I honestly believe that if we keep this kind of postive thinking and mindset towards improving, expanding, and keeping the scene in Baltimore, that there is nothing that will stand in our way!
Keep it goin'!

Roy, thanks for starting part II... knew it had to happen soon! :hifive:
So here's where you all can :help: ...
Keep the positive thread going
Keep the ideas coming (No idea is "stupid". They all have value & just need to be fine tuned sometimes)
If you have contacts with or know of people/companies that may want to be a sponsor... send 'em my way or get me their info to contact.
Same for contacts that may want to do a seminar or have vendor space.
When we set up the brainstorming meeting... attend, bring your voice to the table.
Even tho we're in the early planning stages, the more this conference gets talked about, the more people get excited about being a part of it, & the more we all work together.. the better chance for success. I've mentioned this to clubowners as an "idea" & was told by them, they'd be crazy NOT to get in on it. I mentioned it to a friend last night w/ record company contacts in NY, he said let him know what I need, he's in. Another friend that produces.. in! People & B'more are ready to do this.
And in my **cough** spare time... guys, let's get this monthly networking party going. And the zine.. Joe, any info from your friend? Dave, anything? These are good ideas, so let's run with 'em! The beauty of it is that they all intermingle w/ one another & that helps all in the long run 'cuz we're all looking to do the same thing... give EDM & the people that make it happen the respect it, & they, deserve.

Dave, anything?

I currently work for Bassline Magazine, we cover Baltimore and DC but its not the only area we cover. Its east coast / mid west area fanzine. I have talked the idea of a Baltimore based fanzine to Bryce and Demetrios and we are considering taking on the project. Our major issue is printing costs. The direction the three of us take might not please everyone, we would probably only cover B-more's breakbeat genre's ie. DnB , Hip Hop , Nuskool , 2 step , Downtempo , dubstep etc.

Sorry if this is negative in this positive brainstorming thread but I think our biggest obstacle will be getting sponsors and funds to back all these great ideas. I think promoters / Dj's / Retail Shops are all down for the cause until actual cash has to trade hands and there's no return on it. I can't see a local promoter willing to spend cash on an idea that won't diirectly increase business for him. Just my thoughts on this.

Just a thought -- you might want to focus on the scene rather than the genres. Crowds don't worry about genres as much as they worry about where they're going and who else is there.

I'm not too sure. Its not like you find DnB heads at a house night cause its at venue X and trainspotter1 is gonna be there. A couple of years ago I would agree with you but now we have choices.

Ive been apart of several underground Baltimore parties that feature DJ's of genres besides DnB that were rockin. The way i see it- the Baltimore scene has the potential to be surpass the "only one or two genres are big here" syndrome. The scene shouldn't have to focus particularly on a specific genre... instead, in my opinion, the Baltimore scene should focus EDM as a whole- bring out talent of all different sounds and vibes.

Just some points as this positive thread continues:

1) Boy im glad this thread doesn't start with "Hi, I'm Andrew Grant. I was in Baltimore during the cold war, so I know what the city is all about"

2) Lisa, you are beyond a Goddess!

3) Ramz, Light Touch will probably pop in to respond that 2am is Baltimore's biggest problem. Don't worry, 2006, that'll be corrected.... plus, for now, Baltimore copes with events at Vibe, Kobe, and Paper Moon

4) I am so glad this is on the buzzboard.... DC, you're beginning to understand what Baltimore is all about, the congruency and the positivity and the collaboration!

5) Gotta take a piss... brb for #6

6) Just remember, this and other ideas are real because they are conversations that become real by the commitment and the actual doing. Remember, when you say you love the idea, and you wanna support.... then come out to the actual event!!!!!

7) Not to disregard anyone else's parties, but EXIT at Sonar on Wednesdays, Spy Club on Thursdays, Lucid Sessions @ XS Fridays, and Delivery Sundays are the best ways to network, get involved in the scene, meet all the people involved, and create possibilities for yourself. ALOT of the 'scene heads' are at these Baltimore events.

Personally, I have never noticed that Baltimore has only specific genre followings. There's Dnb, house, breaks, garage, jazzy chill stuff, and everything in between..... ya just gotta check out some of the other events that you don't normally hit.

2:00am isn't Baltimore's biggest problem, Brad. It's the second biggest problem.

The biggest problem is that law enforcement and legislators insist on creating a violent black market for drugs, rather than prosecuting drug crimes only when they result in harm to others. Anyone remember Al Capone? Anyone know why he was so violent? Simple: People wanted to get drunk.

