Damnit... last week, I did what many of us dread -- Pulled a muscle. Hopefully, that's all I did, and didn't tear anything. I was doing overhead tricep extensions when I felt something go in my back/right shoulder area. It hurt like a motherfucker, and it even made driving home a challenge (damn stick shift). Then miraculously, it felt fine by Sunday.
Well, yesterday I was in the gym, my back/shoulder felt 100%, and it was back day. I got through barbell rows, lever rows, and dumbell rows no problem. The last exercise we did was dumbell shrugs. I got through two sets, but on the third -- I was feeling great, had upped the weight, and definitely shrugged too hard. I felt something weird in my shoulder, but I had no immediate pain. I was fine driving home...and then a few hours later, all hell broke loose. My right trap/shoulder area is fucked. Luckily, while scavenging through the ol' medicine cabinet, I found some Vicodin that was prescribed quite some time ago. It expired in 2005, but what the hell. I took two of those, and felt a little better. A few hours later, I could still feel the pain, so I started wondering whether the vicodin went bad and was ineffective. I slept through the night, and when I woke up... was in terrible pain. That's when I realized that the vicodin was probably okay, but the pain was just too great. I think I'm going to go see a doctor today so I can get prescribed something and get her opinion. But in the meantime, I'm viked up again ;-)
I just hope I'm painfree by Friday for Vegas.

BTW - I also used a heating pad, a few hot showers, and a kickass massage last night... all felt good while in use, but didn't do anything to get rid of the pain permanently. It's just a matter of time I suppose for this thing to heal up.

I pulled my trapazoid (sp?) last weekend, it was so bad that I couldn't get up out of bed literally in agonzing pain. I had my girlfriend pull me out of bed and rushed me to the ER.
They gave me flexeril and perocets. I feel a lot better but that was no joke.

i have been dealing with lingering shoulder pain in my right shoulder, and it was an odd kind of pain, kind of internal, non muscular. actually a little scared at first that it might have been a pinched nerve, since i did it doing overhead shoulder presses with 70 pound dumbells (almost cracked my skull with one)
took the last two weeks off from all shoulder push lifts (arnolds, presses, etc) and even had to cut out the incline bench on chest days.
after more research into things, it seems mostly to be rotator cuff issue. being on the No Stack, i have been going up in strength fairly quickly, but sometimes the joints, etc, still need slower growth. i also found a massive amount of light weight lifts i can do to target and strengthen the rotator cuff.
but lastly, and my main point, for the pain, and it got bad, like it would wake me up if i rolled over in bed wrong, take motrin. and icy hot should be your new best friend. they have the 8 hour time release strips that dont stink to high hell. just put one on in the morning, and good to go all day
Heating pads aren't the way to go for muscular things. Use ice instead. It numbs everything and reduces the swelling for longer benefits. Heat will give you a quick fix, but then the pain will come right back.

Icey hot stuntaz????
Matt - if you fucked up the rotator cuff, you really need to look at surgery. Anyways, I have an appointment with an orthopedist in 2 hours. Hopefully they'll find out whats wrong and prescribe me some non-expired pain killers... heh.

nah, nothing fucked up, just a strain. once i eased off any upper push lifts, the pain stopped, and i can now start again, with much much light weights, to strengthen the rotator

Ok, I'm just speaking from experience. My dad tore his rotator cuff, ignored it for 2-3 years, taking it easy, etc... finally he saw an orthopedist, got an MRI, and realized it was torn to shreds. Surgery and lots of rehab later, he's okay. The best thing to do is to have an expert take a look at it.

yeah, basically, if after taking it easy, and doing alot of rotator cuff strengthener lifts, if i see no improvement in a bit, like a month or so, then i will end up getting it checked out.

Massage isn't good for a pulled muscle. They are normally already inflammed to a degree, and working it more, will slow the healing process and possibly make it worse.
Just a little FYI.

sorry to hear you pulled a muscle...esp the shoulder/trap area that has got to suck immensely.

Good info... at least it felt good in terms of pain management. I think I'll go the icey hot stuntaz route from here on out though.

Just got back from the doctor... looks like a muscle strain thank god. I got prescribed flexeril (muscle relaxant) and piroxicam (anti inflammatory), but no damn pain killers!!! :ripped:
Oh well, I still got some vicodin ;-)

Flexril will do wonders trust me  I had to take one at work though due to the pain yesterday and it was an uphill battle to stay awake. But they hosed you on the no pain killers, my doc hooked me up with the perocets.

It's better to take as little as you can, or nothing. You want to feel the strain so you know how quickly it's healing, and how much you should actually be moving it. Either that, or just be very ginger with it while you're on them.
Massage is a great prevenative for muscle strain. Especially if you do it regularly and go into detail about what kind of working out you do with your therapist.

just did shoulders today for the first time. only did one overhead press lift, and that was 3 sets of arnolds with light weights, and then alot of horizontal and vertical lifts. the shoulder actually felt really good today, so hopefully the rest and icy hot pads did the trick
in related news, my shoulder is feeling great lately... I have no idea how or why since I've essentially just gutted thru the pain of using it for several months now...

I do that with my back.. but I had to skip the gym today, because it was too sore. I did take the kids to the pool tho.
100 pull ups
100 push ups
100 sit ups
100 squats
did all that today and my shoulder feels awesome...

Well, the pain is starting to fade. No Vicodin today. I may actually hit the gym and do some very light bicep/tricep exercises, or I might puss out and just do a lot of cardio. Either way, the muscle relaxer last night must have helped, especially coupled with the anti inflammatory meds. Yay, hopefully I'm painfree for this funfilled weekend.

Man... I fucked up my back real bad Tuesday night. I fell off the bed, now my muscles are sore as hell. Sitting in front of a computer for 9 hours the next day was NOT fun. I went home in agony. I want to tear the muscles out of my lower back right now... Starscape this weekend could be something of a chore. Unless I make sure to get a buzz going before I've been standing/walking for too long. I think I might just have to do that... awesome! Valid excuse for drinking!
here's a good stretch that I recently discovered
Take a 20# barbell. the ones at my gym are exactly the right width to do this, but I have no idea what you have available to you. In any case, I put my hands as far out on the bar as I can, straighten my elbows and rotate my arms forward and above my head as far back as they will go... hold for 20-30 seconds, letting the weight do the work of increasing the stretch for you.
I also do "toe touches" with the bar bell, again, letting the weight do the stretching for me to stretch out my lumbar and thighs
I do both stretches regularly throughout my warm up (once per round) and sometimes between sets during my workout... Since I started doing them, I experience almost no soreness after workouts and my shoulder couldn't be better... HEAVENLY!

Sorry to hear man...yeah just rest it up, don't worry about taking a week off, don't get tempted to even lift light (I know it's fuckin tempting!), better to get some cardio and stretching work and let everything heal up. Look into ART if possible, that might help a ton. Vicodin/Percocet/Hydrocodone/etc all last a very long time past the exp. date if kept sealed in a bottle, the only thing that might happen over several years is that they'll lose some effectiveness.
The shoulder/trap area is a shitty place to pull a muscle, since it's used in some shape or form in most day to day activities :(

thanks for the info... starting to feel better already! I was thinking of doing some very light bicep/tricep lifts today -- any pain, and I head to the elliptical.

Yeah, I just emphasize to watch yourself since i pulled my lower back pretty badly about half a year ago, got too impatient after 5 days and went to do some super light squats...went down on 225, felt a snap, and bam out for 3 weeks :(
I really want to try ART at some point though, even if you're not injured it's supposed to do wonders.
