I've officially never seen The Orb live, but I will say this: they have by far influence my music the most out of anything, from being in a band to djing. I plan on seeing them as many times as are possible in the cycles of the sun and moon.

i've seen them four times i think. the first time was at the OLD 9:30 club, on f street.
they had a live drummer and bassist for that one. that place was so small they couldn't
fit their big light show inside. the entire show was performed with a couple spots and some strobe lights.
it was packed as hell in there and the stage was tiny.

Not to be a dick or anything, but I saw the Orb two years ago and I thought it was a little, oh I don't know, uninteresting. So, when I saw all the hype being built here about their upcoming performance, I thought I would check them out in Miami. I got the same feeling. They opened up with "Come on Barbie, Let's go Party". While amusing, it set the tone for an other wise uneventful experience. Did I just get unlucky?

the orb live are admittedly a mixed bag. i'm curious about how their new 'kompakt'
sound will fit into their set, but i'm not expecting this show to be a life-changing event.
i think it's more about revisiting old friends than hearing the new stuff.

my ideal for the orb show would be for them to play a completely ambient set with
little or no beats at all. that's going waaaayyy back...

This is what I said on another board:

TRUE!!! It was everything the Carry On!! show wasn't- The entire crowd was rockin- they was groovin on stage like old fools and loving every minute of it...... at one point I turn to M and said- "damn!!! This is what I expected during WMC" music wise- one of the best shows I've been to. I guess if you were expecting some super crazy rig of equipment then you was let down but the portion of the show when they are up there together--- 100% LIVE!!!

Thomas did his thing- dropping records in the start- at one point he just sat down on the side of the stage- too funny....... then got back up and kicked it in to gear while his boy- was dancing in the crowd, drinking up a storm but when he was done doing that it was ORB!!! time for about an hour and half then it was LX time..... I was expecting the glitch- boom- bleep- glitch of WMC but instead he throws down some FREEEEEEEBIRD!! HAHA :p me and Sep was like (((( HAHA- that's for you BOB & Schoolteacher )))) hell YEAH!! Get R Dun :p then he played Moody Blues and Twinkle Little Star- a couple other crazy things--- for maybe 30-45 minutes or something like that...... not the ending I wanted but still very interesting none-the-less.

Great hanging out with you all again- Sep / M / Ghost & Your girl---- tell next time.

I have some video that will be loaded up later--- I can't speak for the past shows but I know this one and the WMC one and this one was 5000X'S better- Thank You ORB!!! for a great night of music- hell even M wanted the night to continue but I couldn't find Buzz :freak2: Do yourself a favor and check the show--- forget the past write ups- infact we are kicking around the idea of going to NYC to catch them 1 last time.....

PEACE

Yeah, this show was fucking tops. I was jumping around like a fool. Great tunes, great visuals, great atmosphere, great crowd. This and the Hacienda party at Five made this week one of my favorite weeks for dancing in quite a while.

the show was pretty good overall, but not for the reasons orb shows are usually good. when i walked
in, i was surprised that the stage only had a large table with dj gear and a laptop. only a simple square projection screen was mounted on the back wall. i have to admit i was more than a little bit worried that the old style elaborate sets were not present. where was the giant pyramid? the projection screens? the live visualist?
i guess a few years on island records spoiled me for a few years.

thomas fehlmann dj'd until 1040pm, playing a set of typically kompkat-style tracks, nicely building up the tempo and energy level. all the while, he was bobbing and dancing behind the decks, seemingly enjoying his own set. it was a nice opening act. the visuals were mostly comprised of slide stills taken from around the world-nothing terribly interesting, other than a few references to past song titles.

around showtime, alex paterson approached the table and fehlmann moved over to the laptop to much applause from the audience. by this time, the crowd had swelled to fill much of the club. i spotted lots of familiar faces throughout.

paterson assumed his usual role behind the decks, adding random ambient sounds and matching beats while fehlmann took to the laptop. their set began with about 15 minutes of ambient tracks, mostly from their last few years on kompakt records, each track blending into the next by use of silly ambient segues. the visuals at this point were changing according to mood of each track too. lots of nice ambiguous colors and shapes to add flavor to the space.

eventually, the duo began dipping into their more rhythmic work. they played cool harbour and many other singles released by kompakt. at this point i noticed that all these tracks sounded exactly like they sound on vinyl. this was kind of disappointing as orb shows in the past tend to take advantage of a looser interpretation the music. there was little of the musical sprawl as represented in the past. each track was tight and to the point. no 20 minute workouts tonight.

paterson and fehlmann were constantly winking, nodding and nudging each other on, while much of the crowd up front bobbed and danced in their own way. the place went a little nuts when an updated 'little fluffy clouds' dropped, but that could entirely depend on where you were standing. other than 'plateau' and 'outlands' (i think) and tiny excerpts from other tracks (sun electric's 'o'locco anyone?) , they kept to the newer catalogue of sounds and rhythms. this was a bit of a disappointment. i love the new stuff, but i also want to hear 'blue room' or ‘towers of dub’. strike one for the nostalgists.

the show ended with a contemporary rendition of ‘a huge ever growing...’ and nicely blended in to alex paterson’s closing dj set. what started out as an uptempo techno set quickly turned into an ibiza-style free-for-all with songs like ‘freebird’ (in a reggae style) to a subtle re-edit of doobie brothers’ ‘long train runnin’’. certainly miles away from most any dj set i’ve heard (or played) in a quite a while. simultaneously, thomas fehlmann was wandering around the main floor, much to the delight of many an orb fanboy who approached him hoping for a bit of the magic to wear off. it was fun while it lasted, but the last track ended at 1am and the lights went up.

so, it really was a decent show but i would have liked to hear a bit more variation on existing tracks as well as seen them with the enormous mixing console of past shows. i don’t mind running a show off a laptop, but there wasn’t much ‘show’ compared to that of previous appearances in the area. in the end, this show is what you made of it, and i had fun.
