Alright.
My kinda thread.

OK, I know a number of you have seen a lot of these designs before, but since we now have a legitimate thread dedicated to creative work, I figured I would post them again.

All of this work was done in Adobe Illustrator.
And most of it is painstakingly detailed.
Even the designs that resemble existing work by other artists (Friday the 13th flyer, Sugar Hill Gang, etc.) were completely redrawn in Illustrator.

Since I am submitting these designs for your critique, I fully understand that some of you will not like what you see.
Don't worry. I'm a graphic designer, and I'm used to having my work critiqued.
So comment away.
However, I will ask that if you critique any of my work negatively, please do so in an intelligent and constructive way, and please provide a basis for your opinion.
"I hate it," or "Ugh...I don't like the color green," are not valid critiques, and will be ignored.

To start, here are some flyer designs I did for Mosaic in Baltimore.
When I was brought on to handle their creative work, I was given full creative license except for one request: Make them sexy, like the artwork for the Naked Music label.
So I focused mainly on women, because, lets face it...women are sexy.
But I did so in a non-demeaning way.

A folded flyer for Mosaic's special masquerade party, A Midsummer Night's Dream.
These JPEGs represent the front, back, and inside of the card.
The inside is really tiny here due to stupid PhotoBucket image size rules.

These next two are flyers for Good People Productions for private events at Club One in B-More.
They were both designed to also be used as inserts for mix CDs that would be given out on the nights of the parties.
The first was supposed to mimic the record sleeve art from the Sugar Hill Gang - Rapper's Delight.
The second was an adaptation of the radio photo on the cover of LL Cool J's - Radio album.
Unfortunately, design #2 was scrapped in a BS political move...after I had finished the HIGHLY DETAILED artwork. This took many, many hours of my time to make the illustration as photo realistic as possible, and I was rightfully pissed.
It remains as a portfolio piece.

I plan on redoing this one at some point...I would like to make the figure in the foregound more dynamic and distinct.
He'll still be a Playskool person, but more animated.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/atomicvibe/el-gato.jpg
This one is called El Gato Infierno (Hellcat).
I had an idea one day that I could intersect a series of ovoid shapes, and the resulting shapes could form an abstract cat head.
Why a cat head? I have no idea. It just came to me.
But I thought it would look cool printed on a black t-shirt.

Thanks.
And your flyer looks great.
Is that a digital painting done in, say, Painter, with a Wacom tablet, or a real painting that you scanned?
Either way, it's nicely done.
It's very organic.

HA!
Graphic design is my profession, so it behooves me to be good at what I do and know the software in and out.
All of this stuff I posted represents work that was done under my freelance guise, eyedesign.
Unfortunately, the work I do at my regular 9–5 design job is not as exciting, nor is it as creatively stimulating. But, it pays the bills, and it's a regular gig.
As for paying me to design a CD cover for you, I would absolutely love to help you out, but at this particular point in time, I am not taking on any more work.
But send me a PM with all your info in it, and when things calm down a bit, I'll be in touch.

well shit, no wonder your name is "logo."
*DING!*
You are correct, ma'am.
My name also has a deeper meaning, which is sort of a satirical stab at the superstar DJ complex.
Along with this superstar mentality comes a certain level of "brand" recognition.
These DJs have recognizable names (their brand), and some even have logos.
My name, LOGO, is a logo.
Esentially, I am saying, "I am a logo."
I am the physical embodiment of a marketable brand.
Again, it's all satirical.

I totally dig those T-Shirt designs. i would wear the "o-no" one.
HA!
Yeah, that's my fave, too.
I was on a Threadless.com kick for a while, and while I had submitted "Divergent" and "El Gato Infierno," I had not gotten around to submitting "O-NO."
But, from my experiences with Threadless, it's more of a popularity contest than anything.
The more people you con into voting highly for your shirt, the more chance you have of winning.
I started getting frustrated, because I was seeing CRAP (and I DO mean CRAP) shirts getting all sorts of high scores.
So, perhaps I'll submit O-NO someday.
Or maybe I'll just get a bunch printed and sell them myself.

awesome work! I'd totally get one of these shirts. I'd like to do graphic design stuff, but I made sever critical errors in my schooling that led me down a rather boring engineer beset path. perhaps I can throw it in revers or something.

in fact, the most fun I had at work was when my boss gave me a title sheet and told me to make it look good. I thought it looked "banging", but he just wanted some drop shadows on the boxes or something. engineers like ugly things I guess.

