FEELING SAD CUZ YOU DON'T HAVE ANY BEACH PLANS FOR LABOR DAY?
WE GOT YOU COVERED!

A very special Gallery Sessions is coming your way Saturday September 2nd!
ROY DAVIS JR. & JUNIOR SANCHEZ - CHICAGO/NY SESSIONS

The time has come to welcome back Gallery Resident Roy Davis Jr. His last visit with Paul Johnson will stay in our hearts and minds forever. What does Mr. Davis have in store for us this time? You will have to come and see for yourself! Roy will be joined by NYC legend Junior Sanchez, who’s constant desire to reinvent his sound has earned him respect worldwide as one of the most innovative young producers/DJs today. Also in store for this special night - Ricardo Santamaria will be performing an opening set requested by Roy Davis Jr himself.

ROY DAVIS JR [Ubiquity, Undaground Therapy, Nice + Smooth, Chicago]
Roy describes the music that he makes as "soul electrica"; soul music mixed with electronics. His style has changed and grown up through the years as he has been going back to his spiritual roots in house music, away from the sound that he once was associated with - Phuture's "acid" and "wild pitch."

JUNIOR SANCHEZ [Cube Recordings, X-Mix Productions, NYC]
No stranger to the flattery of being imitated, Junior Sanchez stands head and shoulders above the overgrown crowd of Pop-Punk and Electro DJ’s in the US and the world around. His many styles and diverse tastes in music breathe life into his sets and bring freshness to the dance floor that is rarely duplicated. Junior is constantly introducing new remixes and new tracks – often his own – into the mix along with a healthy amount of the best tracks of the past and present. Come witness for yourself the unmistakable sound of Junior Sanchez.

This will also be the final monthly 88 Degrees party of the year (88 Music will continue to provide music for the Alley & Terrace through the fall, however this will be their final "88 Degrees" party). If you don't know what that is, you've missed out all summer...don't miss this one! Visual Artists: 4Traits: 5 - 8pm Traditionally, portrait art has been an intimate process a work of art created by one artist working with one subject. 4Traits are an entirely new concept. A team of artists working together on a group of portraits. In an assembly line fashion, every artist adding to every portrait publicly, simultaneously improvising as they go, like a jazz quartet. Blackmoth aka Kari Altmann: 7 - 10pm A digital multimedia artist from Texas, currently attending MICA in Baltimore as a video major. Her work has been featured in places like Beautiful Decay, Ruby Mag, AMODA in Austin, and various websites. Video and animation are her newest arenas to experiment with and this is one of her first and freshest vj gigs. Blackmoth is known for her use of color, her experimental nature, and her ability to connect to people via imagery. A big fan of anything innovative, charming, or simply emotionally honest, her works are always a tricky mix of personal, surreal, or ambiguous messages. blackmoth.org // blackmothstudios.com // myspace.com/blackmoth More to come! Music: Joe Nice from 12 - 2:30am More to come!

As you can see, we have a lot in store for this very special Labor Day Weekend/End of the Summer Bash....No work on Monday, so that gives even more reason to PARTY YOUR ASS OFF at Gallery on Saturday!

As if you needed anything else to add to the day's festivities, Body Rock will also be holding their final Summer Sessions Park Party at Arlington Gateway Park during the day..... Make sure you stop by and say hello before you come to Gallery! The 88 Degrees Party runs from 4-10ish on the Terrace, so you have plenty of time to hit both the park and the 88 Degrees Party!!!!

I'll be kidnapping everyone from the park party at around 6:30 - 7:00 - I'm planning on stealing a school bus (a short yellow one) and throwing everyone in it. Don't worry though, I'll be providing FREE warm beer for the short ride up to Silver Spring ;)

Seriously though guys, if it does end up raining, I am gonna cry on someone's shoulder..... but at least bad weather can't ruin the whole day! I am confident that the Music Gods will protect the park and the terrace/alley at Gallery on Saturday, but if it does end up getting really nasty outside - we will be getting down and dirty inside till 4AM!

Actually, it looks like the worst of the rain will be coming through on Friday - Saturday's forecast calls for SCATTERED T-SHOWERS (40% chance of precip.)
I think we will be fine!!!!

Rain doesn't matter at Gallery...all we do is pop inside, let it pass, and roll back out. Game on!

Saturday, September 2
We've mentioned Gallery in this column a few times in recent months -- and Fritz just reviewed the club in the Weekend section last Friday -- but the user-friendly Silver Spring nightspot is continuing to assemble some of the coolest DJ lineups around, perfect for dancing until 4 a.m., indoors and out. This weekend's set is one of the fiercest yet: Roy Davis Jr., one of the founding fathers of Chicago house, brings his smooth, soulful, funky beats to the dance floor to face off against the roughed-up, pulsing electro and house of Junior Sanchez, who's known for remixing the likes of Bloc Party, the Bravery, Gorillaz and Madonna. Out in the back alley, you've got the jumped-up two-step sound of Joe Nice. The whole afternoon kicks off at 4 p.m. with the 88 Degrees team's terrace party: As DJs Ezekiel Honig, Morgan Packard, Nicholas Sauser, Ben Parris and Mistake spin on the restaurant's large patio, artists work on the club's graffiti wall, paint portraits (assembly-line style, no less) and show off video projects. It all sounds like an incredibly cool way to spend 12 hours, doesn't it? Women enter free before midnight and can abuse the open bar from 10 to 11, while guys pay nothing until 11, $10 from 11 to midnight and $15 after that.

Oh yeah... btw - in case you didn't hear, just confirmed TODD TERRY for Sept. 30th! If you don't know, you betta axe somebody.

That was fun despite no Sanchez. I've never heard of Ben Parris or that crew outside but my god. I was in minimal techno heaven. I only caught Parris' set of the group but it was so good I had to ask who it was when he was done.

Quote of the night... "THIS is techno?" *half hour later* "So, this is STILL techno right?" -Binger

LOL.

I still don't know where the dj booth was in the main room. I thought that was cool. I thought Joe Nice was good as well, although the tunes needed more bass. Overall hella fun.:smileyparty:

what happened to junior sanchez!?

He was suppose to fly in from NY/NJ and land in DC around 6pm. But due to bad weather (Ernesto) all airports in the North East (NY, NJ, Philly, Delaware) region was delayed 3-4 hours. His flight eventually got cancelled. Sanchez stayed at the airport until 8pm to try to catch another flight but no avail. For a time we could not contact him and hope that he did get on a plane. But then 10pm rolled around when he texted us, he decided he should just go home. We are currently working on another date for him to come to Gallery. Thank you everyone who showed up and thanks for understanding.
When it's Man vs Nature, we usually lose. Again thanks and much love!
