View Full Version : Bod-Mod Megathread (Q&A/Comments/Pics/Etc.)

The reason I started this thread was because I have a question. But then, I got to thinking....there are a lot of people on here who are into the tattooing, piercing, branding, and scarification forms of body modification. There are a few who are into suspension also.
I don't know of anyone on this board who is into subincision, uretral stretching, self-castration or anything else that is as hardcore as those things, but there may very well be some. In the city where I was born, the more hardcore modifications seem to be more prevalent for some reason.
Anyway, this thread is a centralized location for any questions, pictures, stories, videos, comments, or anything else related to any sort of body modification.
I have been piercing for a number of years, despite my differentlyabled-ness. (saved reference like whoa) I began when I was 18, and was apprenticed by my buddy Dustin for a year before that. The first piercing I ever did was an eyebrow. Anyway, I have pretty much perfected the art. I don't profess to know everything, but I do know a lot more than the average joe. I know the proper depths, angles, and placements. I also generally know where the veins are, as to cause as little bleeding as possible. Most of the time there is no bleeding at all. I will admit, I have fucked up 3 or 4 times over the past 7 years, but I was always able to fix them. The last time I fucked up, she was a bleeder, a heavy one. It literally made me dizzy and pretty much fucked my whole day up. I didn't charge her anything. The next day, after they were all cleaned up, they looked fine. The depth, angle, and placement were top-notch.
Now, my question. I have decided to get into tattooing also. I got a kit today with two guns, a bunch of needles, power supply, pedal, cord to connect the gun to the pedal, 8 vials of ink....everything I would need.
The question is.....what the hell is that transparent, onion skin type paper called? You know what I mean....when you bring in a custom design, they will trace the design onto the onion skin paper, put it on your skin, wet it, and then the design will be on the skin so that they can have an idea of what to do without going freehand. I have never even touched a gun before (but have spent extensive time in shops watching), so I am not even going to begin to try to do freehand now. Also, is it a special type of pen that they use on the paper to get it to transfer to the skin so seamlessly?
1. What the hell is that paper called, and where can I get some?
2. What kind of pen is it that they use on the paper to make the design transfer so seamlessly? Is it a dermal marker?
Any help in these areas would be appreciated.

Indeed. All I have right now are my ears.
My work is pretty chill. A lot of our guys have tattoos and stuff, so I know they wouldn't freak out if I walked into work with a full sleeve or something (not that I plan on getting a sleeve, just sayin). But I know other places aren't so laid back.
I've been toying with getting my septum done, since I could wear a retainer and flip it up in my nose while I'm at work. We'll see.

I have the conch in my left ear pierced. I want to get another one, but I'm not sure what. It'd have to be tasteful for work.
Just looking to get another piercing in my ear, I'm not too adventurous on the body-piercing front.

traguses (tragii?) ftw.
i've had mine for 10 years.
i love them
the ladies drool.
it is a very difficult piercing though...you need to have curved needles and receiving tubes. (which i do)
it's probably the most difficult piercing i've ever done, and some people's tragii arent even developed enough to do it.

My ears are stretched. I've sized down and bought plugs because I grew tired of the hanging lobe flesh. Seeing through my ear lobes started to gross me out.
I'd like an etching/scarification someday.

chicks with septums = hawt x 896578967854
i don't know why, its just something about it.
i mean, if it's a 450lb butch with one...no, not hawt.
but the average girl....a septum makes her attractiveness go up at least 25%, to me at least.

Me too. For the same reason, and I think a little pink ring would be cute. I've been a chicken for the past 6 weeks though and haven't done it.
I have:
Nape
2 4 gauge lobes
1 eyebrow
1 nostril
2 nipple (currently nothing in them, but I just need to order new jewelry. They're still open.)
Hood
Semi Retired:
2 conch
2 regular 2nd hold lobe
2 helix
Retired:
2 lip
tongue
I also play pierce & pull. Haven't gotten to suspension yet.
8 tattoo's.

Right now all I have is my lip pierced.. and ears [once].
I'm trying to get a tattoo appointment setup with a friend. He's just started tattooing, and they are allowing him to tattoo his friends for free for the next few weeks. He's also the guy who did my lip piercing.
I'm getting headphones done across the top of my back/just below my nape.

current piercings:
traguses (wear 14g, but can wear 10g, had them for 10 years. i've left them open for months.....i dont think they will ever close.)
septum (wear a 12g, 10g, 8g, and sometimes 6g if i'm feeling feisty.)
prince albert (8g most of the time, but was recently streatched to 2g.)
frenum (6g)
retired piercings:
anti-traguses
conch (left)
rook (left)
jacobs ladder
reverse jacobs ladder aka gator back
nipples
labret
tongue web
attempted uvula
bridge of my nose
left cheek
right nostril, for a very very short while
scrotal piercing
web between thumb and forefinger (right)
eyebrow
many of these have been done several times, due to loss of jewelry leading to closure. for example, i have had my prince albert done 4 times. but now i have at least 500 assorted sterilized rings, so i will never have that problem again.

