Faust and Shortee’s career has been a series of firsts. Each of their debut albums set musical benchmarks —Faust’s "Man or Myth" was the first solo turntablist album, and Shortee’s "The Dreamer" was the first solo album by a female DJ/producer. Joining forces with the world-famous DJ Craze, they concocted the "Fathomless EP", releasing the first ever all-turntable/scratching drum & bass tracks. Even before they broke new ground with their releases, both were blazing trails in clubs spinning hardhouse, techno & hip-hop shows bringing their uncanny chemistry and raw musical talent to dance floors all over the world. In 1997 Shortee became the first & only female “Fever/ Buzz Battle Of The DJs” champion, winning the US's largest Techno, House, Drum & Bass DJ/mixing competition once held at Nation (Buzz) in Washington, DC. In 2001, they became the first married turntablist tandem, making their two-into-one approach not just a musical philosophy, but also a true way of life. When they combine their efforts, they bring out the best in each other. Witness their latest albums, Digital Soul and Satisfaction Guaranteed, both produced by the pair working together. Hard, funky drums, soulful basslines, and meticulously composed instrumentation abound, helping these albums bridge the gap between mood music and pure dancefloor pyrotechnics. Together they have release singles, remixes, countless mix CD’s & appeared solo & jointly on numerous compilations ("Urban Revolutions", "Return of the DJ 3", "DJ Girl", "Revenge of the B-Boy", "XIII Soundtrack", "Scratch Movie Soundtrack", "Tino Breaks Vol 1 & 2", "Bomb Anniversary Collection 1991-2001", "CMJ Compilation", "Deep Concentration 3", "Contents Under Pressure", and many, many more.
Their original productions of tracks have been used in break dance videos such as Redbull's "Lords of the Floor 2001", Tribal Gear's "Break Boys II" & their music has aired worldwide on networks such as MTV, NBC, CNN & ESPN with features like the X-Games, Tony Hawk’s Skate Park Tour, Hip-Hop Nation, Headline News & the esteemed World Cup 2002. Their song "Drumcircle" (on their album, Digital Soul) is the official theme song for "MTV SPORTS UNLIMITED AXXESS" & the duo's solo & joint albums have earned them critical acclaim in major publications like Muzik, Spin, URB, Remix, Rolling Stone, XLR8R, DJ Times & more. Both were featured in the critically acclaimed documentary “Scratch” as notable innovators alongside Jazzy Jay, Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, Z-Trip, Grand Wizard Theodore, Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike etc. Scratch airs regularly on HBO, VH1, Cinimax, Encore, NBC, Sundance, Showtime etc. Shortee has appeared in "Spinsters" (Jane Walker & Jackie Pelle) & is a main focus in the upcoming female hip-hop Dj documentary "Mistress X" (Sowa Entertainment/The Manhattan Project) as well as various other upcoming female DJ documentaries including "Girl" (3 Day Dog Films) & "Vinyl is a Girl's Best Friend" (Irish Rose Films). Both Faust & Shortee have made media appearances on TV shows such as NBC's National TV Show "Hip Hop Nation", CNN's "Headline News" & CNN Inflight's "Showbiz This Month". In between the studio & headlining their own shows, the duo has been billed with such luminaries as KRS-One, Method Man, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Scott Henry, Dj Irene, X-ecutioners, Dieselboy, Crystal Method, Frankie Bones, High Contrast, Dilated Peoples, Prince Paul, Tino Corp., Cut Chemist, Q-bert, Babu, Disk, Sasha, BT, Paul Oakenfold, Roni Size and countless others. Faust & Shortee are featured artists on CNET (Faust / Shortee) , regulars at the annual NAMM Show in Annaheim, CA & sponsored by respected Entertainment Industry entities such as Rane, Stanton, Shure, Tribal Gear, Cakewalk , Playboy, Femme Arsenel (Ecko Clothing) and more. Veteran globetrotters, Faust & Shortee rock Drum n Bass, Hip-Hop, Funk, Soul, House & Breaks worldwide, performing all over the U.S., Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France, London, Amsterdam, Italy, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia & more!
