well, that fucking sucks, because i've not missed sasha here since i've been in dc, and after what i heard about how glow handled the big headliner their opening night, you must be kidding if i'd buy tickets for this...

:(

has glow improved their operations for big names yet? any experiences? not trying to hate - just scared about buying tickets when the reports back last time were so negative - no refunds, no entry, etc.

opening night is always hectic. You know that.

I went there two weeks ago after a lot of nagging and harassment by a good friend, and I was ... well disappointed isn't the word ... it was just as lame as I'd expected. Long line, asshole bouncers, terrible crowd. It really pisses me off that Sasha will be spinning there, especially since it will be crowded as fuck with people that don't appreciate his music.

zartan
2005-01-19, 03:57 PM
busy child are you familiar with what happened on that night (was it PVD)? not hectic - outrageous.

look i'm not trying to bash glow, i'm asking - does anyone have info that would make me confident that a ticket bought to this show in advance would actually get me in the door?

Busy Child
2005-01-19, 04:02 PM
glow is fine. If you dont agree, go to NYC. We're spoiled down here compared to the harassment that goes on up there. I would say this to you guys, dont let the stupid stuff keep you from seeing a good dj. As long as there arent any stabbings like in NY, im cool.

i mean really, this isnt some tori amos concert we're goin to. Its a club.

over selling an event is not cool, espically for those who bought tickets in advance and then didn't even get a refund. i hope when sasha comes the event will be better organized and that everyone will have a good time

Busy Child

over selling happens everywhere. Lots of my friends couldnt get into Cubik for Tiesto and they had tickets.

key word is. . .get there early. Forget about making a fashionable entrence.

alright whatever. first you could have pointed me to their apology if you knew of it. second there are two questions that arise from this - are they selling tickets to 18-20 year olds? if so, no way.

finally i wonder if anyone got refunds from PvD?

interesting perspective backing up busy child from groovanauts:

For what it's worth (and I'm in no way defending anything that went wrong or any action that slighted any patron), it's not like this sort of thing never happened at a major international club opening somewhere else. Here are some anecdotes:

NYC:

1) Avalon grand opening: people stood in line for up to three hours. Line was around two city blocks. Club was empty on the inside. Bouncers were extorting money from people to get in. Saeed and Palash couldn't get in for a while and they were supposed to be spinning that night.

2) First few Made Events parties at Roxy with PvD, several hours wait. Worst was Feb of last year. People stood in line for over three hours in the middle of winter with prepurchased tix. Non-tix holders essentially walked right in. Club filled to capacity and peeps were turned away with tix after standing in the cold, even if they flew in from Europe. Bouncers extorted money.

3) Maybe I'm beating a dead horse, but have any of you guys ever seen PvD at Twilo? Doors shut at 5am and people still standing from 1am till 9am. Place was so packed that people were LITERALLY sitting on top of people in the bleachers, complete strangers at that. Entire groups of people sitting on the bleachers arbitrarily tossed out by bouncers so that they could fit new people in, take their money and boot them out 30 mins later. Guess what happens if you put your hands in your pockets or momentarily closed your eyes while seated? You got kicked out.

Miami:

1) Crobar. Enough said.

2) I'm not even going to bother listing the Gestapo-like door policies of some lounges/clubs over the years. It would take up the whole page. I've seen people turned away because they were wearing Kenneth Cole loafers and not Prada ones.

I could list more examples in NYC and Miami, but for the sake of brevity, let's just say that it's common for clubs/lounges to build hype by intentionally holding up the line or to mistreat patrons. What happened at FUR is likely more the result of a sudden rush of people and the greed of a few bad apples rather than that of Glow, who have worked hard to take care of patrons in the past. Many other promotion companies in places like NYC would take your money and tell you that you're SOL, if they even bothered personally responding to any complaints. While things are starting to change a bit in NYC and Miami (mostly because there are so many competing clubs now that customer retention is suddenly a consideration), it is still not uncommon for stuff like this to happen. At least you guys didn't have to pay for $70 tix to see a DJ like some of us were forced to do in NYC (and still stand in line for hours in the cold while non-tix holders walked in). Let's hope that this is a learning experience for everyone.

