Shin splints. They suck ass.

Torn lateral meniscus + ACL + MCL from skiing. Had arthroscopic surgery, first summer of rehab didn't really help, then the second one did the trick. Rehab was a lot of static stretching, stability work, and at the end very light weightlifting.
It gave me a bit of pain for maybe 1-2 years after that occasionally...and since then I've felt 100%, knock on wood.

Both of my wrists hurt right now, but the right one much moreso than the left. It doesn't hurt when moving my hand so my fingers go up and down, but laterally I can only go so far towards my pinky and it's a sharp pain.
I -think- repeated impacts from rolls and jumps in Parkour are to blame, particularly since it was getting better over the weekend and hurts again today. Climbing did not seem to have as much of an effect on it. Both wrists on that outside joint click and pop like my knuckles now too.
Should I be wrapping this? Icing it daily? Thoughts?

I've been getting them a lot recently too - Chris thinks they may not be shin splints since I haven't been working out/doing anything high impact recently & I've been wearing decent shoes...
Icing & tylanol seem to be a temporary fix for me...

I broke my left pinky finger in 7th grade playing basketball.
I broke my right middle finger in 9th grade playing baseball.
I broke my left wrist when I was 19 doing... well... I was 19.
I severely sprained my right ankle in 2005 playing kickball.
When I was 8, I sliced the top of my head open pushing my brother and best friend on the swingset. I needed 22 stitches.
The second one was fun, 'cause with the splint I had it looked like I was constantly giving the finger. It was doubly funny considering I went to Christian school at the time... so I made sure to play it up. :)
These are, of course, on top of the countless scrapes, gouges, cuts, sprained ankles, knees, toes, fingers, numerous contusions in various places, and other assorted things I did to myself growing up.
Wrists are delicate, Phill - make sure you take care of them, and rehab them thoroughly if anything serious happens. I didn't and my wrist still gives me twinges here and there.

That's the worst. I landed pretty wrong on my left leg recently, but I do not appear to have been left with a serious injury.
I think this is 98% because of conditioning work I've done to the surrounding/stabilizing muscles. There's a stretching excersize we do for climbing, lift one leg up, knee bent, to even with the waist, then rotate it out at the hip, then back, then down (without touching the ground). 10 on each leg. But we do them standing on the climbing foam/matts, so your other leg works those stabilizing muscles around the ankle.

That's what I thought you were going for - which is why I stuck with what's bugging me currently...
Old injuries:
Broken wrist (left) - fall while roller blading in 7th grade
Broken ring finger (right hand) - trampoline realted injury in 11th grade
Broken toe (ring? toe, right foot) - drunken friend realted injury in college
Repeated sprained/strained/twisted ankle (right) - started in grade school, repeated injury through college, finally had surgery to remove scar tissue (was so dense it looked like a bone chip or calcium deposit on xrays & MRI) & tighten the ligaments (you could easily pop my ankle out of joint & rotate my foot freely with little to no effort) After PT, it's mostly better now, but will still bother me when I've been standing too long, wear high heels, walk too much or the weather changes

Is it possible that because of this you're walking oddly/incorrectly and causing your shins to hurt? For instance, favoring your left leg or leaning slightly?
Broke my hand 4 years ago and in the last 6-8 months it has started to bother me again and popping everytime i rotate my wrist. it also happens to be the hand i use for my mouse and that doesnt help. i dont think it ever healed properly.

