Angel Alanis A-Squared Muzik | In|Stereo | Los Angeles | Chicago
http://www.prefixparty.com/c/prefix/img/dj_angel_alanis.jpg
Angel Alanis (aka A-squared, Subsonik) is one of today's most diverse and consistent producers of dance music to come out of Chicago. With an uninterrupted flow of releases since 1997, he has unleashed explosive tracks ranging from funky disco workouts to tribal house, through the depths of hard-house and minimal techno.
Angel's distinct production style has given him the opportunity to collaborate with and re-mix for artists such as Sinead O'Connor, Kool Moe Dee, Julia Fordman, DJ Dan, Robbie Rivera, and a re-mix for Joey Negro which occupied the #1 spot on the Billboard Top 20.
During the mid '90s, Angel participated in the promotion company Mushgroove, helping throw and promote techno parties. It provided him with valuable experience as he learned the business side of dance music and planted deep roots in Chicago's underground scene. Developing a strong and unshakeable interest in music production, Angel set out to create a sound of his own.
After releasing his debut EP 'Advanced Therapy' (1997) via Contact Records, Angel caught the attention of Bad Boy Bill's infamous label group, Mix Connection Multimedia (MCM). Angel delivered his next track 'Reverse Polarities' (1997) which launched the MCM label Contaminated Records. Soon Angel was officially signed to MCM and went on to release numerous classic tracks through Contaminated, International House Records (IHR), and Moody. In 1999, Angel delivered his full-length debut album The Subconscious State of Techno which received outstanding reviews from publications like URB, BPM, and MIXMAG, as well as critical acclaim from artists like Armand van Helden, Judge Jules, and Laidback Luke.
In 2001, Angel formed his independent label, A-Squared Muzik, and released his underground hit 'Do You Like the Way You Feel When You Shake'. It was featured on numerous compilations world-wide, including Darren Emerson's 'Global Underground: Live in Singapore,' Charles Feelgood's 'DJ Mixed,' Christian Smith's 'tronic Treatment', and DJ Dan's 'In Stereo.'
With A-Squared Muzik's tech-house and tribal sound, Angel needed an outlet for other styles of music that he wanted to release. He started two new labels, A Trax and Subject Unknown. Bringing back the Chicago sound he is known for, the first release on A Trax, 'Funkin Dance' is bumpin' funky Chicago house featuring three mixes (house, techno, hard house) making it incredibly DJ friendly. Subject Unknown brings out a darker, more experimental sound that we can look forward to hearing in the near future.
2004 is proving to be a plentiful year for Angel. While securing a spot on BPM Magazine's Top 100 DJ List, producing DJ Colette's Dancestar Award winning song 'Feelin' Hypnotized' for use in a Motorola commercial, releasing brand new tracks on DJ Dan's In Stereo, Donald Glaude's Eden, as well as the funky floor filler 'InternASStional' on his own label A-Squared, Angel is spending most of his time in the studio working on his full length artist album under the name Magic Elephant Orchestra. The album includes a full range of musical styles from harder edged industrial rock to light melodic electronica. This year Angel is sure to unleash more new sounds that will surprise and delight his fans.

Anyone who is reading this, here are a few friendly tips to improve your image if you are IN-FACT a hooker.
1. Stop hangin out on the corner... this includes approaching random cars from the corner for a "chat"... and saying things like, "Ya need a date big boy?", or, "Hey baby... I'm into whatever you're into."
2. Don't use heavy eye shoadow to hide donkey punch bruises...
3. Don't ask for payments up-front... just rude... wait til you get to the room.
4. Stop calling your boyfriend/signifigant other "Pimp-Daddy"
5. Stop posting "I am not a hooker"... no one believes you!

Didn't mean to intrude - just wanted to extend an invite to your crew and let you know how to get in free.... if it was the same night, obviosly I wouldn't have mentioned anything. Glad to see you guys didn't take it the wrong way.

hehe - don't take everything as such a competition broseph, HOUSE MUSIC is about love - not hate - not who's party is better - the reason soooo many house weekly parties never make it past 4-6 months is because people are too damn proud about reppin' their shit, and what their crew is doing.
If everyone would just chill out and have fun - house music would go much further in the area.
Glad to hear you guys had another good night, wish I had been there for Angel's set.

