View Full Version : Any DnB heads feeling dubstep at all?

I recently have caught a serious case of dubstep fever, I'm just curious as to how many other people are feeling it. I've been stockpiling mp3's and mixing it up lately and should have a mix done soon.
Are there any strictly dubstep parties in Bmore, or DC?
That might have to get done.

Agreed...well, except on the mixing part, since I don't spin. I'm sure there will be a few people ready to jump on this thread with the knowledge.

you NEED to make it up to new york for DubFWD. Hatcha, Youngsta and Scuba! not to mention Joe Nice and Dave Q. It's gonna be huge huge huge! Massive tunes all night long. it's on saturday 9/30.

new york is a bit far away, but that's the biggest lineup you are likely to find on this coast.

in fact... I hardly ever listen to dnb anymore, it's not nearly as exciting.

I think DNB is equally as exciting as the Dubstep. Both musically do eet for me.

ive been feelin some dubstep fro a while now, but listening to mixes isnt as awesome as hearing live over the bass heavy system, which is why there needs to be more Dubstep at parties... I know it would make Joe Nice a happy person for b-more/DC to understand how big it is....

Dubstep is gonna blow up! watch out!

I haven't been to a party with it (er...that I remember, at least) and would really like to, for that very reason.

Greg's given me no choice but to get introduced to Dubstep. I've never been a big fan of garage, and the dubstep that produced on that tip really isn't my cup of Brandy. I am, however, really feelign the more cerebral, middle eastern laiden tunes that have been dropping. Since it's produced at a lower BPM than D&B, a lot of the sounds are much more intricate. Still isn't going to replace D&B for me though...

In my opinion, it won't be long before seperate factions of dubstep start shooting off....and then the hating begins. That's how you know that genre has made it's mark on the EDM world.

:wall:

i don't really see most of DC "getting" dubstep, as DC's traditionally been house+trance territory moreso than drum, bass, and dubbed out sounds

anyway, i like some of it but a good chunk of it bores me to tears. just like any music genre i guess.

i can get down with it and have been following it for quite awhile now, mostly thanks to krull.. but it's not really something i'm totally swept up in or about to start spinning.

i have a lot of respect for the music and i enjoy it but it's just such a niche style that it's hard seeing it work in many clubs. i don't really know if awareness is exactly something that will be able to make it break out of that mold, but maybe something will. i know it can go off quite successfully at parties in other places so maybe it will with more time.

RickyRicardo

^^

It certainly happened in NY, and is happening in San Fran...but neither of those places are Balt/DC. I do think w/ time and some actual exposure (on decent systems) it can catch on here to. It's really already started. Hell, I've seen more dubstep threads on this board in the last year than I ever remember seeing previously. That's at least a sign that people are open to it, and willing to go out and see it.

thanks. i always rep this area, but i know this area is slow to catch on to new things -- that's why i've been traveling and pushing so much recently. Check this month's XLR8R article. (http://www.kidkameleon.com/xlr8r/dubstep.pdf) Not playing around here -- well, that's one thing. I can deal with it. I know people dont always like what i play, but people respect what i do. That's cool with me.

and -- you're right, dubstep is gonna blow up. i said as much on the BBC dubstep documentary (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/collective/A10695684) a while back.

and -- dubstep isnt gonna splinter into different factions, like d & b. it's not gonna go that way. sorry.

Jessi - FWD>> is the shit...isnt it? If any party around this area went off like FWD>> regularly goes off -- my goodness.

I certainly hope that people's interest/involvement in dubstep isnt a bandwagon sort of thing.

Dunno man. If enough ppl get into it, I think it's inevitable. You know that there are already many different opinions out there as to what "real" dubstep is. If there are enough folks who are on board w/ one style, they'll splitner off on their own. Not really a bad thing either, imo.

maybe you can help me out with this. I was watching one of those videos I linked and I paused it on a FWD sign that said "before you spend your hard earned money...", do you possibly know what the rest of the sign said?

i know this detail is minute and inconsequential, but I'm really curious as to what they have to warn you about.

Joe played a show at sonar in November of '04 where he had a guy named MC Twisty, that guy can flow. he never repeated anything, he always said original things, he even knew when to shut up! I have it on my computer and I'm sure if you ask Joe he can hook you up somehow. I'd defenetly give it a listen.

Nobody has really seen him lately, so I've heard.

also, make sure the MC you do get understands the dynamic of the music. Double time flow might be ok over dnb, but it sounds like crap over dubstep. You need a slower, more deliberate pace; its actually very close to talking speed.

I'm mostly a Breaks and House-head (and I dabble a bit in dnb) and up until about 6 months ago, I had no idea what dubstep was.
Then I became better friends with Joe Nice, and what started as a mild curiosity of the genre completely morphed into a heavy interest.
I have told both Joe and DecoyMike, on several occasions, how much I want to try my hand at playing dubstep.
I don't think I'd ever switch over to this genre completely, but I would love to add it to my bag of DJ know-how.
And I agree, it's a very niche-based genre, and for that reason alone, I think it will take time and a lot of serious effort for this genre to gain the recognition it needs to develop a strong following in the DC/Baltimore area.
But, as others have said, when it's being played—loudly, on a nice system—to a crowd of dubby enthusiasts, there is absolutely no question how hyped the room gets.
I mean, people just blow-the-fuck-up to this music.
It really does create an intense vibe.

it's by Skream and Benga. it's in a Rinse FM mix by N-type in this thread (http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=7985&highlight=judgement+judgment). it's also in this mix (http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=7723&highlight=judgement+judgment), by distinction.

good luck in trying to aquire it though. as far as attainable tunes are concerned, you may want to get Tapped (http://www.redeyerecords1.co.uk/sounds/cat9129.asf) by Skream when it comes out. The promos are sold out, but the full release should be comming soon.

also, anything by Vex'd. Vex'd has a very techy and dark style that the dnb lovers seem comfortable with.

I agree. From the mixes that I've heard, it can be very easy for the MC to be too much in the forefront.

As far as the genre of dubstep not factioning off, that's inevitable if the music continues to get bigger. Just from what I have heard, there is some of it that I love and some that I cannot stand. I'd be willing to bet that most people who have been exposed to the full spectrum of what's out there would agree. I'd be interested to know if the heads over in London that have been supporting dubstep parties are mostly former D&B heads or if they are new to EDM alltogether.

My head has been in the clouds lately with a lot of music stuff, kind of spaced out on a bit of dnb, breaks and dubstep stuff. But when I hear a dubstep tune I like, I genuinly really like the tune. Bought a couple tunes too, mainly just to have to listen to.

What is kind of ironic for me though is reading about people and labels, and then hearing about Ammunition, I realized I have Vehicle 001 from a few years ago, and one or two older Horsepower Production tunes on Tempa.
