So i traipse a lotta different genres, here's
my top 5 breaks picks for the mo. Some are
straight up old tho, heh. In no particular order:
5.infekto - miami treble [passenger]
This ones a bit older i do believe, but just the
right amounts of good funk to make me love it
the moment i heard it.
4.cut & run - no good/horny discoballs [white]
Really, No good is the only one of the two i'd
drop, its got big old C&R low end with a nice
filter to keep it going. Sounds a bit better than
outta space in my opinion, but nowhere near
the power tho. Horny is hilarious with chunks of
the pussy call in it. I thought it'd be chopped up
version of "horny", but its the good old call instead.
3.psilodump - YTA I & II [candymind]
I can never stop my big luv of all things glitched and
fun. Psilo has strayed further into the avant-amiga
sound, which is coo, but this throws it right back into
heavy action instead of sleepy lo-fi. Both use chunks
of old Dune tracks, but at variable energy. My fave (II)
has a big old orchestral breakdown towards the end,
that's all sorts of epic.
2.Timo Maas - Shifter (scanty mix) [perfecto]
Great stuff here, and again a bit older, i've been on
an unhealty scanty kick as of late, and this is one of
the more fun mixes. I can actually stand the shifter
vocal for a little bit, but usually it becomes annoying
and i'm out of the track before the halfway mark.
Still goodtimes.
1.Groove Armada - Superstylin' (School of Thought mix) [white]
I totally missed the boat on this one awhile ago, but
every so often it wanders back up into regular rotation.
I LOVELOVELOVE the original a shit-ton, and have to hold
back playing it anytime i'm in front of a crowd, heh.
This version tears out the bass in such a fun way tho,
does get a bit tiresome somedays tho, heh.

Time for some real reviews eh?
These are current top :redlight: tunes:
(Click to hear real audio samples)
1. GROOVE ALLEGIANCE>ROLANDS REVENGE/A GOOD DAY FOR SHIRKIN (http://www.releaserecords.com/RAM/16521.RAM)
>>>From the moment these tunes drop, everyone in the room is in for a treat. The old school vocals, rolling bongos, synth builds, vocal chops, hands in the air breakdowns...shit, I can go on. I was really impressed with this tune. Groove Allegiance can do no wrong right now, with kudos to Splank! records who have been pressing tons of great funk lately. Their tunes are simply timeless. Roland's revenge is a great early set tune for me. It's got the right ingredients to get everyone's attention, and is not so quiet to tell everyone that "it's ok...dance like a fool!" A Good day for shirkin is great for mixing. It doesn't simply drop out after a little intro, so you can really draw out the mix, keeping that bass and kick drum flowing. Later in the track there's some little beat and vocal stutters that chop up the flow a bit which is where the dj can tearing up some cuts. I'm all over this one.
2. DEF INC>ACID ROCK/STRIPPED DOWN FUNK (http://www.releaserecords.com/RAM/16422.RAM)
>>>I've never heard of Def Inc before, but I'll be looking out for future releases. Acid Rock has this wah guitar sample, and this sick ass digerdoo type sounding bass that really bounces around, with some more synthy/rock bass breakdowns. Once again, a bit of a funky vocal is in there, getting chopped up all over the place. Some scratches were put into this tune, which leads me to believe that it's begging for more. Not to mention all the little breaks in the flow throughout, making this record really fun to mix and play with. Stripped down Funk is a techy-er tune, with this bassline that is seriously low-end, going through some type of heavy filter sweep. The bottom end of that filter sweep is bound to be felt in your gut. The rest of the tune progresses with alot of energy. Will work really well to take things and peak em out. I'll definately be coming out of this tune with a breakdown to let people rest! Great distorted guitar on this one. Vocal filtered out. The last breakdown brings this track down and you can almost smell the fog machine.
3. DIVERTED>NEER DROPPAGE (http://www.releaserecords.com/RAM/16425.RAM)
>>>Holy crap is this a rave tune! Listen to this tune and you swear you're at Fever. Honest. The bassline is without a doubt going to make hairs vibrate. The synth is all distorted and sounds like it's analog (nordlead possibly). Great little vocal "hit it", "1,2,3"...just like mama's old tunes...hehe. The best thing about this tune is that it is minimal. Not too much going on, but it's so effective. Some stutters, chops, all that good stuff. Can't miss with this. I could play nothing but crappy bootlegs all night, play this tune, and still come out of it feeling like a champ. Sausage (intersting title...) is OK. It's got a nice rolling acid appegiation, with a real sharp beat. The breakdown is the best part of the tune. Diverted really does synth's well. They use these little parts and put them all together, building things up nicely. After the breakdown things get good. Expect acid squelches all over. The bassline doesn't do much though, so there is a need to have a mix going early in the tune. It's all about the double drop on this one.
4. PRECISION CUTS>NOW LET'S GET IT ON/SMARTBREAKS IN THE PLACE (http://www.releaserecords.com/RAM/16423.RAM)
>>>Now let's get it on is really one for the heads out there. I would place this dope shit at Delivery any day! This tune needs to come packaged with a blunt and shipped to every corner of the world. The beat is almost dubstep. Minimal, heavy bass, etc... Not your average breakbeat tune. Smartbreaks in the place has a hot female vocal that is really sort of hypnotising. Listening to this tune reminds me of the visual stuff that Kaboom used to do at Ultraworld shows. I'm all over the vibe on this one. It's funky, with some bongos, rolling bass, an old school ragga vocal (NOT OVERDONE), and a serious acid line that creeps in out of nowhere after the breakdown. This tune is surprisingly refreshing when the majority of stuff I hear in breaks tends towards soul-less electro. One of the most original tracks out lately.
5. ROB RENG>SHOOK ONE (http://www.streetwisemusic.co.uk/stream/135972.ram)
>>>This tune's been out for a few on promo from West records. Daniella Downs has been raving over this one for at least 2 recent charts as well. I apologize for the short crappy sample, but it's the only one I could find. This one's all about the bassline, with kicks in right off the bat. The bass is squelchy but funky. The drums are crisp and clean. It's almost a house tune, but with that breaks energy. Some nice synth sweeps make this a rave tune. One for the big room. The vocal is HOT. I really like the 1st breakdown, with a shuffling bass and filtered hi-hat. The other side of this promo features a hyper remix of Zero Gravity Jive. I'm not feeling it, but those into the techy stuff definately will. There's alot going on with it, and Hyper's superb production.
