(Ok, I don't know if this has been posted I searched for everything I could think of to be in relation to this and nothing, if it's a repost just blend it in with the other thread please).Man, was I excited, going to basbin hooligans production, shit skynet and karl k, and chaos. Not a show to be missed, so I show up a little bit early, jungle jessi is laying down some hard ass shit, (good stuff but if you ask me way to early in the night to be droppin crowd rockers like that). Ok so it's about 10:30, I'm looking around the fuckin place and it's completly empty it seems, to me at about this time I'm looking at a way diff. crowd, that I don't think I've ever seen at nation, a crowd with the intent to just get fucked up. Everywhere I looked thats all I fucking saw, so I decided to wait it out see if some more people came out, or maybe just some people that were more fun, that could actually speak, in words, pronouncing syllables, but no this was not the case at all as the place filled up with mindless kids wandering lost in the dark, this has really upset met. After seeing something like that I don't think I will ever come to nation for a special event, unless it's friday. So to those I got to see throw down some drumnbass much respect. Happy hard core really really needs to take an amazing leap off a cliff, and head for deeper water so it is permanently drowned out, (no sorrow). So to bassbin hooligans for their line up not bad, for their out come of kids, :shady: I wont be comin back out for any of thier shows.

I was telling people before this party started that it wouldn't get more than 300 people. And Nation with 300 people looks like there are 20 people in the club.

And when you feel completely alone in a club like that, you're obviously going to not have that great of a time.

They had many many many things working against them. First, they are a new crew in this area. Second, their music is not the most commercial or with the biggest draw. Third, they chose a Sunday for their event even tho some people had off Monday it's still not thought of as a clubbing night. And Lastly, The promotion was lacking imo. I only heard about the event because I know people into HHC. Sounds like the numbers just didn't add up. I just hope they got a big time discount on talent since it was a Sunday. I'd really like to see this crew throw more events, just not at Nation, and just not on a Sunday.

Actually, I think their promotion was okay. They had flyers for many weeks and were giving them out both at ALIAS and after Cubik. Plus, this has been on the board for a while. Though maybe that would work to their detriment to flyer at Nation. There might've been one or two other places where they flyered, but I cannot remember.

The Castaway party thrown a couple weeks ago had 1 day of flyering and one week of promotion on the buzzboard. They had way more people than this Sunday past. And the Castaway party didnt have Anabolic Frolic. They just had locals.

But as we said, I think this Sunday had other things against them.

Castaway was FREE as opposed to $25, it was a Saturday night as opposed to Sunday, and it was not in a club and had little if any security. Plus, with the all locals lineup the local DJs bring their 20+ friends and fans each which add up quick. That had all the makings of a great party reguardless of promotion. And I got the online flyer for that party...

An excellent question. I'm kinda of the opinion that most of the traditional hand-to-hand promotion really doesn't help much anymore. Most people get their info from the internet, messageboard, emails, etc... But I guess the car-flyering and stuffs really help balance things out for those less computer-literate folk.......

dammit, flyering used to be cool.

it used to be a mob scene leaving buzz on a friday night.

there was always so many f*ckers lined up outside, yelling about why thier party was better then the one being thrown by the guy standing next to them.

i used to threaten people with paper-cuts when i was a measly flyer girl.

that shit was fun though.....i remember once i didn't have my ID, and couldn't get in, but i just ended up hanging out with all the flyer kids all night, and probobly had more fun then i would of if i had gotten in.

these days, flyering is ineffective, cause these so little of it being done.

people just disregard 'em when they get 'em. :puppydog:

i wish that wasnt the case because i know those who make the flyers put their hearts into their art. if id have thought about it, i would have kept all the flyers and put them on my wall.

i think lauren is right. most of the effective promoting is on the 'net or by other means.

I used to love to hand out flyers, it was always a good time. You stand outside BSing with the other promoters, then go into mass hysteria as the people start leaving and yell whatever comes to mind that might get their attention, ah so much fun and met some really cool people.

