what do you do to get up in the morning?

i have to get up at 6:30AM and every morning its like a battle i wage with myself to get outta bed. i dont go out much anymore so i'll go to bed at a decent time - usually around 10:30.

when i get to work in the morning, i'll drink a coke or a diet coke to wake me up. coffee and most energy drinks are just too hard on my stomach. i'm trying to cut out soda now, but this morning i felt like i was about to go into a coma without it.

anyone have any recommendations? what morning rituals do you all have?

I'd be of no help what so ever. I battle with my alarm clock for an hour each morning, much to the chagrin of anyone around me.

Lately I've been waking up between 5:00-6:30 every morning.

I always drink a cup of cold green tea with honey first thing in the morning, I've found that it helps wake me up but doesn't present the stomach issues I usually get while drinkin coffee.

I've also been getting on the elliptical every morning for a good 20-30 minutes. It's *really* helped me with waking up.

What really helps to wake you up - and I'm not kidding - is to stand on your head after you're done brushing your teeth and being upright for a while. (You don't want to go into a headstand as soon as you've woken up because it might make you dizzy). Standing on your head causes the blood to rush to your brain and it wakes you up. I've only tried it a few times but it's really helped. Most people can't pop into a headstand, what you can do instead is get into the bicycle position with your back on the floor and your butt in the air and try to inch your way up a wall by leaning your feet against it.

Other people might have a better way of getting yourself into the headstand position though.

As for actually getting out of bed intitally, I have no idea. 28 years of waking up and I still haven't learned how to get out of bed when the alarm first goes off.

I'm fighting it.

I was getting up at 11am every day. I managed to work my way back to 10, and for a few days now I've been pushing 9. Today my headache woke me up at 8:30.

If I can I'll try to get Krystle to post something (lol), she's a huge health nut and is incredibly knowledgable about sleep scheduling, it's effects on the body and the best ways to work through it.

as far as working out in the morning, ideally that would be great. i just joined golds gym which is about a 5 minute hike from my work, but i cannot fathom going there in the morning considerin i have to be at work no later than 7:30AM. struggling to get up at 6:30 does me in already.

just get up

i know easier said than done...

i dunno.. fortunately lately i have the problem of waking up super early in the morning, and not being able to go back to sleep, so i'm super restless like, and just get up and go to work early

My alarm clock is ahead by about 20 mins....

I hit the snooze button 2-3 times...

it doesn't matter when I go to sleep, I'm just not a morning person...

Wake up around 6:30 if I'm going to Landover, 7:30 if it's Chantilly...

Drink a cup of coffee, the darkest I can find with no sugar...

i just usually get up and head straight for the shower.
it always refreshes and helps me right after waking up.

what do you do to get up in the morning?

First, I remove my covers.
Then I sit up, swing my legs over the edge of the bed, and put my feet on the floor.
Then I use leverage and a few leg muscles to push myself into an upright and standing position.

I find this works pretty well.

Yeah, I'm *really* fortunate to have an elliptical inside my apartment. I don't think I'd be able to make it to the gym before work, either

i have a treadmill in the spare bedroom, but considering i can hear my neighbors WALK above me, i dont think the neighbors below me would appreciate my treadmill going off at like 5:30 in the morning.

what gets me going in the morning is this: my alarm goes off at 10 of 5, get up, go brush teeth, then do two sets of 20 pushups, nice and slow. get all the blood flowing and wakes you up better then any coffee or tea will.

out the door by 10 of 6, and then get a cup of coffee at work. pushups, they are your friend

I do what I can. I can also give great step-by-step directions on how to shower.

Like someone else said, it doesn't matter *what* time I am waking up, if I have to use an alarm clock it will take me at least an hour of hitting snooze and a lot of griping to get up. Even if I have gotten 12+ hours of sleep. It's the alarm clock itself that does it to me. If I get to wake up naturally on my own I need a lot less sleep than if I have to wake up to an alarm. I've been thinking about getting one of those clocks that are supposed to gradually wake you up, but I don't know anyone who actually has one and have no idea if they work.

Things which help me "wake up" once I'm out of bed: I gotta have coffee, although I usually make it to work before I have some. Taking a shower in the AM really helps me, I used to shower at night because I have more time then, but I always feel a million times better once I shower in the AM. Keeping my room warm helps too - if its cold in my room then I will never want to get out from under the blankets. I tried putting my alarm clock across the room so I have to get up but it doesn't really help.

