Following his move to <st1:City><st1:place>New York City</st1:place></st1:City>, he launched the career of RuPaul by writing Billboard #1 dance single of the year 1993 "Supermodel (You Better Work)”. <?/bigger><?/bigger><?/bigger><?/bigger>Since his debut in '92, Kiko has been considered one of the most influential players on the French techno scene. Kiko founded Phunky Data, a formation of the <st1:City><st1:place>Grenoble</st1:place></st1:City> scene (Oxia - The Hacker - Human Body) based around labels; Goodlife, Interface & Ozone. By the end of 2000, Kiko decided to take some distance from the decks to concentrate fully on productions and to orientate these productions around two movements that influenced him the most: new-wave and italo disco. Kiko's diary gets busier and busier by the moment as he's distinguished with éclectism and the originality of his sets. Today Kiko doesn't focus completely on the pure but four-four techno of the Ozone days. His goal is to produce 'dance floor' tracks which combine electro, new wave, techno & italodisco. With mind blowing tracks on labels like Hot Banana, Goodlife, Turbo (Tiga's Label) and collaborations with David Guetta, The Hacker & Alexander Robotnick (The godfather of electro-disco), Kiko is back on track. Was also the headliner @ the grand of the original ‘Sleaze’ events where he helped push the DC electro movement into full swing! With already a hand full of releases on a dozen different labels, Ulysses is charting his own musical path. The music released thus far has been wide in its breadth and quality, with records as diverse as Tribal Detroit Techno on Teknotika, Deep Tech-House for <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Plastic</st1:PlaceName><st1:PlaceType>City</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>, Suburbia and Tuning Spork Records, Italo-Disco weirdness on Memory Boy, and NRG inspired Techno/House on Lasergun Records. Though a multifaceted songwriter and remixer, known to create anything from Deep House tracks to Ghetto Tech, a lot of the material that Ulysses has written lately focuses on the resurgence of Electro New Wave. Look for Collaborations with John Selway on Neurotic Drum Band Records, releases on Xylophone Jones, and a remix for Arthur Baker on Tommy Boy. Be sure to keep an eye on him, he will be making waves in Dance music's future<o:p></o:p>

Ding Ding, I think I may have it. I believe that would be from Star Trek the Next Generation. Season 3, Episode 74. That is what the Borg says to Captain Picard when after he states "Impossible. My culture is based on freedom and self determination".

I have complete respect for what you guys are doing with your sound, but could you guys please stop calling your sound 'Electro"??. Electro from it's roots didn't have a whole lot to do with Synthpop or Electroclash (although both subdivisions of the sound came later on), but more with Hip-Hop and early Rap. I must be honest that it has really been hurting our industry intensely because now people that have been into Electro are afraid of going out and ending up in an event that isn't really their style.

We run an Electro/Techno bass label here in DC called Fundamental Bass Intelligence, where we are working very closely with most of the strongest Electro-Bass and Techno-Bass labels in the industry, including Breakin' Records ( owned by Ed DMX ). We are going to be releasing one of the first 3 artists of the label when it first began - Mandroid - after our next release. What we do is of course a subdivision of Electro, as well as what you guys are doing ...like i said, we have no problem with you guys doing this, but when you post on flyers about how long you've been pushing the Electro sound and everything and don't really mention our forefathers, it begins to really irritate most of us as well as disrespect the history of our music and the people that created and continue to develop it. Think of it as is Bush began saying that he, his family and his cronies are the reason for America being what it has been since it's early beginnings and never giving credit to Jefferson, Franklin or Lincoln...although that's what it often seems they are shooting for :bravo: ...

I am writing this as a representative of our industry, as someone who has released with some of the most predominant artists in the industry, and because i know the feelings of all of us. We work very closely with people involved with artists such as Afrika Bambataa and Kraftwerk who are written down in music history books as the founders of the Electro sound in the early '70s and '80s.

Here is a quote from a book that defines Electro:

Popular in the early eighties in New York, Detroit and Miami, Electro is an early form of Hip-Hop that marries syncopated rhythms with more Techno type sounds. Electro runs around 120 bpm and features the kick drum and electronic snare sounds made by the Roland TR-808.

- Excerpt from Rave Culture: an insiders overview.

Written by Jimi Smith

Like i said, i mean no disrespect to you guys, but just like we don't impose on the true Electro sound by calling our style Electro-Bass and Techno-Bass, we in the industry would truly appreciate it if you guys could just stick to calling your sound "Electro-clash". We are gonna be doing events in the area aswell as of course releasing records like we are and this type of thing really can create a lot of confusion not only for our scene, but for your scene as well.