Shin splints can be caused by sudden increases in mileage, walking uphill, overtraining, walking faster than normal, jumping, running stairs, or just too much distance. They can occur on the medial, or inside of the shin, or on the lateral, or outside of your shin. Medial shin splints are usually caused by excessive pronation or flat feet, and often by pounding from running, or sports like tennis, volleyball, and other weight-bearing activities. If you have medial shin splints and flat feet or excessive pronation, an orthotic device or over-the-counter arch support like Powerfeet or Spenco can sometimes be helpful. Make sure it's a full-length insert.
Lateral shin splints (sometimes called anterior shin splints) are usually due to overuse and inflammation of the anterior tibialis muscle and the muscle compartment in the front of the leg, along the outside front of your shin. The anterior tibialis muscle flexes your foot upward. People frequently get anterior shin splints from the repetition of flexing the muscle. For instance, on the treadmill, if you walk fast enough, and for long enough, or if you've suddenly increased the speed, or you're walking on an elevation, the muscle gets overworked and starts to cramp. It would be like doing hundreds of biceps curls until your arm started to cramp. Plus, on the treadmill, there's no letup since the mill just keeps going. You could potentially have the same problem if you walked or ran briskly outdoors for a long period of time at a speed faster than you're used to.
Treatment for shin splints includes rest, massage, ice, stretching, and strengthening. Rest and ice is sometimes the best treatment. You should also be stretching your calves and Achilles tendon real well. If you have the problem during running or walking, try warming up more and don't increase the speed too quickly. You can also try varying the speed and elevation of the treadmill if you use one instead of keeping it the same.
To stretch your calves:
1. Lean against a wall with one leg forward and the knee bent.
2. Keep the rear leg straight, heel on the floor.
3. Keep your back straight and lean your hips forward until you feel a stretch in your calf. If you don't feel it too much, put your toe of the rear leg up on a tree limb, or a dumbbell, or any other small object, so that you bend the ankle more. Your heel always remains on the floor. That will increase the stretch.
4. To stretch the soleus muscle and Achilles (very important for shin splints), do the same calf stretch but bend the back knee slightly and you will feel the pull on your Achilles tendon.
When you stretch, make sure to hold the stretch until you feel looser and not just for 10-15 seconds. The point to stretching is to stretch the muscle, so hold it until you feel stretched.
Also make sure your shoes are sturdy and give you lots of support, particularly in the arch. If your shins hurt you should gently massage them and then ice them after you work out.

Is it possible that because of this you're walking oddly/incorrectly and causing your shins to hurt? For instance, favoring your left leg or leaning slightly?
Possible but unlikely - the shin splints are occuring even on days where my ankle hasn't bothered me in weeks. And before I was allowed to stop going to PT - they made sure my calves were back to the same size and I had equal strength in both. Plus it's been like 6 or 7 years, and the shin splints have started in the last month.
But I'll try to pay attention to if I'm favoring one side (both walking and standing) or leaning (due to carrying a bag on one shoulder)... :ponder: Thanks for the suggestion!

Oh yeah! Current injury that hopefully someone will have ideas or suggestions... I've been getting this weird pain on my back right near the bottom of my right shoulder blade. It feels like someone is stabbing me in one place, then the area right around there feels numb. I started doing some yoga at home 2-3 weeks ago, a couple of mornings a week - but that's about the only thing that's changed since the pain started...

:ranton:
That's what I thought it might be. The pain is intermittent (it doesn't always hurt, but when it does hurt it's constant for several hours/days) - is that something a pinched nerve would do?
I guess I should make a dr's appointment to make sure it's not something serious...

I've read that pain in that area, even including some pain/tingling in arms can be related to head positioning.
You can try stretching your neck out real good on a regular basis, hanging your head to the front, rolling it around, etc as well.

My shoulders suck.. I dislocated one of them in college and now it pops and cracks sometimes when I move it around. I've been contemplating seeing a doctor, and should since I've got some nice coverage.. I wonder if I need to get it scoped or something, but am worried about having to start all over again with the progress I've made this spring if I have to lay off the gym for a while.
Torn lateral meniscus...Had arthroscopic surgery...
My right meniscus is torn, and I've been holding off on getting the surgery.
Haven't really found the "right" time with my busy schedule.
Crap excuse, I know.
I will be getting the surgery soon, though.
Good to know full recovery is possible.
Tell me, did your doctor advise you against running or other high-impact training?
Mine did, and this is discouraging, since I used to be an avid runner.
Other injury:
Developed bilateral elbow tendonitis a few months ago from lifting.
After taking a 2 month-and-then-some hiatus from the gym, I recently felt well enough to go back.
I'm also taking joint-building supplements containing Glucosamine, Chondroitan, and MSM.
Has anyone tried these supplements?
Any success?