Oh, I also saw this (http://www.skymall.com/shopping/detail.htm?pid=102248735&c=) in the skymall magazine saturday and am considering getting it. I fear my cats reactions to it though.

I have one. I only got to use it for a few weeks before it broke, and I keep forgetting to call the company and return it for another one, but I do remember waking up feeling more refreshed than with my regular alarm clock or my cell phone.

The one I got does not have a snooze though, so I pretty much had to actually get up.

I'm the same way as you, when I'm out of town and don't set an alarm I wake up bright ass early. When I'm at home and have to set my alarm I -will- hit snooze endlessly.

i hear you on all of this no doubt. I haven't been a "morning person" for my entire life but have found that noit going out pretty much at all anymore and getting to bed consistently by 11 and sleep by midnight really really helpful. Its the inconsistency of my prior practice that screwed me.

Also interesting that so many people on this thread noted coffee screws with their stomachs; I am having such an issue with that right now because i fucking LOVE coffee and can drink 5+ cups a day but it SCREWS my stomach to the point I can't eat and was actually losing significant weight due to it. Sad really. So I've started drinking strong hot tea instead which is a much better circumstance; still a hot drink which I associate with waking up but no acid stomach.

I get up at 8:15 for work if I'm lucky. I set my alarm for 7:30.

In Belize I just magically got up at 5am every day. No alarm.

I think it might be because I was more worn out from my day and therefore able to fall asleep faster. I have the hardest time falling asleep at night.

try putting cream in it. i used to drink my coffee black, but it caused me some irritation. i make my own half&half by mixing 1 part heavy cream : 10 parts milk (cheaper, better tasting and less fattening than prefab half&half) and i haven't had problems with it for many years now.

you might want to give it a try if you usually drink it black...

I think some people are just like that. I would say I drink maybe 5 cups of coffee in a year, but when I do I cannot drink it on any empty stomach or it makes me all kinds of nauseous. Cream or no cream.

the past 4 months i've been working 12-16 hour days, starting at 6:30. It sucked. I finally went back to 7.5 hours a day this week and so far this morning i went for a run, did some quick grocery shopping and still had time to shave with a straight razor.

i'm a morning person, i wake up on my own around 6:30, hop out of bed, fix myself a nice breakfast with a tall glass of OJ to enjoy while I check out Sunrise Earth for a few minutes before I start my day.

Sometimes I bitch in the morning but honestly, even on Saturdays and Sundays I'm up by 8 am, even if I've been drinking the night before.

this (http://www.skymall.com/shopping/detail.htm?pid=102092075&c=&v=&cm_sp=Recommend-_-YMAL-_-ProductPage102092075) looks way cooler. and MUCH less annoying way to wake up.

i think a gradual increase in light and heat would be the best way to wake up. cause you will get too hot and sweaty, then want to take a shower, which will help you wake up even more.

i get up at 530 am everyday. i just get up and get in the shower immediately. I drink a coke while getting ready and then leave for work at 6:20am. Some days are harder then others. I find the mornings that laura is up with me and i can talk to her immediately after the alarm goes off it is easier to wake up and get motivated.

well lately waking up has been a task.
this morning however i got up great. at 6:30 (usually its not till 7)
the changes were
went to bed at 10;20 instead of 11;30
drank a glass of red wine yesterday
i dont know if they are connected.

id recomend having a reason to get out of bed.
-i gotta turn on npr, and cath marketplace
-gotta check my myspace
-a nice hot cup of coffee and check the buzzboard.
--any sort of goal or responsability that you think of the second u get out of bed, -- think about it, ever get that call from that friend "you have to get up right now because yadda yadda yadda" it works.

and also pay attention to your intake. me personally my iron goes down pretty quick, so im pretty much addicted to spinach.
as long as i keep up my iron, im practicly popeye.
(high blood iron also allows better elecric conduction, so you have more energy and you dont get that cold to the bone feeling)

that is my long winded contribution to the study

Coffee makes me really anxious normally too. I can't have more than a cup or two per week. I really like to drink it before going to the gym too, and although I find it doesn't affect me as much then, it's still not great.

Today I'll have to surrender to it though, since I was up till past 2 am.
