Rinse Magazine and District Soul sponsored event

THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES ALBUM TOUR

http://www.upfrontdc.com/5dnb/klute.jpg
KLUTE [ Commercial Suicide | Metalheadz ] - UK

Tom Withers (Klute) has been a musician all his life. As Tommy Stupid he released his first 7" aged 15 with his legendary skate punk band, The Stupids. They went on to release several more 7" and Albums with Children of The Revolution and Vinyl Solution Records, John Peel Sessions, and tour the world with their live show.

After a well deserved sabbatical and discovering house and techno Klute was born and Drum and Bass was the music. Initially working for several years with Certificate 18 Records he eventually established Commercial Suicide in 2001, releasing music from a range of artists. Outside the label he continues to DJ and release music with others such as Hospital, 31, Soul:R and Metalheadz.

When not making Drum and Bass, Tom likes to make techno and play drums in his punk band. When not making music, Tom likes to go to skate parks and tend to his beloved allotment.

DYLAN [ Freak | Therapy Sessions ] - UK

The Label Boss and Owner of Freak Recordings, Dylan needs no introduction when it comes to drum and bass. He has been at the top of the scene for some time now and this is well deserved. He has continued to produce killer after killer including the anthem "Need You" with Ink, The Inferno EP, Dominion and Penitentiary to name a few. Dylan's djing has been consistently crippling dancefloors for years. His style ranges from demented darkness to ghetto funk, always retaining those trademark hard-driving, solid beats. Forthcoming projects include an as yet untitled Freak Recordings sub label and releases for Goldie's Metalheadz, as well as continuing onslaught of discothe destroyers for your listening pleasure.

DARKENETIKS [ EXBC (http://www.expansionbroadcast.com) | Strangeland Records (http://www.strangelandrecords.com) ] - DC

Long time supporter of the DC drum&bass scene, Darkenetiks looks to recreate only the best vibes from years past with every set he plays today. Like a Sci-Fi Disco gone wild, his infectious energy and solid selection will put the dancefloor to the test. Check him out, as he shows you what the term "Dance Music" truly means.

SUSHIMINUS [ Ear Wax ] - DC

A DC favorite, Sushiminus returns to club Five with his signature blends and antics. Check him out early as he will be warming up the dancefloor!

ES MUY GRANDE!

that, my friends, is a well-balanced lineup. it's like getting double your recommended dose of b-vitamins (the ones that make you feel alive) for the day.

you get klute, dylan (for all you therapy sessions fans), THE RETURN OF SUSHISTEVE, and lucky ol' me. not to mention the rooftop (which was blazing last month. sure that won't change this time around) i'm really hyped for this one.

sick sick sick sick sick sick sick.

damn, Hive or Dylan...that is the question

I saw Dylan at Kasbah 2 weeks ago, and Hive about a month ago at Five...but since Dylan played on such a shitty sound system i think i might go with five

This night is going to be no joke.

Sushiminus is back! Yeah!

Mikenetiks has a ton of tricks/tunes up his sleeve - old, new, crowd-pleasers, etc. You'll be glad you listened, BELIEVE.

And then there's Klute. The master. The maestro. The MAN.

Seriously, no joke. Don't even wait for a punchline because there isn't one. No jokes here.

The Emperor’s New Clothes, the latest release by Klute (UK producer Tom Withers), is a blistering two-cd collection of drum and bass & techno originals. Withers formerly was a drummer and vocalist in a punk band, and this rock background seems to inform his music. As Klute, his tracks explore the familiar drum and bass format, but offer more of a rock feel.

Withers frequently uses rock drum sounds instead of more electronic sounding samples, along with bass and guitar. As a result, his tracks are unmistakably drum and bass, but sound almost as though they are being performed by a rock band.

Klute’s The Emperor’s New Clothes is great collection of drum and bass tracks, offering a unique twist on the style. It’s one of the best drum and bass releases we’ve heard in a long time - fans of of the style should definitely check it out.

As someone who's seen Dylan spin all up and down the east coast, let me say Dylan tears shit the fuck up everywhere (else) he plays...and crowds get into it BIG TIME. But when he plays in D.C. for some reason, (maybe the mindstate around here isn't conducive to anything but liquid and jump-up? It's hit-or-miss,..sometimes ppl get hype-sometimes they don't (????)

