how did every dj get the same record, and rinse it the same way, every time? what happened to the nights when you would actually hear leftfield, trip hop and (OMFG) JUNGLE?!?
i just dont get turned on anymore when I hear the same anthems risned the same way, everywhere I go, anywhere in the US.
the mixing formula needs to die as well. Bringing in the beat on the same count gets tired. and no one double drops anymore.
DJ's, check yourself and take a look at why you mix and collect vinyl. You can say its "all about the music" but your mix tells the truth.

How often do you come out? People like Deinfamous, Illeffect and Godfather Sage do shit like this all the time at Cubik, at Japone, on EXBC, and just about everywhere else they play.
And what do someone's mixing abilities have to do with how passionate they are about their music? I know people that live, eat, sleep and breathe jungle but couldn't mix soap with water.

Ok, now that's funny.
Seriously though... I do agree that there are a LOT of people out there who aren't pushing boundaries. I don't see it as a bad thing, necessarily... I mean, if you love whatever form of dnb and you love mixing but you're simply not blessed with any kind of DJing abilities, it's not a crime to buy decks and vinyl and do what you love. I say more power to em.
Then of course, I find myself reminiscing of Starscape a few years ago... I think 'Twist EM Out' was played by 5 different dnb DJs, and rewound 3 times...:nixo:

I agree with you. there needs to be more music. it cant be all about breaks, house and d&b. there's more to life than chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream...the same can be said for the music.
If there was a dj that decided to take the risk to play gabber in this area (balt / dc), i think people would jump on it. i'm not sure why...i just have that feeling.
that's really the main reason as to why i not only push my sound....but i push other sounds that i think are fresh and interesting. There have been loads of people that have downloaded DanGee & JohnAsk's mix from Sonar. (http://www.joenice.net/DSS_Sonar.mp3)...it's dub and you dont always hear that all the time.
FWIW - Shade's "Circadian Rhythm" mix, DanGee & JohnAsk's dub set and Godfather Sage's 2 disc mashup @ Sonar are the three best mixes i've heard all year. Give them a listen...you'll hear why.

no offense man, but complaining about it really isn't gonna do anything.
i've met you before, and you seem like a really cool cat whos into cool music, so this isn't meant to be an attack, or anything. just some advice.
think about it.....no one is EVER gonna read a thread like this and be like "your right. i mix music like a tool. from this day forth i will never again play any top 40 crap." a thread like this won't change anything. it will just start more fighting and bickering, and if thats what your going for then cool. but if your trying to change things, then you need to do it yourself. or start a thread looking for creative people.....don't just bitch about how there are none out there. we both know thats horseshit.

i do my part by seeking out sounds that are different. Ive been pushing the raggacore/noise/hardcore/gabber sounds just because im fucking sick of the fact that every dj's bin carries the same tunes.
you know what ive found? the crowd loves it, other dj's hate it. the point in creating this post was to rinse out some frustration, and call attention to the fact that way to many DJ's are being booked for the wrong reasons. politics and business shouldnt overshadow the root of why we are here as collective music lovers.
if I could ask for anything from this thread, it isnt to call people out, but raise awareness to the stale and repetetive state of *most* club nights. Have higher expectations of your dj's, their track selection, their mixes. We know about the music, we bring it to the masses. define your scene your own way, make your town/crew/team distinct and different from the one down the road. raise the standards! theres more places to find good vinyl than the two or three records stores 90% of the DJ's buy their shit from.

if thats the case, then what are you complaining about?
its more than just my local scene, its a problem for the edm sound as a whole.
a big part of why I began listening to edm was to move away from the formulaic radio/mtv/top 40 songs that were swallowing up the airwaves.
the longer dnb is around, the more DJ's pop up and apply the very formula I was trying to escape by going underground to begin with. DJ's attempting to climb a social ladder, playing tunes that will with some certainty exact the response that will get them another gig.
I see this problem appearing EVERYWHERE now, not just in my hometown.
to me our scene is distinct, its about pushing limits and taking risks on the tables. battling, exposing crowds to new sounds, new records, new artists, old artists with new sounds.

the scene here in DC is completely different, i see versatility between each dj and its amazing. And the fans of DnB? God Ive never seen a more devout group of people, these people are usually more entuned to whats new then some of the DJ's, this keeps everyone trying harder and harder to stay ahead of them. The local talent here is simply amazing, and each time I go out they amaze me even more, hell most times I don't even really care who's headlining but rather which local is tearin it up tonight.
And the ones that do fit what you are describing generally don't last long, and this is exactly the reason why. But as for the formula, you do have to follow some sort of semblance other wise you end up out of key out of phase and then you just sound like shit. Now I agree each dj should do everything in his/her power to personalise each set, and the great ones do, thank god DC has a lot of greats.
As for new sounds, new records, new artists, thats really up to the distributors and simply complaining about it isnt going to do much help. If you don't like what you hear, create something new, thats how the underground has always been.