Crepitus shoulder joint from the incident at Five years ago. The muscle hardens up and restricts all movement until someone massages it out with a lot of force on a biweekly basis these days.
"Internal Knee Derangement" which is possibly my meniscus in pieces per the ER doc & Tendonitis in my right knee which flared up a few months ago from ballet. I went down in a grand plie three times and felt pain the first time but then heard popping the next two times and then reeealllllly felt the pain. I take Ibuprofen every day and make sure not to agitate the injuries as much as possible. I'm constantly massaging my knee as well as doing some water therapy, using warm/hot water in a jet and letting that massage my knee and promote circulation. I also take Glucosamine/Chondroitin Sulfate/MSM supplements and they work wonders.
This is also the same knee that was in an immobilizer during high school after twisting it running on the track for field hockey.

Yeah, I ran cross country at the time I got the injury (though I did it while skiing). I got lucky in that once they got inside my knee, they were able to cut out the ruptured portion of it and just leave it at that, instead of reconstructive type surgery.
As far as running - my doctor had nothing against it, though it was something to ease into after a lot of rehabilitation as with anything else. It's actually on the favorable side, since there isn't a lot of lateral strain on the knee with straight up running, instead of something like soccer, where moving side to side and digging hard puts a lot of strain on the meniscus. So it's definitely possible to get fully back into running again.
Good luck with the surgery when you do have it :) And don't skip the rehab stretches like I did the first summer! I got lazy...and that hurt me in the end. Listened to everything they said 100% the second round through and I healed up wonderfully. Invested in a knee brace for the first year or two after the rehab to play it safe, and now I can play football with friends, ski backcountry, and have heavy weight on my back for squatting and the knee does fine.

This is all very positive news!
See, my doctor told me that, because they'd be removing damaged parts of my knee's shock absorbtion system, running—or other high-impact, high-strain exercises—might eventually do more damage, since I would essentially have less matter to absorb shock in that knee.
He didn't say that I would never be able to run again, but he highly advised against it.
As for the supplements, I am taking TriFlex Sport from GNC.
This combines all of the following into one pill, taken four times daily:
Glucosamine HCL - 1500 mg
Chondroitin Sulfate, Sodium - 1200 mg
Proprietary Sport Blend (containing White Willow Bark, Hops Cones Extract, Boswellia Serrata Extract, and MSM) - 950 mg
Is this combo tablet good enough, or would I do better seeking out each of these components individually?

concussion from a kid that threw a big rock at me from behind when I was 5.
every finger broken on both hands except my left thumb from my grandmother shutting the car door on them when I was 5.
a 10 inch scar on the left side of my stomach from a branch cutting me when I fell out of a tree at the age of 5.
got severely shocked when I was 6 from a live wire sticking out of the side of a building. (hmmm, I wonder if I'll get shocked if I grab that wire? fuckin' dumb.)
had a baaaaad bicycle wreck when I was 7. my handlebars locked up as I was going down a hill. I hit a metal light pole. cuts and gashes everywhere. not cool.
as far as I can remember, everything was cool after that until 1998.
I got hit in the face with a tire iron. actually, about 3 times.
broke my nose, fractured my eye socket, split along my eyebrow-10 stitches, almost ripped my left ear off, chipped my teeth, fucked my mouth all up, fell full force on the back of my head on the concrete-6 stitches, and a concussion.
sprained my ankle really badly at Cubik a couple years ago. that sucked.
I guess that's it..... so far
Just injured a shitty fucking muscle in my left trap which is extending from my lower back to the bottom of my neck. I can't fucking move my head. I was working my rear delts and was feeling super good form but didnt think the weight was enough to actually give me any resistance, so I upped it 20lbs and the muscle got irritated.
I noted the pain but just dropped the weight back down to finish out my set and when I was done I couldn't move my neck or do any other exercises. So I'm laying here whining to myself with ice on my neck. This sucks.