HAAPS
In the eight years Haaps has been playing out, he has performed at events alongside Aquasky v. Masterblaster, Dieselboy, Aphrodite, Hive, AK1200, Richard F, Dara, J. Majik, Kaos, Black Sun Empire, The Sugarhill Gang, The Pharcyde, Mixmaster Mike, Deep Dish, Donald Glaude, Mauro Picotto, John Selway, Jon Bishop, Huggie, Seb Fontaine, Nicholas Bennison, Miss Honey Dijon, John Kelley, Reid Speed, Scott Hardkiss, Mars, Eric Beretta, Bassbin Twins, Eric Davenport, Czech, Charlotte the Baroness and countless others. A staple breakbeat DJ on both the West and East Coasts, DJ Haaps’ career had humble beginnings: he spun trance at a Seattle house party in 1997. The humble beginnings immediately gave way to active bookings: shortly after first playing out, Haaps was booked at a Seattle rave with headliners Donald Glaude, DRC, and Ghost Tribe ľ and things haven’t slowed down in the eight years since. Despite his initial interest in trance, Haaps quickly developed a love for the deep bass lines and choppy nature of breakbeat, finding himself drawn to the quick cuts possible with the genre. While Haaps has grown to appreciate most of the many subgenres of electronic music, he continues to focus on bringing his flavor of exceptional breaks and d&b to dancers on the East and West Coasts. During a five year stint in Seattle , Haaps was booked on radio stations C89.5 and Groovetech, and played nearly every local venue, including NAF, the Electronic Music Project, Club 2424, Club FX, DV8, Contour, Raindancer, the Bohemian, the Alibi Room, the Merchant Café, Aristocrats, Noc Noc, The Spot, Larry’s, Rebar, The Last Supper Club, the OK Hotel, the Firehouse, AROspace, and numerous warehouses and outdoor spaces. Within six months of moving to Tucson, AZ, in 2001, he was headlining many of the city’s summer massives, and was booked at six of Tucson’s clubs before bringing his sound to Washington D.C. in 2002. He is currently flown back to the West Coast to headline club nights and one-off events. He has held several bi coastal residencies and remains a resident at Seattle's longest-running breaks night, "Broken Grooves," flying back to perform in Seattle one weekend a month, usually playing two shows a weekend. In 2001, Haaps had a Groovetech Radio residency (co-sponsored by Lotus Magazine) called “Health, Happiness, and Love.” He also had a d&b/breaks residency at Raindancer in Seattle’s U-District. Since moving to the DC area, Haaps founded a small breakbeat d&b weekly called DIESEL @ DAEDALUS with the purpose of building a broken beat collective in the DC area. While working on promoting this night he was invited to be a resident at CODE @ NATION where he stayed for the summer of 2003, helping to do the broken beat bookings and keeping the dancers happy every week with his two favorite genres. In September he competed in the ALIAS “Shape the Future” Battle and won the final round in October, returning to Nation again and beating out over 40 contestants. Haaps has held numerous other residencies in D.C. at venues such as Dream, Andalu, 1223, Singapore Bistro, and Home. Currently he can be found on Thursdays at THRIVE @ Singapore Bistro where he runs the 3 stories of madness featuring house, breaks, d&b and progressive. He is also the Friday night breakbeat resident at BOUNCE @ Home, the four story club, located smack dab in the center of the Nation’s capital.
JTF
WRIR 97.3FM :.: United Kingdom
JTF was born and raised in Amersham, Bucks in the UK just outside London. It was the growing UK hip hop/electro scene of the 80s that turned him on to DJing. On Christmas Eve 1987 at age 15, bored from the lack of anything to do in the area, himself and a friend rented a sound system and a local hall and threw a party. Having no DJing experience and a limited record collection, the night went amazingly well! The result, a packed venue and a ton of positive feedback from everyone there. Options are limited at that age as far as throwing many more parties, but the whole experience made him fall in love with DJing, and it wasn't until a year or so later that he was convinced to purchase decks of his own. This came after spending time at a friend's house that had recently got into DJing. Just playing about, scratching and mixing got him intrigued with the art of DJing again. This friend was Alex Gold, who would later go on to head up Extravaganza records and also have worldwide success as a DJ and producer. It was Alex and another friend, Leo Elstob (who went on to be one half of Chicane and now goes under the Dab Hands guise) who were putting together successful club nights. DJing at some of these events, JTF also branched into throwing his own successful one off events. By this time it was house music that had taken over the sets. Mostly the sampled hip hop style beats coming out of the US like Todd Terry, Frankie Bones & music on labels like Strictly Rhythm & Nu Groove that were influencing the sets as well as the newly emerging UK style house. The growth of the rave scene in the early 90s saw his sets getting a harder edge while still playing several softer or Balearic sets if the occasion called for it. The one off "JTF Production" parties in the London area always received a good response. Amongst this was a DJing stint in Ibiza in the summer of ‘92, and then ‘94 saw a move to Bournemouth on the south coast of England where he took a residency at the newly opened "Firestation". Some weeks playing what he'd describe as bangin' house in the main room along side weekly guests such as Darren Emerson, John "OO" Fleming and the "legendary" Farley Jackmaster Funk, and others he'd play a classic old skool house or Balearic set in the second room.
Another move in 1999 saw JTF land in Richmond Virginia. Actually DJing more times in his frequent returns to the UK than in the US, he took a break from actively DJing but watched the local scene from a distance. In 2002, by chance he got involved in a project to bring an independent radio station to Richmond. Success was uncertain, but seeing how radio had a very positive influence in the growth of dance music through the 90s in the UK, it seemed like a good place to put efforts in to help a great city like Richmond build a scene for which it had the potential for. In 2003 out of the blue, that radio station received FCC approval to begin broadcasting and on Jan 1st 2005 WRIR Richmond Indie Radio went on air. JTF’s show “Mutiny” can be heard every Saturday 7 until 9pm on 97.3FM. No genre barriers exist as far as the show is concerned, but it mainly combines a mix of new funky house and breaks with any past classic electronic tracks from the last 2 decades.