All good Q, nothing wrong with having 'scene' issues, lord knows we've all got them. You should definitely check out some of the local parties here the next time you get the chance, we have some real gems in this city (like any other) if you know where to look.
Personally I think the answer to this sort of problem isn't to stay in, but to go out and search for the sounds you like... yeah, you might waste $10 one night and not find anything you like at a club or bar, but I guarantee that in DC, if you ask around and follow the locals that are praised the most you'll find at least a few that strike your fancy. Of course, there are always Fridays on EXBC (www.expansionbroadcast.com), Sunday nights on Dirtbox Radio (www.dirtboxradio.com), etc...

how did every dj get the same record, and rinse it the same way, every time? what happened to the nights when you would actually hear leftfield, trip hop and (OMFG) JUNGLE?!?
i just dont get turned on anymore when I hear the same anthems risned the same way, everywhere I go, anywhere in the US.
the mixing formula needs to die as well. Bringing in the beat on the same count gets tired. and no one double drops anymore.
DJ's, check yourself and take a look at why you mix and collect vinyl. You can say its "all about the music" but your mix tells the truth.
i feel your pain, but honestly? i hear more of the "big boys" doing that than the people who buy records as a hobby. like already said, you've gotta dig deep beneath the surface, dooder. you have a solid scene where you're at, right? well, DC/baltimore has a pretty solid one itself...because there's a RACK of DJs that aren't out there just doing the same old bullshit.
i know that the majority of DJs i hear spin out locally do things that make me push myself to the next level. get creative. dig up tunes i forgot i had etc.

I will never understand why so much emphasis is placed on being different, especially in a form of expression that survives on the finite availability of mass-produced music. Honestly, fuck different....it's not really that much different, anyway. When one tries so extra-hard to be different, it's really just a way of saying "Look at ME"...while a good DJ says "Look at this MUSIC!".
Give me skill and consistency, and I don't care what you spin....

most def! its good to create a sound for yourself (for example i do spin a hella lotta sort of neurofunk and techstep stuff) but you also have to throw some suprises into the mix to keep people interested
take chances with bold mixes (style or skill wise)
keeps things interesting.

Instead of jumping down your throat, I gotta say I feel ya on this a little bit Q. I got into "underground" music [punk, hip hop, EDM] a while back for those same reasons. Now it's pretty much all I listen to. Guess I'm one of those jaded 'everything popular sucks' guys, but I don't care. I honestly believe smaller artists doing it out of passion honestly make better music.
It does kinda bother me when the music I turned to to get away from formulaic pop crap starts falling into that same trap. I think part of it comes with the small size of 'the scene'... There's only so many producers out there, and when you get into it and know everything and every hot new track there is to know it's kinda like, "OK, now what"...
I DO think dnb has a better overall scene than alot of EDM, and DC is quite good. I definitely would like to see more dj's play with different bpm stuff. I fuckin love mixes where a hip hop, reggae, or downtempo track brings it down and then BAM! the dnb comes back in on ya. It makes both ends of the spectrum so much more interesting. To me that is JUNGLIST. Props to winterman for reppin that shit in his mixes!

Jeff, you make a good point... And, honestly you do push the limits more than most.. BIG UP! But even within our scene and sound certain tunes are liked more than others. Luckily they aren't mass produced MTV shite. So what I'm saying is, for a scene and sound to survive without complete alienation of the crowd, known tunes need to be played. They help to keep people interested, the fact that they know and like a toon is a big deal. But, on the same note, dj's do need to add a bit of spice to their sets, whether its unconventional mixing, dubs, or that banger thats been hiding in your crate since 1996. As for you, keep doing what you're doing, and push that distinct sound you love.

(and it was) air brush on the pants leg and, name cut in the back of the head and
cipher in the subway without money in my pocket then
recognize this is the new truth, we refuse to suckle the empires ruse
original box-cutter walker who talk to rebuild a new living proof
see me as a banshee, as the illest motherfucker since Oedipus
monkey number one million with a typewriter, flipping tempest text
left evidence, simple-headed vagrants try to chase where Forest's feather went
darts exit us, and still leave enough alive to join the exodus
fresh as fuck, best of luck, better lead banality rally quest
stuck writer might flip, vvvvvroooom! Excitebike bitch
enter the hellafied Fat-Boys-slash-BDP hybrid founder of
militant anti-mime fraction, operate on the fringes of establishment
binge on erratic shit, fabric knit, got you riverdancing in lederhosen for woodchips
step into the Def Jux office auditions like: "sausage"
Jam Master Jay would've shot you (I stopped him)
Sorcerer, nitroglycerin in truck driving through rainforest unstable
Rawkus was like, "we're gonna take this label to another level"
(fuck that) I'm gonna take this level to another label
Anti-pop composer, sonically robbing the nation
when I strap on a blue cardigan we can be neighbors (do lasers)
water douse fire now, fire bad, fire blank at bastard Bladerunner bliss
shotgiven(miss), another bargain bin opportunity moment clipped
I was a B-Boy once, I really gave a fuck (still do)
When you were trading episodes at laser tag academy I was applying
for most sinister mister brainfuck crown confront
The loudest son of the transistor rubble box
damage and shit like open-handed palm brandishing
letting the hurt live where it landed... Like that
(chorus)
This is for New Jacks trying to decide where they fit (get busy)
Destroy the walls when you spit
For writers with a Krylon image brain print (translate it)
Leave your name dripping from bricks
For cats who covet fame with my name on their lips (re-think it)
you're sucking poison milk from fake tits
This is for kids worried about the apocalypse (do something)
Prepare yourself and stop talking shit

