Audiophile 2496 from M-Audio is a great starter card. Could last you a long time.

I have the top of the line Emu card. And yes, it certainly does work. It sounds awesome and has tons of ins/outs, good software, etc. Their low-end card is a great value for the money. I would pick it any day over M-Audio or anything else in its price range. Their costumer service is great as well.

MIDI controller is one thing, audio interface is another. I have heard nothing but bad things about M-Audio sound card/interface products.

Those Mackie Onyx mixers are hella sexy by the way. Mackie seems to be doing cool new things. I am waiting to check out Traktion 2 in a month or two myself because I am still using Cubase 5.1 for audio recording and mixing. I hear Traktion 2 will be very easy to use and powerful as well.

I have a Delta 1010 and from what I've heard the MOTUs are a better option, but I'm waiting until I feel like I have use for an Onyx and then upgrading to that thing. Sexy is right.
