I am all over the place with dresses I like for bridesmaids. I thought I would start a thread about dresses in general. So, if you are bored, take a look at some dresses -

Maybe I just like this because of Rome - http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod35504899&parentId=cat7230752&masterId=cat780735&index=0&cmCat=cat000000cat980731cat6000734cat980735cat780735cat7230752

This fits the whole “leaf and branches theme” - http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod32560215&parentId=cat11000752&masterId=cat9100733&index=5&cmCat=cat000000cat980731cat8450747cat8370731cat9100733cat11000752

This is pretty but I don’t know how “off white” and my dress’s “bridal white” would work together - http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod34790117&parentId=cat9860751&masterId=cat9100733&index=10&cmCat=cat000000cat980731cat8450747cat8370731cat9100733cat9860751

Cute, but maybe a little too much, and I don’t think I like red - http://edressme.com/dresses92806r.html

I really like this one, but I do wish the bow was not red - http://edressme.com/dresses37s72.html

This is awesome, but might not be to everyone’s liking - http://edressme.com/dressesd3616l.html

Rome again - http://edressme.com/eveningdressses5909.html

This seems romantic somehow - http://edressme.com/tibidresses5.html

Cute and not a bright color, so the flowers you carry could be really bright - http://edressme.com/dresseskin0429.html

Taffeta just looks fancy - http://edressme.com/dresses1657248.html

I don’t know how this kind of dress looks on a normal person - http://edressme.com/dresses8232044.html

This is cute, but I am kinda trying to stay away from black and white - http://edressme.com/dresses8342040.html

Awesome, but maybe not for a wedding - http://www.edressmeprom.com/promdresses11934.html

I wish there was a pic of this dress with the chick standing normally. There is a good chance this is really ugly - http://www.edressmeprom.com/promdresses10740.html

Romantic but really sexy - http://www.edressmeprom.com/dressestl701l.html

More casual romantic - http://www.edressmeprom.com/dressesed515.html

Really formal, but with flowers - http://www.edressmeprom.com/promdresses10714.html

Formal, sexy, with flowers - http://www.edressmeprom.com/promdresses10599.html

that armani collection is amazing. i love the wedding dress!!

and gaultier is so fabulously out there, it's fantastic.

i looked through most of the dress picks. you really are all over the place with what you like! lol. my friend is getting married at the end of june and only picked a color for her girls. she let them pick a style of dress based on their bodies. then again, she went to vera wang. and really, how can you pick badly there... (tho EEEK on the prices)

AmandaHuie

you guys have no idea. the first post represented 1 of over a dozen emails i sent to my maids. i want them to all love the dress, so i am going to keep on sending pics till all of them agree on one. i am kinda asking them to spend a lot of money, but i am going to also pay for most of their trips to Puerto Rico.

and if all goes well, i will find something we all like for about $250.

emma, i am not calling you a whore at all. i just cant think of wishlists without thinking of encyclopedia dramatica's entry. I read more of that site than i am proud to admit while the Buzzboard was on the main page.

Wishlist
From Encyclopedia Dramatica

Usually associated with Amazon, the wishlist is (in its strictest sense) just that - a list of goods or products one wished one had. Useful for when friends and family have no idea what to buy you for special occasions.

In practice, however, the wishlist has become the tool of camwhores and other attention mongers who use it as a convenient way to disassociate themselves from direct prostitution. The camwhore provides a link to their wishlist on a site (often their user info page on LiveJournal, for example) and would-be cyber-suitors are expected to buy things off the list and send them to the whore. What is given in return for such gifts varies from whore to whore.

fucking Marchesa. why cant my bridesmaids afford you? why would some of your dresses look so good with my dress but probably cost more.

http://www.marchesa.co.uk

About Notte by Marchesa
It sounds too good to be true—a dress that makes you appear a whole size smaller. But that's exactly what best friends Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig created with Notte by Marchesa, named after the eccentric '20s society icon Marchesa Luis Casati. Each dramatic design includes a built-in corset that slims while still remaining comfortable. This and the vintage-inspired design make the line a celebrity and socialite favorite.

and while i am at it, fuck you http://www.net-a-porter.com for already having shit from the spring 2007 lines. when couture returned to super extravagance and stop apologizing for being insane.

:werd: to all of that. I liked some of the notte by marchesa pieces on neiman's site. actually I liked a whole shitload of dresses beyond what made it into my wishlist...the ones I posted (and hence, were from my wishlist) were just the pieces I liked best that could also play a realistic role in my life, and I wouldn't feel like a total asshole buying for myself, money-wise. with the exception of that first one.

Alexis, I was actually going to say the first one. I think you would look even more sophisticated and classy than usual. Lots of people do black and red. It takes a more streamlined beauty to pull of white-and-black-lacy while still looking modern and fresh (and not cheap).

Btw, I should have added, no one better get this first (esp. if you have huge boobs or are insanely thin). I would have to cut you.
Or steal all of your lip gloss. Either way.

:ponder: I wonder if that probably means I should get it, if I'm *that* protective of it...

It's a black and white kimono type wrap dress w/ a black flower lace overlay, but the sleeves are the best part.

And now I'm shoe shopping. Shopping truly is theraputic.

hmmmwell IMO?
I would take a picture of a dress I like and line it up in a photo with how ever many brides maids you have then make them different sizes...some shorter and some taller and some wider. Then you get a better picture of how it will look. I don't know what sizes your friends are or how many...that could be a big factor.

Honestly, I like the off white dress...I have seen cream/tans/whites done and it was beautiful mix that in with a little peachy color here and there? Beautiful! They did lilies of creamish/peachy colors on the white cake. Incredible!!
I also like the grey dress and think it would look really good on most people. The first dress? Wow...that would look horrible if you weren't a twig. Stay away from clingy dresses and things that look like giant presents...like the big bows. You get several girls lined up with those and they look like christmas!

