the one I quoted? Fix the effing clock!

Remember there's no quick fix for fitness. Go often and get yourself in a groove/routine. If you don't like feeling like a hamster in a cage, find some sort of activity that will make working out more fun.

It's kind of a hard question to answer since we all have different ways to cope with the gym. The gym by my house btw, is usually pretty clean, doesn't smell too bad (well except for the locker room), and has plenty of scenery to enjoy.

First of all, change your attitude. If you feel like it's going to be a chore, then you won't want to go and won't enjoy what your doing.

Second of all, try different things. For example, if you don't like the stationary bike, try the elliptical, etc.

Also, trying working out with a friend. Or with an ipod. Whatever motivates you more.

also, you don't have to work out in a gym...get your ass outside, run along the waterfront and hit on girls that are jogging slowly. That was one of my favorite things to do in high school.

also, working out IS work...hard work. no simple or easy thing about it, just try and make it fun...like doing parkour, joining a sports league(kickball don't count) or take up something that will let you beat on people like mma or boxing.

just do it. :shrug:/:elad: nothing fancy, just make yourself go. one of the better ways to keep yourself at it is to set timed goals for yourself (weight, body fat %, etc.) and track them. variation of your workout routine is really helpful. I know I keep evangelizing this, but crossfit.com has been the singular greatest thing I've ever used for working out. Hard workouts so you feel like you're doing something that are changed up every day... Love it. Nothing makes the gym more boring than 30+ minutes of "training" on a fucking eliptical trainer, which is what I used to do... Do short, high intensity workouts that kick your ass... fuck a bunch of machines...

i hate gyms.... but there's a ton of cheap/free ways to workout, and have fun doing it.

- mountain biking
- hiking
- canoe/kayaking
- pushup/situp type exercises (good because they only take about 10 minutes, i've made it part of my morning routine)

just keep going - stay off the scale, the scale is only going to make you mad - muscle weights more then fat, so your either going to gain "weight" or just not loose any...just leave the scale alone for a while and just watch your body change - its fuckin amazing to watch what happens when you just KEEP GOING. never ask yourself if you feel like working out, just go do it. dont think - just do. it takes a while to get in to it, but if you keep going, ur going to want to go, your gonna be upset when you cant, and its just gonna make u feel so much better :) good luck!

You start the thread after 10 pm on a Saturday, when the board is pretty much dead, then get pissy when people don't respond? I know a lot of people just use the "New Posts" button & wouldn't see this thread...

Like other people have said - adjust your attitude, find a friend to go with (make a competition out of it - who ever stops going first or misses a day has to buy the other one dinner/beer/whatever), set goals (esp if there is something coming up that you want to get into shape for) and after a month or two, it's habit and won't seem like such a chore. It's just getting through the first couple of weeks.

I used to go after work with a friend and we'd spend 45 minutes on the treadmill or eliptical gossiping & chit-chatting - the time FLEW by. If I wasn't meeting up with her, I'd just use my MP3 player w/ a long mix on it & lose track of time.

going to the gym really helps me center myself. i have found it life saving recently, as it has helped me get out aggression/pain rather than finding guidance at the bottom of a 12pack.

i can do cardio all day long, its just the weight machines that kill me. i have no upper body strength at all, and its everything i have to push through reps. i do feel 100x better once i leave the gym, and since ive been going, ive started to see results which has helped my motivation a ton.

I like working out. Freaking awesome stress reliever.

Maybe you need to look at what you're doing during your workout. My favorite thing in the world is going at it with a sparring bag. If you're relying on a treadmill or elliptical to get you through it and have it be enjoyable? You're screwed. I only use those to warm up and get the blood pumping. Like everyone else has said, look beyond the gym for a workout. And find the right soundtrack - ska and punk works best for me.

when I'm working out, the last thing I notice is what the soundtrack is... heh... I might notice whatever crap they have on in the gym when I'm switching from exercise to exercise, but, honestly, I'm entirely too busy being crushed by workout to pay attention to that sort of thing most of the time... :shrug:/:elad:

I work out 5 days a week and I'm not in a standard gym for any of them. Everything I do is centered around activities that I enjoy: rock climbing and parkour.

Also, once you get in the routine, you get addicted to the adrenaline and increased heart rate from the excersize, it really is like a drug and you start to look forward to it.

I enjoy the great feeling I get when I'm leaving the gym, I feel great. Do it. In fact, I'd have to say the journey I'm taking towards reaching my goals is one of my greatest hobbies right now. The results are very gradual, which is what kills people and gets them to quit. But all it takes is consistency, hardwork, and dedication. It's no easy task, but I feel I'm up to it. So far, I've been very consistent.

P.S. Diet is everything. You can hit the gym hard everyday for years, but unless you are eating right, you are not going to get the results you want.

the thing about the diet - SO RIGHT. its really not all the hard to eat right, its just dedication - you can do anything you put your mind to, but you gotta do it, just like working out. splerge every now and then, but try to keep it to a minimum. Light beer, diet soda if you cant give up soda all together, milk is big, VITAMINS - take ur freeking suppliments. if your insides are not healthy your outsides are gonna reflect it. and if your insides feel good - then usually youll be more about going to work out, rest is just as essential. I gotta fortune cookie once that said knowledge to the mind is as essential to food to the body. made me think a bit.

my greatest fear is that I'll injure myself and be forced to take time off... any interruption in my routine is certain to derail it... I've been freaking out the last couple of days because my lumbar muscles have been really sore after a routine that involved lots of heavy reps of dead lifts... thankfully, soreness is all it seems to be... my back has been my personal kryptonite in the past and I don't wanna screw it up again... :chilly:

Well if you read my Oh Noes thread... I hurt my shoulder/back/trap area last week. This week, I got through back and shoulder no problem! It must have been a mild strain but damn did it hurt. I popped something really bad in my trap 2 weeks ago, and last week, reinjured it. I went to the doc, got some anti inflammatory meds, a muscle relaxer, and I'm as good as new. If it were any worse, I was already pencilled in for 3 days of physical therapy but I felt so good that I cancelled it this week. Anyways, the best thing to do if you know your back is weak is to lower the weight and just do higher reps, and really really really concentrate on form. Form is everything. And stretching. - which is how I most likely injured myself. I had a ton of energy, was feeling great, and did some dumbbell shrugs w/ 85s in each hand. In a burst of andrenaline, I shrugged my shoulders up really high and felt something go. It wasn't bad at first but by the time I got home I couldn't move my right arm into certain positions.

i used to work out to build muscle and to lose as much weight as possible, and i had fun watching my body grow, but the most fun i had was the other day when all i did was walk arround the outdoor track for 30 minutes with my wife. it was nice to see nature, have good convorsation with the woman of my dreams, and i didn't stress about how much body fat i was losing. but i was losing weight. walking is great exercise. and it helps my spiritual health, too, to enjoy myself when i do it. my wife made it actually fun, and that is most important. work out with someone you care about. that'll make it fun no matter what you do.
