View Full Version : phace - the next master of the "vintage" virus sound?

i think so .

i don't think he's biting at all, the sound he's making is *like* old virus...but with a twist that i had been hoping somebody would one day try to pull off.

his subtitles EP (now on promo) is ridiculous. it's been a while since i haven't been able to pick a "stand out" track off of an EP from 1 producer.

Phace - Now! (http://redeyerecords.co.uk/sounds/cat7308.asf)
Phace - Vitamin P (http://redeyerecords.co.uk/sounds/cat7308b.asf)
Phace - Species (http://redeyerecords.co.uk/sounds/cat7308c.asf)
Phace (ft. Noisia + Mayhem) - Oceans of Emptiness (http://redeyerecords.co.uk/sounds/cat7308d.asf)

minimal sounds, but effective as fuck.

im undecided on this one.

generally speaking, i love phace and already own some tunes and all that.. but i think this ep is kind of disappointing me. the only thing i really feel off it is oceans of emptiness (which was done by a number of other people with phace, i dont know why theyre not getting credited anywhere).

im reserving judgment though. these are the kind of tunes you need to hear on a rig before you really have an idea what they're all about.

whether or not i think the ep is solid though, i totally love what phace is doing regardless, and expect to hear a lot of great shit out of him.

i'll buy it.

so THAT'S why i can hear the sounds mayhem uses in every tune he's ever done (in 'oceans of emptiness').

like, duh.

yeah now see hot rock i'm totally all about. that tune is a bit more aggro though, while still retaining the neuro grooviness.

you love my technical terms.

Not to say it's bad per se, but why would I play Vitamin P when I could play Kridan? If these tunes had come out five to seven years ago, they'd probably be classic, but they just strike me as incredibly derivative. I guess if you got into dnb recently and don't own old Virus and the like, these would be more appealing, but I couldn't justify picking these up.

i partially agree, but phace is a relatively new producer & if they're producing stuff like this now...one can only imagine what they'll sound like as they get more releases under their belt.

i'm just happy to see stuff like this (and even the new hardware tunes from teebee & prolix etc) is surfacing again.

i think that logic is pretty strange. i follow you, but, if you like the way this sounds, then you should pick it up, if you don't then you probably shouldnt pick it up.
i dont see why you would feel the need to get hung up on whether it seems "incredibly derivative" or not.
i guess its just kinda boring to you, b/c you've heard this type of sound before in the past?
but even so, don't you like that type of sound?

nice one on posting these up. i've been meaning to check out the clips for this ep for a bit now.
i'm loving it. especially Now!
this is definitely going on my spreadsheet with a high "to buy" rating on it. :D

Well, yeah, I like the sound, but it sounds like something I already have. Why spend money on that when I could buy something that doesn't sound like something I have. I'm not saying I don't like it or wouldn't like hearing it out or in a mix, just that given the tunes I already have, I wouldn't actively seek it out. If I felt like it was an improvement on the older tunes then maybe I would, but I don't.

To me one of the most interesting aspects of dnb is how creative and original people can be given a very rigid structure and framework for tunes. Thusly, if something is derivative I'm not going to be as into it.

Liftedtrance
2005-08-05, 02:52 PM
hmm, i understand. :werd:

you might have to forgive me, i've been spinning dnb for less than a year, so a lot of that type of sound is "relatively" new to me. and exciting and enjoyable too :D

syringe was released twice. it was mispressed on the original white label socom ep, and slapped on the unmixed Creeps 2CD.

the vinyl being a bit on the rare tip, this is why i said i wish i had it on vinyl.