Now it definitely doesn't seem that important. I used to collect the flyers, but not so much anymore. And too bad that they couldn't draw many people on Sunday. I was gonna go, but I've been watching the finances and couldn't make it out.

yeah, we really used to yell some dumb-ass shit to get people to take our flyers.

lol. good times.

and it really is a shame that there wasn't a good turn-out on sunday.

honestly i thought the event was put together extremely well, and that it's only major fall-back was that it didn't end up packing the venue.

their flyering was pretty ample i thought, it seemed no matter where i went as soon as i got to my car, yep there it was another green flyer proclaiming this party. Me personally I think flyering has been replaced by the internet, between the buzzboard, dc raves and a countless other multitudes of sites, if you dont know whats goin on, one of your friends does!

okay, my review.

the promotion for this party was pretty ample imo because I had friends hear about this party from nyc and philly. even had some come down from philly just for this party. and the vibe I got from the buzzboard thread was pretty popular, even tho i never went in it. this party was just plain weird. that is the best word to describe this party -- WEIRD.

first, the front room. jessi was probably the best dnb dj there and I heard slant and skynet before dipping. slant was playing really noisy dnb that sometimes sounded a little muffed and discordant, but he did do a nice job mixing and scratching. skynet rocked the first couple records with his own brand of uk jungle and then went south into 'tenebrous' () land.

the main room. t-1000 did a great job with his set, was pretty impressed with his track selection, but very disappointed with his mixing. the best mix I heard from him all night was the very last one before he came off. as for nigel richards... well this was the man I went to see. and damn was I so NOT impressed. his mixing was wayyy off... of course he has a great track selection, but it had no flow whatsoever. then frolic came on... i tried... I REALLY TRIED to get down, but im sorry, hhc jus isn't my thing and actually if it wasnt so damned tranced out, i mightve been able to handle it longer.

honestly, i didn't see too many fucked up kids, jus a lot of ppl I've never seen before, at nation, alias, or anywhere out. i was thinking, where the fuck do you come from?? the vibe wasn't horrible imo, but maybe thats cause I tried my damndest to have a good time, so it wouldnt have been a complete $25 waste... but i would totally like my 25 back.

k, i done.

Jungle Jessi

you know i did see that one kid who was talking to himself all night at ALIAS last thursday, and whatever it was that had him goin off on thurday was still kickin his ass on sunday, 'cause he was acting EXACTLY the same.

you gotta wonder how people like that live to see 25.

3 times fast, and it makes me warm inside to know that shit like that is dead! :woot:okay, so seriously... not to hate or anything, but how could you look at the lineup and NOT know what you were in for? I was ALL about making it out to this, but, sadly, I couldn't drag my old ass out for the third night in a row to party hard... I got spent on Feelgood, spinning at Phoenix, and Sasha, so I simply couldn't make myself go... I think most of the problem was the turnout, from what I'm hearing. But it boggles the mind that you would bitch about the music when you see Anabolic Frolic, T-1000, Nigel Richards (playing a 100% acid set), etc. billed... Reading is essential...

Not bitching about the music, I agree with a lot of what you said, but I was in the front room, meaning (fuck anobolic frolic he blows dogs for quarters) I expected to see a whole bunch of fucked up kids, but I also expected to see a good amount of normal music loving people too, granted I go for the music, and am not there specifically to meet people, but It's always nice when there are people around that can put words together to make a fucking sentence for gods sake. You would definatly have a little bit different of a perspective if you had shown, but like ya said it's hard to party 3 nights in a row. Any vibe I had was completly destroyed once I stepped foot inside, honestly a waste of 40 dollars, 25 to get in, 10 to park, and 5 for gas. I'll never come out for a night like that again, I was just hoping to go, jam to some hostile drumnbass and have a good night, like I said complete waste of my fucking time!!