now tattoo artists use a machine that is similar to a copy machine. to make the stencil
this is what i am speaking of....
my last tattoo was a custom design. the artist took some sort of semi-transparent paper, and placed it over the design. he then traced the outline of my design. i watched him do all of this, he then put it on my skin, sprayed it with mist from a water bottle, and patted it onto my skin. he removed the paper, and the design that he had just traced was on my skin. there was no machine, it was just him, that paper, and my design.
i'm just trying to figure out what kind of paper it was.

I only have my ears pierced. I used to have my nipples done...I've had my right one repierced 3 times and my left twice. They were done wrong the first time, I just got the right again for like 5 bucks by some apprentice (who fucked it all up of course) and then I got them both redone right on a whim. Then I decided that they were too much of a pain in the ass and I took them out.
And I'm sure everyone here has seen me post my fucked up rainbow brite tattoo.

monoxide you can probably buy the tranfer paper out of the same source you picked up the tatoo guns. as for a place to practice, I think most artists use themselves, thats why they are covered and often with less than awesome looking tattoo's.
forearms and legs are OK if you dont mind wearing longsleeves and pants in the dead of summer (like mentioned in the thread), you will basically keep yourself out of most of the professional realm in THIS lifetime. (although lots of professionals in this generation have extensive and great looking tattoo work, including some people in the FBI, state police, attorneys, etc) I think tattooing is on an up-trend which is great imo.

no doubt about it tattoos are totally fuckin awesome. I feel, however, that alot of people in OUR scene are scared off by them. obviously, not the people in this thread. What i find is that when househeads or (used to be that even some) dnb heads meet me, they dont know what to think. the vibe is somewhat liek 'aren't you in the wrong scene' or 'shouldn't you be at a punk rock show and not at a dance club' this does bother me slightly. I dont give a fuck about old women who get freaked out by me or whatevr. its when people in the EDM scene dissmiss me. But all of that shit is changing. Hooman is getting pretty tatt'd up himself.

Hey James, how do you sterilize your piercing equipment? I know they use autoclaves in shops but how would you do that at home?
There are these companies that specialize in autoclaving.
You send them a set of equipment, and they autoclave it in steri-bags, and return it to you.
It's fairly inexpensive, and the turnover is extremely quick.
I should just break down and buy an autoclave myself, but that's ALOT of money.
The set of tools I have has everything you could ever possibly need, with duplicates of the stuff. When piercing myself I will just use the duplicates, cause I am all that those tools touch. The needles I have are individually wrapped, and sterilized. Same with jewelry, except for my personal jewelry. If my personal jewelry gets nasty, I' just boil it and it comes out looking perfect. No crusties or anything. Boiling my personal jewelry also seems to bring back the shine and allure of the jewelry as well.

Cool to know. thanks man.

a vertical fourchette can be really stimulating for a partner.... and i definitly have enough skin there to do it. and it looks pretty IMO and my other metal down there is towards the front, so the bottom one would give balance... i have liked the ones i have seen on other girls (tho they have told me that wearing a thong becomes uncomfortable for a long time).... also, with my move to texas, i dont think i will be getting many lubbins in the near future, so it will have time to heal. :ponder:

hey Monoxide, maybe you can help me out with this since you've been a piercer for a while...I've had conch/tragus/nipples/nostril/septum/PA done, and all of them within 2-3 weeks have never, ever healed right besides the PA (which i've had 0 problems with). I know that the latter is essentially self-cleaning and sterilizing since everytime you take a leak, you're doing that, but for the rest...could i just have a reaction to surgical steel? I've tried every possible method for cleaning, everything i've read up on, and no matter what none of those aforementioned piercings ever healed right, and as a result I've had to take them all out except the PA.
Maybe I should give bioplast or another kind of metal a try? Maybe I just really, really suck at taking care of them? Maybe the piercer I went to (same shop for all of them) sucked? It's a real pain in the ass.
Those aside I have my stomach and chest covered in a Giger tattoo piece that is still in progress, and have my lower stomach tattooed as well. Once the Giger is done I'll move to working on a full sleeve for my right arm, probably in color, going to talk to a graphic designer friend of mine and start coming up with ideas/concepts/sketches for it. With normal clothes on now, you'd never knew I'd ever had a body mod, heh.

