View Full Version : Chicken Legs
Dilemma for all skinny white boys... Chicken legs. I think this is the most undertrained area for most people because for some reason we all focus on upper body. Well, except for women... this seems to be all that you girls ever train with all the fucking running you do.
In the past I've had success with actually building up just about every muscle group to a point that I was pleased with but not once have I ever had any success with my legs. There's a good chance that I probably could have put more time into them but I'm wondering if anyone has any insight... particularly someone who had under-developed legs in the past & was able to overcome it....

I prefer the chicken breast, myself.
well, i prefer human breats.....but they're for rubbing and suckling.....not eating.
also, they make good pillows for when you're passed out drunk.

My legs have gotten larger from a combination of rock climbing and squats/jumps in parkour. It wasn't something I was actively trying to do, it just sorta happened.
I think most men btw, not only focus on upper body, but just the front of the upper body, pecs, biceps, abs, etc.

legs are genetic. any amount of squats, running, etc will only make your legs slightly bigger.
solution - wear long pants always. (chaps in bed).

The "chicken legs" are thickening up Mr. Deuce. Last night it was all kinds of tricky to get a good squeeze on them for massage time since they're getting wider and my hands are kind of small.
Just keep eating 8390854390583 meals a day and doing your compound exercises, they'll bulk up.

the sad reality is that without juicing, it's probably too late for your legs. Most people don't realize that there are only a few periods of your life where you actually build new muscle cells. for the rest of your life you're only able to augment the size of existing cells. this is why I'm on my son all the time to work out and develop those muscles now while he still can... I was "lucky" in that I was in the throes of being a hardcore marching band nerd during the period of time when I was still able to develop muscles... I think that's why I have non chicken legs... anyway, to develop what you do have, do squats... lots and lots and lots of squats... the workout I was supposed to do yesterday (I feel like shit and, thus, didn't go to the gym yesterday) called for 200 squats total... Just doing overheads with a broomstick really starts to pay off after a rep of 20-25...

Martial arts especially kickboxing (moves) will help build up muscle and tone. Squats(squat kick) and running and calf raises, flutter and scissor kicks
Eat 6 meals a day 2 out of 6 high protein, drink protein shakes..eating more will help you gain rather than keep losing or it will steady your fast metabolism

Also, nearly everyone can put on a ton of leg mass, genetics does not limit that. Genetics will limit your muscle shape and hypertrophy at the top end, which i guess makes the difference if you're stepping on stage and competing on a bodybuilding level, but otherwise it's no scapegoat/hindrance.

My honky sweet ass is because of all the skating i did when i was younger
when I was a freshman/sophomore in highschool (and mind, you at the time, I was somewhere around 5' 2" and weighed maybe 110lbs) when we still had PE, I would take my shirt off in the locker room and like straight up giant football players would make comments about how my back, lats and traps were friggin ripped, and they would ask me what I did to get them that way... At the time, I really had no idea, but now, I think I can definitely point to carrying a 20lb marching baritone around a football field for 3-4 hours every day for months on end... I wish my parents had known more about body development and shared that shit with me when I was a kid instead of me having to accidentally figure it out along the way...
I think most men btw, not only focus on upper body, but just the front of the upper body, pecs, biceps, abs, etc.
My gameplan this year is to:
#1 - get rid of the chicken legs.... at least get them in proportion with the rest of me
#2 - build my neck & back - you are so right about people neglecting the back
Everything else is pretty simple as far as my body is concerned. I'm skinny plus I've developed my pecs, abs, and biceps in the past so all it takes is minimal dedication and these muscles will grow fast.
I've unfortunately been one of those people who ignored the other areas so now it's gonna take thrice the effort.
dude, seriously... I know I've only been doing it for a month, but crossfit.com workouts of the day are just AWESOME. that focused muscle stuff is just silly, IMO. I used to think I worked out really hard back in the day, and, yeah, I was in decent shape a few years back, but I can already tell that I'm going to be in SOOO much better shape after a few months of this stuff... Every time I leave the gym, I feel wrecked... like someone ran over me with a truck while beating me with baseball bats, and on days where the WOD is a little too easy, I just get on the treadmill and run my ass off for 15 minutes and that does the trick.
WOD for today---
Three rounds for time of:
- Run 800 meters
- 50 Back Extensions
- 50 Sit-ups
Just thinking about it, I can feel the hurt... let's just hope this fucking cold has abated enough for me to even think about it when it's gym time this afternoon...