All of the sets were just tasty, I was really sad that I missed half of Deuce's set due to 495 repaving the middle two lanes *again* near the split. It was recorded, right? Melo was on point and kept it at just the right energy level. Then Angel was just :lessthanthree:. I can't believe it's been so long since someone's brought him out.

no need for PM - cuz there isn't much more to say (and if you think this thread is solely about promo, or any other thread for that matter, go back and read through how many posts have absolutley nothing to do with the party - kind of like your post about trance)

What's wrong with having standards? If the DJs even come half way with what they're asked for, there's a nice bump in attendance.
Asking a little bit more of the local dj's is only going to lead to a better and more packed party. Nothing wrong with asking for a little proactive behavior from people that you book.

Seems as though there's a bit of negativity coming from that.
I like DnB, Trip Hop, Hip Hop, Turntablism, Dubstep and countless other genres...but you can't expect a one-roomed venue that already had a pre-selected format to carry the weight of booking that varied of a lineup.

it has nothing to do with not booking dnb...
it has everything to do with the fact that you have all these standards for the local talent you are willing to book and yet your resident djs cant draw in those same numbers...come on now???
and neither can your headliners...
u cant expect the local talent to bear the grunt of the responsibilities when it comes to bringing in a crowd
maybe look into different headliners...b/c honestly i havent heard of a single one of the headliners you guys have booked except josh the funky one, and i came out for that night...it was a good night tho

God forbid someone bring a dj other than Micro, BBB or John B.
I think you're reading entirely too deep into the 'standards'. Locals have the means to get a personal pull, and *should* be getting support by promoting parties that they play. Headliner's rely on their name and prodcution work to get people, sometimes it hits, sometimes it doesn't. The residents each do a shit ton of promoting for the party...a lot of the crowd that does come, comes due to their efforts.
Does it even effect you?

ok in the first place i dont like micro, bbb or john b, so :catie:
and in the second place, of course locals promote the parties that they play and ask their friends to come out to hear them but that doesnt mean they should be held to a standard of "must bring 50 people"
all in all what it comes down to is that THEY ARE NOT the promoters...theyre the talent...you guys book them in hopes that they will draw a crowd yes but its not THEIR JOB to do it
i mean buzzlife never required the djs that opened the front room to "bring 50 people with them" :noway:

So what you're saying is that you prefer that the guys throwing this party shouldn't do everything in their power to pull as many people to their venue as possible? :beaker:
And while locals are in fact 'the talent', they don't have the name to flash around that someone that can be placed as a 'headliner' would have. It *is* their responsibility to get people to come out to the party and support them. That is how people become *gasp* headliners. Aside from that, do ou honestly think that other clubs don't have some sort of method behind their booking of locals? This isn't buzzlife and it's not fair to compare, but do you think that they would have booked a local that wouldn't even draw in 10 people? It's BAD business.
You really need to get past the wording of standards, the locals that opt to play aren't going to be stoned to death or anything if they fail to bring 50+ attendees. It's simply a standard that they dj should aim for.

