\\ HISTORY \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

> Detroit Techno Militia's T. Linder, Neil V., and Dan Lucas have all made headlining performances at the world-renowned Detroit Electronic Music Festival. JaMaul Redmond, the newest addition to the DTM crew, is an accomplished DJ and producer who will be demonstrating his studio skills by way of a live performance using various tone modules from his studio arsenal. The members of Detroit Techno Militia are not as angry as you might think, however. The only bombs that interest them are of the vinyl variety, and the soldiers' only mission is the "battle for the soul of the music." (www.detroittechnomilitia.com (http://www.detroittechnomilitia.com))

> Detroit Techno Militia will be celebrating their newly minted record label, created in a deal with Cratesavers Muzik, a record label founded by the legendary Trackmasta Lou of SCAN7 and Posatronix formerly of AUX88. Detroit Techno Militia launched the label to display the latent talent within the militia. "With the likes of their self-termed 'soldiers', the militia is unstoppable" said Mike Harmon, long time DTM supporter and electronic music aficionado. "Forming a record label is the next step they needed to take after building their solid reputation in Detroit and around the world." Their in your face style of producing and DJing will surely raise eyebrows around and throughout the techno music community. The "take no prisoners" attitude towards their music helps the militia to advance and spread the gospel of the music that inspires them, and that will surely speak volumes. Detroit Techno Militia was established as a grass roots DJ/Producer collective on a mission to promote Detroit Electronic Music around the world. All members are deeply inspired by Detroit's' techno history and work closely with several of Detroit's most influential DJ's and producers. Members include Andy Hegler, Annix, Dan Lucas, Darkcube, Der Mercenary, Dimitri Pike, Doc, Loner9, Mitch Walcott, Neil V., Sougon and T.Linder. We are actually thinking about a Ghettotek night in the near future. We figured Assault, Godfather...maybe one more. We'll be seeing how things work out.

September we've got the killer lineup that will bring you through all the various subgenre's....techhouse, more minimal and more banging techno.

As the night progresses, we're looking at bringing in the real innovators in techno music, whether on the minimal, maximal, banging, ghetto or whatever side you can think of. We're going to bring names to D.C. that no one thought possible.

Our main point with this party is that the world of techno has been moving along quite well, and D.C. has been missing it. Our mission is to change that, to educate the people, and to have one killer party right after another.

I got there right after you left.... I have heard Tzeech throw down decent sets before, but I guess last night I was either in a bad mood - or he was waaaaaay off. Cuz it was serously painful to listen to. Everybody has to have bad nights though - no disrespect intended, keep doin your thing Tzeech.

Neh....I understand. I think he was trying out some more experimental shit that night....I just didn't get too much of a vibe off it.

Plus....I wasn't drinking. Not much point in staying too much longer after Simon got done dropping justice.

what was the problem??:ponder:

i thought it was a good set, but thanks for the input. It's hard to play in DC, I have to walk the fine line of techno and club/techno to get people on the dance floor. Come out for pre-fix, i'll have a great set for you guys.

I didn't really have a problem at all Tzeech. I just wasn't drinking, and thus was fucking tired (I'm a old man dammit).

If anything, I'd just try to stay true to the roots. Minimal techno and forget what the heads in the crowd are doing. "Club" techno just doesn't cut it around here. Keep it real, play what the movers and shakers in the techno community are playing and people will come to respect whatever you play, whether they groove to it or not.

Mastery in techno is an artform unto itself....especially since techno is "club based" music.

I've never heard a techno "mix-cd" that can even come 10 yards from listening to a true master playing techno to a sold out club of people partying their asses off. Techno is performance music plain and simple. I like to think of it as the type of shit the Greatful Dead or Phish used to play. On CD it sounds like the same old shit, but when it's live, you are in fucking heaven, because both bands knew how to give a fucking PERFORMANCE. Techno is the same way...not about the recording, but about the performance.

When I DJ, I worry less about the tracks than I do about the crowd and I pick shit based upon what I think will bring everybody higher and higher and higher until they all pop like fucking popcorn.

Good point about the techno - performance relationship. I never really thought of it that way, I guess cause I grew up in Detroit where that was just the norm. That paragraph totally reminded me of Jeff Mills' performance @ Liquid Room though. I don't know a techno-head without it.

