TUNE!
Is this out anywhere yet?
ummm i dont know. it didn't get officially picked up so maybe not.
I suppose I can add a few obvious tracks, but I couldn't rank them with any significant meaning:
Dr Kucho! - Hallelujah - Disc Doctor
- that might be my #2 of the year
John 00 Fleming - Rasa Lila (John C Remix) - J00F
- spot on hot production and it certainly doesn't hurt that I love pimpin local stuff
Roger Sanchez - Lost (Tom Novy's Lost in Space Remix) - Ultra
- beautiful track, perfect vocals, genius remix
Claude VonStroke - The Whistler - Dirtybird
- simplest construct for a track ever that I have to thank Beth P for ID'ing for me from Chris Lake's mix she let me preview; even though it almost certainly doesn't mesh well with my typical sound, I always look for a way to fit it in
Angel Alanis - Do U Like the Way U Feel When U Shake? (Mix 2) - Asquared Musik
- I mean, come on... what's not to love about a track that loops "shake that ass and bounce those tits"!?
The Bongo Man - Ugwanga - Moxi Records
- I bought more production by "The Bongo Man" than essentially any other producer in 2006, so this choice is largely arbitrary; there's very little stuff this guy has produced that I haven't liked ALOT
Vinyl Life - Rhythm Rock You - Rexhouse Music
- damn... just damn...I really know how VL will ever top this track...the more you hear it, the more you love it...techy and evil as it is...
Kobbe & Aftertouch ft. Gina Martina - Slave (Drum Ur Face Mix) - Tribal Traxx
- this is a relatively new addition to my library but, frankly, it's the first track I've heard in a while that I said, "Dayum, I must have that!" when I heard the sample--pure hot
Matt Dekay & Mick Boskamp - Weekender - Audio Therapy
- simply a great track
definitely a few tracks that warrant honorable mention including Danny Tenaglia's "D'Ibiza", a dozen different Jaimy and Peter Presta tracks, but while all of these had their hot moment, they simply didn't have the staying power in my collection to make the top tracks of the year...

Ok... I'm putting this out there... and I'll likely think to change it tomorrow and either reorder it, or take something from my honorable mentions category and replace it in the top 10... but here goes:
1. Jamie Lidell - When I Come Back Around (Freeform Reform) -- This remix is the funkiest goddamned thing I've heard all year... it's things like this (even though the decision was made before this was released) that made me want to bring Anu/FF5 to DC for my birthday
2. Depeche Mode vs The Church - Church of Jon (James Z's THIEFschwartz remix) -- Fanciulli dropped this the night I played with him and Woolford. Needless to say I kirked the fuck out!
3. Pet Shop Boys - Sodom (Trentemoller remix) -- Trentemoller works his magic on my favorite band... nothing more needs to be said here.
4. Lindstrom - I Feel Space (Freeform Reform) -- The only thing about this track which disappoints me is that I never heard it when I wasn't DJ'ing. I HATE songs that run near ten minutes or more. This one clocks in at nearly 12. But it keeps itself fresh all the way through. When the bassline kicks in at about 4 minutes in, hearing this on the dancefloor is about the sexiest fucking thing I have ever heard. I mean, i seriously hear this and feel about the same sensations as I get from an orgasm... minus the stickiness.
5. Kelis - Lil Star (Linus Loves remix) -- this shit's gonna take dance floors by storm.
6. Motor - 1 X 1 (Phil Kieran Remix) -- this is some dirty, nasty electro tech shit that blows my mind everytime I hear it.
7. Rogue Traders - Watching You (Chris Lake remix)/Sebastien leger - Hypnotized (Chris lake remix) -- I'm just giving these both the same slot for convenience's sake. Both are fantastic... and demonstrate why Chris Lake was a dominant producer of the year..
8. Alloy Mental - We Have Control -- this shit destroys dancefloors...
9. Depeche Mode - Martyr (Booka Shade Full Vocal Mix) -- I honestly prefer this mix to the original. it's brilliantly done with a great use of a sample from Behind The Wheel.
10. Metric - Monster Hospital (MSTRKRFT Remix) -- Its the intro to this that really gets me... which makes it only really good for an intro track to a prime time slot... but fuckin hell it's hot.
also, old track of 2006: while only 3 years old, I somehow found Da Brat - Boom (Tommie Sunshine's Brooklyn Fire Remix) find its way into a ton of sets this year and had people rocking over it.
and, finally, my honorable mentions (in no particular order):
Shapemod (feat Snax) - Love's Too Much (S036 Mix)
Shlavens & D-Lav feat The Little Blonde - Back For More (D-Lav's Dub)
Mark Knight feat Katherine Ells - Insatiable (Buick Project Mix)
Daisy Daisy - Michelle Plays Ping Pong (Vicarious Bliss Match Point Remix)
Jon Aquavivia & Luetzenkirchen - No Fear (Luetzenkirchen Remix)
The Presets - Girl & The Sea (Cut Copy Mix)
Booka shade - In White Rooms
Cicada - The Things You Say (Dirty South Mix)
Misc. - B Movie 6:00 AM
Bodyrox - Yeah Yeah (Electro mix)
Green Velvet - Shake & Pop (Mark Grant Mix)
Bitter:Sweet - Dirty Laundry (Morgan Page remix)