If you guys wanna learn more about the roots of Electro, visit www.electroempire.com . It has all the information you could ever need about the history of all the early and latest artists and what has helped evolve the sound to what it is today.

You can also visit our website at: www.fbirecordings.net for more info on what we are about.

I just want to make it clear that we are not trying to bash on you, just open up the communication so we can straighten this out and side by side, continue to build a strong music scene in Washington D.C. We want to do our best to make sure there are no hard feelings or any rivalry going on that could hurt the underground music industry in any way.

PEACE

Sleaze has always been known as an electro & techno promotion. We have hosted some of the very best electro, nu-electro, techno, electroclash & italo disco acts around including; Legowelt, My Robot Friend, John Selway, Ulysses, Valentio Kanzyani, Justin Robertson, Tommie Sunshine, Jambi, Dj Unknown, Spalding Rockwell, Paul Edge, Your boy DMX Krew (did you come?), Traxx, Barry Weaver, Jean-Philippe Aviance, Invasion Plannete Phonograms, Le Syndicate Electronique, Macho Cat Garage and a ton of others I’m not going to bother to recall off the top of my head. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

I am much more in touch with the history of electro than I think you’d like to give me credit for. I am also long aware of the links and quotes you have referenced, & I don’t believe I have ever posted anything that’s been misleading.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

In the descriptions listed, Kiko plays "tracks which combine electro, new wave, techno & italo disco" <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

I'd say that is spot on accurate. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Ulysses says his production is focusing on the "resurgence of Electro New Wave." which is also commonly referred to as nu-electro. He is also doing a bunch of work with Arthur Baker . If Arthur Baker isn't electro - Then I don't know who is. He has also been long involved in the NY electro, techno & “nu-electro” communities. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

nu-electro.com is run by John B- Just a random fact. :-p <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Larry Tee- Also describes his music as nu-electro, and the makes the distinction- ‘New Electro scene.’ <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

I don't play electroclash. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't consider the tunes that any of the artists in this promotion (even Larry) play electroclash. Electroclash if there is such a thing is band driven, and has no desire to be fodder for DJs wanting to battle it out behind turntables. Most of the artists I play & book & work with would not describe their sound as such and would not want to be described as such. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

I personally say fuck genrefication. It's entirely to subjective, but the fact is- as humans we need a way to communicate, and a way to describe what we hear etc. It’s a necessary evil. The record stores & the press are the ones who started this landslide, and frankly- there isn’t a god damn thing either you nor I or Larry Tee or dj hell can do about it. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

The ‘nu electro’ category (for lack of a better description I suppose) is so packed that any name for it is bound to be virtually meaningless. The outward diversity of electro is an integral part of its makeup, Electro, is able to move into polyrhythms with a 2/4 beat-kick, snare, kick, snare, and open the music up with a funkier feel. James Brown and George Clinton used to always talk about "the one", "the one" is the first beat of the phrase, and everything always comes back around to "the one". A lot of electro does that & because of its technical openness, its able to incorporate just about any sound into it, from Prince to Kraftwerk, from rock vocal riffs to bleepy Gameboy video sounds. Electro has no real sense of rules and thus there is a lot of excitement, innovation and creativity. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

You can be as big of an electro purist/elitist as you wish, but you can’t tell me that the stuff we are doing is hurting your scene, that’s rubbish, labels like viewlexx & ghostly are doing well I’m sure & If you have a quality product and a market for it, it will sell & flourish! You cannot make the excuse that people who have long been into electro are afraid to go out for fear they may accidentally go to an event that’s not their style. That is absurd. If they are “heads” they would know who’s who, or take the time to find out. Not to mention that many of my artists are still buying & pushing ‘pure’ electro records and playing them, they are just mixed up in between a host of other influences like Italo disco, Detroit & German techno, house and no wave. Not to mention club 5 has hip hop in at least one room of the club the entire night. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

I think the good thing about what’s happened though is that a lot of these artists are trying to break through the genre barrier (still doing a fine job I believe) but actually giving it a name and a trademark caused a flood of both good and bad tunes and reactions. The record shops still haven't found much of a way to create sub-genre's or categorize things better yet, IMO there would be a TON but I think it's a great sign for staying ahead of the curve as well.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

