View Full Version : What local DJ would you have playing your wedding?

Okay, you have a wedding reception with your whole family there, along with a bunch of your friends from inside and outside the scene. You can't have an all edm night, obviously.
What local DJ would you pick to play?
[For the purposes of this, pretend that you ruled out The Chicken Dance and all the other silly wedding-dj shit that everyone hates. The DJ doesn't have to play crap, but he also has to play a wide-variety and can't play very much music that will scare grandma.]
For the DJs:
Pretend you got this gig, what kind of stuff are you going to play?

well... I DJ'ed Rob's wedding... and I DJ'ed a friend of a friend's wedding last year in Florida...
during dinner: jazz and trip hop... everything from Stacey Kent and Frank Sinatra to Mandalay and Hooverphonic
during the dance time... heavy on the 80s... a little recognizable house... some abba and shit liek that...

Just pop in "Now thats what I call Music" or any other of those cheesy tophits compilations and press play. Dont think anybody at the wedding will be impressed by beatmatching, and smooth mixing skills :)

I recommend Josh and Devin from Exit Enterprises. They can play for the family, and play for the house heads and edmers also.
I'm sure Section 8 could handle it well too.
Just a word of advice: when you go hunting for a wedding DJ, make sure they handle themselves as a professional, and they have done weddings in the past for clients. You don't want the 'club dj' type playing at your wedding. You want a club dj who also can be and act as a wedding dj would.

how much do peeps typically make for spinnin a wedding?
LadyJ
2005-06-02, 06:11 PM
If possible, I would have someone who could do some more recognizable funky house and such at the being of the night and then move into breaks and jazzy dnb later in the night. My family treats weddings as they should be treated, as huge fucking parties. We go through all of the formalities so that we can rock out for the rest of the night. Besides, it's my party and I'll dance how I want to

Average wedding rate is $100 an hour. I've done a 4 hour wedding for $350 before. And I've done a 4 hour wedding for $850 before. Some wedding DJs charge as much as $300 an hour.
Although the money looks good... I don't do them anymore.... Even though I do them very well, I can't handle it, it's too stressful, and not worth the money.

Although I don't do weddings, you should come out to XS on a Friday night. I spin deep house, nu-jazz, ambient breaks, and jazzy dnb. :bbjohnson:

But im such an EDM purist, I can't get myself to spin music I dont like (mainstream stuff).
It would have to be 100% rock/hiphop/pop, I just dont want to do it despite good money.
Unfortunately it goes against everything I stand for. Props to those of you who can suck it up and cater to a mainstream crowd.

I would have the following (in no particular order)......
Shade (downtempo, then dnb)
Muramasa
Deinfamous
Robot Death Squad
Headhunterz inc
Jungle Jessi
Bizar
Arsenault
Grimm Reaper
Ultimately this is fucking fantasy land because my mom would never let this happen. (Plus I would feel kinda silly trying to do the jungle step in a wedding gown...)
I think if I had to pick a dj based on how well they could interact with the crowd and just assuming they would play typical wedding reception music (Shout! kick my heels up and SHOUT!, etc) I would probobly go with the Headhunterz or Deinfamous... for some reason I can easily see them leading my small country of a family in the chicken dance.... or maybe I just think it would be extra funny....lol.

I actually thought of buying another white outfit for the reception, so i can dance freely. there is nothing more frustrating then when your favorite song comes on and all you can do is the white boy shuffle cause your in a damn gown. :D

I have a real name/dj name combo courtesy of Ali. I am loved.
Seriously people, mobile DJing is a skill that has nothing to do with how good of a DJ you are at the rave. It's about having songs people know the words to. It's about THEM having a good time and not at all about YOU. So, people that can accomplish that:
Ed/Spiggy
Joey Muniz
Sinestro
DJ Clutch
myself
No disrespect meant to anyone else mentioned in this thread as they are all talented DJs, but in this case you're only as good as the tunes in your crate.

Amen. I used to do this......lasted about 2 weeks. One couple asked for nothing but Dave Matthews Band to be played during their dinner.....by the end of that I wanted to fucking shoot myself (along w/ most of the wedding party).

Honestly, I'd rather have a band. That accompanied with a premium open bar and I'm happy.
But for local DJ's, I'd honestly have to say Ed because I know what his record selection would be, and I'd have best 'wedding' selection that would actually get people on the floor and not cower in fear from the scary drumandthebass.
If my family was more hip hop friendly, I'd say Phill.