Personally, I never really had a problem with my legs since I've been riding bikes in one form or another since I was 6.
But you might give these a go.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_squat
You can do these anywhere, at anytime, for as little or as much as you want.
Start off with 25 in about 30 seconds, if you don't feel tired or winded, try upping it a bit.
I like these and other bodyweight exercises since I don't have time to visit a gym on a regular basis. I do all my exercises in my room in the morning, before I go to work and at night right before I go to sleep.

i dunno about this...i've seen many many people in their 30's build more muscle than ever before...just do squats, deadlifts, benches, etc. to release testosterone in to your body and then go nuts.
my legs are like tree trunks though, mostly from playing lacrosse, wrestling, running, soccer and the like as well as being pedestrian most of my life.

it's like fat cells... you don't add or subtract actual cells... you just increase and decrease their volume... that's why fat teenagers will find it hard to take weight off later in life. They took the opportunity to build fat cells during one of the only times they can in life: puberty. Women are double lucky in that they can create fat and muscle cells while pregnant, which is why watching your weight and continuing to do moderate exercise during pregnancy is so crucial if you don't wanna be wearing mom jeans for the rest of your life.

There are plenty of people who start training much later on in life/at several different points and put on incredible amounts of muscle, drug free. The threshold for the actual "volume" you're talking about is huge. Nobody is truly "damned" until later ages when testosterone levels significantly drop, and if you're really looking for growth then HRT is the solution to supplement to training - and it's common at that point which is why it makes sense. Before that, it's usually just an excuse for people who don't want to work hard enough for their training and something they can blame a lack of progress on (this is not directed at you whatsoever man, just saying people use that mentality to slack off a lot).
I'm still pretty new to deadlifting. I used to do it occasionally a few years ago but had never learned the proper technique. Well, I finally researched the technique and feel like I am doing it right. I just want to be sure...
First off, my legs are fucking KILLING ME from doing the deadlifts. My lower back feels like it got a nice workout too.
My form:
Barbell placed above balls of feet, butt down with back arched backwards, and arms place just outside of my legs.
On the upward motion I am trying to drive my heels into the ground as I lift up & back with the barbell trailing up against my legs. As soon as I start to lift off I feel like my back is doing about 30% of the startup work while my legs are doing the other 70%.
At the height of the motion I bend backward and pull my shoulders as far back as I can.
I've read up on deadlifts a bit before performing but I always had the impression that I would feel the exercise more in my lower back & hamstrings. I am feeling it in my quads & outer quads the absolute most and hamstrings are right about there as well.
Advise please.

i have to agree with John here, from my own personal experience. always had runners legs, even when i was in football back in HS. but since i have changed up my routine, mostly over the last two or so months, i have added inches to my thighs and calves.
my leg routine which i do once a week
squats : 4 sets, 1st being a warmup,
deadlifts : 4 sets
leg presses : 3 sets
laying leg extensions : 4 sets
calf raises with 5 second hold at peak : 4 sets
i do that either thursdays or fridays, i try to change my workout days up each weak to shock the body and keep it out of a set routine. monday or tuesday is usually my crossfit/cross training day which always involves massive amounts of air squats, core lifts, squat throws, box jumpers, stairs, sprints, and short runs.
its all working quite well actually, and the more i do legs, the more i see my mid section melt away. gotta love working those huge muscle groups

No implants.
Unless it's a set of bells being implanted into your balls. What's inside of them now is not really needed, and the jingly sound would be relaxing! And they would make it much more difficult for you to teabag me in my sleep [jerk]. In fact, it's been decided. You will get this done.

I get nauseous/light headed too when I work out my legs really hard, or my stomach.. I'm thinking it has a bit to do with all the blood flowing towards your lower body, but that's just a guess.
Anyone know how to alleviate this? just take more time between sets?

The barbell squat is a really good exercise to build your legs up. 50 percent of the people I see doing it, though, don't go all the way down, and instead start from about a 90 degree knee-bend position like they're doing leg-wide squats. You want to go all the way down with the bar on your shoulder until the back of your foots touching your tuckus.
The barbell squat is a good friend to us dancers, too, because while it tires our legs the soreness doesn't really impinge most dance moves because it's an even soreness through the whole range of knee movement.