I’d love to help you out, I understand what concerns you are trying to convey, I’ve always been a big fan of electro in it’s truest form, and I really don’t believe anyone here is trying to disrespect that. If you are interested in doing electro events in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:State><st1:place>Washington</st1:place></st1:State>, I’d love to keep communications open as I’m sure there is a lot I could help you out with on the back end. I am all for pushing innovative music in this city and especially in respect to techno & electro & all of their subsidiaries.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Respectfully, <o:p></o:p>

Thank you for replying Simon, it is good to hear your side of it. First off let me clarify that i am not really much of an elitist when it comes to Electro, just someone very sensitive to what i have been seeing done with the word Electro by many who truly dont understand the history and just sorta seem to be hopping on the "bandwagon" so to speak. There have been a lot events where like said, they promote it as "Electro", and then you get there and it's nothing but Electro-clash without a single record that is actually pure Electro being played.

I see your point completely about genrefication and yes, although it is a necessary evil, it is an evil in itself without a doubt. The problem is that many of us dedicate our entire lives to developing certain types of styles of the sound that begin to appeal to many people while others do not to others, which is were people i believe begin to find the need to classify their sounds into genres so that people can determine wheter or not a lengthy ( or short ) drive or walk down to the club will be a worthy one.

Please do not think i am discrediting you in any way or saying you are misleading which i was not in any way, but rather asking that if you guys are gonna play Electroclash, that you please be more informative about it...we just feel that it creates a lot of confusion for people such as B-boys and such that try to go out for something and end up in a completely different type of thing than they anticipated for. This isnt like i said just my concern, but the concern of most people in our industry we have communicated with, which include labels that work within all genres of the Electro sound...maybe not so much with Nu Electro, but i guess we are all still trying to get used to it and have an open mind to it.

I have not seen or heard any of the events and acts you guys have done so for the most part i need to keep my mouth quiet and come hang out, give you our records and mixes and begin to play a part in what we are all tryng to build here.

I truly appreciate not only the time you have taken to clarify the matter but also your level of integrity and professionalism in handling this. You certainly seem like the kind of guy we need to have around and carry the kind of track record that will make sure our time isnt wasted with anyone who just doenst really understand what we are all about.

Kind regards,

Santino

Skrufff¹s man-in- New York Larry Tee confirmed this week that his Thursday night Disgraceland at Crobar is taking an extended break, with no firm plans to re-open in the immediate future.

³It was great to be able to afford to bring in the likes of Tiefschwarz, The Glimmer Twins, Whitey and Grandmaster Flash to New York and Crobar wants us to continue but we haven¹t decided whether we want to continue weekly or monthly or whether we are going to do in such a big space at all,² said Larry. ³We are also considering a new Saturday party somewhere instead.²

³My fave new club in New York City right now is Misshapes which is an alternative dance rock party where kids don¹t think it¹s uncool to dance,² he continued, ³ though for the next wave I think London is beginning to show lots of promise,² he predicted.

³Music Shopping is much better there and that will probably give London an advantage creatively. NYC has no record stores and that creates a problem for the evolution of music. If you can¹t listen to something new you cant be inspired by it,² said Larry.

The globe-trotting DJ/ promoter (who remains synonymous with electroclash) also suggested America¹s West Coast could become the new hotspot for alternative culture, specifically Los Angeles.

³LA has a huge supply of kids dressed up like alternative rock bands with touch of 'Thriller-style' 80s camp,² he explained. ³And LA is still affordable whereas NYC and London aren¹t.²

FROM KIKO'S AGENCY

Because we won't be able to get Kiko's work permit in time before he leaves for the States, we have to postpone the American part of his tour.

US Immigration makes it very difficult for us to get a permit and it's a long and expensive process. We do not want to take the risk of not having a permit, so unfortunately, we have to postpone the tour. Those of you who have received a contract, please consider it void.

Sorry again for the embarrassment,
-“Kiko’s Agent”

However, after some hard work SLEAZE is VERY PROUD to present: A homecoming & A Debut that made a lot of sense. DC GOES BACK TO ITS ROOTS!

Selway is a creative “by-product” of the early 90s DC rave scene who catapulted his global techno recognition with his pristine production techniques and stellar DJ sets. His 2001 album “The Edge of Now” was years ahead of the electro trend. Tonight we welcome him “home” to showcase his latest endeavor with Ulysses; A key player in New York's Electro movement, Ulysses started one of the first large-scale Electro parties in New York, the "Regressive Technologies" series. Was also the headliner @ the grand opening of the original ‘Sleaze’ events where he helped push the DC’s electro movement into full swing! Look out for the spankin new NDB mixes of Le Tigre’s “After Dark” on Universal.