It's a remake of the Level 42 song. The Hatiras 'original' was one my top 10 of 2006 - it's a serious tune.

But yeah at Five he played an absolutely wicked remix - it gave me goosebumps.
Ah, wow.... Euphoria thanks for reminding me about Crank. That was probably the biggest tune in 2006 just judging from what I've seen. I think almost every jock has dropped that and it still continues to destroy.

4. Ron Reeser & Matt Frost "Around(Hatiras & Macca rmx)" << this one gets me all hot in the pantalones much like the next track

7. Moby "Jam for the ladies (Jason Nevins club blaster mix)" << nice rework
8. Primo "Cuban Blues" << perfect summer track right here

You're not educating me at all - nothing I haven't already known for ages - I just think Walking Wounded is so much better than Temeramental..........and Future of the Future is probably in the all time top 50 - absolutely essential - I've had it for years on CD single, on Deep Dish Junk Science, and I just recently picked it up on vinyl for the fun of it.

PATT was huge but really only stuck for a minute before everyone in the world was bitching about it.
Yeah Yeah is totally still sticking so I'd have to vote that this is in the top 2 hugest of the year. But Crank is definitely there as well. Not because I like the song but because of the amount of play it has received. Every dj I know jumped on that records cock as soon as it came out and there's still a heavy number of people still playing it. When you hear either of these tracks in the future you're going to turn to your friends and say "That was totally 2006."

Ok, I gotta say it.
I *HATE* the D.Ramirez remix of Yeah Yeah. And Lost. And all the other stuff that sounds exactly like that.
That to me is like the Little Jon of dance music - really annoying yet somehow catchy/accessible.

every time I've ever heard someone rock that remix of Yeah Yeah.. all I can think is "why would you play that when there's the electro mix?"...

Also never jumped on the D. Ramirez bandwagon... seems to me to own one of his tracks is to own them all... Ronda bought Yeah Yeah, and I knew I didn't need to explore the guy's production any more... :D

His 2005 was way different and cooler than his 2006 shit.
And is it true that D.Ramirez and Mason (who did Exceeder) are the same person? Because Exceeder was cool.

When you hear either of these tracks in the future you're going to turn to your friends and say "That was totally 2006."
Well, that has been my point exactly about crappy music - I try to buy great music that sounds timeless and won't be irrelevant in a year.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - too many people are more concerned with "new" than they are with "good".
Sadly, and with no offense to anyone here, I look at a lot of these "top 10 for 2006" lists and I know that in 10 years time NONE of these tunes would have any shot at making the "top 100 of the last decade" list!
That tells you something.

remember what I was saying about needing to amend my shit after a day or so?
I totally forgot easily my favorite track of the year (not so much that I forgot it, I just somehow thought it came out LAST year)...
and while twochordtool is going to say that it's not something that will be remembered as a big song a year or so from now... he's wrong...
the tune:
Tiga - (far from) Home (Speed of Sexor Reprise)