I don;t park on the street. Thats why. I've had to many friend get their car broken into on the streets out there. Even the street between The edge and Nation. I remember one night almost every car on that street was broken into and my friend Rachel lost alot of her stuff. I've had my car broken into once. I'll never park on the street again.

I wanted to come out for this, T-1000 and Adam X are lovely, but I had school monday (evidently someone forgot to mention the holiday). As was mentioned before, this party had a lot working against it. Fools need to find some new venues, people don't usually want to go to the same place for a party multiple nights in one weekend, and you're obviously going to need at least a few Buzz kids there to draw a real crowd. This should have been held somewhere at most half the size, really.

DeAtHmOnGeR bEaR

I agree - it should have been a different venue - perhaps the 930 club? But then there would have only been one room for all the music.... HRMMM...

I expected a wide variety of people in the crowd and that is what I got. I came to see T-1000 primarily and I got to see him. Alan was the shit in the early 90's on the radio as I was growing up and he was the shit on Sunday. I'm not into that Anabolic shit...but yeah he had the kids jumping. Nigel actually played a decent set... I was surprised. There was some high quality 303 quirking shit in there.

I think it was a good party, but definitely needed a smaller venue. It would have forced more social interaction amongst partygoers. Mucho props. Thanks for bringing Alan...fuck it was like having a beer after being a POW for 8 months. Such a relief to hear techno in DC.

So it strikes me that all the angry dnb kids are angry because they couldn't appreciate having some space to actually dance for a change.

I know that all of my friends had a really good time at this thing, and the majority of them weren't fucked up on anything. I, for one, had a great time 100% sober. There was a nice core group of my friends there and I had a great time wandering around and dancing with them all night, meeting some of their friends, and just talking. If you couldn't find someone intelligent to talk to then you really must not have been looking too hard. Being into the HHC thing I absolutely loved Frolic's set, and I thought he was really cool afterwards when he came out of the booth to talk to people, sign autographs, and just chill with everyone. I haven't really seen too many big name dj's do that before, although I know they're out there.

Yes, it would've been cool if there were more people there to enjoy the thing, but it was definitely a weird night, and probably not the best place. Still, the party is going to be whatever you make of it, no matter who's spinning, what the venue, and who's there. I'm glad that I was able to make it a pretty damn good time.

i thought everything with the production was great as far as the laser and the bounce mirrors in the main room. It was also cool how they set up some moving lights around the DJ booth instead of all on the ceiling - reminds me of how they used to set up the lights in Pittsburgh when I lived there.

All in all, the music was ACE. Everyone on the flyer showed up, and played pretty sick sets. J Smooth & Adam X are some of my favorites. Yeah, $25 was kind of a lot, but it was a lot more headliners than we're used to seeing in one night. It would have been a super sick party if more DC heads showed up. The parking lot had a lot of out-of-state plates.

I also thought it was cool when Anabolic Frolic came into the crowd to meet fans and sign autographs as well. He signed someone's care bear! The last time I think a deejay wandered into the crowd was back when we sold cd's in the front and BBB went AWOL after spinning in the back. Steve Smooth and security were even asking me as a photographer hanging out in the VIP if I saw him (I hadn't and was actually waiting for him myself.) Found out later he'd walked, unescorted, to the front room to sign some of his cd's for fans who bought them because apparently he'd promised to do that for them and sing other stuff or something along those lines--very cool! :onethumb:

Well it sounds like you knew what you were getting yourself into before you even entered the venue. Someone must have pulled your collar and made you enter, huh? I knew once Nigel was done I wasn't going to be interested in the rest.

There is a little thing called operational risk management. You weigh out the options you see. Does the risk of said party "sucking" override the payoff you expect in the end. I knew it was going to suck for me once Anabolic came on. Was that enough risk to hinder the performances of Alan and Nigel? No. Was the EXPECTED low turnout enough added risk for me to go? No. Obviously you didn't think about these things before you pulled out your wallet.

Unless you are clueless about EDM and just happened to be passing by and felt like dropping $25, I have no sympathy for you. Haze yourself, immediately.