But, (Dylan)- what I DO see is a trend for harder edged DJs to really water their sets down when they play at Club:Five.
Fuck dat!

Apparently, our ideas of what "harder edged" is is different.
A prime example would be the Evol Intent (Knick) party...where everyone's all the set was all bouncy bouncy la la la all night.

And others have made the EXACT same comment as I made before. I'm not alone in this. (Maybe the only one speaking up)
But to be fair...it's not JUST at Club Five

Will be a good night IMO, but I'm biased since I've been a fan of Klute's Djing for several years. I've been listening to his latest album a lot, with "We Control The Vertical," "Flight 727," "Freedom Come" (with Calibre) and "174 BPM" being the standout dnb tracks for me. I've only heard the US-version of the CD, so for the techno/slower tempo stuff, I've only heard 3 or 4 tracks, but I really like "Pissed Jeans," and hopefully I can get the UK-version soon, since I gave the other CD to a friend out in CA. Would like to hear a full on techno set, but I know it won't happen this night.

Looking forward to hearing Dylan too because it's been a while since I've heard him play out. I really liked a lot of his older tunes, mainly old collabs he did with Facs, I think "Polluted Soul" with Friction, and some of the atypical stuff like "House Nation" and "Chicago Sound."

Mike & Steve are aight too.

Then go to Five on Wednesday and you'll have plenty of reasons to take off on Thursday.

1. Work's shitty enough as is, but what's there to look forward to on a Thursday? The only good days of the work week are Wednesday ("half way there!") and Friday.

2. Drink specials.

3. Klute.

4. Dylan.

5. Five's rooftop; featuring some straight up summer vibes in the form of house/funk/hip-hop.

6. Julia's Empanadas & Fuddruckers. They're open late, and what's funnier than catching somebody that claims they're "vegan" crushing a Chorizo Empanada or a Buffalo Burger at 1:00AM?

you should have seen Sneak's dinner before his set at Gallery last summer.... homeboy can put down some food for real!

maybe we should have a DJ battle between the two of them, except it will be based off of how many pieces of jumbo slice pizza they can take down instead of how beast their skills are on the decks....somebody start working out the details.

I really like the new series he's doing with the black and white fliers with minimal use of bright colors to creat a great contrast.... it was crazy looking at Jefferson's flyers and Jon's (Logo's) flyers compared to the rest of the garbage people were handing out at Starscape - they are in a completely different class!

not like that's a surprise though - I can't recall the last Klute track that I didn't enjoy. I listened to You Should Be Ashamed on the way up to Starscape Saturday, followed by I Kamanchi (Krust, Die & Tali) - really put me in the the perfect mood for the evening.

i saw that crew back in the day when they performed at 'The Tunnel'. It was one of those nights where i couldn't tell u if they were there or not , but thanks to my buddy i heard they played a vicious set.

How was Starscape by the way? Craze was really disappointing last time he was in town (at Avenue). 70% of his set was funk, which i understand since it was around the time James Brown had passed away, but for a junglist it was still rather disappointing.

Well thats yo opinion man. The people that stayed late to hear him play obviously thought differently. Honestly I think Dylan killed it last night. Klute was good, but he was absolutely boring compared to Dylan. I really wanted to stay to hear the rest of his set, but my peeps needed to leave. No I'm not saying I liked his set more than Klute's because he's my boy, I'm saying that I liked his set because he was playing all of the nasty bits I've been waiting to hear out live! Large ups to Upfront and 5ive for having him play on that sound system last night! Sucks to admit, but comments like this are proof why DC isn't ready for a Therapy Sessions DC. Anyways, thats a different thread, different topic. Thanx again Upfront!

I felt like Klute played on the harder side of what he normally does in an effort to make the transition to your set a bit easier - but I guess I just prefer actually being able to enjoy the tempo of a tune that isn't quite as hardcore as what you played last night.

I'm happy to hear you are playing different stuff - thats better than playing the same records over and over, year after year. I apologize for the dis, I just expected a lot from you because of the great sets I've seen from you in the past. Everyone has their own opinion - and I could tell plenty of peeps there were feeling your stuff. Bottom line is you proved your talent a long time ago, so one night of tunes I didn't get down to doesn't make a difference on how I look at you as a dj/producer.