There are a ton of possibilities actually. The hypersensitivity of surgical steel could be ruled out, since your PA heals up fine. (i'm assuming that you have surgical steel in there)
It could be that you suck at taking care of them, or it actually could be that you're cleaning them too often. Yes, that's what i said. When I first pierce myself, until it heals up; i wash it twice a day with "softsoap" brand liquid soap. it has less abrasive chemicals than dial or safeguard. i dont think i've ever had a problem with infection, but i am a pretty clean person in general.
it may be that your piercer sucks, and really doesn't know what he is doing. The placements could be wrong. The instruments may not be as sterile as you think.
There are really at least a dozen things that could be going wrong here. I'm sorry, but I am unable to answer your question.

i'm sensitive/lightly allergic to surgical steel. if makes me swell red and get itchy. every piercing i had before i knew about it would constantly abscess. wearing earrings as a kid left my ears constantly red and itchy.
when in the hospital with an IV, I learned that i was allergic to steel. my arm swelled up. they then replaced it with a rubber one (like what they use in infants)and i was fine. thats when they tested me for the allergy. benadryl helps for short term contact with steel, but long term is not pleasant.
since then all of my jewlery has been titanium and i have had no problems....
gold jewlery works great too :kapluto:

yes, neppie gives good advice. titanium is more friendly, but more expensive as well.
the reason i did not give you the advice is because i don't think you have an allergy to surgical steel, if that is what is in your pa. is surgical steel what you have in your PA?
Neptune
2007-06-07, 01:14 PM
sometimes the type of skin / amount of exposure to the skin can make a difference.
since the PA goes thru the urethra the amount of contact it has with healing skin is smaller than the amount of exposure say an eyebrow ring would have. sometimes the problem will only occur during the healing process, and after it is healed, the allergy wont matter as much. i know in women genital piercings heal faster than others, so the shorter healing time in your PA lessened the problems with the allergy... that might make the difference.
i dont know that for sure, just an educated guess if what is in your PA is also steel.
this for sure i do know tho:
sometimes a different alloy can be used too, which will make the difference (amount of nickel in the mix can make a huge difference to how much of a reaction i can have)
sometimes a austenitic steel is used and other times martensitic steel is used, and they both can be labeled as surgical steel, but cause different reactions in people sensitive to steel.
all that being said, have you always had the same piece of jewlery in your PA? changing the jewelry and gauging the reaction in your skin could let you know about the quality of steel in your jewlery.
getting testing for allergies to steel is very easy to do, and recommended IMO if your having the problems you mentioned.
also. because tattooing needles are steel, its recommended to take benadryl if you go in for a tattoo, during the process and for a few days after, to make sure it heals properly without infection, since that is also common in people who get tattoos with steel allergies.

I miss my eyebrow ring. I took that out to be all 'professional'. Used to have my tongue pierced but I took that out (i miss it). I have my nose pierced which doesn't seem to be a problem b/c I use the stud.

Wow, tons of great advice, thanks guys. Yeah the PA was originally done with a 10ga CBR that was surgical steel, but after 2 months I switched it for an 8ga Titanium CBB. It was still tender while having sex when the 10ga SS was in, i think partly because it hadn't fully healed internally, partly because sex puts a lot of strain on it, and partly because the ring diameter was too small (i got a much larger diameter on the 8ga CBB).
The way Neptune described very mild reactions to steel is EXACTLY how my piercings have reacted above the belt. I hadn't heard about the Benadryll idea before, that sounds good, and I've seen H20cean as well, sounds like it's a solid investment.
Unfortunately I'm working at a law firm this spring/summer so no visible piercings till next semester, I had the septum for a month or so before i took it out while i worked here but only because I could flip it up and keep it hidden.
Anyone ever done play piercing? I have a bunch of 25ga play piercing needles I got from a while back for fun, did a couple on my stomach surface, put 2 through each cheek to win a bet, silly stuff like that. They're super thin so you barely feel it, I've seen people do full designs though with them and whatnot.

I will never go back to that place, my only two experiences there have been horrible.
The first time, I had set up an appointment to get a tattoo, and they canceled it on me 3 times before I was finally able to get it done. Now this sort of bullshit? What the hell.
I'm going over there sunday to get $$$$ back and/or re-pierced, and will never go back again. Seriously, fuck that place. http://i17.tinypic.com/4ktnzmv.jpg
The artist stopped there and is letting it heal before he does the white ink touchup on August 1st (last session!). That's not red ink, that's just my skin beat up as fuck from a wide needle doing hard shading on it over and over. So happy to be finalizing this after a year of working on it...and already thinking about what I want next :eee:

its giger, right?
oh no its nick
2007-07-19, 07:58 PM
Thanks!!! Yep, Giger it is.
Sessions went about...2.5, 2, 4.5, 3, 2
so 14-14.5 hours total so far i think with another 1-2 to go.
Rate is $200/hr. I usually tip him in the vicinity of 18-20%. So it's not cheap, at all. That rate for tattoing is actually unusually high, and would be offensively high, if this guy wasn't one of the top in the world for this style of work.
My bank account is hurting http://smiliesftw.com/x/wtcwerd.gif