I dunno if anyone cares about minimal techno, but the top 10 tunes of the year for me were:
Martin Buttrich - Full Clip EP [Planet E]
always love the stuff Buttrich does for Loco Dice... but this one was way more classic.
Dominik Eulberg & Gabriel Ananda - Harzer Roller [Traum]
the track just breathes so well. best track by either Ananda or Eulberg, and that's saying something.
GummiHz - Elastic [Mobilee]
if this record is playing, everyone is dancing like retards. never heard a record quite as weird as this one go down so well so consistently. drums!
Quixote - Adoquin [Vakant]
it's mnml techno but it's clearly influenced by some of the better new dubstep stylings. absolute filth.
Rhythm & Sound - Dem Never Know (Sleeparchive Mix)[Burial Mix]
I love Rhythm & Sound... great early night or afterhours stuff here on the remix
Heartthrob - Baby Kate [M_Nus]
I dont care how played out this is, everyone flips out the first time they hear this record programmed well. that counts for something. so simple, so good.
Mike Shannon - Global Pleasurism [Wagon Repair]
The bassline. ooof. nasty stuff. guaranteed floor filler.
Salif Keita - Yamore (Luciano Remix)[Cadenza]
the pawn shop jam... best party I've ever been to, and this record sort of typifies it.
Alex Under - El Encuentro [Plus 8]
Alex was my favorite artist of 2005 by miles, and this record wasnt a letdown. it's one of the few records that can just totally creep you out with disturbing melodies if you dont have your head screwed on at the time. It got a little played out, but that's because it was dope as hell.
Damian Schwartz - Fueron Dos Y Volvio Uno [CMYK]
the Spanish sound that's coming out right now is so damn groovy. really jazzy, really cheese-free.

Killer list Aaron. R&S puts out such top notch tunes. During my recent trip to Germany I picked up a lot of their stuff...the Remixes album is incredible.

shit i'm still trying to figure out minimal. there's some shit that sounds straight up minimal techno but then there's shit that is electro but sounds like minimal glitch and i have no freakin idea what to classify it as. which is a pain for me because i organize my collection based on genre so i at least have an idea of what it is that i'm grabbing for.
perfect example is the Tiefschwarz Fabric 29 session... wtf does that classify as to you? (not to start another genre debate... but there's such thin lines lately)

Kobbe and Austin Leeds - Wonder Where My Girl Is? (White/Pure Music)yay! another track that I actually own... The partnership of Kobbe and Austin Leeds this year has been a match made in heaven, IMO... Most every track that they've put out has been magic... "La Dance Cultura" that just released on Tweek'd is really pretty great if you haven't heard it yet...

it was a remix originally done on commission for the label. I mean, it's great to say you have it in your collection... for instance, I have the white label promo (although official release) that was put out for the Shep Pettibone remixes of Bizzare Love Triangle... but if I posted a chart of my favorite 80s remixes, I wouldn't label it a "white label" cause that would just be silly... it would just come off as trying to make something mainstream appear underground for "cool points"

just a couple off the top of my head . . . i stopped playing house and started playing almost all breaks only a couple months ago so it's kinda hard to pick . . .
Mike Litt - Hard Times (Luetzenkirchen rmx)
Rob Mooney - Mac Love (Jay Cox rmx)
Dave Robertson - 1 Dunk Wonder (Electric Press rmx)
Slyde - Vibrate to This (Trouble Soup rmx)
. . . this just came out but it's so goddamn good . . .
Future Funk Squad - Audio Damage . . . the original . . . love it!
Circuit Breaker - Kick that Bass
Madox - Hypnotic Funk
ok maybe that's more than a couple . . .
You're leaving out all the Rennie Pilgrem tracks from this year if you're doing all breaks...

I absolutely love this tune. the part after the break kills me.
My top ten tunes:
Digital Mystikz - DMZ vs MZN.
Hijak - Butcha
Loefah - System (i will pull this tune up anytime anyone plays it. It's happened before...it will happen again.)
Distance - Traffic
Pinch - Quawalli. I'm glad he listened to me and put this one out.
The entire Burial album.
Skream - Mi Love It.
Digital Mystikz(Coki) - Torture.
Kromestar - Kalawanji
Scuba - Twista. I still remember the looks on everyone's faces in London this past March when i played this tune for the first time. No one had heard it before....tore the place down.

Probably my all-time faves from breaks are anything by Rennie Pilgrem, Rogue Element, Tom Real, and Peter Paul. Unfortunately I've been slack on picking up any breaks so my collection really only extends up to July of this year. Rennie's tracks that I'm thinking offhand were "Gladiator" and "Celebrity" but he put out a freaking arsenal of high quality shit.