anyway sorry to have been negative...i may consider trying to see this. i think best advice = go early

well, first off, i dont work for glow, panorama productions, nor FUR. I know for a fact that glow is now an 18+ party, and as far as refunds go, whoever contacted the necessary ppl shouldve gotten some sort of compensation. Just check with the glow crew.

its all good man, i love partyin in dc way more than NYC. NYC is just a hassle sometimes and even when youre at the party, its a hassle to deal with the crowd. After hearing about all those stabbings occuring at a coupla clubs for NYE, that sorta sealed the coffin for me as far as goin up to nyc anytime soon.

i mean if you think about it, any person thats going to a big concert, wouldnt just roll up at around show time. You'd get there early as possible. You can definately expect a big crowd and will be a fair share of pushing. Everone will be there simply cuz . .. . . sasha doesnt come around here often.

Even if you go early. the club will be packed out the ass by the time Sasha goes on. The main room at Fur isn't even as big as the main room at Home (the old Glow spot) - not sure of exact square footage, but it seemed this way to me when I went there. The experience that turned me off of big headliners at Panorama productions events was PVD @ Home, where I spent about 60 bucks getting in, and felt like a sardine the entire time. I couldn't even enjoy the music because it was so hot and uncomfortable being pushed and bumbed every five seconds.

i spent 3 hours - seriously - 3 hours from midnight to 3am in line for opening night for PVD

however, i will admit - i did get a full refund after raising a major stink on every message board in the universe

Sasha spun my favorite set of 2004 at Sonar - it would be cool if Glow would set in stone a new policy that says that presale ticket holders get in before macho, pretention, VIP people or people that will bribe the door guys or people that don't have presales that buy tickets at the door - that was the biggest dissapointment at pvd - the people that had presale tickets had to wait in 1 line to get their tickets and then get in the same line that everyone else was in that didnt have tickets - so we had to wait twice as long

i'd like to know what glow has done since then to improve things - it sounds like they maintain the same policies - not sure if i'll go to this - would like some further incentive or assurance - eric and justin - if you guys are going i'll consider it

NOTE: GLOW Saturdays at FUR Nightclub is now 18 and over with proper ID.

Saturday February 19th 2005
At GLOW – Washington D.C. – www.ClubGlow.com

SASHA (djsasha.com-UK)
Dan Sampson (Alternative Route Records, Release Records, Glow-DC)

When an ordinary person is recognized at a young age for doing extraordinary things, it is easy to be misunderstood. Sasha, a musician in every sense of the word, may have fallen into that media led trap in the past, but now at 30 years young he forges ahead with projects that will finally allow people to understand who the man behind the myth really is.

The best DJs know that Djing is first about being able to read people and then about being able to tap into that human experience and take it on a journey. Sasha has always been noted for being a master at this, and although his style is described as "Progressive Trance" with a good presence of House and break beat elements; his music has always reached beyond those record store titles, thus separating him from his contemporaries. Sasha creates and plays music that gives emotion a chance to speak. It is this universal appeal that he has tapped into that has established his strong fan base around the globe.

For Sasha, music is his first love, and what gives him a buzz is being able to share his music with others. From his presence at those all too talked about after hour parties where his special impromptu sets are heard, to his signature always present child like antics that leave people wondering if he has modeled his life after Peter Pan, to his DJ sets at clubs around the world, all lined with the backdrop of his own productions, Sasha leaves trails of memories, melodies and stories wherever he goes. These are the things that have been, and will continue to be remembered and passed on for years. And that is what legends are made of.

-The Arena: Pete Moutso, Dan Sampson (Progressive House, Trance)

Joey.... :-)

Sasha is worth such small sacrifices. As rare as it is that he comes around, if you have never seen him before (and knowing the trance fan that you are), I highly recommend getting your fix of quality progressive from the "son of god."

I don't typically care for venues that have such strict standards on "appearance," but props to GLOW for bringing in such a quality artist to perform. Sasha is one of the few who continues to innovate while the rest stand with the herd. I would think Glow would bring in Oakie before Sasha, but hey...support the quality wherever it may appear.

I have to agree with that. Dancing in shoes that aren't sneakers hurts my feet. Dancing is pants that aren't baggy like UFO's or flowy like a kilt isn't comfortable either. And the whole buttondown shirt thing is just silly.

