Froe, Gav and Merf make up the nu-skool breaks collective known as The Breakfastaz. They have been working together on a number of musical projects for several years and the wide ranging influences they collectively bring have helped to form their unique breakbeat sound.
With over 17 successful releases and remixes on respected breaks labels such as Passenger and Mob in little over 12 months, their offerings have received support and heavy rotation from scene stalwarts such as Plump DJs, The Freestylers, Tayo, Ali B, Meat Katie, Aquasky, Krafty Kuts, Deekline, Annie Mac and even Zane Lowe, highlighting the enormous impact they’ve had on the scene in such a short period of time.

- TOM FOOLERY
[ Catalytic Souls | ILLINOIS ]

TomFoolery is currently one of the most recognized breaks DJs in the Mid-West. Pushing the limits of the breaks sound and defying all notions of what breaks are is routine for this DJ. Coming from the hard and funky sounds of the dirty south into the deep progressive sounds of the Mid-West has left a unique imprint on TomFoolery's track selection and mixing style. TomFoolery's big room breaks have landed him in the heart of techno at Detroit's legendary DEMF afterparties, they have seen him follow up acts like Kaskade at New Orlean's Vampire Stripper Sluts and put him peak hour at Tampa's world renown Amphitheater.

Five is conveniently located in the heart of Washington D.C.'s nightlife. The club sits on the corner of 18th Street and Connecticut Avenue. The area is walking distance to D.C.s prime restaurants and shops. It is both safe and easily accessible with valet parking right in front of the venue.

Breakbeat (sometimes breakbeats or breaks) is a term used to describe a collection of sub-genres of electronic music, usually characterized by the use of a non-straightened 4/4 drum pattern (as opposed to the steady beat of house or trance). These rhythms may be characterised by their intensive use of syncopation and polyrhythms, which are prominent in all music of African origin, including African American music although the actual instruments used in breakbeat music makes it more closely related to techno and other forms of electronic music than African or African-American genres.

[edit] History
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, hip-hop DJs (starting with DJ Kool Herc) began using several breaks (the part of a funk or jazz song in which the music "breaks" to let the rhythm section play unaccompanied) in a row to use as the rhythmic basis for hip-hop songs. The Amen Break and The Funky Drummer are some of the most commonly-used breaks, which have appeared in many songs from many different genres.

In the early 1990s, acid house artists and producers started using breakbeat samples in their music to create breakbeat hardcore, also known as rave music. The hardcore scene then diverged into sub-genres like jungle and drum and bass, which generally had a darker sound and focused more on complex sampled drum patterns. A good example of this is Goldie's album 'Timeless'.

In recent times, the term breakbeat has become synonymous with the many genres of breaks music which have become popular within the global dance music scene, including big beat, nu skool breaks and progressive breaks. DJs from a variety of genres, including house and techno, work breaks tracks into their sets. This may occur because the tempo of breaks tracks (ranging from 115 to 150 beats per minute) means they can be readily mixed with these genres, whereas the comparatively fast speed of jungle and drum and bass (165-180 bpm) may have restricted the utility of these subgenres to DJs playing slower-tempo music.

Breakbeat (or funky breakbeat) may also refer to the music of bands such as Breakestra, who play funk and soul music with an emphasis on the elements that became popular in hip-hop and later breaks-based music. This sound is characterized by slower tempos (80-110 bpm) and organic, "human" rhythms. It is sometimes differentiated by the term "broken beat".

My thoughts on last night (although I'm paraphasing from another source):

In the beginning, when God created dance music,

dance music was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss, while a mighty wind swept over the turntables.

Then God said, "Let there be breakbeat," and there was breakbeat.

God saw how good the breakbeat was. God then separated breakbeat from all other dance music.

Also,

Light, of course,
Like a flicker in my left eye
Push, move,
Could be perfect if you walk by

I've got lots of pictures in my head,
You'd better not turn off the projector
And I've got lots of pictures in my head,
You'd better not save them all for later

[Chorus]
Maybe I, oh get me on fire,
Could take your picture, oh you could get one too
And maybe I, oh get me on fire!
But keep me on, don't switch me off ...

You can't fight,
Oh what we do what we
Can't do it solo,
But you've got what tickles for me

I've got lots of pictures in my head,
You'd better not turn off the projector
And I've got lots of pictures in my head,
You'd better not save them all for later

Maybe I, oh get me on fire,
Could take your picture, oh you could get one too
And maybe I, oh get me on fire,
But keep me on, don't switch me off ...

It was nice to meet you!

Did I hump your leg per chance? I was apparently in heat that night or something.

Awww man, I missed out on a chance at a random leg humping? Need to plan out my night better to get in on this kinda opportunity.

Just want to say thanks again to everyone that made it out on Friday, that was one of the best nights I've had at Club 5 in a long time and I was completely sober!

Music was banging from start to finish and the crowd was just right, packed but room to dance.

Good times for sure!

Five hates my liver. I'm going to name my first Liver transplant after the place.

I can't seem to go into that place and leave in the same condition...

I sang along... good times were had... last set, not so much... floor cleared in RECORD time...

no matter what time you try it, putting prog breaks on after something with as much energy as b-fastaz is a bad call... people would have probably just gone to the bar and waited for it to get better, but since there was no bar to go to, they just went home... I've definitely seen Five packed until 5AM more than once, so I wouldn't be soooo quick to blame it on the timeslot...

Really, all the breaks heads stuck it out. Those people leaving were mostly not there for breaks anyway. They all had gotten kicked out of the roof hip hop area, and were thrown into our little rave cave. Did we frighten them? Perhaps. Do we care at 4am? Not a bit.

Thank you Proxxy and the rest of the essential breaks crew for having me out last night, and hooking it up with a bomb set time! The crowd was really feeling it all and hollerin and jumpin. Damn I had a good time. That was my first time pulling out my serato system at a club, and it went very smoothly.

I recommend a lock on the dj booth! wow, there was like 20 people up there!

Proxxy/Lantern your set was BANGIN. We should tag sometime, for real. It would be mad crazy fun.

I recorded a couple minutes of video. I'll look into getting it up online tomorrow.

Inna>I got your pictures and some video! that email addy again was???

i think the fastaz played a little to hard to late for my taste and ran off the afterhours crowd... as far as five being packed at 5am... not very often , when it's not a holiday... maybe the dance floor pack but not the whole club... it ain't CLUB W i can tell you that.. haha I'm so pissed that i missed DI at FUR i didn't wake up until 12:30 am on sun morn from friday night/sat afternoon.

hardly...

I am and always have been, a rampant house head but I do appreciate other genre's and can't understand why other people sometimes seem unable to do the same.

I always laugh at statements like, " I listen to everything except..."
when the second part of their declaration takes longer to say than the first.

Besides, what kind of jerk ass screams about there not being any drum and bass when the event is call Essential Breaks ???

Another story...My crew and myself were trying to make it to the upstairs lounge area after while of some most excellent dancing. Well, needless to say that I got lost from all them b/c I just happened to get lost in the music again and just started dancing (And that hasn't happened to me a long while.) I would just like to say thanks once again to Randy and crew for bringing an awesome night of breaks to DC!!!

Does anyone buy those shooter shots they carry around on the trays? I feel for the waitresses that have to sell those things. My buddy said he saw a girl drop the tray on the dance floor, then someone was kicking the alcohol away and proceeded to slip and fall.. some others fell too. It said it was good comedy. :D

My friend tried one, she seemed to think it was pretty good. Was $5 if I remember correctly.

I used to all the time when Jessica was a shooter girl. But that was more out of pity for her having to do it then because I liked them.