Stop bullshitting in here and get those TPS reports done pronto!
Actually, my day job is at a public health communications/social marketing company.
We're a government contractor with clients such as NIH, CDC, USDA, Department of Health and Human Services, among others.
I'd say about 85% of the shit I do on a daily basis is stuff a mildly trained chimp could bang out.
We work with a lot of government clients who consider Creatives as little more than pretty picture machines.
A lot of them are not interested in real creative strategy or even target audience research.
Our favorite joke about these douchebags is that they are "Couldja just" clients, meaning that when we present work to them, they return with comments like, "Well, the red is OK, but couldja just make it grey? Our boss LOVES grey."

Meanwhile, it was red because it was an apple.

Definitely not what I need to satisfy my creative hunger.
Thus, I'm usually bored and surfing the Board.
Every once in a while, projects will come along that get me excited about what I do again, but those are few and far between.
That's why I freelance (when I can).
I get to do projects like what's posted above, typically with complete autonomy.

i've said it once and i'll say it again, the mosaic flyers are ridiculously hot.

What program do you use for the vector drawings of the girls in your mosaic fliers?
All of the work presented here is done in Adobe Illustrator 10.
In some instances, I'll find a reference photo I like, and use it as a basis for my illustration. Then I painstakingly draw the photo as a vector illustration, tweaking and manipulating it, adding my own unique style.
Typically I search through royalty free stock photography, but eventually, I would love to shoot my subjects myself, then illustrate from my own photos.

Here's an example of this particular process.

This illustration...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/atomicvibe/flyer-aug05-front-lg.jpg

...started with this photo
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/atomicvibe/brxbxp134861.jpg

As you can see, the basic structure of the girl has remained the same, but I have completely exaggerated her features (eyes, nose and lips, and obviously hair) to make her slightly cartoonish and drop-dead sexAY.

I remember getting the midsummer night's dream flyer and was really really sweatin it, especially the way you worked the "crown" design. I wish I still had that one. Excellent use of type and color; while I love the look of a clean sanserif sometimes it really gets overused, especially in club flyers. Excellent job.

I am a huge fan of the first Mosaic flyer as well. I understand your client's immediate inclination to use women whenever they're going for a "sexy" look, so I applaud you for fulfilling that request and not going down the tired old T&A route.

I really like your style. I need to start getting back into Illustrator myself, I'm starting to miss those clean lines and vibrant colors. :)

I remember getting the midsummer night's dream flyer and was really really sweatin it, especially the way you worked the "crown" design. I wish I still had that one.
I have a few extras laying around.
I can send you one, if you want.
PM me your vitals.

Excellent use of type and color; while I love the look of a clean sanserif sometimes it really gets overused, especially in club flyers. Excellent job.
I often go for something very clean and plain, like Helvetica or Chalet (very similar, but more "mod" looking) for the flyer back text, since, typically, there's a LOT of information that you want people to actually read back there.
The flyer front is typically fair game for whatever.
With Midsummer, I wanted to give it a "Neo-Baroque" feel, so I studied a lot of Baroque architecture.
The "crown" as you call it is supposed to mimic the ornate detail of a Baroque building front or iron gate.
Since I felt that a sans serif font would detract from this overall feel, I decided to use serif fonts throughout.

Where did you get the font for STRUT and Midsummer?
Hmm...the font for STRUT was some random hack font that I had to "fix" greatly.
That's the problem with downloadable free fonts...they're free for a reason: most of them suck.
However, I chose that one because I liked the curvy letterforms.
I just had to really clean it up before using it.
Also, I knew I was going to be designing huge banners to go on stage, so the STRUT logo had to look sharp.

As for the Midsummer font, it's called Mason, and is a classic Emigre font.
Matrix—another Emigre font—was used for the smaller body copy.

As you can see, the basic structure of the girl has remained the same, but I have completely exaggerated her features (eyes, nose and lips, and obviously hair) to make her slightly cartoonish and drop-dead sexAY.

I have a few extras laying around.
I can send you one, if you want.
PM me your vitals.

Matrix—another Emigre font—was used for the smaller body copy.

thanks for the info. I adore Chalet, it's made by House Industries (for those that don't know), which is based in Delaware. I love House Industries. They came to my high school graphics class in Wilmington to show us their work, and they completely blew my little mind. I'm surprised to see they still maintain the retro 40's/60's style that they orginally had.

I think its awesome that they also have an in-house fine artist who actually paints a lot of their graphic art and posters.

HA!
When things calm down for me, I may do this.
I'd like to start shooting my own subjects rather than use stock photography.

...Chalet, it's made by House Industries...
Great type house, right there.
House and Emigre are my all time faves.

Thankyaverymuch.

Honestly, I, too, am stuck doing boring design for government clients on a daily basis.
I'd say roughly 85% of what I do at my job is garbage. Sometimes I get some cool projects, but those are sporadic.
These examples I posted represent work I have done under my freelance guise, eyedesign.
When I do freelance work, I seek out clients that will allow the repressed creative juggernaut within me to come out and kick some good design up that ass.