I haven't been to a Glow event since back at Insomnia when ATB was there and they said that there was no dress code that night. I showed up and got bitched at because of what I was wearing. Go figure. To top things off, I really wasn't impressed with the vibe of the place because there were just too many people there who couldn't appreciate the music, and they were taking up the dance space for the people who knew what the music was all about.

For those of you guys going tonight, I hope you have fun. I'll be at Glen Echo.

E:go

khakis and a polo usually does the trick for those "dress to impress" clubs. I would still rather have people impressed by the way that I dance, instead of the type of clothing that I can afford. I personally am more impressed with people in UFO's and a nice top, but I don't make the rules.

Sure its preferable when there's no dresscode but get over it. How hard is it to put on some decent clothes to see a topnotch DJ? And the crowd was really into it. Your assumption that anybody who dresses up is clueless is really immature. Not everybody who dresses up to go out is a tool who doesnt know anything about the music.

I didnt go to this event because I had to be at Singapore Bistro that evening, but I did promote at Fur after the event. I have to say that 1/2 of the people that left there were rude when I tried to hand them flyers. Most of 'em ended up throwing it back at me after glancing at it. I have never ever encountered that many 'rude' people coming out of Nation or any other club. Apparently I encountered some guy from Panorama Productions and he said, "I hate Buzzlife" and hurled the flyer back at me. That was really rude.

Just thinking about the people coming out of the club and how they were somewhat inconsiderate, I wouldnt want to go in there because of that. Otherwise, I wouldnt mind dressing up to see a DJ. Heck, Ive "dressed" up to go to Buzz for the locals...

I call Bullshit. More like your just hating. I was there and the vibe was off the hook. I have never had a problem with anyone there. Of course you do have the few clowns that drink to much and act like morons, but that happens all the time whenever alcohol is involved. By the way, if iam trying to leave the club and I have 20 different promoters shoving flyers in my face, i would also get annoyed.

As I said in my first sentance, I DIDNT GO IN.

And it's 'you're' not 'your'. It should have been: 'More like you're just hating.' Because grammar is good. Yes, Im hating. Hating on your grammar. Hey, look, I used 'your' correctly.

And if you read my post completely, I said I might go for a DJ. Might. Not that I wouldnt go.

*co signs* i didnt have any problems there. I danced (yea, i had room right up front under the booth) saw people that i hadnt seen in forever... Im so glad i was able to be there... the music was nothing like i expected.. for sasha fans who declined on going... you really missed something good.

Talking about Grammar:

"I didnt go to this event because....." It's not didnt. It's didn’t
"I wouldnt want to go in there........." It's not wouldnt. It's wouldn’t

"Otherwise, I wouldnt mind dressing up to see a DJ. Heck, Ive "dressed" up to go to Buzz for the locals..." How about trying it this way:

Otherwise, I wouldn’t mind dressing up to see a DJ. Heck, I’ve "dressed" up to go to Buzz for the locals...

You know, I brought my Mommy to the June 19th show in B'more. I had a damn good time. The music rocked then. I am sad that I missed this. Though being unemployed sucks and I couldnt afford to go.

NOT adding punctuation is NOT misusing a word to make the WHOLE sentance incorrect. It's being a lazy typer. :atpc: Technically, I used the RIGHT word in the RIGHT conext. :funshine: :woot:

Please understand that 'attacking' your grammar is not a personal attack on you.

Ah. Well, I had never seen him live before so I had nothing to compare it to. Maybe it was just the combination of my mommy being there, the afterparty, seeing him for the first time. Now, I -am- sad that I missed this.

You can call it lazy, but it is still incorrect grammar. By the way, " conext" and "sentance"? Maybe you should invest in some kind of spell check.

Lighten up.

At least people can understand what I am saying. By not using 'you're' or 'you are' in the right way, you make your sentence harder to understand.

Or do you not understand that a personal attack on you? Dont take it personally. I hate everyone equally.

Sadly, the grammar on here is much better than I have seen on many other boards that I have visited. That being said, just about everyone makes mistakes, and while annoying, is going to happen whether by accident or sheer ignorance. Hell, I teach sixth grade and I still make mistakes in my grammar or spelling and typing once in a while.