For sponsors, I think we look at large corporations that have a stake in both the scene & in B'more. I.E... liquor/beer companies, developers, media.. those people have a long term stake in these being successful. As for dj's, promoters, venues, & retail... if any of these bring new customers/fans to them, it does have a direct benefit.
Dave, for the zine... I suggested (part 1) contacting Music Monthly about it as possibly helping. Joe (Modern) has a friend there & was going to talk to her. Maybe touch base w/ him to see if he has any info on going that route. If there's enough interest in doing it, maybe it can become something that covers all genres.
the only thing that keeps me out of B-more? 2AM
Understood. It's being looked at in city council & hopefully will change!
well, that and the fact that it's like the largest metropolitan ghetto outside of East LA...
Sorry, but DC & EVERY other large city doesn't have a ghetto area? Yeah, we have ours but we just blend it in so it's harder to differentiate! :delirious:

The dnb crowd is pretty insular, actually.

It really breaks down into four groups that I've seen

1. DnB
2. Soulful/funky/jazzy/underground sounds
3. Mainstream/trance
4. Hip-hop

I don't see why any group should be excluded or exclusive, when talking about dance music.

Just wanted to send out a formal apology to Andrew Grant. I was just intending to be sarcastically funny to Andrew, but after rereading it, it was just a rude statement on my part.

The truth: Andrew Grant has been in the Baltimore Scene for a long time. He knows what he's doing. His ideas are just as valid as everyone else's

I can't run for that until 2008 -- it looks like it'll be District 46, House of Delegates in 2006. That's your district, btw. From University of Maryland at Baltimore, draw a line east and a line south. Everything southeast is district 46 (basically). Federal Hill, Canton, Fells Point, downtown, etc.

Sorry Brad -- you're in another district. It's too bad -- I'd probably clean up in the Mt. Vernon area, given my stance on legal rights for gay couples.

More than 6 people I can reserve the lounge area for us
More than 15 people we can probably take over the whole 4th floor

Please be kind to XS, they are letting us use their space, it is a restaurant and lounge, so order some drinks and sushi yaw.... it's happy hour anyway!

Dan, I'll make sure to give you the minutes of the meeting / we can meet up at 9:15 to discuss if you'd like.... it may be sounding something like "Brad wants to build a huge fort in patterson park, Lisa wants to stick Feelgood in a dunking booth, DJ A.m.p. started throwing sushi at everyone, the EXIT crew wanted no way to leave out of the conference"

Yes & yes, all are welcome to attend! The purpose of this meeting is to "pick" everyone's brain for ideas. dj's, promoters, venue owners, music buffs, & party goers.. everyone has something to offer. We want to know what you liked or didn't like about other conferences & events. For seminars.. what do you want to learn? Who would you like to learn it from? As a vendor what are you willing to pay or give to the event in order to be involved? This is YOUR music conference B'more... we're just organizing it.
Brad & I actually met for about 4 hours tonight, putting our ideas down on paper & discussing the direction we want to go w/ this. Now we want & need to hear from you. If you're serious about "the scene" & wanting to help make it a better & a respected part of the music scene itself... by all means, please join us! Even if it's after 6:30.. come anyway. (Based on tonight's "planned hour or so" meeting, I think we'll be there for awhile!) Being at XS, you can eat, have a drink if you'd like, & maybe meet some new people too!
We've set up an email, if you'd like to be on the mailing list send us a note at bmoremusic@yahoo.com. We're starting a group on myspace.com and are looking at setting up a website.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on the 27th!

Hi Lisa and Brad (Brad, you know me as Giovanna)

This is something that I know several people would like to be involved in and I just happened to stumble across this post on this thread.

I'd be extatic if we could make this a community effort and give everyone an opportunity to attend. Thursday nights are very busy with gigs and so on.
Maybe we should propose a date and time on a Monday or Tuesday and have everyone vote.
Posting a whole new thread on this topic would be beneficial. People really don't know what's going on in here.
Everyone has had such great ideas so far...let's step it up.

This is the 1st of (I'm sure) many meetings to come. Since it's already been posted here & on several message boards on yahoo & myspace, we need to keep this one in place. I don't think anyone minds a different day for these really in the future. Perhaps a Monday would work better for most since that's a slow party night... (come on somebody, don't ya just want to do a Monday party?? j/k!!) People can attend early & leave if they have to, or come late & hang. We're really trying to get a feel for what people will want out of this conference, what they'd like to see included, how serious they are about getting involved, etc. And they can always email us if they can't attend this 1st one. I am going to start a seperate thread about this too. {I'm running on 2 nights now of little/no sleep (damn Redbull) trying to get all this in place, but it'll get done!}
GGgirl.. this is def a community effort & we want everyone that wants to be involved to be there. If you know people that would like to attend, please send 'em the info or bring 'em. Wendi, come after work if you want or call me for an update. Plus we'll post that in all these places.

I'm also excited and that is why I wish I could attend the kickoff meeting. Since it appears that you and Brad have been collaborating wisely on the issue, maybe we can post a recruit thread or one specifically pertiinent to "Brainstorming Baltimore" ...

I think Thursday afterwork but before 9pm clubbing is kinda money. That's why we picked 6:30 on Thursday. No worries if you can't make it this time. I would even call this 'the pre-meeting meet-n-greet meeting'.... Formal meetings will come soon and be annouced well in advance.

We'll definitely take notes at the meeting, and email them out.