:orly:
First of all, the DJs @ PreFix thread was posted without all members of District Ignition's input but posted with good intentions. While I agree with almost all information that was posted in that original thread, there are some things I would have changed on it. That has already been addressed but is a lost cause at this point...
The number of people a DJ could bring was in no way a requirement. But I seem to remember the same thing being said over and over and over again in my years of dealing with electronic music... "When is enter name of venue here going to bring some new names to the scene?"
I personally have asked this many many times. I get sick of constantly seeing Bad Boy Bill, Micro, Tiesto, Oakenfold, Aphrodite, Sasha, etc. etc. etc. playing at venues. We at PreFix have been trying to bring new names and names that we feel people would be excited to hear again that aren't around enough. The problem with that is that those names do not pull in enough people attendance-wise to cover the cost of the artist(s). We try to find other ways to bring people in so that we may keep the entry cost around $10-$15 such as street promotion teams (that go out every day of the week) and DJs that have some sort of draw within the local community.
I could consistantly bring artists like BBB, Micro, Sasha, Oakenfold, AK1200, Dieselboy, Aphrodite, etc. if I wanted to make a huge profit and be just as boring and bland and the next super-club, but I don't. I can't afford most of those names anyway, but I don't want to bore myself to death either. Would the real D & B and Jungle heads out there be satisfied if we kept AK, Dieselboy, and Aphrodite on a continuous rotation? I don't think so. But I would bet an entire paycheck that they would more than pay for themselves by the yuppy-head kids out there that still say "OH MY GOD AK1200 IS LIKE TOTALLY THE BEST TECHNO, SO IS TIESTO! TEEHEE" Pardon us for tryin to think outside the mainstream box and bring not-so-well-known talent to the area, but we have to try and find ways of breaking even to keep the party going because artists like DJ Whatt, Jaimy, and Woody McBride are not going to pay for themselves by their name alone.
Ramz's original post may have presented an unwelcome feeling with the requested numbers on behalf of DJs wanting to play PreFix, but that was not the intention. He has apologized and now I am. Need we take this further?
On the D & B issue. We have tried in the past and have considered bringing it to PreFix on more than one occassion. The general concensus is that Ocean Drive is not the venue to bring it to. I have been looking for a venue to expand to that has 2 or more rooms with full intentions of making one room for DnB, Jungle, Dub, and Triphop. So far I have not had any offers for a Friday or Saturday night spot. I've had plenty of Thursday and Sunday offers, but I am not one to step on the toes of promoters and artists I respect in our small EDM community. Sure, I can start a two-room party on a Thursday right now if I wanted offering DnB on one floor ... but I would feel like i'm saying fuck you to Charlie, the peeps down at Hell in Adams Morgan, etc. and stepping on their toes just to make a potential buck. No thanks.
We realize there is a huge demand on behalf of the community for these genres. I don't think that it is fair to cram a few local DnB DJs in a mix of local and headlining house, techno, or breaks DJs a few times per month. I don't think it would do any of you justice in respect to proper exposure in the community, do you?
So please, bear with us as we continue to look for bigger venues to better serve everyone. With 1 room and a maximum capacity similar to an inflateable kids pool, we don't have the means to cater to all genres at the moment. We are working on it, I promise. If and when I can find the new venue, I don't plan to hesitate one bit on booking the local artists one bit. And if you're still not satisfied, I'll even send you the list of DnB, Jungle, Dub, and Triphop artists I plan to book as soon as I get the venue.
Now, I plan on killing this 1.75 of Stoli via Bloody Marys all night and think about what to do. Any personal attacks, PM me, i'll be more than happy to respond. Thanks for reading and hopefully understanding/bearing with us.
-Steve

If they want to gain any sort of name in the area, and get to the level of playing out at clubs like the former Nation and other large venues...yeah...the DO have to do some sort of self promotion. It's kind of how you get yourself out of tiny venues on Tuesday nights, and into a Friday night gig playing for large crowds.

The main thing I noticed was almost every other genre was open to the chance to play pre-fix but not dnb. Maybe the way to do it, was to say every genre is welcome to getting a chace to play, and simple telling them no personally, rather then excluding them right off the top. Now I wasn't crying over the issue, just wanted to push forward the music I love so much. Cause in all honesty we all love music. It may be Trance, House, DNB, Hip Hop, whatever, in the end we all have the same common bond, we love music and believe in the sound we love so much.
I dont think anyone who is into music as passionately as we are like standards. Standards set the bar for what is to be expected. Most of these people that are seeking out a professional promoted party, a dj career, a producer in music or what have you always want to set the standards. Thus pushing the bar futher then the requirments of a standard. This is what Ramz was trying to do, and I dont think the 50 people a local dj should bring is far off to reach. I kno with my events I expect the same thing. I want my djs to be out there working the scene. Putting flyers on the cars, hand to hand promotion at various venue's, hitting up people's myspace ... anything to get the name out and another person on the dancefloor. Most promoters bust their asses for their events, put their entire hearts on the line, and expect the DJ's that play the night to have an equal enthusiasm to promote as passionately as the promoter who is throwing the event. Throwing a quality night is very hard to do, and to have one successful is even harder. Cheers to pre-fix for aiming their goals a bar up above the standard. Excellence is achieved by setting difficult goals. Keep setting the bar higher guys with or without dnb, because really its all music & for me thats sweet sweet love.