As to the whole Fur vs. Buzzlife argument, I really don't think that there is one, because they're two different beasts. Fur caters to the kind of people who want to spend a lot of money, go to a "more upscale" club, and be seen. Buzz, I think, still tries to maintain something of an "underground" feel in this sad time where everything is becoming trendy, and therefore preppy. I have personally never been into the whole "upscale club" feel, and so I do not choose to attend events put on at Glow because of my perceived hassle with going. Perhaps some people do not perceive the same hassle because they are used to attending such events and they are going for different reasons. It's those differences that make the world go 'round, and it's lovely being able to bitch about them with one another after the fact.

I went to Dream once. That is 'upscale', I think. I dressed up for it. I had a damn good time. And as I did say, Id dress up to go to an event that I wanted to go to. I just had plans somewhere else.

Honestly, I wouldnt want to walk around in that neighborhood in my highest of heeled shoes or shortest of skirts. That's the main hassle. I was going to post something about that in this thread. When we got done promoting, we walked back to the car, got in it, made some phone calls to find the afterparties. A guy came up to the car. Unsure what he wanted, but I wasnt about to open the window to ask. Had he asked for change or help or something while we were walking to our car, I might have helped (Wait, no. I had no money). Im mainly just used to walking around late at night around Nation. Im usually wearing comfortable clothing and my steel toe sneakers.

Ive also heard that womens dont get bitched at for what they wear as much as the men do. As seen in this thread, someone dressed up, but wore sneakers. That's kind of silly. If I dress up, I am not going to wear sneakers so no worries for me!

Alrighty... so Rah and I ventured out to Sasha--I, honestly, with a bit more trepidation than her. This being only the second time I've ever been to FUR (the first being the night I spun a set there), I was certain that I'd have a lot of problems, not just getting in and beginning to enjoy the party, but dealing with the Maha Durgas of groping that were sure to accost my wife. Happily, I'm able to report back that my first Glow experience since Insomnia went much better than I had expected. First, I was actually surprised to find that the people running the door recognized me from the one time in December where I played a simple 90 minute set amongst a herd of other, much higher profile DJs. As a result, I was able to get a little priority in line, which was really nice... I didn't ask to be treated special, and I certainly didn't try to call in any favors, but the door folks made an effort to make sure I felt like I some apportionment of VIP treatment... I think that speaks very highly of the FUR security and the Panorama greeters at the door.

Secondly, the place was fuggin' packed... Dan Sampson was playing a really fun set, and even though I'm certain half the people in the crowd wouldn't have been able to pull Sasha out of a lineup and, as a result, were clearly confusing Dan with Sasha, they were really energized by the music. The jaded raver in me says, why would you pay $20+ to come see someone that you don't actually know anything about? But, at the same time, you don't attract new heads to the scene by only letting true fans onto the dance floor. By the time that Sasha did come on (signaled by the arrival of a Power Mac on the mixer panel), the crowd was at a fevered pitch. You literally couldn't move on the floor without rubbing up against someone or someones else... Adopting the typical concert mantra that Ronda and I have clung to for many years, we found a great spot on the floor where we were protected on one side by one of the floor speaker clusters. At this point we joined hands and were very accommodating to people wanting to get out, but very protective of our spot on the floor by people trying to wiggle their way to the front by sending them around us towards the booth... The way I figure it, your lack of planning in advance to get a decent spot on the floor is not my problem, and I'm not going to give up my cushy spot to someone that's just going to stand there and be a bump on the floor. Eventually, it worked out, though, giving us a small sliver of space on the floor to actually be able to dance and move around a bit, even affording others around us the ability to breathe a bit... Sadly, though, after 3 hours of fighting with virtually everyone for territory, Ronda and I were exhausted and ready to get some rest...and something to drink... So we made our way upstairs and shagged a drink, only to find that the DJ upstairs was banging some awesome tribally tech-house, so we decided to stay up there for a while.

In any case, say what you will about the FUR crowd, but those guys party like rock stars... At least half the crowd was still there at 5AM as Sasha was laying down his encore and they were all hyped up and jumping around...it was like a typical Friday night in Ibiza or something. While I, of course, don't appreciate the grope fest, I definitely saw a LOT more people left on the floor there than I've EVER seen at closing at Nation... So, guys, if they're so commercial, so much about appearances, so undedicated to the energy and vibe over which we claim sole grasp and domination, why are they able to to not only stay til the end, but also venture into the Mafia Room for some extended hours after-partying? Hell, I wasn't even up for that last bit...