Interesting read tasha, thanks.
It'e even more so interesting considering what my next mod is going to be.
I've been considering it for a while now, and made my decision to go ahead and do it.
I will be getting a sub-dermal implant on the top of my right hand. I sure as fuck will not be getting it done anywhere around here though. I have only been to two shops around this area, and had nothing but bad experiences with all of my experiences with both of these places. I will get it next time I visit Savannah, because I know tons of reputable people around there who can do it.
I am going to get a small, silicone implant on the top of my right hand. Nothing too outrageous. I already know what I want it to be, but I will just let it be a suprise for anyone who wants to see it. :) I actually know for a fact that I will be going back soon, and getting it done quite soon.

It seems like I've had hundreds of piercings over the years ... I still remember when I pierced my eyebrow back in highschool while living with my parents.
My mom saw it on me and smacked my face while I was sleeping.... lol
Since then (92) it seems they've become more accepted by almost every walk of life.
Over time they just got stale though and this last year I finally took my labret out which had the longest run on my face.
I'm left with my 00 lobes which I run silicone eyelets for comfort and my 8g frenum which i like to tap on things when I'm drunk. I've found these are very easy to live with even in a professional enviornment.
Time will tell if any others migrate to my skin...

Yeah, I can't seem to find an artist that can make my tat idea look feminine enough, and since it's larger scale it needs to look pretty damn girly, so I've been on the hunt for a female artist. Binger came to my rescue. I still need to check out her portfolio and have her work on some sketches to get the idea out of my head. But I'll let you know. :D

For me, by the middle-end of the second week, my crusties had pretty much gone away.

However, it was a good 6 months before I'd say they were completely healed.

Actually, that's exactly what I'm using. I like it a lot, and it seems to have worked wonders on my friend's tongue (we got bored one day and decided to go get stuff pierced), it healed in a week. When I got my tongue done it took two weeks to heal using the alcohol-free mouthwash they give you. About three weeks when I got my venoms done with the same stuff. really though, i just wanted to post a picture of my boobs.
( o )( o )
as per nipple piercings, i want to get mine done again eventually. barbels this time around tho and not hoops. i, too, have painful "getting ripped out" experiences - but due to fist fights, not crazy sex.

Arg all this piercing talk is making me fiend. Now I'm even rethinking a nape (I never wanted one before because the only one I've ever seen was a friend's gone way wrong). But, for some strange reason, I really want to pierce the webbing between my thumb and forefinger. So bad.

well, for consolation.......that one isn't bad at all.
i would really only consider that a play piercing. I've had it done several times.
Slides through, right like butta.....just make sure the placement is right.
(i am not suggesting that you do this yourself, just saying that if you were to do it yourself it wouldn't hurt a bit.)

Lol then don't feel weird when, if I ever meet you, I ask you to shove a needle through my hand. How long have you kept em in and how well do they heal up after you take them out??

we have met before at superfunk, but i'm kinda a generic looking guy so I don't blame you for not remembering.
the longest i've ever had it in for was probably about a week.
i always used cbr's and they got in the way.
if you used a barbell though, it could work out just fine. the placement is important though, to keep them from surfacing. if you want me to do it, i will do it. it's probably the easiest piercing to do, except for maybe earlobes. if you want to come out, i'll do it for you for only the charge of jewelry. ($5) i just require that you let me take a picture of it, for my portfolio and whatnot.

Dammit... when I was typing that I was trying to remember if we had met... so sorry- I have a terrible memory.
Thanks- once I start (well, find and start) my new job and get a feel for how that would be received I may take you up on that.

actually, the last time I got mine pierced the piercer gave me barbells instead of hoops. They actually healed a lot better.

on the bod mod tip....
my tongue frenulum is doing nicely, now that it was pierced right.
my nipples are healing up nicely. thats about all of the new news for now.
everything else is fine too. Oh, and I have my plans for the sub-dermal implant. Looks like it will be done next March.
Nick, I have actually been considering getting this done for a while now. It's a Giger piece also, but it won't take up nearly as much space as yours does. I think i will get it done soon.

Love the birth machine. You'd need to get it done fairly large in order to incoporate most of the detail  Do it!

I just need to find a place large enough to put it where:
1. there is not a forest of hair.
2. there is not already ink.
This proves to be a difficult task.
