Which reminds me Emma - we should get together sometime soon to get that mural/wall art/whatever it was done!

I have a nice big open space on the wall that's just begging "fix me, Emma - fix me!"

Believe me, it's on my list of stuff to do. In fact, I will relish the chance to meet up and hash out a plan for some artwork for ya, because it would mean I have time to breathe...Right now it's hard to fit in anything other than work, commuting to and from work, and sometimes getting to sleep in between...13-18 billable hours per day isn't very good for mixing with a 'life'! Only reason I'm not at the office this whole weekend is that I'm not in DC to begin with (thank goodness). Alas, we shall figure something out :raveon:

no no no...that's just overkill. There's only so much sweetness that one should take in before noon. And the maple syrup on top does JUST FINE to complete the square.

the person I made that for tries to live by the quote that chopped up and meanders across the paper, she tries to live by it she says. that's why I put his pic under his sig. if you notice where it says "anyone with a dream" it has martin luther king jr underneath it. I

oh, I remember this thread. I made some stuff for my art 101 class and I'd lie to share, if I may.

this was the first problem we were issued. we had to devlop a small thumbnail and create a bigger design out of it by rotating it, overlapping it and whatnot. I don't have the small thumbnail, but this is the end product. it's made of cut and pasted paper.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2012/1821250214_b2d81677c8.jpg

this is the second problem we were given. we were to take a 6" plant cutting and using the sun or other strong light source trace the outline of a sheet of paper and color it with india ink. I cut a piece of holly because I like spiky things

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2351/1821250782_d8e6c049ef.jpg

this is the third problem we were given, and it ties into the secong and forth problems as well. after we finished the second problem we had to copy it and cut 2" squares out of the original. we then took those squares and made a design out of them. I don't think I did so well on this one.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2154/1820412239_9ac80cefe9.jpg

the forth problem involved taking to left over pieces we cut out during problem 3 and copt them numerous times and make an repeat pattern. I came up with these two. I like shaping the paper :D

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2154/1820412687_1f5945c22e.jpg

that's what I've done so far. now I am working on value scales. we need to cut those bloc into shapes and place them in order. I'd love to make cloud shapes for the black to white, but that might be a bit too hard.

I just finished three problems tonight.

this on is a value study. we were to take a color painting and renders it's values in gray scale. the original is on the right. this on is "ok" but I don't think I got it quite right.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2158/1979046682_0a02bcf105.jpg

These are more value studies. We made two sets of 20 4" squares and on one of them we went from black to white and on the other one we did the same thing, but with red.

I had worked on this a while ago and all I had to do tonight was cut them into shapes and glue into place. This was complicated however, when my original set of painted value squares went missing. MISSING! I had to recreate them and basically do the two whole problems from scratch. I was working since 6:00 on them all the way till 1:00. oi :hangover:

so if it looks like they were rushed, they were. they are many gaps. I like the layout though

Heh, I got a bit carried away. the problem was to make a color wheel, but also orginize the design to show simultanious contrast. When I was laying out my design I got a bit crazy with the cheese whiz and ended up making 4 levels of that.

If you look, there are 4 concentric hexagonial bands and each one of those is a color wheel. but I rotated their order by one...uh, box in each band. The triangular space created between the bands are filled with each colors compliment thereby showing the contrast.

Any other color systems were created purely by accident.

decoy
2007-11-30, 11:42 AM
But now that I look at it, the innermost hexagonal band doesn't touch the others like the other three do.

Maybe I should have spent more time in the design phase.

1, 10 and 13 are my favorites. They have interesting content, well cropped and grab my attention the most. I'm not sure what the weather was like outside today, but it *looks* like you missed or beat dusk by a bit, and that's prime time for grabbing a broader color range in the sky.

For the shot you kept trying to get, the last attempt shown is my favorite, the main thing tha bothers me is the fact the Horizon line is noticably off angle, and my eyes keep shooting right to it.

sassypance
2008-02-04, 08:38 PM
Yeah, I was on a patch of hilly long grass that was hard to find enough stability to stand level on so I finally just sat down.