I never saw ramz "attack" anyone. I've seen nothing but TROLLING, yes TROLLING coming from *3* board members in particular since it was said that Pre-Fix isn't necessarily looking to book DNB, and it was explained by Chad as to WHY they don't book DNB.
hmmmm... but isnt a troll a person who makes a pointless post or thread with no merit pending towards any of the issues. Lot of these guys just want to play, and dnb has been booked there before, so it is worth a shot, imo. In the end, I feel my resposiblility I have with this music is to push the envelope and try to reach a futher awareness to other audiences and to bridge the gaps between other genres. Once again alot of these heads just want to get heard and just want to play on a loud system at a good party, being organized properly. Some of these guys play out once in 3 months, and if are guilty of anything its just simply wanting to play what they love.

I agree here. A local DJ has to help with promotions. How else do they secure future bookings if they dont promote the events they are booked. Believe me every Headlining DJ has started at the bottom, using small events to promote their name to other listeners. We all have to be a self absorbed whore and pimp our own names, thats how its done. Bookings Dont Fall in your lab. You work hard to establish your name. Many times by the people you kno. The best way to meet new people, is promoting a event that you are booked with. Cos in the end its all who you kno.
and we didn't exclude only DNB, either...just for the record...

Well you guys booked Counterstrike so obviously you havent totally excluded dnb. But in the original post you made you never included DNB. Like imo, and this is only a opinion, give everyone a chance to play, and simple tell people who are not right your plans for the party in a private matter. Now dont take this as I'm trying to tell you how to run a party or anything like that, this is just opinionated. I see it sort of like a job interview, you cant not hire a person just cos they are handicap, a woman, a ex con or whatever, but you can tell them, sorry your just not qualifed, and your resume just dont meet our standards for the job. Ramz I think you guys are doing a good thing, anyone who is putting a event on for the love of music is alright with me. Keep setting the standards, I hope you guys achieve your goals, as a successful night is a win for all the genres of music.

Not to add more fuel to the fire, but when shit like this stems up the original point is lost in some cases...
By excluding dnb you are excluding more people attending your party, plain and simple. You can say that you havent excluded dnb but I havent heard any dnb there since Counterstrike and that wasnt even a Pre-fix party. Even if it was that was months ago.
People dont go to Pre-fix for there own reasons, and obviously that is causing low attendence, resulting in the need for local djs to play and bring a certain number of people with them. As a dj I tell all my friends if Im playing even the smallest gigs, but putting a number on the amount of people you need to bring is insulting and down right foolish. I understand that this wasnt a requirement, but it sure seemed that way.
In the future I wouldnt allow just one person in your group to post a thread speaking for the whole, after all thats what started this whole thing
you're seriously making assumptions that are completely wrong... establishing standards is more of a way to enhance the quality of the performance, not a desperate ploy to increase attendance... Attendance has been more than fine most every night since the move to Fridays, so I don't even know what you're screaming about any more... It just doesn't make sense...
...not that I recall anyone asking for your sage advice in the first place, but whatever...

Screaming?.....No, just my two cents
Of the 5 or 6 times I have attended Pre-fix there wasnt more than 20 people there outside of the first night after buzz was closed
Im not making assumptions, I am just going on what I have seen the times I have gone. If you cant take critisism thats not my fault

Seriously dude, get over yourself, I dont give a fuck if you asked for my advice or not, and I dont recal giving any, its a msg board, shocker people have opinions
Of the 5 or 6 times I have attended Pre-fix there wasnt more than 20 people there outside of the first night after buzz was closednow that's just an outright lie (unless of course you were there at 10:05 and ditched immediately thereafter). it's so clear to me now... this is just you're own personal smear campaign to get back at our decision to have a format... why am I even bothering to respond? guess, what, I'm not any more... I love the PreFix party. I love the people that I get to work with, and I love the hundreds of people that have come out nearly every week since we moved to fridays. me standing outside of Envy on a Thursday night complaining that there isn't house is almost as valid as your argument, so I don't even know why I'm diginifying it with a response... guess I lost my head for a minute...
