About the DJ's:
paul lancaster:
Born and raised in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, 28yr old DJ and producer Paul Lancaster was first introduced to the sounds of acid house and techno by local pirate radio station Wear FM in the early 90s.
Inspired by the DJ mix tapes of Carl Cox that he heard at school, Paul quickly embraced the local underground rave scene and began honing his own mixing skills with the techno and breakbeat he discovered at Bass Generator Records and the deep house grooves of Trax (Flying Records) in Newcastle.
Following a move to Leeds, Paul drew further influence from the diverse mixture of funky vocal house and US garage at club nights such as Up Yer Ronson, Back 2 Basics and Hard Times along with the techno and breakbeat of the Orbit and Warehouse. After a short spell DJing for fashion shows and promoting his own club nights in Leeds, Paul returned to Newcastle with a new found confidence as a DJ and a burning desire to break through as a producer.
Over the next few years Paul took his first tentative steps towards production, remixing a number of house classics for his own DJ use and his first full production in the form of debut single 'Bad Girl' that was signed to Climax Recordings in Newcastle.
In 2001, Paul began working with Climax as a freelance A&R scout, DJ and producer and during this period a number of his productions and remixes were signed to the label including 'The Gringo Trail' by Julio G. Soon after, 'Don't Stop Burning' was signed by Cass (Cass & Slide) to his new Sabotage Systems label and also included on the compilation album '8'.
Since then, a steady stream of productions and remixes have appeared on labels including Red Ant, Sabotage Systems, CP Recordings, Climax Recordings, Perc Trax, Confi-Dance, Blu Room Records and Ktchenware Records. In September 2004, Paul’s club mix of R&B / Pop group The Sirens received rave reviews in the national press and charted just outside the UK Top 40 (ouch!) whilst his remix of 'Leathersex' by the Thrill Kill Kult on Red Ant reached no.7 in the US Balance Chart a month later. Many more productions and remixes are lined up for 2005 along with an increasingly busy DJ schedule.
In 2003, Paul started promoting his own Fragile parties in Newcastle, both as an outlet for his own music and as a way to showcase some of the best underground DJs and producers in the world today including Tyler Stadius, Cass, Mara, Steve Gerrard and Jonathan Lisle to name but a few.
With an eclectic mix of musical styles, Paul’s productions have received strong support from some of the world's best DJs including John Digweed, Sander Kleinenberg, Cass, Danny Howells, James Zabiela, Tyler Stadius, Dave Mothersole, Pete Bones & Hernan Cattaneo, whilst his reputation as a versatile DJ mixing the very best in house, progressive, tech-house and breaks has led to recent gigs throughout the UK and in Rome, Malta, South Korea, Sacramento, Poland and Hungary.
During the day Paul works for Generator North East, a popular music development agency based in Newcastle, offering free training, advice and support to anyone making new or unsigned music across the UK, as well as running his own record label Fragile Recordings.
chloe harris:
From the affinity of a Kraftwerk record sleeve, Chloe Harris has lived and breathed electronic sounds from the tender young age of five. Machine-like sounds coupled with autonomous looks inspired Chloe to repetitively listen to a sound that was just becoming prevalent throughout the world. While the world was listening to cheese-filled radio, Chloe was heading in other directions.
Exploring music to a deeper degree during her junior high days meant her social collective was also evolving, and by the ninth grade, she found an enthusiast in Ryan, an older boy with a different perspective of music with one group that would be instrumental in the motivation for Chloe – Skinny Puppy. Fusing hardcore sounds with an emotional tip, it was some of the most amazing material Chloe had encountered. Unsurprisingly, it opened more avenues for her to explore and she found content with groups such as Mentallo and the Fixer and Wumpscut.
By high school, Chloe has completed her evolution. Desperately trying to source out different electronic genres, she became a frequent visitor of the outdoor and underground parties and would stay out until morning listening to amazing music - a theme most of us are akin to. The way the DJ intimately yet controllably reached the dancer made Chloe think it could be a career change for the best. However, without detailed musical knowledge at the time, let alone how it all functioned, she decided to just watch, listen and learn. By experiencing Autechre and FSOL as well as listening to ambient and old, seminal trance mixes, Chloe began to dissect and learn the sound, the textures and most importantly, the rhythms.
While envisaging a career in DJ’ing, Chloe began work at Easy Street, a record store where she ordered in all forms of electronic music. With four years notched into her belt, she learnt how to sell the sounds to people who were there for other musical tastes. By the end, Chloe had become a patron for people who needed suggestions on where to head for the latest electro sounds and with groups like Underworld and the Crystal Method, it was an easy task. While keeping within this trend, Chloe also ensure that the more dubbed out sides such as experimental music were being directed to people she thought would feel it.
However, with the commercialization of the culture, Chloe saw herself moving on to brighter pastures. Platinum Records was her next home, and it’s here she learnt the concepts behind labels and how they were all intertwined. It was during her time at Platinum that Chloe started getting gigs. The first experiences are always nervous times, but she came out of them with people dancing, screaming and having a helluva lot of fun.
With Chloe now a stalwart within the electronic music industry, you’ll know that if you ever encounter her, you’re in for a great time.
