NONE OF THEM CAN BE TRUSTED.
They don't want to say anything bad about anyone, especially if they have their noses up certain producers and DJ's asses.

Musical taste is subjective and people will have their bias.
Listen to the music, use reviews as a guide, not fact.
twochordcool
2006-11-25, 06:03 PM
Yeah but the reviews are AALLWWAAYYSS to the artists favor - AALLWWAAYYSS.
And a record that really should be a 3 out of 10 is given a 9 out of 10.
Look at Holden's "The Idiots Are Winning" or Jimmy Van M's Balance CD - UTTER TRASH - yet the reviewers ALWAYS grade them as if Christ himself made the music.
It's just fucking ridiculous.
Maybe when we can start calling a turd a turd we can get around to having higher expectations and producers will start making some better music.
Afterall, that is why I never became involved in producing myself, because I know that I don't have it in me and I am "humble" enough to accept that.
It's also the reason that, even though I own 2000 records, I won't refer to myself as a DJ - until I tweak the things that are still bugging me and get out there and make people dance and make some money.
And before you attack me, I think the former is far more important than the latter (making people dance).

i've done a small bit of record reviewing in the past, and i'll say that most of my reviews were positive because i only picked records i liked. why should i go out of my way and bring light to a tune that i thought sucked.
if you're talking about reviews on record store sites, then yes they are all gonna be positive because they wanna sell records.
twochordcool
2006-11-25, 07:46 PM
No, not record stores, but the people and websites that I listed, that have no incentive whatsoever to be lenient or kind in their reviews, other than to not hurt people's feelings.
I don't rely on reviews anyway, but 99% of the time after reading the reviews and getting around to listen to the reviewed music I'm left scratching my head and actually kinda pissed off.
Movie critics would be out of a job if they were "nice" about movies and people went and afterwards thought, "what the FUCK was that guy smoking?"
I mean, HOW CAN you call that Holden record a 9? It's atrocious. Can we PLEASE stop with this blatant stupidity?

That's a good, and obvious point. People are going to review things, because they want that positive review out there. Unless you're vengeful, why go to something you're not going to enjoy? The point is to sell the record.

Man, I've read plenty of negative reviews on Resident Advisor. But at the same time, the Balance series is a creation of Australia, if I'm not mistaken, as is Resident Advisor - and that site does seem a bit biased towards their fellow countrymen.
Myself, I review music for FunkyHouseMusic.com, and most of my reviews are positive. It's because I have only so much time to review tracks, so the ones that jump out at me are the ones that are great and I want to share with everyone. I usually only give negative reviews if I feel strongly negative about something - like if I was let down by a favorite producer or dj, etc.

Needless to say (and it's already been said....ad-naseum), music criticism is a hopelessly subjective task. In fact, if you read most of what critics write...or at least, the really bad ones..you see that much of the objective in their writings isn't necessarily to review music, but rather convince the reader that they possess sufficient authority to make judgments about popular culture. To achieve this effect, critics engage in an almost acrobatic levels of navel-gazing, by engaging the following obnoxious habits:
- constantly referencing obscure bands long shoved down the memory hole,
- identifying (or even making up) new niche sub-sub-subgenres, musical trends, and even the social theories that are supposed to spawn them,
- turning artist/band names into adjectives by ending them w/ -like or -que (Dylanesque, Tupac-like),
- using half-baked ideas from critical theory to ascribe a deeper meaning into whatever their subject is (though the real purpose is to make sure that you see them name-checking Foucault and Jameson....oooooo, very fucking impressive)
yes...i hold an incredibly dim view of most music critics. I think the words "I liked it" or "I didn't like it", would be sufficient for about 99% of the "reviews" out there.

your "wisdom" has one fatal flaw:
there's plenty of amazing new things happening in music over the last few years... just because you can't find them, or can't appreciate them makes it no less so...
(edit: and, yes, JB... a lot of that has nothing to do with 'electro' :neener: )

i'm no spring chicken (31 yrs old), but i can appreciate that music changes, taste is subjective, and individual tastes change as you get older. you would not have heard me listening to johnny cash or tom waits 5 years ago, but that's just because i didn't know any better. now i do. i used to DJ progressive, but i haven't bought a progressive track in over a year. i'm digging all sorts of drum n' bass right now though.
everytime i get bored with the music i'm currently listening to or fed up with dance music producers that i've liked in the past but currently am not feeling, some other music comes along and piques my interest. but i have to actively search for it more often than not. bitching and moaning about how music sucks will get you nowhere.
so please, join in the discussion of music instead of being that jaded dude in the corner who thinks he knows everything but is unwilling to share. heck, if you discuss music instead of panning it, you might even learn something from the young 'uns and discover some new music that gets you movin'. =)

A lot of dance music reviews are written from a very narrow focus of a particular genre or sub-scene or whatever. Most of the time a lot of those records can't stand on their own when you put them out there to compete with all types of music. A lot of records that are reviewed seem to have a very specific purpose and are almost reviewed as DJ tools rather than actual music.

I heard that 2 Turd Tool likes happy hardcore. Seriously, him and Daniella Downs had a naked 180 bpm e-pile ky-jelly wrestling match while doing lines of coke of each others butt cracks.

that's what the KKK said.
ever notice how the people who always feel the most entitled to their opinions tend to also be the people with the worst opinions?
Actually I'm opinionated because I am sharp, and I know right from wrong and good from bad.
And I haven't flat out said it yet, but odds are the music that you like really does blow.

I don't know what is more stupid. Your posts, or the that you came onto an electronic music discussion board to talk about how much you don't like electronic music.
Make that "don't like MUCH electronic music LATELY".

Plus, obviously people are digging today's shit otherwise it wouldn't be selling and people would be listening to it. Common sense.
With MP3's being like 99 cents I don't think the fact that they're selling proves much of anything.

Well, considering I have owned about 2,000 records, have been djing for more than a decade, have nearly a thousand CDs as well as 300 gigs of music. Chances are, you are right.

EDIT: I said something here that didn't even need to be said because everyone who's been reading your posts already knows.
From now on . . . nothing you write will merit any sort of response from me. I'm pretending you don't exist from here on out. I should have done that a while ago.
Later.