It's really peculiar, which is why you don't realize it at first. I mean...if you want to hear house, you can go out and buy a house CD no problem.

Trance? Drum and Bass? Breaks (whether Florida or UK)? All the same.

The closest you can find to buying a tech-house CD is John Kelley's last release "United DJs of America, Vol. 19: John Kelley" (which, if you don't have it, is an incredibly awesome CD.

And techno? You have Misstress Barbara, who has put a lot of effort in bringing techno to the masses.

Still....there is an entire world of difference between Misstress Barbara live and on her recordings. There is something about the essence of techno and tech-house that resonates in people, turning the performance into more than just the sum of the music played.

Techno is like musical Red Bull. It brings people into a soulful land where the music has control. It reverberates through people's bodies that can't be repeated when listened to on a car stereo or a home stereo....it needs some good subwoofers and speakers and a bunch of similar heads out to carry you away.

That's why it's so hard to explain to the masses why they want to go hear a bunch of clicks and beeps. Because you really can't provide them with good examples (except as you mentioned, Jeff Mills Live at the Liquid Room, and other good bootlegs). The DTM and Maya Amack sets on this thread are good....but nothing like a live performance.

Fucker...now I'm going to have to do some searching on Soulseek. :atpc:

Actually I have bought quite of the few Fabric CD's and I'd say you are right on the tech-house tip. Adam Beyer was the only "techno" one I saw, which was pretty good, but not like seeing him live.

So....to start introducing the soldiers who will be out with Detroit Techno Militia on August 11, 2006, we'll start with T. Linder:

http://www.tlinder.com/images/DTMimages/tlinderbrkwall.jpg

T.Linder is one of the Detroit Underground's best kept secrets. Extremely conscious of the historic significance of Techno in his hometown, T.Linder has done his homework and paid his dues. His street-honed DJ skills and dedication to Detroit's electronic music tradition have earned him recognition and respect from many of his mentors.

He's rocked hundreds of events in Detroit and throughout North America; Including such high-profile gigs as the World Electronic Music Festival in Ontario, Canada (2000) and the Underground Stage at the 2002 Detroit Electronic Music Festival.

Never one to follow fads, fashion or format, T.Linder's track selection can cover a wide range of genres and eras in any given set. Audiences can expect him to drop anything from the Electro-funk of the early '80s to white labels of brand new Techno tracks. Anything pressed to vinyl is potential ammunition for his arsenal.

When T.Linder was asked to define his particular style. Paraphrasing Derrick May, he answered, "It's like Nitzer Ebb and Rakim stuck in a studio with only my records to keep them company."

More to come on the other soldiers....

And now to introduce the next solider in the Militia....Dan Lucas

http://www.mixedsignalsdc.com/images/danlucas.jpg

In a time of monotonous techno DJs, Dan is one of the few who strive to bring hard, fast-paced, and precise DJ sets to people's ears. Specializing in techno of the harder flavor, Dan utilizes three turntables to rock sound systems and heads. The solid mixing Dan brings to the tables makes it possible to incorporate multiple genres into his sets.

Not content with sticking to one style of techno, his track selection is extremely diverse. Ranging from hard techno, Detroit, acid, minimal, electro and booty. Dan has also had the pleasure of playing for crowds in Chicago, Toronto, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.

What does Dan say about his main role in DTM?

Musically, I am the guy in the group who tries everything. Booty, detroit, hard techno, 3 tables. I try to be the jack of all trades. But I limit myself to the new school in my sets. I’m always trying to use the decks and records to make crazy mixes. I hate it when only one record is playing. I bring the fucking madness to DTM. Fist throwing, hoot-hollering madness.

In general, I suppose I am the pretty boy of DTM, at least on the outside. I look like I should be spinning trance, or florida breaks.

Why is Dan part of DTM?

