Police and federal officials said the driver was upset because his son was in federal custody and his threats did not appear to be politically motivated.

Ummm... I'm guessing this is what was happening outside my building...
Basically they shut down 15th street, all of the blocks between 14th & 15th were a mess... Cop cars everywhere - when I left my garage, I saw a Hazmat truck pull up, there was another unmarked thing that looked almost like a tank only on regular tires... We knew there was a van & a bomb threat - but I didn't know any of the details...

Man threatens to ignite gas can near White House
From Terry Frieden
CNN
Tuesday, January 18, 2005 Posted: 6:56 PM EST (2356 GMT)
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Law enforcement agencies on Tuesday surrounded a red van about a block from the White House after a man threatened to blow up a canister of gasoline, an FBI official said.
The official said the incident appeared to be related to a domestic dispute and not terrorism.
The man in the vehicle, registered in Michigan, has told authorities that he recently lost custody of his child and wants to get the child back. If he doesn't, he said he will blow up a 15-gallon canister of gasoline, the FBI official said.
Authorities at the scene are trying to negotiate with the man. Those responding to the incident included members of the FBI, Secret Service, D.C. police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The van is parked near the Treasury Department building, about a block from the White House.
Security has been bolstered throughout Washington in the days before President Bush's inauguration. (Full story)