A good Dj has originality and skill! The scene isn't the same anymore. Cd technology is kool and all, but it's all about the vinyl!!

i think it's really cool to hate.
PS: I like tarantula and x-ray. i wouldn't put them in a mix (well, probably not) but I would play them out (well, x-ray is a little far done, but maybe not tarantula). DJs job = get the floor movin'. If those tracks do it, then, well... I hardly go out enough to complain about hearing those tunes. In fact, I've heard tarantula once, and that was pendulum at starscape. Most people on the floor are not trainspotters who get a little wet in their pants by telling their friends they've heard this song.
It's just as sheepish to start hating a song that's good because people like it than to like a song that's good cause no one's heard it. if the song is good, the song is good. if it makes the floor dance, then the dj has done his job, no?
These are the same arguments over and over. blah. play whats good, play well, make the floor move... i guess.

to many DJ's are being booked for the wrong reasons. politics and business shouldnt overshadow the root of why we are here as collective music lovers. .
of course we all want to play as often as we can...there are lots of small parties for newcomers to play at... in dc, we are limited to the number of larger venues...if everyone who hosted one of these venues was so rich that they could afford to keep parties running without making money... then you would be in luck... but the bottom line is that if you're name on a flyer doesn't bring out good crowds or doesn't make the venue any money, they are losing business... that's the nature of the music business... if you are doing something original and people actually like what you are doing, then you will get noticed if you promote yourself.. nothing is handed to you as an up and coming dj.. it takes time to establish a name for yourself... so quit your bitching and hand out some demos, go out and talk to people about your ideas, and if all else fails, you can start your own party for all those DC ragga/hardcore/gabber fans.. cmon we know you're out there.

Hmmmmm, jsut read through this thread.....Over here in the UK it is simliar to an extent, but not to bad....i live in the NW of UK, NOT LONDON!!! and the scene up here is very different, the NW scene is very close and not to much beef.....people up here do mix quit adventios , and you dont get much anthem bashing, Rewinds dont happen that often, and usually, if a DJ does more than one rewind in a set, hell get slated(i a constuctive way) for weeks  so no one really does it....
i must add to this thow....IN MY VIEW!! i dont think alot of the DJ's here in the NW push them selfs enough, u hear there mixes theve done at home....and there amazing, double drops, bit of scratching, spot on mixing, doesnt drag, beat juggling, all sorts....BUT when u hear them out, its not half as good, there is always the element of ' o no, better not risk that trick, incase i mess up in front of loads of people' but sometimes, i think u need to be able to beat the fear, to push ur DJin to the next level, otherwise when ur out, ur mixing is always basic....at the end of the day PLAYING OUT IS WHERE YOUR MIXING COUNTS!!!
and @ the guy who made this thread.....dont bitch about other peoples mixing , untill ur andy C!!!..... comments are cool, but disses are shit!

I dont think I bashed anyones mixing ability personally, my thread was more a commentary on the pop culture side of the drum and bass scene and my frustration with seeing what seems to be the same formula in every spot.
In reflecting on my post and the responses, I realize there is a scene here in the US, and its getting bigger every day. It would be neat to see more people experimenting, getting sounds from corners of the world other than the two main websites every dj seems to go to, and starting up nights showcasing different genres.
Big up to those who are pushing their own sound--> Joe Nice, Wrong Music, N20, nobot, ohm/osr, the heads on the board who stream us mixes and radio showcases, and the people in my town who I get to see some weekends.
And the second paragraph of your point is spot on.

drum & bass is dead. The next trend is gonna be emostep, mixed with a side of gabberrave and trancehop. Who puts the "ass" in drum and bass? Is it about fishing why don't they call it drum & scrod? why are all these glowstick ravers looking at me when I spin records, maybe I should become a breaks Dj? I'll never get it...
EmoStep? GabberRave? Trancehop?
do these actually exist? Big up Moe...each and every.
Big up to those who are pushing their own sound--> Joe Nice
Thank you sir.