It's been raining all day, so not only was it dusk, but there were storm clouds out.

Also I took a lot of pictures of trees against the sky because I need some nature inspired textures to change the opacity on for the idea I have in my head.

Don Miguel Lush

kristin, let me give you some criticism....

picture number 1. I think it is a really cool shot however my first reaction was the extremely centered horizon line. it disrupts the image, cuts in half, and draws unnecessary attention. Aside from that, i love the contrast, specifically under the dock, with the dark shadows. I'd have loved to see more grass, thus placing the horizon line higher and giving the picture more balance.

#2. This picture is almost perfect. i love the asymmetry with the extension on the upper right, and the boat on the left, cutting the perfect balance. It could use a little bit higher contrast as some grays are kinda muddy, but it has a good range overall. My only complain.... it's tilted. the horizon line is not straight and the general composition of the picture (with such a strong vertical element on the middle) calls for a perpendicular horizon IMHO.

#3 Similar to the one above. I actually like #2 better as the little extension on the upper right actually comes out of frame, thus avoiding an unnecessary framing.

#4 One of my favorites. Strong contrast, the green is pure awesome, and the diagonal composition makes it really strong. :star:

#5 This one, i feel it's to heavy handed on strong tones and darker shades. I'd like to see more whites or lighter tones.

#6 see comment for #3. also, i feel like the horizon line is too close to the center of the picture. remember your rule of 3rds :D

#7 & # 8 ^^^^^^

#9. Ok although this one also has a very centered horizon line, the edge of the dock behind it creates a nice triangular element which is contrasted with the dark thick wood block next to it. Such juxtaposition takes importance away from the cutting middle line and becomes less distracting. Nice one!!!!

#10 I think this picture would be fucking kickass if the horizon line would be somewhere along the upper 3rd of the image. I love the framing created by the wood block on the right, making it look almost like looking through a hole!

#11 I love this picture. I feel it's a bit dark, but i love how you can only see the reflection of the trees, instead of the actual ones, the framing by the edge of the water and the dock, perfectly placed off-balance, gives a very nice framing!

#12 I feel this image is a bit weaker than a lot of the other ones you have. It lacks contrast and has a very distracting empty space on the lower right corner. It drags the image down. I like the repetition of the diagonal lines with the wood blocks intersecting, but it looks a bit "snap shot"....

#13 I think here you nailed a way stronger composition trying to get that far away horizon mixed with the dock. The colors feel a bit pale and muddy, as there is not enough contrast IMO.

#14 I actually love this one. I think there is a good sense of contrast and line work. The lines are strongly defined and there is enough information in all the quadrants of the image.

Ok, gotta go for a bit, but i'll comment on the rest of them later!
Overall, good work. I like your scenery, and your choice of views. I feel like your main issue right now could be getting a good sense of balance without having and overly distracting horizon line. You don't want to have a very strong cutting line running straight thru the middle of your image when you are trying to nail such a balanced peaceful shot. It looks disturbing. Besides from that i really really enjoyed your pix!!!!!!

Thanks for the criticism Miguel. None of the shots have been Photoshop'd yet or cropped for composition and the color balance is untouched. These are for a graphic design project, meaning I'm going to be taking elements from these photos, not the entire photo. I'm going to be changing the opacity on most of these to make them barely noticeable (or so I think, that's the mental image I have at this point for my grand scheme). I really wasn't working to get the photography rules down, I just needed to capture some elements in the picture and it was by choice that I shot the photos with at least some sort of minimal knowledge that I possess in the realm of photography. It makes me happy to hear that a good number of these would be feasible for that purpose though. :)

With the right adjustments to the highlights/shadows, this can come out really dramatic:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b242/sassypance/swanpoint_2_08/HPIM0435.jpg

This one is also great composure. Would be nice to see a little more depth of field, but I'm guessing you were limited by the camera you were using.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b242/sassypance/swanpoint_2_08/HPIM0446.jpg

Another good one. Very minor adjustments needed on this for the highlights/shadows.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b242/sassypance/swanpoint_2_08/HPIM0463.jpg

This one is probably the best of the dock where you are trying to get that perspective. Just crop it a little and rotate it so it looks level and centered.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b242/sassypance/swanpoint_2_08/HPIM0433.jpg

I won't go into discussing every picture unless you want me to. I noticed a bunch of them look blurry because they were handheld in dim lighting. I would recommend using a tripod next time to get clear pictures that don't suffer from motion blur.