From certain performers all the way down to the patrons of techno events, this city is full of fake fucks who do this shit for the wrong reasons. it’s been going on for too long. We (DTM) could give a fuck about what most of the scenesters think about us. Every time we play out, whether it be individually, or together, we; rock the house, play with style and class, and have a great time wherever we are at. Being able to play out with people who share the same views about techno in Detroit, as myself, is a blessing. It’s guaranteed whenever I play with these guys, I will have a great night and get to hear some of the best DJ talent that this city has to offer. I don’t see that a lot with other people. It’s more of a competition. We compete with each other. But it’s more of a learning experience. I think we each learn something from the other when we tag, or even listen to each other’s mix CDs. I’ve never really seen the kind of friendship and respect that we have in the techno community before. Not to mention the musical knowledge between us. I don’t think there’s a techno record that, collectively, at least one of us is unfamiliar with.

stormryder
2006-08-06, 07:41 PM
For the next of the Soldiers...let's move on to Neil V.

http://www.mixedsignalsdc.com/images/neilv.jpg

Growing up as a kid, Neil loved the sweet sounds or Motown R&B. It wasn't until the age of 16 where Neil eventually discovered Detroit Techno at one of Detroit's underground raves in the mid 90's. His attention suddenly turned towards techno where it lead him into buying turntables. As quickly as his record selection grew, so did his reputation. He became an avid talent when it came to booking a hard techno DJ in Detroit. With almost 10 years under his belt, Neil has rocked dance floors from the east coast to the west. He has also performed at Detroit's legendary DEMF/Movement. He has played a long side with world renown talent like Adam Beyer, Joel Mull, Marco Carola, Matthew Dear, and many more.... After a brief stint in New York City, Neil was searching for something different, a more mature sound. Neil returned to Detroit with an artistic side of techno, something people were not expecting. Minimal techno as given him a new aspect in dj'ing. Extending sets is what he desires, it gives him the chance to take you through a mind fuck journey.

LOL....what the fuck is vocal techno....a couple of guys doing beatbox in the background while some girl hums a melody on top?

Better yet....if you all got them to eat some blotter first, you could call it acid techno.

If they were all from Detroit, it'd be Detroit techno.

If you put them all in full body casts....it would be hard techno.

And now to introduce the last (but definately not least) of the DTM crew.....JaMaul Redmond (a/k/a) Loner9, who will be performing a live PA during our 9 hours of absolute crazyness

http://www.mixedsignalsdc.com/images/loner9.jpg

Name: Ja'Maul Redmond

Code Name: Loner9

Place of Origins: Flint, MI, USA, Earth

Base of Operations: Charlotte, NC, USA, Earth

Known Affiliations: Activ-Analog Recordings, Dazeja/Mojool Media, Detroit Techno Militia: Dirty South

Not much is known about this operative. Normally seen in the Charlotte NC area but can be found working out of SC and also Detroit, this unit has been known to drop PA's that leave dancefloors devastated. Often feared by lesser DJ's and so-called "Live PA's", he has established a reputation as a performer that maintains the best elements of a DJ set (unpredictability, improvisation, and adjusting to the needs of the dancefloor) while maintaining the strictly live, no pre-recorded bullshit, that makes his music the stuff of legend.

Q: How do you describe your music?

It's definitely Detroit influenced but not soley. I guess it's best described as Minimal techno but with a lot of Electro and abstract qualities added.

Q: Who are your primary influences?

In EDM, it would Be Rob Hood, Jeff Mills, Drexcyia, Art Of Noise. In Popular Music, It's Prince, James Brown and Miles Davis.

Q: What prompted your move to the Queen City?

College and a better Working Economy.

Q:How does being on the outside of the Charlotte club scene affect your music?

I think it positively adds a bit of angst to my music. Everytime I find myself writing something "pretty" I think of how Charlotte ignores talent for glitz, then I go back to writting something dark.

Q: What future plans do you have for the Loner. 9 project?

To expose the music to areas outside of Charlotte, especially areas that may have more appreciation.

Now to introduce the lovely and talented Maya Amack:

http://www.mixedsignalsdc.com/images/mayapopart.jpg

You could say it started at birth, the love of rhythm. The beating of her mother's heart, set to a 68 bpm groove called life, seems to have set the mood for this analog play Maya casts with a box of dusty house records.

Born into a New York bohemian family of singing, instrument playing, and hungry hungry hippo tournaments she was exposed to a hip Partridge family style of life(Danny Bonaduce sold separately). Mom and Dad Amack being collectors of black vinyl discs with grooves on them that played music offered Maya her first lessons in the appreciation of "other" music and getting all the marbles with the pink hippo. An eclectic mix of genres would radiate through the home, with the likes of Beethoven, Phil Spector, the stylings of Aztec folk music as being raided by Hernando Cortez, and the always involved instructional Japanese albums (to which she built her own Honda).

