Do you like colorful flyers?
Simple flyers?
Which printing companies have the best prices?
Is there a need for paper flyer or do you think e-flyer do the trick??

I have one really simple rule:
I won't take a flyer if it won't fit in my pocket. Period.

none of those... They either end up in the trash or on the ground outside my car.

God ive been arguing this debate for quite sometime it seems. For me if its an all local party I really dont see the need for flyers, most the people who know the djs will already know about the party. Now if there is a decent headliner then yeah a flyer is needed. But if the headliner is someone who is mostly known only to promoters and djs then once again e-flyers will cover that group, your average joe schmoe isnt going to know the person reguardless.
Now when it comes to flyers I think 4x3 do the trick, most people can fit them in their pocket and unless you have 12+ djs you should have plenty of room to convey the djs you are going to have.
As for flyer design, I try to use a theme base and go from there, but I prefer loud colorful flyers, something that is going to grab a persons attention from far away enough that they will want to pick it up and see what else is on there.
As for bios and dj pics unless you are making large flyers there really isnt a need for these, its better to post a web address for those truly interested in finding out more about the performers. But these are my basic guidelines when it comes to what Im looking for when I go to get flyers designed.

If you guys need flyers designed I have a great person who does my flyer work for me, she's really fast and with printing I go with Grovetech printing here in Kensington, they can actually have the flyers for you next day at a relatively low price think it was 130 for 5000 4x3.

any of LOGO's work for the most part, i think he's the only cat that makes decent fliers nowadays.
the EXBC guys also make cool fliers when they have a theme
and the old buzzlife fliers from the 90's by airline industries were the shit. They just had a sharpness to them and some of them were innovative in the fact that they had some sort of concept to them.
Remember the buzz flier that shows a guy walking through dc metro stations and the like with a briefcase, and at the end of the pictures the case opened up and had some buzz related material in it?
that shit was cool.

C. Devin Byrnes is the designer. He is mad talented.

If it looks like it was created w/ Fisher Price "My First Computer Illustrating Program" I'll probably never attend the party.
A sharp, graphically intelligent and easy to read flyer often ends up in a flyer collection I have, whether or not I make it to the party. The stuff LOGO posted (minus the club one stuff) is exactly what I'm talking about. I really like the old buzz/cubik flyers, but oftem times feel like they bombard w/ too much information (i.e. -- reading the flyer becomes homework)

basically.
and don't put flyers on windshields.
I think it's fun to leave them there and occasionally turn my wipers on when I'm going 60mph to watch them fly off.

a) the bigger the better
b) i like old rave designs. they were creative.
c) both is preferable, but bios at least
d) the more colorful the better unless a creative design is in place that is not.
im a fan of the rave, what do you want?
Guess I ought to toss in my $.02.
First, I'd like to thank those of you who mentioned me and my designs.
I love getting feedback—especially when it's positive. Helps me stay fresh.
My philosophy is thus:
Given that flyers are a disposable advertising medium, the trick is to draw the viewer's attention and hit them over the head with the necessary information as easily as possible.
I typically try to accomplish both goals by doing a colorful, flashy flyer front and a relatively simple (but not boring) back. There's no need for crazy, illegible fonts on the back, especially when there's a lot of copy.
Think about it: When flyers are displayed at record shops, each flyer is vying for space amidst a sea of colorful designs. It only stands to reason that the ones that "pop" are the ones that are going to be taken.
Also, a lot of times, people who are given flyers (or who remove them from their cars) are tired from the night, drunk, or...otherwise not in the right frame of mind to pay attention to the information on a flyer. That makes it even more important that the flyer be unique, colorful, and SIMPLE to understand.
I also believe that headliner and local flyers should be treated no differently. The goal of the flyer is to get people to come out to the party. If the DJs are locals, and relatively unheard of, it becomes that much more critical that the flyer comes across as completely top-notch. This adds a degree of importance to the party, and, regardless of the fact that the DJs are no-names, some people will come because of the flyer itself.
If someone hands me a flyer that's photocopied onto colored paper, fugeddabodit...it's in the trash, no matter what the event is. If someone hands me a slick, professional looking, WELL-DESIGNED flyer, regardless of who's headlining, I'll consider going, but I will DEFINITELY keep the flyer.
Another thing to remember is that some people collect flyers. I used to, regardless of whether or not I ended up going to the party. I've got bags and BAGS of flyers from all sorts of events throughout the years, especially the Airline Industries BUZZ flyers. These people who collect the flyers will start to seek out flyers for certain clubs/parties and by certain designers. Even if they don't come to all the events, they display the flyers, or share them with their friends, thereby spreading the word about the events. Yet another reason to really push the creative envelope with flyer design.
sorry so verbose