If you know of something that can help more quickly repair or in the future prevent an injury that someone's posted, please share.
step one - don't start drinking beer at 5PM, especially without eating first
step two - don't take a tray full of free sample shots of hypnotic over to you and your friend's table and proceed to drink 1/2 of them yourself
step three - don't stumble down stairs that are steep, covered in spilled drinks, lacking a handrailing and have a sharp cement corner at the bottom
result - you may not have to get 4 stitches in your forehead at 1AM

While it would be quite a hike for you (he's down here in NoVA) - I can give you the name of my orthopedic surgeon - he used to be the on-field doctor for the steelers. After 5 years & easily twice that many doctors who couldn't figure out what was wrong or what to do about it - he figured it out and asked me what was important to me (being able to run & ski) and told me he'd get me there - which he did.

A lot of my problems/injuries are from playing Field Hockey for so long on astroturf fields. With it being so soft, it's infamous for giving you really bad ankles and knees.
Actually, field hockey in general kind of perma-maimed me. Being so small and honestly really good, I got beat down a lot in College - best injury was taking a full swing of a Field Hockey stick to the head because the girl apparently mixed my head up with the ball that was 10 yards away.
But as far as the major ongoing problems go, my knees and ankles are the worst. Usually if I know I'm going to be doing an activity that's going to require a lot of changes in directions and pivots, I'll just tape my ankles in advance to get my knee brace ready. A lot of it is just preventative stuff, adding extra support and trying to cut off the problem before it happens. The rest of it is usually just treating it afterwards with rub downs, ice (20 on, 20 off!) and small doses of ibuprofen for swelling.
I really want to find a soccer or Field Hockey rec league this summer. :sadblue: I miss getting all sweaty and kicking peoples asses as the two sports that I've always being pimp at.

my knees pop when I do any repeated extending motion (like stair machines) and it hurts like a bitch.
I get over this by avoiding this sort of activity

best injury was taking a full swing of a Field Hockey stick to the head because the girl apparently mixed my head up with the ball that was 10 yards away.
This explains quite a lot.

When working triceps my left elbow hurts like a bitch, I'm thinking it might be tennis elbow. 6 months ago when I was playing raquetball on a regular basis, I had the same thing on my right elbow. Tricep days now suck ass.

More than likely, it's tendonitis (tennis elbow...same thing).
See my earlier posts regarding my experiences with tendonitis:

As for the supplements, I just started taking them, so I don't know from personal experience if they help or not, but some people—including a few people who have posted in this thread—swear by them.
Side note: After 1 week and two days back at the gym, the soreness in my elbows has returned.
Man, I hope those supplements work :sadblue:

If any of you happen to run full force into the vault, instead of vaulting over it.....run straight to the dentist.
Aaron Dardeck gave me a concussion. What a fucking asshole.

I'm not sure what exactly I did [I think I have a pinched nerve], but I have a totally fucked up back. I had a horse flip out and plow me over, stepping on both hips, my right thigh, my stomach, and kicking me in the head [luckly I had a helmet on]. It totally sucked ass, and because of it I have severe back pain almost 24/7, and if I lay on a hard floor too long, my right hip will lock up on me.
But I suck it up on a regular basis.. lifting kids, riding horses, dancing.. but it's gotten to the point where I can barely sleep at night now.
That's really the only serious injury I have.. aside from my knees being a little sore from time-to-time thanks to six years of travel soccer - three of them being in Germany.

This reminds me it's been a LONG time since I've snuck up and smacked your ass.
In other news actually related to this thread, my wrist went from hurting a lot yesterday to not really hurting at all today, and I did not do anything special last night except take a night off from working out.

past injuries (from the ground up):
several broken toes
i think at one time or another i have lost every single one of my toenails, and my big right toenail several times...
sprained ankles
dislocated left knee cap
torn knee ligaments
shattered pelvis and dislocated right hip
bruised tailbone (several times)
broken my left arm twice (two different times, two different locations)
33 stiches in my left hand (bike accident)
and smaller stich-ups here and there.
pinched nerve in right shoulder.
no head injuries as of yet. only have been knocked out once
what still bugs me:
my left knee
both hips (from the shattered pelvis)
nothing sucks as bad as being in a wheelchair and physical therapy of a shattered pelvis

Bursitis in right knee. I went dancing at Five last night, and I held my own (alone on the dancefloor, like usual) from 10:30 until about 11:45 and then had to break for awhile. I'm beginning to suspect that it the bursitis is a symptom of something else. I never injured that knee significantly that I can remember.