Tripods can be a bit of a bitch to deal with, which is why I stumbled upon it.

I have a tripod that's adjustable with it's legs, but one always seems to not want to collapse right. Or it'll drop at the worst time. And I usually end up wanting to smash it. But if you don't deal with a collapsing tripod, you have to lug around some huge thing - they're perfect for studio work, but traveling on the fly, they just piss me off.

It's a good idea, I'm just not that into photography at the moment to want to problem solve outside of Photoshop/Illustrator and what not. I'll remember this next semester when I delve into traditional photography more though.

You're going to love Traditional photography. Darkroom work is *so* beyond awesome.

If you need a nice 35mm for classes, you can borrow mine. I have a Canon Rebel T2, and since I mostly rely on Digital because I don't have access to a darkroom at the moment, it doesn't see much use these days.

I have a Hakuba CT-8 for easy carrying. It is very small and light and works well for most things.

SWEET. My dad has several lenses for his old Canon which I thought would be interesting to use, but something a little more up-to-date would be nice to try as well. I'll definitely keep that in mind.

I think I'm going to still stick to MacGuyver style Tripod work. It's faster on the drawl, I don't feel like a retarded tourist while doing Urban shots, and it's overall better for my blood pressure. :D

Yeah, just let me know. I bought it two years ago, and it's a damn good camera. I only have a few filters for it at the moment and the stock lens, but it'll be more than enough to get you through Intro to Photography.

You might want to check out Glen Echo Park. They have darkrooms available to the public:

Not in DC.

:D

I'll eventually find someone selling an Enlarger on the cheap, and pick up the rest of the supplies piece by piece.

Gestalt psychology (also Gestalt of the Berlin School) is a theory of mind and brain that proposes that the operational principle of the brain is holistic, parallel, and analog, with self-organizing tendencies; or, that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

The Gestalt effect refers to the form-forming capability of our senses, particularly with respect to the visual recognition of figures and whole forms instead of just a collection of simple lines and curves.

Spray paint on canvas emphasizing two motifs and gestalt principles. A palette knife was used for cutting into the canvas and also for spattering.

**Please excuse the poor quality of the photograph, the textures are hardly apparent and the spray paint is a gloss.

In fact, hell, if anyone knows what the hell I can do to fix this issue, please school me.

Graphic Design Logo Project

My professor said to just do something simple and fun since she had to cut down the class time involved on this project. I just used my Internet handle and incorporated my love for street art in the font and then some artistic elements such as a watercolor brush and ink spatter to express my artistic nature. Everything is done in Adobe Illustrator CS3.

I especially like the background of the type, so very colorful.

Yeah I stumbled upon it in the Color Swatches palette and I had never used any of those effects before so I just started sampling through them and found it. Even though it's ridiculously colorful, I still don't think it's overbearing, and I think it's pretty legible. This is what happens when I'm made to do every project in black and white for half a semester though LOL

I'm noticing that when it's scaled down, the loss of color information gets to be extremely noticeable so it's a shame that I'm going to have to do a solid color inside.

The links were bad in the first place since this thread has been going for years now. I just went through and edited the hell out of everything today. I'm also dwindling down the things I care to share aka pieces that are worthwhile.

It really does. I'm going to re-shoot the pictures I've taken since some of the pieces are matted and framed now and since I've been given tips on how to counteract any glares because of glossy paint or other elements. Hopefully it works out better and thank you again. :)
