I am sick of having to stare at my pc for 3 hours, listening to 30 second samples to shop for vinyl. I MISS Yoshitoshi!! Can anybody please open a new store in DC? Or better yet, in BALLSTON, that would rock! Hey let me ask, what IS the closest shop around here thats still selling vinyl?

you know what... sometimes, I find it better to shop online... it's easier to discover things you wouldn't before... and it's also easier for online shops to purchase a wider range of records since their customer base is that much wider... of course, it's preferred that they have samples longer than 30 seconds :)

Yeah i used to shop online AND in person. But I miss walkign around Gtown in 70 degree weather, and stopping by Yoshi. Plus when you work with PC's at work, you really don't wanna look at one afterwards :D

I'd imagine the retail store owners miss you and all the djs that used to frequent their stores too. I don't know why the place you talked of closed, but I know the friends I have here w/ record stores (and other types too) are being slowly, but surely, put out of business w/ the internet.
online shopping in the best.
As great as it is in SO many ways, it's really hurt the small business owner.
So to stir things up a bit here.. what does the owner of the record store have to do to get you to shop with him/her again?

I totally feel John C on this one. I cant express how much I miss Music Now/Yoshitoshi. That was my time to myself to chill, turn the cell off and just relax listening to records. Nothing like that

:haha: me too.
Actually, it'd probably be good to have that perspective thrown in here too though.

Its nice to support the local brick n mortar- but I also do my best record shopping online at 3am when I shouldnt be shopping for records as I tend to buy too much.

i would say, ppl being lazy is whats hurting the small business owners.

I hate shopping online. for anything. yeah, so you can find lots of stuff that would be unfeasable for merchants to stock in stores, but I like picking something up, looking at it, waving it around a bit, putting it down, looking at it again, waving it throught the air some more, walking away, stopping in my tracks, turing around, looking at it again, holding it in my hands one more and then actually buying it.
brick and mortar is where it's at.
besides, you have to wait for your swag to be delivered. that sucks. I want my shit now motherfucker!! what's the point of buying a cd online when if you bought it in person you can jam out to in on the way home.

what i really miss from going records shopping was the simple fact of actually getting to touch the vinyl and listen to as much of it as i want, not to mention getting to bring it home with me that night. i cant count how many times i hear some great record online, finally get it home, only to realize that it in fact sucks balls. on the other hand shopping reclined and comfortable in my underwear is hard to beat...

i would say, ppl being lazy is whats hurting the small business owners.
that certainly is one way to say it and look at it.
but another way might be to say that conveneience is part of the reason internet sales are killing small business owners.
if i had kids (i dont, but hypothetically).
i work all week mon - fri in front of a computer i can use to buy my records and have them delivered to my home.
OR
i can wait until the weekend, try to find a babysitter i trust (and later have to pay them), get in my car and make the somehwat long drive to the nearest record shop, putting miles on my car and using gas which is expensive as hell these days, to shop at a store who may or may not have a selection of records I am interested in, then being "forced" to buy the records at whatever price they happen to be selling them at, so i can drive back home and pay the babysitter.
so, advantages of online shopping - can be done conveniently. can easily be done on work time or if i want to be a responsible employee, on my break while i eat.
don't have to drive - which puts less miles on my car, helps reduce pollution, and costs me less b/c of gas.
the ability to shop around at many different shops from a single chair. that way you arent forced to buy from a shop that doesnt have much of a selection you care for, and you can shop around for the best prices.
anyway, i dont think its so simple that it can be summarized by saying small businesses are hurting b/c ppl are lazy and would rather use the interent. i do think its a factor, but there are other, more respectable factors in play as well.