Anyway, I'd say that there are a plethora of differences, but in many ways the crowds are very much the same. Honestly, I think if some of you guys would give FUR a chance, you might actually < gasp > enjoy yourself. Mind you, I'm not saying that I'll be a weekly guest at FUR--mostly because I can't deal with playing crowd control that long every week. But, I do think Rah and I will definitely have to check it out a bit more often... :D

first off i was wearing nice dark cargo pants (not super raved super big pants) and a button down collored shirt. only problem was my shoes which i wore my black vans knowing about the dress code but the bouncer still was a prick. guess i just gotta dress like i'm goin to work next time :(

ya know.. a dress code is a dress code..

I can see about having to wear a nice shirt and pants.. you know.. be presentable.. TOTALLY understand that.. but shoes... come on.. give some slack.. you going into a club which you know there is going to be dancing.. you know drinks are going to get spilled .. you know the floors are nasty as hell ... why not let whomever where whatever shoes they feel comfortable in.. don't you think the more comfortable someone is in your establishment.. the longer they want to stay.. I know for a fact that my dress shoes aren't the best to dance in and aren't the coziest of shoes to be wearing for hours and hours..( with teh exception of boots.. they can hurt other people.. specialy the steel toed ones  )

i was looking forward to this night... bought my tickets and all
BUT... it was downhill since I got to the club.
It was too packed to dance and we thought the sound system was horrible. There's a better sound system at bridges. The acoustics in that place are simply horrible. Next, we couldn't dance, so we want to dance, but in FUR, you can't sit unless you pay. Upstairs, in the cafe, they sell shrimp cocktails. So we went looking for a chillout room to catch our breaths.., there's no chill-out room at fur.
FUR could be a really cool club, only if they change how it operates. I think the hip-hop sound system was way better than the house room. Worst of all, no Jimmy Van M. This was one of the main reasons that pushed me to get tix. In addition to all this shit, Ws7, the ticketing company for panorama has charged me double $112 on my credit card that I am still trying to get cancelled after calling the credit card company everyday. The bartenders were no good either, coat check took (no exaggeration) 1 hour. ... Buzz should start booking some great underground DJ's who spin truely deep music like they used to so that we will never have to go to these places and waste our moneys.

ramz
2005-02-22, 03:16 PM
I feel you on the sound system... but generally, I believe that the system that's there is extraordinarily underutilized... John is REALLY REALLY timid with taking the system anywhere near it's engineered maximums... did you see him pull out the sound meter when Sasha bumped the volume up at the beginning of his set? heh...

RAMIRO
2005-02-22, 03:25 PM
i think the sound system is fine.. not that i've actualy been there....

from what i've heard.. it sjust needs to be fiddled with and adjusted..

i can understand johns timidness with not pushing the limits .. last thing ya want to do is start shelling out a boat load of money to start replaceing speakers and what not ..

ramz
2005-02-22, 03:28 PM
well, according to John, he's never had a speaker blow in one of his clubs ever... this would seem highly suspect given the engineering variances that you can see with the same make and model of speaker and the fact that random distortion can shred a speaker under the best of circumstances... This is also his reasoning behind having mixers in the booths that don't have per-channel eq adjustment: because they also have per-channel gain trim, which means that all DJs are guaranteed to push it into the red...his theory, not mine... If that's the case, man, you need some better DJs... If I ever spin there again, I'm definitely bringing my own mixer... :)

I've never been to FUR, but back when glow was at the old place, I always felt that the system would be out of hand, I know some ppl like it super loud, but i found it overbearing most nights, and i always wear earplugs. Are they not playing it loud enough now? Maybe they need to get some good sound engineers in there who can show them how to tweek it so its loud and crisp, but not too much.

"why are they able to... stay til the end?" -- ramz

and party like ibiza? well, that club/promoter hasen't been shut down twice. i think allot of buzzlife patrons party for the peak hour and then hit the road. FUR ain't got the fuzz on them yet. shit, they probably won't. with hints from the mafia room, their style is the bribing style...

or not, just a thought.

btw - i'm a ten year sasha fan and i didn't go. i was worried/bummed but when i heard ramz' report of clenching hands to not let any soul get through their space i knew that was no place for me 'cause i prefer to dance, rather than head-bob in a packed room. i am very sad i missed-out on the music though. it always wrecks me when i miss a sasha set.