I do like the "romantic" sleeveless dress too...the pink and flowered? That is lovely!! and would loook great on most. The really busy one? cute, but again...think of many girls standing next to you...they would be a distraction. Just say no.
I like the purple and deep colored red dresses too...the short ones from bluefly -- but again with the big bows...they gotta go -- to the rear or not at all.
like this one: "LOOK AT THE BACK ON THIS ONE - http://www.bluefly.com/pages/product...&Nu=Product+ID" It is nice...simple...non-distracting. They could wear it again potentially, pretty color. It would be flattering to most. This is a good choice. :) Plainer colored dresses also photograph well...something to think about.

I liked the black one with the loops and circles on the bottom. It is simple and a cute design that could be incorp. into other aspects of the wedding decor. Would look good on most and not too distracting -- LIKE THE POKA DOT DRESS -- YIKES!! Can you see four ladies next to you all pokadot? uggghhhh....lol that would be silly!
Of course, I like the wai dresses. They are beautiful alone...but all together? too much for bridesmaids and very counter-distracting. Fabrics going everywhere and different colors? Not to mention you put on extra 10 pounds on any of your bridesmaids and they will look horrible in them.

I looked through and thought these were pretty...maybe not what style you are looking for...but the cut and fabric would look good on most and not be distracting or too overwhelming when combined with many of them wearing the same thing.

http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/edressme_1946_23600180

BTW? the armani with the hood? Ugghhh I LOVE it! so Grace Jones! Love the wedding dress too.

I am with Hope. I would pick out two and let the bridesmaids decide...majority rules. :) That way...no one can bitch directly at you if they don't like it and i would talk to them about price-range as well if it is an issue.

Good luck Missy!! :) hope it helped. :D

ok so i think this would be the appropriate thread to post in... it's a wedding dress question but not for a bride..

my friend is getting married on may 19th.... she is having a black tie wedding/reception... can i wear my little black cocktail dress or do i need something fancier?

EmmaK
2007-04-26, 08:53 AM
If it's truly black tie, and the men will be in tuxes, then past rules would have dictated you wear a longer dress. However, things have loosened up/modernized, and a shorter/cocktail-length dress can be just as appropriate, provided it's truly a formal dress. How "dressy" is it? And how strict is your friend's dress code?

When in doubt, if you're close enough with the hostess, you can always ask her for a suggestion or clarification. And if you're not close enough with her, try her best friend.

Eh, although I agree with your points about the "pros" of the dress, I wouldn't consider it to be the best ever. It's not the most flattering shape (due to the blousey/shapeless poof around the stomach and hips) or length (showing the knees, but none of the thinner parts of the upper leg) for many women.

I think you should go for a fun theme... like...

bridesmaids in an over the top floral print and you in a light blue dress + apron... an Alice in the Garden Theme...

or... bridesmaids in dresses with obnoxiously large bows and you in a giant, ornamented forest green gown: a Christmas Tree with Presents Theme

bridesmaids in black on white / white on black polka dots, you wrapped in fur: a Cruella DeVille + 101 Dalmations Theme

well my sister actually paid for the dress itself. (she offered that right before she asked me the bit about hiring a make-up artist to cover my tattoos....score one for guilt.) that was like $300.

however i'm paying for the alterations which are coming out to about $100, because i have a wide back and big boobs so they ordered me a big size and there is alot to take in. plus the tricky ribbon and the fact that there are 3 different layers to hem. blech.

Forever21. You'll be able to find one for 25-30, and since you have perfect legs, you can wear the bazillions of short styles they have out right now. No, it's not $8, but when it comes to dresses, under 30 is still absurdly affordable.

2007-05-25, 12:41 PM
It's a size 6

These are the measurements from the Betsey Johnson size chart

6
bust- 33 1/2- 34
waist: 27"
high hip 33 1/2
low hip 36 3/4

I'm a medium, this is a very small medium.

For ladies into burlesque style clothing hitting up thrift stores might be fun. I'm not into that style myself but def have seen older styles that might work if you're into mixing and matching stuff. I like getting creative in thrift shops and mixing/matching any cool finds.

I've been dying to go thrifting (esp. to vintage shops, actually) for a LONG time. If some people wanna get together for a trip sometime, I am down. I started doing some research about places online but didn't finish; that list is saved on my home computer.

I've seen some of her shoes on VS. None of her shoes come in my size but I can appreciate the uniqueness of them.

I did end up getting this (http://images01.overstock.com/images/products/L10547812.jpg) dress in the black and red. If I get that blue one I'll be done buying dresses for this season. I never have an occasion to wear them. :delirious:

I did notice the size differences when I went to the Betsey Johnson store at Tysons. I tried on one dress in an 8 and it was too small, and then I tried on another dress in a 4 and it fit perfect.

OFF TOPIC one of my e-bay favorite sellers:

As far as thrift stores to go to..I find vintage designer or rad dresses that I liek to tear up and make new or give a new look...

- Killer Trash in Fells Point..good for unique/costume like occasions
- The Zone & Dream Street?...off of N. Charles in The Villiage..good for classic/flamboyant/costumery and your friend that is a drag queen
-Villiage Thrift Store in Laurel, MD...really large good if your into the 50's, 60's, 80's etc...
-Salvation Army in Laurel/Savage MD..If you like the 70's, 40's, 80's
-K'D's Consignments off of 450 Crofton...she has really unique/designer stuff and alot of Jessica Mc Clintock etc...

There are a few in Annapolis that are pretty cool..I just can't think of their name
I rip stuff apart ALL the time from these places...it's rare when I don't