At later ages as her music interest grew, she was taught piano, guitar, and some drums by her dad who wanted the neighbors to move away. Moving forward in time, like sands in an hour glass, music changed the days of our lives. When electronic music came to prominence in Maya's CD player; bands like Kraftwerk, 80's new wave, Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, and 808 state become of the beats of a dancing emotional nation. Pulled in by the pulsating baselines and hypnotic melodies, Maya could see something she wanted to do with music.

The outbreak happened for Maya during a New Year's Eve 2001 when she first tactually manipulated sounds with her hands. Since then she has had all the signs of being in contact with house music, the cold sweats, rummaging of dusty bins for hot vinyl (outfits), spending all monetary holdings in pursuit of said "sick" beats, and forced to scream out at inopportune times "drop me another Block rocking beat".

The bedroom DJ tag was not going to be the placard that Maya was content with holding, so she worked, and practiced, and danced, danced, danced, and Dee-jayed till she got the beat right and the transitions smooth. Bringing her take on dub, progressive, tech house she told Bob Vila how to build this house music garnering musical support from fellow DJ colleagues, board scenesters, and Indians from the Amazon rain forest to bring it to the next level. That happened when she played her first major gig at WMC 2003 at Lime Bar to gregarious house music fans.

Her success playing out procured her co-hosting responsibilities on "Bonus Beats" on Proton Radio, and also regular guest mixes on "B-sides", a music program involving the mood of a set along with the knowledge of sound. Currently, she hosts her own show on Proton called “Mindfunk”. She has played all over Florida and is starting to make her way to other cities and strip malls near you. More recently she moved to New York, where she is playing around town, and she has also traveled to other places such as Charlotte, NC, Boston and Mexico.

This city may have been built by rock n roll but Maya shows us that this house was built by a strong foundation of sultry symphonic beats dry walled to a crescendo. You can sit on the patio, out there, and listen to the soul of her early AM set melodies. You can sip that French cafe and try to remember that waiters name to be jolted back by the mid set transition. The bass becomes the tenor, driving the floor of feet around her. This is her high; these are the strings she plays you by. Next record on the platter and it’s time for a cigarette. If you can bottle time during Maya's set the energy captured could light cities. Reading the crowd and immersing yourself in the analog waves is not what a hobby is, but what passion breeds and what Maya’s love for music has become. Grins full of teeth catch the club lights and the person smiling the most is her, as this is where she wants to be, this is what she feels to want to become.......music.

Holy poop.

I don't know how I overlooked this thread but techno so close to me rocks my world. I live one metro stop away from this thing. I will drink tons of RBV's at Prefix and see if I can pull off going to this after. Hardcore hat will be on.

Actually T. Linder will be in town until Sunday too.

And at the little jello wrestling shindig on Saturday. Between that and the moonbounce, I can show him how we party D.C. stylee.

Then Sunday I can drag them out to the monuments and all that old stuff.

Last but not least, I introduce our very own Aaron Robinson:

http://www.mixedsignalsdc.com/images/aaron.jpg

In today's age of sub-sub-genre formulas, it is rare to find artists who bridge gaps between sounds. Washington, DC based dj Aaron Robinson is not one for the cookie cutter mold. Drawing from a wide array of musical influences, he deftly crafts sets that walk the line between current styles, pushing the edges of dancefloor sensibility and musican cohesion. Having spent his college years cutting his teeth in the Chicago scene, Aaron is now one of the most polished, experienced young dj's on the circuit. You can catch Aaron every third monday of the month at 6pm EST on protonradio.com, where he hosts the popular show "No Soap Radio". Give him a listen -- your ears will thank you later.

And that, my friends, is the talent you will be hearing on Friday night.

Four DJs from DTM, one doing a LIVE FUCKING PA (I can't wait for that shit!)

And two talented artists swinging on the minimal type for those late night hours :D

Reminder to all the Pre-Fix folks; If I can't get our afterparties flyers out today, you are all invited after Woody to come out and enjoy Red Bull, more techno, and some bo-delicious late night food.

And remember...breakfast opens at 6 a.m.

Mutha-fucking WOOT!