Oh, and as for printers, Grove Printing (http://groveprinting.com/) in Kensington and JPEG Graphics (http://jpeggraphics.com) in FLA are right on the money.
Even though they're in FLA, I tend to lean more towards JPEG because they're one of the only *cheap* printers that still offer UV coating (makes the flyer really slick and feel like plastic).
Plus they're color is better than Grove's.
Grove is OK. They're cheap, they're quick, they're local, and you can avoid shipping charges by dropping by the shop to pick up your order.
However, the color is never quite right, and I've had a few incidents with colors running.
Grove is sort of hit-or-miss.

eric and i always really enjoyed doing flyers for our show, it just became too much of a drain on our time to come up with something constantly week after week. we're slowly trying to create some more, but really haven't gotten consistent with it in awhile.
our approach with the flyers was mostly just to make people laugh. we are both very amateur designers (eric definitely a little more skilled than myself), so we just wanted something that would get peoples attention by making them think about it or making them laugh at it. they're generally pretty tongue-in-cheek. it really turned out pretty well, cause it managed to get our show known on lots of out of state messageboards which probably otherwise never would have taken notice of our spam. i actually met someone at the WMC last year who knew my name because of the flyers.
anyway, here's some examples so you get what i'm getting at.

evecomm is still in the game?
Haven't seen any of his flyers in years, and the website is still under construction.
Another great designer was the late Todd Baldwin (pigeonhole design—1/2 of the old airline industries). He took over the BUZZ and cübik stuff after airline was dismantled.
He was well know for this particular style:

There was a book printed a few years back that collected olf fliers from NY and over-seas... It organized them by various styles and themes... I remember seeing one of my first Buzz fliers in i, actually... demmit, i'm going to have to find that book now...
Honestly, it's hard to say what I -like-... Graphic styles are constantly evolving and changing... I always see something new, or an idea revamped, that comes across as sexy or striking or SOMETHING. I'm one of those people who seems to be ridiculously visual... If I see something I like, I'll keep it around as a visual reference for the future...in a book or on a wall...I've been know to take fliers, put them through a specific process involving gel medium, and turn them into clothing or hats...just because there was something, just -something-, about them....
I'm also a pack rat, for christ's sake.
There is, however, something specific that I don't like: DO NOT cram your sexy, made-ip face on my flier. I don't care if your a female -OR- male D.J. You're not a pop star... I don't care how hot you are. I may go to your $40 party because I like your music, but not because your skinny blonde ass is in stripper heels and boob pasties. (ANYONE who knows, or at least pays attention to, fliers)...knows exactly what I'm talking about....

I love this flyer because it's fun and clean. It reminds me of old school cardboard stock flier I used to get back in the day.
evecommunications (Jefferson Liu) is still around. He's designs the M3/Five flyers and does work for the corporate world.
RIP todd baldwin.
Most definitely.

my fave flyers were the old sunday night sessions flyers.
they started with more of a comic book theme....and then they had this series with this mad professor and every week was a new installment (which never finished but oh well.)
but my 3 fave flyers of all time came later. one was a plain white background and in big black letters it said I <3 DC JUNGLE. (the heart was red.)
the 2'nd one was from the first time i played there. the flyer was a 4 pack of condoms. each individual condom said "sunday night sessions" where the brand name was on the front, and on the back it had all of the party info for the week. and it looked JUST LIKE condoms....like somebody had just scanned a pack of trojans or something. (they were even perferated between each one!!)
and the last one was actually just a teaser flyer for the month above. going with the condom theme, these ones looked just like blunts, and they said SNS on the little red tape at the top. those were great, 'cause when brianna was handing them out, she actually kept them in a box of phillys.....
*sigh*
memories.