Kepp doin your thing man, don't let the messageboards bother you - people just like to analyze the night for hpw it went for them personally - it's no disrespect to the dj/performer.

cheers,

=g

I REALLY enjoyed the stuff Dylan was dropping. It made me happy to see that I still get the same enjoyment from listening to him play out that I did when I first saw him a bajillion years ago. :D

And I wish I could have stayed later than I did, but I had to leave about half an hour into his set because my husband started getting a pounding headache (he broke his nose a couple days ago and is still feeling the effects of it). That and I had to be at work at 7am, hehe.

Biggups! :bravo:

I can't believe dylan is on here giving people shit for saying his music is shit and then after he comes on here all these people are like oh yeah man, dylan was fucking awesome last night, klute was trying to play hard for dylan... blah blah blah. What a load of crap. Klute is leagues ahead of dylan. Maybe dylan should go to pdxdnb.com and give shit to everyone for slagging off that freak night that no one went to cos they have better things to do than pay $35 to listen to a bunch of shit being played by average djs.

Word. Didn't even know Portland had a scene. I have a few friends that live over there and all they talk about is how they have to drive either north(Seattle/Vancouver) or south(Cali).

it's not like dylan just signed up to offer his rebuttal. he's been here awhile.
i mean, dude shit on dylan, because of his style.

anyway, i thought the whole show (at least the whole part that i caught) was extra-crispy.

Actually there wrere 300+ people at the portland event......the promoter went way overboard and booked a fuckin conference centre capable of 3000 capacity! which we didnt even know about...we would never have approved a 3000 capacity venue in portland, and i wasnt even playing there, it was raiden and gein etc.

and now we are doing smaller events in portland!

I sincerely hope people didn't confuse what I said as not enjoying the night... I had a blast - like I do at EVERY UPFRONT EVENT. People that know me on here understand that the love that I have for D&B (and the culture that surrounds it) is not something I take lightly. I guess I'm just really passionate about music, and sometimes when you love something so much you have extremely high expectations. The beautiful thing about this music is the diversity in styles.... and in my opinion there are great tunes from every genre of D&B. When yu listen to as much Drum & Bass as I do, you are bound to be disappointed every now and then, or not like some types of shit - if you just say everything is awesome then it has no meaning when you give compliments - you feel me?

I want Bobby, Yvonne, & the entire Upfront Crew to realize how much respect I have for them - and the amount of gratitude I have for working so hard to provide us with quality events CONSISTENTLY. A lot of heads around here have no fucking clue how lucky there are to have you guys doin your thing - that's real talk - not fluffy bullshit.

With that said, I am going to stick to my initial analysis of Dylan's set - I really didn't like it.... but that's ok - he's still a dope producer, and like I said he has proven his talent long ago. If everyone loves everything then something is wrong with the world.... without dislike their is no like.....
Dylan, I'm sorry if I offended you. But you have to realize that this is a place for heads to talk about how they felt about the night. Would you rather have me lie and said i loved it? To me that wouldn't be fair for you or anyone else.
But I am sorry if I upset you with my opinion.

The way I feel is you gotta be honest with yourself and your opinions on things. My friends know that when I give them a compliment I fucking mean it. So to Upfront, THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART FOR DOING WHAT YOU DO. I fucking love you guys, and you know that if you ever need me to help you out with ANYTHING, I'll be there.

PEACE,

-g

theres a big difference with a person having an opinion and people just being straight up 'everyone in the world owes me something' haters. you had an opinion, and you clarified it. there's nothing wrong with that. it's not as if you troll around the message board posting negatives in any thread that doesn't have something to do with you. youre our people, all is good in the world. =)

Had to be the year before. I think Facs called it quits due to personal reasons or some junk. Was indeed a quality label tho!

Well thats yo opinion man. The people that stayed late to hear him play obviously thought differently. Honestly I think Dylan killed it last night. Klute was good, but he was absolutely boring compared to Dylan.
Now that's interesting. I was the first guy on the dancefloor, and the guy in the circle (and the guy in a dark blue shirt" and Klute's set was more danceable to me than Dylan's was, though Dylan definitely brought the :raveon: that the crowd liked.

SOmebody turned up the system a little too loud on Klute's and Dylans' sets; you can tell those monitors are aged. There is some slight speaker pop.
